Don’t let spring break stop the Dawg talk

georgia logoI know a lot of you are off this week because many schools are on spring break. I’m taking off the first half of the week, but the Blawg will return on Thursday as we get ready for the G-Day game at Sanford Stadium in Athens.

In the meantime, keep checking out those spring practice reports in Tim Tucker’s beat blog, and feel free to continue talking UGA sports right here.

Until Thursday …

I feel like the Brits in 1940 waiting on news from Dunkirk. Maybe the whole taxi thing is a false alarm. But we’ve already gotten terrible news which was apparently unrelated. I feel great about the O-Line and receivers (though thin in both departments) really good about the rb’s and am looking forward to depth chart news on these promising young qb’s. But we’re paper thing at olb and we’ve just been diminished in that department with the Montrez R. news. Any injurues or bad taxi news at that position and a safety will have to move over or a true frosh will have to step up.Hopefully things won’t play out as grim as I fear. We’re not alone. Alabama has real secondary issues now- a place they’ve been rock solid for two years-Coach Saban’s specialty.

…4 large, black, males in a taxi, are let off at East Village dorms after “allegedly” hitting a guy and his gal/wife – the 4 are alleged to be football players, but everybody wants to know “how” the “victims” knew they were football players…

Uh, don’t most football players live in this dorm?

Robinson was an athlete, but I think it is good that he is gone. A bad seed and it sends a message that CMR doesn’t take any crap just because he is a nice guy. Hopefully other potential trouble makers will take notice.

While it is painful for any person to not realize what is being thrown away, maybe this will send a message to the rest of the team. Do not follow the rules and you are gone. Only if this had happen before where would things be today, at least not in the newspaper evey week about someone on the team doing something wrong.

If Richt doesn’t take “any crap” then he would have kicked Robinson off the team after the first incident.

Since Richt gave him a second chance, it’s obvious that Richt didn’t deal with the problem to the extent that he should have. Even if dealing with it meant kicking him off the team after the first incident.

kicking montez off the team, richt is sending the message. i applaud him for giving him a 2nd chance but if you mess that up, bye bye, your off the team. not to mention, wasn’t montez beating up his girl? in any case, he needs to get his butt kicked. we should be fine in the LB dept..you can always move nick williams back to LB from Safety.

What up Dawg fans? Your baseball team gave us a tough series in the first two games. Ya’ll beat us pretty good in the second game, but then we had to take care of business in the rubber match. Even though your record isn’t good now, that team will be good. Its mostly all fresh and sophs. You guys were just in the CWS in ‘08, but lost a lot of talent from that team like Beckham. As for my Tigers, we lost Schimpf, Mitchell, Ochinko, and Lamahieu, but we just keep reloading, and are ready to make another run to OMAHA! Geaux LSU Tigers!!!

Just a humble opinion ……….when we recruit in far away places like Indiana, you do not get to hear the “skinny” on the kid. In other words, if a kid is from Thomasville or Hahira, you know that there are tons and tons of elders in town that can relate the real truth to the potential school about him.

Is he a decent, humble hard working kid with a real gpa and from a solid, southern high school or is he speciman looking to just play and sign in three years with the NFL with a lousy, selfish attitude ………….then if so, the school can make a hard decision ro move on.

I believe Richt did the right thing. We should not have players who display a track record of poor character. That young man should stay in school at Georgia and make it his priority to develop some maturity. His main goal should not be football, but regaining a good name. It can be done with God’s help. Maybe then Richt would give him a second chance in a year or two. Remember the player from Oregon vs. Boise State who was reinstated at the end of the year?

There is no proof at all at this point that athletes were involved. The “oh, I think they are football players because they are big, black, and in Athens” line is not enough to start talking ish about UGA and the control of the athletics department. I find it very hard to believe that the police report is an accurate depiction of what happened. If it is and it turns out football players were involved, then the perpetrators should and will be punished accordingly.

Until then, everyone just needs to shut the hell up.

Every school has these situations and unfortunately it is more a reflection on our society than on any one school or coach. Mark Richt can’t follow these guys around in taxis to make sure they aren’t being unruly anymore that Urban Meyer can go undercover in Gainesville clubs to make sure his guys conduct themselves properly. But I think what ALL coaches need to start doing is being less tolerant when some of these behaviors happen. Striking a woman or threatening a sexual act should be a no brainer even if it’s a first offense. Firing a gun in a threatening manner towards anyone should be an automatic “see ya later”. I think if all coaches took this stance, you’d see a lot less of this behavior and even if you did, you wouldn’t see it for long…

How about explaining to these young men that if you do anything that even remotely cast UGA in a bad light…you will lose your free ride and be sent packing within 24 hrs. It’s time CMR mans’ up about the recruits he brings in. I don’t know what to say when these guys make the choices they do. That said, I think UGA under Richt cares much MORE than most universities do about their student-athletes. We begin by turning away a number of athletes that get accepted by other major programs, then we discipline them more consistently when they get out of line while a part of the program, and we dump them when they’ve gotten excessive. The sporting world isn’t perfect, but athletes across the board should be held more accountable for their actions when they are representing more that themselves.

The news that 4 UGA football players could “POSSIBLY” be involved has had everyone in the fan base worried that this time would really give the program a black eye. In a situation such as that was appearing to be, alchohol would have been involved, there would have been multiple suspensions and some serious damage to the image of the university, the football program, the players, and the entire coaching staff.

Coach Richt has a great opportunity here to show his team that even when they are not in the wrong, they live under a tremendous microscope and every move they make is being watched and nothing they do will go unnoticed in the age of technology that we live in. Something will be caught on video phone, audio record, or video camcorder. Twitter, facebook, myspace all make information ready at a click of a button, and bad news travels faster than good news in most cases.

The young man and member of the football team who did the right thing has a lesson to learn here though. The police report says the incidents took place at 2:04am on that late Saturday night and early Sunday morning. 2:04am? Really? If I am Coach Richt, I gently put my arm around his shoulders and ask him kindly to please BE IN HIS DORM at 2:04am from now on.

Sure he did the right thing, but the young men he was hanging out with obviously were not. He needs to also watch who he is associating himself with. I dont know what kind of curfew rules there are for the football team or any of the student-athletes at the University of Georgia, but im sure there isnt a place in there encouraging them to be downtown at 2:04am where anything can be assumed and accused. (as we have just witnessed)

This is a very good opportunity for the coaches to do a little teaching, tighten up some rules, and thank God that nothing happened. This time.

I hate to agree with Saint Simons. I’m an alumn, but there is some truth to UGA becoming Thug U. CMR better grow a set and come down hard on these young men. Building character? How? When a team depends on you and you pull the stupid stunts and criminal acts that some of them have, one has to wonder if the inmates are running the institution. This has been a perfect storm brewing. If you gave me a free ride to UGA, I wouldn’t be getting tanked at downtown bars or beating up women. Disgusting.

I don’t know what you mean “nothing happened.” A football player was drunk at 2:04 a.m. and out with 3 dire criminals. He did such a great job of seeing to it that nothing happened, drunk at 2:04 a.m. that his cohorts out with him threatened to gang bang a woman, hit her and the man with her. This is supposed to be good news after Montez Robinson as a football player beat up a girl student for the 2nd time and in between both of those broke her lights on her vehicle. 1 game, then another 2 game and now kicked off the team suspensions for that football player after our QB a leading candidate for Starting QB got into it with the police disorderly conduct obstruction and oh by the way, both are underage alcohol.

THIS just since the beginning of Spring Practice. God help us during the Summer when we have no supervision for our 90 now arrested / suspended in the Coach Richt Era.

What is there to talk about. Hopefully we can muster six wins this year. We are young and have new coaching, there will be a learning curve, and lets keep Richt from pulling gimmicks like he has done in the past. Keep the jerseys a respectable color, don’t let the hoodlums run wild, and for goodness sakes learn to tackle.

Montez Mania 1st off answer the question is CUM on the road to recovery or headed to LA-LA land? Bull Dawg not to inject common sense to your rant..but whoever proved anyone was drunk in that taxi? The couple who were out drinking said so…BFD they admited they were drunk..it wasn’t the police hard to prove someone is drunk 2 days after the fact. And last I looked it was still legal to be out a 2:00 a.m in a college town.

Wondering?

I’m wondering if you can connect the dots between off field behavior to on field behavior? The Dawgs especially on defense and wide receiver talk a lot of smack during the game. I watched the Under Armor HS all star game and could not believe the amount of talking smack that was going on. Just seems like there is a culture of non-discipline. My observation is that Coach Johnson of Tech doesn’t put up with this, and has more on field discipline by the Tech Players. UF certainly talks major smack and has major problems with its players off the field. But, it seems like UF has had more on-field discipline (less penalties). I wonder if this was the result of the greatness of Tim Tebow in bringing responsibility and accountability on the field? Seems like a lot of parallels between FSU and UGA with CMR and Coach Bowden. Are CMR and Coach Bowden (both wonderful Christian men) not hard enough as to discipline? Does every program really need a “hard nose” Christian type leader like Tebow or no nonsense coach like CPJ at Tech?

wondering? Johnson just cant recruit the type of atlete that he wants or he would have the same problems.

Lunch break so I can give more comments. I wonder if the Dawgs are recruiting the “right” type of athletes? What’s better? — (A) the 5 star HS players with “MeAngelo Hall” type heads that have great physical ability but never can achieve on field greatness because they can not control their emotions and lack discipline or (B) the 2 and 3 star HS players that have their head on straight and have a Team perspective rather than a ME first attitude. While Basketball is not exactly the same as Football, look at the success of the mid-majors like Butler against all the 5 star loaded (future NBA high draft picks) college teams. While I don’t think the Lane Kiffin type coaches are going to be successful long term on the field, I think they will continue to be highly successful in recruiting 4 and 5 star players — telling these MeAngelo types what they want to hear — come here and do what you want to do, have fun, be pampered and be treated as privileged, and be a 1st round draft pick!

Something else to think about — Is UGA football following in the same footpaths of the decline of great programs at FSU and Miami because of lack of discipline? Look at how Miami appears to be turning things around to return to greatness by having a hard nose no BS coach in coach Shannon.

Wondering? Miami turning it around? Where have you been, the Canes suck and if they don’t improve, Shannon is gone.

Gosh, I think going 9-4 with some pretty nice wins over GT and OK was kinda turning it around from where the Miami program had fallen to. I think Coach Shannon is trying very hard to “rebuild the right way” as a no nonsense coach. Miami was clearly Thug U in their fall.

That is your excuse for the fine job of breaking it up that our 18-year old recruit from last year’s recruiting class with Montez Robinson, did ? I mean he and the other 3 who got into the Taxi were reported by witnesses as being drunk. It was 2:04 a.m. on a day when Spring Practice was not that day, but the next day. The other 3, with our recruit from last year’s recruiting class playing peace maker, told the woman that they were going to gang bang her, told both the woman and the man to turn around “if he wanted to live.” They then hit or slapped the man. They then slapped the woman. I just have to say that that is a fine job of being a peace maker with our Georgia Bulldogs’ Football Player out running around at 2:04 a.m. with these 3 crimials. He did a really fine job of breaking it up. Just imagine if he hadn’t broken it up, what would have happened. Our football player is such a hero being out with these 3 at 2 a.m. I would not want to turn evidence on those 3, I can tell you that.
