Battling QBs and a mediocre weekend for other UGA teams

Zach Mettenberger (left) had a good scrimmage; Logan Gray, not so much. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

A family wedding had me spending the weekend in South Carolina and, for the most part, away from the sports scene (though my daughter and I briefly tuned in to the Lady Dogs’ demolition by Stanford Saturday night before deciding it was too painful to watch). Perusing the Greenville News’ sports pages Sunday morning, I didn’t glean much of interest from reports on Clemson and South Carolina’s spring practice other than Steve Spurrier plans on using cornerback Stephon Gilmore more in the “Wild Cock” offense this season.

Back home, I scanned the various UGA news sites for reports on the Dogs’ Saturday scrimmage and didn’t see anything particularly surprising. The quarterback battle looks to be developing much like I’d expected: Logan Gray’s passing numbers were pretty mediocre and he was sacked three times, strong-armed Zach Mettenberger is much improved and had the best passing stats and longest TD throw but isn’t very mobile (two sacks), and Aaron Murray isn’t that much better than the others but is doing just well enough to probably rank at the top of the depth chart.

Bottom line: Murray most likely will start, but once his suspension is out of the way Mettenberger might be a stronger backup than many expected. Too soon to write off Gray? Perhaps, but if he’s going to turn things around, he better hurry.

What else? The Gym Dogs had only a middling SEC tournament but look to be positioned well to move on out of their NCAA regional. And the baseball team, well, David Perno unloaded on his bullpen following another late-innings meltdown after entering the eighth inning against Mississippi State with an 8-run lead.

The coach told The Red and Black of the loss: “It’s devastating. It could potentially just throw our whole season away. “It may keep us out of [the SEC Tournament in] Birmingham. That’s how bad it is.”

Don’t sugar-coat it, Coach.

BULLDOG BITES

Anyway, in catching up on the Dogs news, I found some items of interest …

Those who lament the way Kiante Tripp has had his UGA career basically wasted by too many position changes should be encouraged by this quote from fellow defensive end Demarcus Dobbs in the Bulldogs Blog: “Kiante Tripp, he has that big body. He has an NFL-type body. All he needed was an opportunity, and I think he’s taking advantage of this opportunity to really shine.”

AJC colleague Michael Carvell’s Prep Zone has an interview with former Dogs great Robert Edwards, the new head football coach at Arlington Christian. Edwards, who’s visited UGA’s spring practice, thinks the change in defensive leadership at Georgia was needed, and on offense he sees “they have the playmakers. They have to establish them a quarterback, but they have a nice trio of running backs that can complement each other. They have a tight end who is going to be All-Conference, and probably the best wide reciever in the nation. They just have to find someone to get them the ball. I think the O-line has been banged up the last couple of years. They can’t seem to stay healthy. If they stay healthy, then it will be the key to the success of the offense.”

On the tailbacks, he says, “I think Washaun Ealey is outstanding. He still has to find his way but he shows glimpes of that Knowshon Moreno-type of swagger. And Caleb King, being a guy myself who came off injury, it takes a while to overcome it. I know a lot of people expected him to bounce back after one year, but it takes longer for some people. Toward the end of last season, people saw that he was getting stronger and he was having more confidence and running with more authority. … The third back [Carlton Thomas] comes in and gives them a change of pace as far as screens and catching passes out of the back, while Branden Smith comes in for reverses and direct snaps. So they have a lot weapons they use, and I’m excited to see how [Mike] Bobo calls plays this season.”

This is good news for my son up in D.C.: Marc Weiszer of The Athens Banner-Herald reports that for those who don’t get CSS, the telecast of the G-Day game will be shown live on ESPN360.com.

The Macon Telegraph notes that while UGA’s basketball ticket sales weren’t up that much in Mark Fox’s first season in Athens from the 6,700 seats generally sold, the attendance “almost doubled,” according to Frank Crumley, executive associate athletics director, from an average of less than 3,000 per game to more than 4,000. As Fox tells his players, “our fans, they’ll come back and support you like you’ve never seen before if you play the game the right way.”

Elsewhere, Athens made MSN’s honor roll of college towns, with heavy emphasis on “an aesthetic community that has spawned Widespread Panic, Of Montréal, Danger Mouse and of course, R.E.M.

And a Boston Globe columnist recapped many of the the longstanding complaints about UGA President Michael Adams in a piece arguing there’s no way Adams should be considered as president of the NCAA. Says the Globe’s Bob Ryan: “Michael Adams is a spinmeister. He is a clever and ruthless politician. He was once chief of staff to then-Senate Minority Leader Howard Baker. He knows how to amass allies — a power-seeking liquor magnate named Donald Leebern being the most prominent — and he knows how to wield power. He is not a leader. He is a schemer and an intimidator.”

As I said last fall, the thought of Adams leaving Athens to head the NCAA leaves a lot of us with very mixed feelings.

Got any thoughts on any of that or anything else to do with UGA sports? Feel free to share them in the comments.

Observer – every fanbase that has success without a national title has woulda coulda shouldas. It’s what you do as a fan – cheer your team on, hope for greatness, and wine a bit when your team either hits rock bottom or gets so close to coming out on top. UGA’s best Richt teams were just as good as most others that have won title’s in the SEC. Was LSU’s two loss team better than UGA’s in 2007? I’d certainly argue they weren’t better than UGA in 2002 – the one loss UGA team. The national landscape just doesn’t always work out, so you need to win ‘em all (unless you are Auburn like you said). Maybe UGA will soon.

So let me understand this AceDawg, you get solace from the fact that you are every bit as good as the teams that won? No wonder Richt has it made; he has you convinced that you will win every year and when you don’t, you rationalize that you were just as good or better than the team that won, so you feel good about yourself. In 2007, UGA wasn’t even the best team in the East but somehow you think they were better than LSU. This is priceless.

Bill, has Richt or anyone else within the program given an opinion as to may have the lead so far in the QB battle?

This maybe the most awaited season for UGA in recent memory. We have many skill players and now finally some coaches on defense who can coach them up. I get a real sense of urgency and I hope it shows up in the play of the DOGS in all aspects of play. Winning will quench the naysayers and bugs on this blog.

Adams should just go to the edge of town,to be swung from a strong oak with a rope

logan’s not that good. Mettenberger should be the starting QB on talent, but murray will get the job due to the 1st game suspension. Either should be good enough to win the SEC east this year—florida’s way down and tennessee has no talent. Look for the Dawgs to play bama for the SEC title.

Love the comments by the Boston writer on Prez Adams. Makes him sound worse than Joe Stalin.

I can’t find another blog to put it on today, but maybe he can convince BC that they really need Paul Hewitt to fill the vacancy they have.

Is 41% Good?

It could be worse than Georgia, we could be stuck with John Brantley and his 41% completion rate in his scrimmage. And he got picked for a td, in the red zone, that was returned for a td. Ouch!

Thank goodness we’re not stuck with the 25 year old Gatorade player of the year QB curse–(no Gatorade Player of the Year QB ever won a National Championship).

I really enjoy this blog. Don’t care much about anything from the AJC. Since I DISAGREE COMPLETELY WITH “ALL” of the negative remarks about the coaches & the players (the commentors are wrong) , I have no other comment.

No one is saying yet whether any of the three QBs is in the lead.

Texas or Florida

Brantley was good enough to get a full ride to Texas, or Florida…who will be Brantley’s back up? the only other QB listed is Trey Burton, a dual-threat QB, (more run, less on the pass, was listed as an athlete more than a QB)…doesn’t sound like the Gators are as concerned about 41%…might want to wait till you beat him before crowing, or you just might find out what feathers taste like…

Adams is a certified crook. His latest bad deed was to try to con the General Assembly.

Hutson Mason is a joke. Why is his name even being mentioned on this blog? He’ll never see the field at UGA barring a catastrophe.

I pray and hope that Adams gets the job as president of the NCAA, so we can be rid of this outsider from UGA. What an @sshole Adams is.

Brantley’s good, but will be no match for Grantham and his new 3-4 D that is designed to shut down the spread and get QB pressure–Florida’s O will have big problems this year—bank on it. Dawgs win big!!!!

I don’t think Corch Myers will be able to field a spread team this year.

Making one of his best backs a receiver? A straight drop-back passer behind center?

First time in his career he hasn’t had running threat at QB.

And it is now very obvious he doesn’t have a clue how to coach up a “real quarterback”.

Right, Deonte?

Boy had to completely change his mechanics just to be considered as a pick at QB. That is not his fault.

The fault lies with his coaches. And will be blatantly, painfully obvious to everybody this year. No more quick TD’s from the 5. Gotta throw it, now. Might get run back 95…but?

Smith wasn’t too shabby at Utah…Chris Leak, Tim Tebow at Florida, and Josh Harris at Bowling Green…seems he does an okay job w/ QB’s…moving Chris Rainey (5′9″ 175 – 4.37 in the 40) from RB will pay off big time…Rainey in space = big problems for opposing teams…Meyer seems to be able to evaluate talent and put it where it pays off for the team…just don’t understand why you guys don’t think Meyer can coach, beat him a few times then you can talk

Aaron Murray will be the QB for Georgia for the next 4 years.

There is a wide separation between Murray and the other 2. Murray has “special” written all over him.

Brantley is not a spread QB—no running threat at all, which will not work in that offense. One hit on the option and he’ll go down like a house of cards. Ga’s 3-4 D will dominate that game with florida in 2010—no question.

Aaron Murray special. LMFAO!! I fell off the couch when I read this. This is hilarious. I hope he does start for the next 4 yrs. He will break Mattie Staffords record for most INT’s and PIC SIXES.
