Talent not enough to win championships, Saints’ Stinchcomb says

UGA football fans’ favorite brothers, the Stinchcombs, were at the Touchdown Club of Athens meeting this week, Matt on hand to introduce featured speaker Jon of the Super Bowl-winning New Orleans Saints.

As you’d expect with brothers, there was some good-natured sibling rivalry. Matt told the assembled fans that he’d been excited to be asked to speak to the club … until he discovered it was just to talk about his little brother.

Jon, a Pro Bowl selection who looks to be about twice the size of Matt these days, was there to talk about what makes a championship team. He recalled his sophomore year at UGA when the 2000 roster was loaded with NFL-caliber talent, with the likes of Quincy Carter, Marcus Stroud, Richard Seymour, Charles Grant, Jonas Jennings, Boss Bailey, Kendrell Bell and so on.
Coach Jim Donnan told the team that “if you can’t win a national championship with talent like that, you should get out of coaching,” Stinchbomb said, pausing for a moment before adding: “That was Coach Donnan’s last year as coach.”

The problem, Stinchcomb said, was that despite all that talent, the Dogs “didn’t win because we didn’t play as a team.”

The key to a great team, Stinchcomb said, is accountability. That came into play in 2002 when Georgia was playing at Auburn for a trip to Atlanta and the SEC championship game. After a pretty poor first half, Mark Richt remembers he was trying to figure out what he was going to say to get the team fired up when he heard the loud voice of Stinchcomb doing it for him. Among other things — most of which Stincomb laughingly admitted he didn’t want to repeat — the player asked his teammates to look the guy next to them in the eyes and vow to win it for him.

Another factor in the turnaround after Richt became Georgia’s coach, Stinchcomb said, was that the players worked harder. He still smarts at the memory of the first day of mat drills, in which the players are graded on their efforts. Stinchcomb’s grade was a “D.” That was a new experience for the noted scholar-athlete. “I’d never made a ‘D’ in anything in my life!” In fact, he joked, looking over at Richt, “I’m still a little bit contentious about it.”

Jon Stinchcomb likes to remind his brother Matt that he scored against Auburn. (University of Georgia)

Jon Stinchcomb likes to remind his brother Matt that he scored against Auburn. (University of Georgia)

The same lessons have applied in New Orleans, he said, where the team and the community have bonded tightly in a way similar to college football programs in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. But while he said he’s proud of being on the Super Bowl champion, Stinchcomb drew a big cheer from the Athens fan gathering when he noted, “I’m a Saint for this period of my life, but I’ll always be a Bulldog.”

Asked his favorite moment from his UGA playing career, Stinchcomb cited two. The first was the 2001 come-from-behind win at Knoxville. He said it was “the loudest stadium I’ve ever heard” until after the Dogs scored the winning touchdown, at which point “it was the quietest stadium I’ve ever heard.”

The other UGA highlight was that Auburn game in 2002. Stinchcomb turned to brother Matt sitting beside the podium and drew a laugh when he said, “I scored a touchdown in that game, Matt. I don’t know if I told you.”

As Richt noted in thanking the Stinchcombs’ parents, who were on hand, Jon and Matt are two of the best UGA football has produced, both on and off the field. In the latter regard, the Stinchcombs, along with pal David Greene, are again putting on the Countdown to Kickoff event to raise funds for children’s healthcare charities, with this year’s fan day featuring Dogs present and past set for July 17 at the practice fields in Athens.

Another example of accountability.

Original Homer, thats because he is a joke just like the paper he writes for.

As far as this article goes…. Talent dont win championships. I know Stinchcomb said it, but to blather on and on about it for a topic is plain stupid. Here is more insight.

Talent dont win championships.
Fans dont coach
Coaches dont make tackles
Trainers dont wear shoulder pads
Running backs dont serve powerade
Vendors dont mow the grass
Groundskeepers dont gameplan
Michael Adams dont have a clue
Neither does Bill King

under Richt

He is 24-7 against the SEC West.

He is 28-16 against the SEC East.

He is 38-4 against nonconference opponents.

He is 8-1 against Georgia Tech.

He won four of his first five games against Tennessee, but has lost three of the last four against the Vols since then.

He was born the same year as Chuck D of Public Enemy.

Ranks third in winning percentage among active college coaches that have coached for at least five years, now that Pete Carroll left USC for the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks.

He is 90-27, trailing only Urban Meyer (96-18) and Bob Stoops (117-29).\\yeah he is pretty damn good

Ere anyone attempts to argue that Coach Richt’s superb out-of-conference ledger is the product of schedules stacked with the likes of

Northwestern State,

Western Kentucky,

Tennessee Tech, and

Hawaii in the 2008 Sugar Bowl,

I should hasten to point out that he is 21-4 against

Arizona State,

Boise State,

Boston College,

Clemson,

Colorado,

Florida State,

Georgia Tech,

Michigan State,

Oklahoma State,

Purdue,

Texas A&M,

Virginia Tech,

West Virginia, and

Wisconsin.

Even if we factor out Division I-AA teams, Sun Belt squads, and similar schedule fodder, Coach Richt is .840 against teams from automatic BCS-qualifying conferences other than the SEC. (Yes, I’m going ahead and counting the Broncos in that category because the Mountain West will get a guaranteed bid as soon as Boise State is invited to join.)

I have never seen Richt focused like this before in the off-season, maybe 2002 & 2007 to an extent, when he finished in the top 3 in the nation, but he’s never been this intense. he’s in every meeting with the qb’s, he’s using sec refs to eliminate penalties, he fired 3 staff members and went after his biggest competitors staff, he has 2 freshman qb’s playing like Tom Brady already. He’s gonna bring some new stuff into the offensive game plan, a little little pistol, little zone read, little option, bringing the 3-4 defense to the SEC East, innovative. This is crazy. And I love it.

Tall Carl,

Where do you come up with 20% is “base” for a tip? 15% is the standard tip amount. But, then how do you really tell the difference when many people can’t/don’t do the math and just guestimate and you don’t know whether they liked or didn’t like your service based on the amount left on the table? All I want from a waiter/waitress is for them to be polite and serve our food and drinks promptly and make sure I continue to have everything I need during the meal. Tipping is one of the most idiotic concepts ever developed. The staff ought to be paid a fair wage for their work and then they ought to do their jobs like EVERYONE else who is employed.

” Playing together as a team “………Yes, Jon Stinchcomb, you are absolutley right !!!…….I post on this site just about every night before I retire for the evening. Not at all trying to say that I am a knowitall, however I have posted repeatedly concerning the philosophy of chemistry in college football. It is my opinion that everything, especially college football runs in cycles. With that said, as an optomist, I believe without any doubt, 2010 is UGA’s year to rip everyone we play a brand new one. We may well lose a game, mabe two, but everything has come full circle for the DOGS to have a championship calibre year………………..Just look at what we have going for us: Probubly the deepest most talented offensive line in the SEC, O line play wins or loses games. I would take Washaun Ealey as my #1 RB over just about anyone in the country……..and he will be backed up by Caleb King who is way over due for a breakout year, and he will indeed, breakout. Then you have Dontavious Jackson, who is also primed for a great year, and now your running game is second to none !!…….Now look at the WRs……..not much depth, ok, but did anyone notice our tight ends ? The WRs we do have are tremendous, and our tight ends are enough to make any defensive coach shake in his shoes. Now flip on over to the Defense, Coach Todd Grantham, Garner, Belin, and Lakatos are all superior coaches, and therein lies the CHAMPIONSHIP. Defense wins championships, and though Grantham may not have all the players he wants [ tall corners, big LBs] he does have a very talented bunch of defenders…………….With a great big ol fire lit right under their butts !!! Infact, that Grantham fire is so big, that it has spread to not only the defense but is fully ingulfing the offense as well…………Therin lies the ” teamwork” or ” chemistry ” as I like to call it………….Through the years of watching, and studying college football, I have seen average teams do great things with chemistry [ see Boise State] . And one thing is for sure this year with the University of GEORGIA BULLDOGS, they are not any average team, they have talent, plus that winning edge………CHEMISTRY !!! GO DOGS !!! GATA !!! SIC’ ‘EM WOOOF……….WOOOF………….WOOOF……..WOOOF…..!!!!!!!!

Sometimes, the problem with a program is that it has poor coaches, like we have in football.

25-6.

20-3 to Auburn I thought was inexcusable for a program that 3 times has been to the College World Series under David Perno.

25-6 is worse.

Don’t give me this discussion about 1-run games.

13-2 Alabama.
12-1 FSU.
17-5 FSU.
11-1 Kennesaw State.
20-3 Auburn.
19-3 Auburn.
15-5 LSU.
15-5 Climpsum Farmers.
14-6 Climpsum Farmers.
25-6 Georgia tek nerds.

10 games this season given up 161 runs.

Scored 37.

161-37.

161-37. That is just about what our record is against Georgia tek in Baseball at Foley Field in Athens, and we go out and lose.

10 games giving up 161 runs 16 runs a game for 10 of our games this season, already.

Scored 3 runs a game and give up 16.

16 to 3 score in double-digit of our baseball games.

ERA of entire Georgia Bulldogs’ Pitching Staff :

Cooper Moseley 5.19
Alex McRee 6.14
Steve Esmonde 7.06
Justin Earls 7.71
Chase Hawkins 8.37
Zach Laughlin 10.80
Patrick Boling 12.27 1
John Herman 13.50
Malcolm Clapsaddle 14.04
Eric Swegman 14.21
Blake Dieterich 14.77
Cecil Tanner 14.79
Evan Tieles 17.18
Ben Cornwell 20.25

That is a pitching coach issue. Fire him now Coach David Perno, sir, please.

Why do we have an 11-22 record for a team who started the season in the Top 25.

We are 0-16 in games in which we score 5 runs or fewer.

Duh.

We are 0-18 in games in which we are losing at the end of 6 innings.

We are 0-13 in games in which we gave up 10 runs or more.

Eric Swegman walked the 1st two batters of the game. They both scored. The game was over.

We pitched 10 pitchers.

We gave up 25 runs to Georgia tek nerds at Foley Field in Athens Georgia on TV tonight.

What good does it do to send the pitching coach out bobbing his head on TV jawing at the pitcher after he just walked to opening 2 batters in a row. 90 percent of the time you walk the leadoff hitter, he scores. We walked 14 Georgia tek batters tonight. 14. And, lost 25-6 to a team we hold an advantage on all-time of over 50 more wins than Georgia tek nerds in baseball.

Fire the pitching coach.

Fire him before 8 o’clock in the morning.

The opposing hitters are hitting .an average of 329 on the season against all UGA pitchers.

Oh, I forget. You are not allowed to say anything but positive spins on Georgia Bulldogs’ Sports in here. How silly of me to forget that.

We are better than Georgia tek. 25-6 and we’re the better team. How’s that ?

Unless they can start beating Florida and Tenn, there will be no more championships. I love the Dawgs, and I wouldnt trade CMR for any other coach, but lets not kid ourselves, the Dawgs need to improve against SEC east teams to play for championships.”

YOU, sir, are NOT ALLOWED TO SAY THAT IN HERE.

You cannot discuss that we average on Offense 14 interceptions per year every year of the last 4 years in a row and now feature 3 freshmen QB and one 4-year QB whom the Offensive Coaching Staff and Head Coach want to move to WR, but he doesn’t want to with his 5 completions in his now 4th year career here, 0 TD passes and 2 interceptions. Aaron Murray has now thrown 5 Interceptions in the 3 scrimmages this Spring Practice. Is his arm still sore with his 5 overthrows on every one of his 5 deep passes in the G-Day Game ? We average 21 fumbles a year for the last 4 years in a row and had 5 more fumbles in the G-Day Game of 4 quarters lasting only 12 minutes each with officials told to call 1 penalty of the 15 committed – including 0 when Nick Williams was thrown out of the game by his Defensive Coordinator and when on the same play then Washaun Ealey in a bush league play punched him in the face in retaliation. We average Number 96 in Penalties every year of the last 4 years.

5 Years ago, we won The SEC Championship.

Adding that year to the total is not nearly as conclusive. And, it falsely reports 2005 as a bad year SOGADOG.

Sir.

10-10 last 4 years vs SEC East that is MY STAT

That is NOT a winning record, as you report for 5 years.

We LOST to ALL 5 SEC EAST OPPONENTS IN A ROW in the last 4 years.

Want to tell them when we last accomplished that ?

We are fixing to go 1-6 vs Urban Meyer.

In the last 4 years we are 1-3 vs BOTH Florida and the vols. The vols have SUCKED.

It is redundant to state that we have never beaten all SEC East teams in the Coach Richt Era ANY SEASON and to then say that we have NEVER beaten both Florida and the vols ANY SEASON of the Coach Richt Era. The point is that we have NOT been on the National Stage in the Coach Richt Era BEATING a Top 10 Final AP Poll team in ANY BOWL GAME the ENTIRE Coach Richt Era.

FACT : you don’t seem to get to SOGADOG, sir, we have a QB coaching TE who in game 12 of the 13-game season last year finally figured out to start Orson Charles with 23 catches not Aaron White who had 3 his freshmen year the year before; we have a great RB coaching WR who called for the football to be thrown to Marlon Brown 2 times all season yet is given credit for making AJ Green great – yeah right, he also had the ball thrown only 2 times to Branden Smith all season last year also inexcusable; we have a former WR for us whose DAD was a great RB for us one of the best ever for us, who is coaching RB; and we have an Offensive Coordinator whose claim to fame is being the QB coach at JAX State for 1 season; and now Coach Richt has admitted he cannot give him free reign like Bobby Bowden did him at FSU and has in public said that he will call the plays, name the QB, coach the QBs himself and determine every player on the Depth Chart HIMSELF in addition to doing something about getting the TEAM to beat Florida.

Coach Richt has 3 times beat a Top 10 Final AP Poll team David Greene in 2001 beat # 4 vols, DJ Shockley beat # 6 LSU for SEC Championship 5 years ago 2005, and Matthew Stafford beat # 9 Auburn in 2006. We have played 11 games vs Top 10 Final AP Poll teams in the Coach Richt Era and won 3.

Stinchcomb hit the nail on the head and the lack of discipline is the reason this program is in the tank. Everyone is in love with CMR, because there was nowhere to go but up when CMR arrived on the scene.

If you want to accept mediocrity to sell tickets fine, but do not boast about a program that is tanked. You now have to compete with Saban, Miles and Meyer, which will cost CMR his job in 2 years or less.

Get out of love with CMR had put some pressure on the program to win.

Matter of fact, if CMR does not go 11-1 (1 being GT), which is excusable, this will cost him based on one of the easiest schedules in D-1.

How is baseball working for you…..? Just another record set for victory. Head on back to the SEC (junior league) and pick up a few victories over there.

It is best for you to avoid FSU, VT and GT…this is major league.

It happens ....... look at Tarkenton and Kelley

April 15th, 2010

Fran Tarkenton and Jim Kelly never won the Super Bowl but they led teams there about 4 times EACH. Are they NFL failures??? I do not think so.

Mark Richt may never win the NC ( he will win the SEC East and the SEC Ch. from time to time ) but if we add only one or two wins per year to his average, then he will be like 9-1 every year. Folks, there must be some coaching legends that NEVER,EVER won a NC. Thta poor guy is probably at your ala mater ……….IF you even have one.

CMR is the current UGA coach. He, when comapred to Dooley and Donnan is far above their level and Dooley won a NC after about 17 or 18 years at UGA. He also won about 4 SEC Championships. He arrived in 1963 and won it in 80. It takes, skill, MOTIVATED PLAYERS and skill and motivated players and the intangibles ………like scheduling and luck to win the NC.

To say that “Richt is a loser” is to show your ignorance. Name one school that has won at least 8 games for 13 years in a row and soon to be 14 years in a row. Not Oklahoma, not Alabama, not Florida, not Southern Cal, not Michigan, not FSU, not Texas, not Nebraska, not Penn State, not Ohio State, NOR ANY SCHOOL has accomplished this record beyond UGA. Name one??

Tarkenton and Jim Kelly were two of the greatest NFL Qbs but they NEVER WON the Super Bowl. This is how you evaluate success. Richt might end up as a Jim Kelley type of coach. He played with him at Miami, co incidentally.

Gooooooooooooooooooooo Dogs.

Actually I hear that most SEC coaches and GT are taking up a collection to extend CMR’s contract. Everyone who beats this program loves CMR, especially Meyer.

How is that UF vs. UGA record going for you?

Richt is not a loser by any stretch of the term. He is however making 3-4 million per year and it is only natural for the fan base to expect championships when you are paying that kind of salary.

Guys,
Here we go again where I get embarrassed to be lumped in with a bunch of you um… guys as UGA fans. Some of Patrick’s statistics are questionable, no doubt he pulled some of them in haste. But his underlying theory is correct. At least twice if not 3 times we have had the team who sniffed the BCS Championship. Case in point:

2002 13-1 and finished the year hotter than any team in the country. The problem was two other very good teams ran wire to wire ranked #1 & #2. Stinks but that’s just the way it broke.

2005 11-3 but if you’ll recall, we lost DJ Shockley in the Arkansas game and he misses the Florida game. We lose to UF by 4 points with a walk-on backup QB and still go on to win the SEC Title. One could argue with a healthy DJ, we win not only the UF game but the Auburn game and play for the BCS. Keep your arguments about what WVU did to us in The Sugar Bowl, and I will ignore what Utah did to ‘Bama saying neither of us “wanted to be there”.

2007 11-2 and without any doubt we were the BEST team left at the end of the season. We lose twice in September and LSU loses twice in November…. shear luck or a lack thereof that both ours were in the east and LSU split their losses 1 east & 1 west to stay in the SEC Championship game.

Now, the problems…. YES we have a terrible issue with Florida. We can all speculate as to what it is but no one truly knows. It’s going to take wins, consecutive wins and both teams will start to believe the cycle is turning. Keep in mind, if we could have won last year we would have split the previous 6. As it is now we’re 2-4 in the last 6. Hey if UF fans and media can pick when they start recording history (IE they start @ 1990, when they started winning) we can too. We need 2 straight, period.

Tennessee has always been back and forth with UGA, probably not going to change much. We’ll win one and they will. We’ll get ours.

LSU we’re dead even with

Bama has only beaten CMR once, sure they had a magical season last year and earned every accolade… but that doesn’t make the “program” better than ours. Shoot we all know Lord Sabanator won’t even be there in 3 years.

Auburn, Carolina, Kentucky, Ole Miss…. they’ve all beaten Florida, Tennessee and ‘Bama (with the exception of KY) too so does that mean the end of their football programs too? Or do we just want to over-react to our program?

Darn guys, yes they have some shiny trophies in glass cases that they were very lucky to win. They worked hard, kept their noses in it and got there. We will too. But stop being such marks to point out everything bad about UGA Football.

Everyone of us that has watched our teams play knows the last 2 or 3 seasons we have slid slowly backward in terms of defensive prowess. We were under BVG a team that other teams feared playing. Some of that stayed in CWM’s early days but by the time BVG’s touch had completely dissolved and it was Willie’s D… we were in trouble. We saw it, and Mark saw it and he went and fixed it.

So can we play some football before you bury the guy? Currently, he is the BEST coach in the country w/o a ring as a HC. The Best… and UGA IS the BEST program in the last 9 seasons w/o a NC… Be glad, be proud that as long as CMR is our coach we walk into any stadium on any day against any team and expect to win. Remember in ‘07 when we were begging USC to play us in the Rose Bowl? Ever hear UF beg for that game? I’ve not.

We’ll get ours, and if Grantham is Mark’s Erk…. it’ll be sooner rather than later!

You tell em Jon. Team first is the way to win. Finish Strong! Im sure you know about that phrase. You are on the best TEAM in the league, with the best LEADER in Drew Brees, and the best CITY of New Orleans. You will forever be remembered in Saints History. Well, it would be cooler if you had went to LSU, but hey, nobodys perfect, LOL. At least you are a SEC brother UGA. Geaux Saints, Geaux Tigers!!!

UGA facts:

SEC under Richt, 2001-05 = 32-11
SEC under Richt, 2006-09 = 20-12

vs AU-FL-TN 2001-05 = 7-8, 2006-09 = 6-6
vs ARK-KY-MS-MST-VANDY 2001-05 = 17-0, 2006-09 = 9-3
VS AL-LSU-SC 2001-05 = 8-3, 2006-09 = 5-3

UGA is in decline
UGA beats up on the hapless teams of the SEC
UGA is below .500 against AU-FL-TN
Since 2005 UGA is 9-3 against the lower-tier of the SEC
Since 2005 UGA is 11-9 against the upper tier of the SEC
UGA is a good football program, second-tier, but certainly not first-tier.

I have participated in the countdown to kickoff events for several years. You will not find better people than Jon and Matt Stinchcomb. Both will speak to you by name and thank you for participating in the fundraisers. They spend a lot of time helping put this event together.
I thank them both!

if richt has a 100 yard rusher, he’s 40-3.

if richt has 0 turnovers, he’s 15-0.

not real hard to see how georgia will win 14 games in 2010.

UNDER Richt

Vs. SEC foes: 52-23

.
Vs. Top 25 foes: 29-18
.
Vs. Top 25 foes away from home: 18-12
.
Vs. Top 10 foes: 8-6
.
In postseason games (bowls and championships): 9-3
.
In games decided by a touchdown or less: 34-14
.
Record at home: 46-10
.
Record on the road: 42-6 (including bowl games)
.
Losses to unranked teams: 6
.
Top 25 finishes: 8
.
Top 10 finishes: 6
.
Fact:………UGA was 12-1 in 2002 (prior to bowl selections)
.
Fact ………Fla was 12-1 in 2006 (prior to bowl selections)
.
Fact ………Not UGAs fault there were 2 unbeatens that year. “unlucky”
.
Fact……….Not Flas credit that there was only one unbeaten in 2006. “Lucky”
.
Fact:………Luck (not merit) had more to do with Fla getting an invite to the BCS not that Fla was more deserving to go to a NC than UGA with identical records.
.
Fact:………No SEC team has ever lost a BCSNC game and if UGA would have been invited nothing indicates that it would have been different
.
Fact……….UGA has 2 SEC titles..same as Fla in last 9 years and equal amount of total wins (90) over all.
.
Fact……….UGA has been ranked more times top ten in last 9 years than any SEC team at 6. Fla has only been ranked top ten 3 times in 9 years (real impressive).
.
Fact……….In 9 years under Richt the only SEC team with more wins is LSU

Fact………..UGA has won 4 str8 bowls….more than any other SEC team.
.
Fact……..UGA has won 11 of last 13 bowls…Thats more than any team (tied with LSU and more than FLA)
.
Fact…… UGA has won 8 or more games in last 13 years…more than any other team in the nation including Fla.
.

Fact…….UGA is clearly as good or better than any SEC team over last 9 years. Only a fool or a fan of the mythical BCSNC selection process (non playoff) would think otherwise.
.
Fact…….UGA had same record when they won the SEC title in 2002 as Fla did in 2006/8 when they won the SEC title. But UGA had the misfortune (luck) to have that record in a year that had 2 other teams with undefeated records.
Hardly an indictment on UGA but rather on the NC selection process.
6 times finished in the top 10
2 times finished in the top 3
3 SEC Championship Appearances
2 SEC Titles
3 BCS Bowls
2 Sugar Bowl wins
90-27 record over 8 seasons – 79% winning percentage (one of only 7 in the history of college ball to have ever accomplished this)
4 str8 bowl wins
7-2 in bowls (big games)
Mark Richt coached QB coach for Charlie Ward and Chris Weinke = 2 Heismans; Head Coach for David Greene = all time winningest college QB until Colt McCoy this year); and coached Matthew Stafford = very rich #1 draft pick)
No Probations
He has my respect.
Period.

“record at home 46-10″ thanks BuLLdawg for the updated numbers. The ones I was using was from ESPN of the week prior to the ALA game in 2008 when they compared Saban to Richt. Here is the link
.
So not lying just didnt properly extrapolate the numbers from then. Now go argue with the world wide leader in sports. Moron

but here is more about Saban and Richt for your entertainment BuLLdawg.

Nick Saban went 6-5, 6-6, 6-6, 7-5 at Mich St.

He went 8-5 at LSU 2x

He went 7-6 at Alabama.

Saban has gone 5-3 or worse in conference 8 times.

Richt has only gone 5-3 or worse in conference 3 times in his first 9 years.

Compare that to Saban’s record and consistency in his 1st 9 years.

Richt has NEVER had a 7-6 or 6-6 season, Saban’s done it 5 times, including once at Alabama.

Reality Check

Reading these recent comments, it seems as though SOME Georgia fans are coming to the conclusion that Richt won’t take the program to the promised land. The rest of you will settle for 2nd or 3rd best.
