Coach Warren Belin wants to know where these guys learned to tackle. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)
It wasn’t as big a factor as turnovers, but the Dogs have been plagued the past couple of seasons by poor tackling.
Flipping through some of my little game notebooks from last year, a frequent theme crops up: “Missed tackle.” “Poor tackling.”
Too often you saw Georgia defenders try to make a tackle from a bad angle or not wrap their arms and stick their heads into the chest of the ball carrier and drive them down. And then there were those awful occasions where they didn’t even really try to make an actual tackle, just hitting or bumping the guy as if that would make him fall down.
There’d be some improvement from game to game, but overall it was a team weakness under Willie Martinez’s staff, a point made this week in practice by coach Warren Belin in a quote that has lit up the blogosphere: “Where did you guys learn to tackle the last five years?”
Ouch. You know Mark Richt had to wince when he saw that reported. I’m guessing that’s one of the reasons why head coaches generally only let the media have limited access to practice.
Fans, of course, react differently. You can’t fix a problem unless you acknowledge it, and it’s encouraging to hear someone addressing the situation head on.
And that’s the good news from all this: The new coaches appear to be trying to do something about it.
Fletcher Page reports in his practice notes on DawgPost.com that it “seems like the defensive coaches are determined to get Georgia tackling better. Coach Warren Belin has been especially adamant about driving through the ball carrier … There has been added emphasis put on proper tackling technique. Coach [Scott] Lakatos likes physicality in the secondary. We know coach [Todd] Grantham is all about it as well. The staff is working from the ground up, developing proper technique and fundamentals first. Belin, I’ve especially noticed, is meticulous about the little things. He preaches proper helmet placement, driving through the ball, proper way to wrap up while driving, etc. This type of conversation should excite Bulldogs fans.”
That’s an understatement.
NO EXCUSES FOR DOGS IN 2010?
CollegeFootballNews.com’s spring preview of Georgia notes that the Dogs “have to find more explosion and more production on offense” and the big spring question is “can the defense be more aggressive?” The most important question, they say, is who will start at quarterback, noting “in a perfect world, this is figured out and settled on as soon as possible.”
But CFN’s overall assessment of Georgia’s prospects sees a lot of potential this season: “No excuses. Georgia isn’t as talented as Florida, but it’s easily the second best team in the [SEC] East and it has the schedule to do some very big things. While there’s a lot of work to be done and there are a lot of concerns, the schedule is too light to ask for anything less than a big season with the toughest road games at South Carolina and Auburn. The Dawgs miss Alabama and LSU from the West and get Arkansas, Tennessee, and Georgia Tech at home. Again, no excuses.”
What do you think? On the money, or too optimistic?

“Where did you guys learn to tackle the last five years?” Kudos to Coach Belin for diagnosing one of the main problems with UGA’s defense since Van Gorder departed. We have had great players on defense who were undercoached. I respect coaches like Coach Belin who tell it like it is.

Evidently, Coach Belin watched the film of the GT game in 08. I have been watching UGA football for over 40 years and that was the worst excuse ever for a defense. I hope he gets this corrected and we can play like real “Junkyard Dawgs”.

The defense would have won a few more games if they had just finished the tackle. The offense would have won a few more games had they had not turned it over or relied on the big play. If you can control the clock with long drives the defense has fewer chances to blow it.
GT ‘07 was the worst example of finishing a tackle as well as the worst production on offense I have watched in a long time.
There is no reason why the WLOCP shouldn’t decide the SEC East other than coaches not getting the players ready.

WOW, This is EXACTLY what needed to be addressed. How can you not feel good about the way Coach Belin is handling things.
Helmet Placement is one reason the Georgia Secondary members got a few 15 yard penalties for good hits.
They have been avoiding issues for the last several years. It seems that they are addressing those rather obvious descrepancies now. This is Awesome.

From Nick Williams, who is moving back to safety:
“He’s (Lakatos) big on putting your face in there and striking people. He’s a very aggressive coach,” Williams said. “He’s about being aggressive; he’s about setting a tone. It ain’t about laying back. If you’re going to catch a touchdown pass on us, you’re going to pay for it and I love that about him.”
Lakatos’ hands-on approach is winning favor with players like Williams as well.
“I love that about him, and I like how he coaches me,” he said. “It’s different than last year. He’s hands on. He’ll get on you, but when he gets on you he gets on you in a respectful manner. He’ll get on you hard but it’s just about football.”
The more I read, the more obvious it is that Martinez was slack and there were many fundamental problems with the ‘D’. I still can’t believe Richt gave that guy another year! Are we going through the same thing with Bobo as well as the conditioning coach???

I think we have reason to be optimistic, and this schedule is about as light as it gets in the SEC East, but there are still a lot of opportunities to lose. I am particularly worried about the S. Carolina game. It’s always too close and can go either way, though we have been fortunate to come out on top more often than not. I am particularly concerned about an untested QB facing the perennially tough SC defense. Hopefully they won’t be as good as last year, and hopefully our O-line will step up and make some holes for our running game, to take the pressure off the new QB. That will be an early challenge, and there will be several lose-able games throughout the season. I don’t think we should take any SEC conference game lightly, even Vandy.

Sounds right to me. UGA should be a top tier team with the program continuity under Richt, high level recruiting, and a new NFL tested coach on defense. At the extreme minimum, UGA would have to be as good on defense and better on offense than the year before if there is any hope at all to Richt remaining the right guy for the head job. A new quarterback shouldn’t stop offensive progression with everything in place and acknowledgement that our young QB’s are supposed to be better than Cox anyway.

Frankly though, it is the defense where things must turn around for the team to be a contender again. If they improve the way Dawgs fans think they are going to under Grantham, it’ll make the offene tougher too since they have to hit shoulder pads all season in practice and will be forced to be tougher to counter the aggressive, better executing defense. Better coaching means more to UGA than losing some veterans on defense because of the fact that UGA recruits major athletes.

We need a more explosive offense? Our offense was prety explosive last year. We either threw up points or threw up on ourselves. Exploded the scoreboard or imploded on ourselves. We had a lot of points over the season, but we also had a lot of mistakes. We don’t need more explosions. We need to run the ball.
Every year I’ve been alive I’ve been told you need two things to win in the SEC: run the ball and stop the run. Explosions only get you on the good and bad highlight reels.

The coach’s statement is 100% correct. Yechie fans knew this in 08 in Athens, when now departed
( TG&GHG) UGA safety #09 blew tackle after tackle along with 40% of the UGA D that day. That same year in a win vs Auburn, UGA was very, very lucky to win ………. lousy tackling UGA employed in that game. Too many other games to name over the last few years.
That is in the past and now is now and UGA with this new D. staff will be a fundamentally SOUND team from stem to stern. If not …………….well then, we can correct that as well.
Identify the problem, solve it and move forward is the way to run a railroad and a football team and UGA is on the right track, now.
Respect is a huge part of this transition period and the fans already RESPECT the new coaches and I suspect that so do the players. When UGA wins big games consistently, the respect will be also from our overall conference. Time will tell. The ingredients are there ….talent, attitude, schedule and personal pride.

And then there’s that loyalty thing.

What was our average time of possession last year compared to our opponents? Our mistakes, and overall lack of discipline contributed to that glaring discrepency. Our lack of commitment to a power running game also contributed. Find your all american fullback Bobo. Run the ball. What is CMR’s record when we have a back go over 100 yrds? If I’m calling plays you can bet one of our main objectives is to have a rusher break 100yds. It obviously works. We have the O-line and backs to get it done. DO IT!! Win the game by running and controlling the clock. Duh.

One of the bloggers, Bill King? said last summer that CWM barked out some pass coverage instructions to #3 and fabulous # 9 and they slowly walked back to him muttering” yeah, whatever you say coach.”
I know, i know, it was hot and they were exhausted and dehydrated BUT they showed 0 respect for CWM and that was a root cause of UGA D deficiencies. No respect for the D staff or maybe even the entire staff prior to this year in awhile. THAT will change with the new crew and in fact HAS already changed.
All orgainizations need a ( Ali’s pal ) Bundini to motivate, cajole and inspire. It is the way it is. A sargeant in the fox hole might be that guy, where as maybe the young LT has no respect from the men but they PERFORM BECAUSE of Sarge. It takes on all kinds of personnas does respect.
Respect is earned and is not purchased at the store and it knows no social or moral or racial or economic boundaries. It can also be spelled Mark Fox or Todd Grantham, or Erk Russell or Bud Grant or Don Shula or UGA LB coach Blevins or D back coach Latakatos ( sorry for the poor spelling swith these two men ) or Bear Bryant.
Coach TG and Company have that so important and KEY characteristic.

The above three men have some things in common. Kelley for example, played at U of M with Richt and all 3 played QB in college. Fran and Jim Kelley also played QB in the NFL with long, stellar careers. Neither of these two ever won a Super Bowl. Oh, then to use the standards employed here by so many um, ah, “experts” Kelley and Fran are losers and failures; even though between them there are about 8 or 10 Super Bowl games.
The Atlanta Braves in the 90s are a perfect example of that STUPID argument that “unless so and so wins the World Series or the Super Bowl or the NC then that coach or player is a loser”. Jim Brown never, ever played in a Super Bowl. Is he a loser running back or Earl Cambell??
For a QB to get to the Super bowl as many times as did Trakenton and Kelley is to PROVE their greatness. Richt? his record proves that he is one of the best. Yes, with losses to KY and Vandy and how ever many losses to Florida and ONE LOSS to laughable Tech.
NC?? Oh heck yeah …………that would be nice for UGA. I suspect however, that 90% of the morons on the several blogs procaliming that say with ” no NC, then ( Mark Richt ) is a failure” are not even college educated.

This is the best news I have heard about Spring Ball to date. I love it. While I agree that Richt might have cringed when those statements became public… Richt knows his defense didn’t perform the last few years. I don’t think a head coach gets rid of the entire defensive staff save one including a former college roomate if the D is getting it done and tackling is about as key a thing as a defense does.
While the proof will be on the field as to whether we are better tacklers and a better defense, I like the fact that the coaches are making this a priority. If I hear that the next priorities oare penalties and turnovers then I become more optomistic about next season.

UGA lost about 8 – 10 games over the last 4 or 5 years that could have been won with at least an average SEC caliber effort. WVA game, KY TWICE! and VANDY and yes, Florida. Tech for sure.
The Auburn game where they were what….. 4th and 30 and they hit a 55 yarder up the middle down to the 3 yd line??? How about 2 of the last 4 UT games. Come on …………we really just laid down on them. No effort ……………..none.
Several others come to mind like Ok State and LSU in 09 and whew ……….glad that clown and his staff are gone.

That is great that Coach Belin have indentified the problem. Although it didnt take a Rocket Secientist to see that. But it does mean a lot that the Coach publicly mention it. Not that the problem has been identified, lets fix it. I have huge positive expectations for the Dawgs this year. They should definitely win the SEC East this year hands down.

I like what I’m hearing from the defensive coaches. I have no doubt that this group will do a much better job than the previous regime. The only question marks on defense will be how long it takes to get these guys understanding the new scheme and feeling confident. Also, it may take another recruiting season or two before Grantham can get the kind of players he needs to run his defense effectively. Two things that I have heard this spring from our new defensive assitants, that make me smile, are- Belin taking charge and acknowleding there is a serious problem with tackling fundamentas. Secondly, when Latakos said he likes big physical corners instead of midgets. Music to my ears!!!

I might be overly optimistic about the D, but I think Grantham and the new UGA staff is going to create a lot of problems for opposing offenses this year. I’m very excited about the new 3-4 scheme and the things they are emphasizing. Belin has every right to ask where they learned to tackle, because our tackling sucked under Martinez.
I’m more concerned about the offense, because of the QB situation. It is damn difficult to break a new QB into the SEC. So much on offense depends on how well your QB plays and if Murray isn’t the break away guy by now we could struggle come Fall.
I would love to see us beat Florida and UT this year, but I’ll settle for the Vols.

But I think its also painfully obvious that Richt doesn’t have any stones when it comes to disciplining his players.(and never has) He reminds me a lot of his mentor Bobby Bowden, another proud Christian who also seemed to have a different morale compass when it came to managing his football team. And as for what WE GOT next year, we’ve got Paul Johnson. And I’ll take him anyday over the sackless wonder in Athens.

I definitely like everything I’m hearing coming out of Athens these days…but everyone has to be cautiously optimistic. There are sure to be growing pains and the OoC schedule is a lot lighter this year, and yes we don’t get Bama or LSU….but, I believe that Ark & MSU are going to be much improved and very well could be equally as tough this year.
Our skill positions and O-line should be able to take some of the pressure off of the young QB’s, but I am worried about Bobo…but, with the change in the D scheme that they have to go against everyday…that could be just what the Dr. ordered to light a fire under EVERYONE’S butts! I hope!!!
The Special Teams….specifically Kick Coverage can only improve.
I’ve heard some rumbling about Logan still going to be the punt returner/receiver on short field returns…I don’t have a problem with that especially since I saw at least twice last year returners, not Logan, either catch the ball on the 2,1, or 1/2 yard line…NO EXCUSE!

How can you be a Div-I recruit and not know how to tackle?? And how can you be a player on a defense that gives up 30-40 points in big games, and not let that bother you?? I mean how can you not care THAT much!!! I mean at what point do the players need to take accountability for what is happening? Well these boys are finding out pretty quick with this new coaching staff that if they don’t bust their asses and earn their scholarships, then they are going to be demoted to the practice squad pretty fast! Defense is about heart and desire and if you don’t have the stones for it, then you shouldn’t be playing on that side of the ball. Period!

One problem with the offense that needs to be addressed is when UGA is winning by more than 10 points at half time it is time to put the pedal down not change your game plan or go into a defensive mode in the second half. One of the things that frustrates to no end is to score 21 or 24 pts at half and score only 7 to 10 points in the second half when you know you could have scored a total north of 40 points. UGA has been letting way to many teams back into games in the second half because they change game plans at the half.” IF IT AIN’T BROKE DON’T FIX IT” When you let a team back into a game it is fuel that can be used against you next year. But if UGA beats a team soundly that teams go’s into the next years game already beaten mentally. That one reason Fla. has such consistent success against UGA.

I think we will see great improvement on defense in the Fall. It’s not just that the 3-4 scheme will be an improvement, but better fundamentals will make a big, big difference. I’m just so happy to see Belin calling it like it is that I’m going to drink to him in about 15 minutes.
And just for the record, I’ll take an improved defense and an unexperienced QB over last year’s sloppy defense and 5th year “experienced” QB.

It’s true we have sucked at tackling since BVG left. Belin is a solid LB’s coach just look at the player’s he coached up at Vandy. I expect much improvement from our LB core this year. I am also optimistic about Lakatos. It sounds to me like the players are buying into the new approach and like the fact that nobody is penciled in as a starter as in years past. I’d like to hear what we are up to on special teams. I hope we adopt a strategy like FL and make it a badge of honor to be on special teams. I want our starters on the field for every special team since ST end up influencing every game in a major way. Treat it that way!

This is “low hanging fruit.” Too easy with too many examples to recall. Don’t fault Coach Belin for stating the obvious. Coaches Belin, Lakatos, and Grantham weren’t brought in because the D was doing things correctly. Expect some mistakes early, due to the new scheme and difference in assignments, but by mid 2010, the Dawg D should be able to man-up against anyone. It will be nice to once again watch a game where we don’t have to score 40 points to win. If Murray can simply protect the ball, and make a few plays, we are drastically improved!

One last thing…..yes, Bobo’s play calling needs to improve, but he was handicapped last year with JC at QB. Try as he might, Joe couldn’t make a lot of the needed plays, so Bobo had to go back to the basics. Bobo knows he needs to perform, or he could follow some of the defensive guys out the door.

And, now this season, we have 3 freshmen quarterbacks and one 4-year quarterback whom we asked to move to wide receiver, but he doesn’t want to.
Afraid to study the offense ?
Bill King, you admit in the opening line that the REAL PROBLEM has been on OFFENSE with our total inability to line up and actually run a play without a penalty, and when we did, we either fumbled or threw an interception. And, then there are all the guys on the Offensive Depth Chart buried behind those who are NO WHERE NEAR AS GOOD as the 1 Starting.
Only good positive discussion allowed, so all you ever bring up Altamaha Dawg, Bill King and RED DOG 77, is discussion about the Defense ?

Tech fan here: Question. Do you think that that bad tackling and bad tackling angles could have something to do withthe ungodly amounnt of injuries that UGA football has experienced in the last few years. Seems like every game a starter was getting 3-6 week injuries. My theory, atleast on the defensive side, is that they are related… Bad Technique not only leads to missed tackles but often times…injuries…Any thoughts?

Bottom line at Muttville is that its all up the asst. coaches. Their Chief Figurehead in charge is a non-factor in whether they’ll improve or not. With the tinker-man Bobo running their offense, if its not broke, he’ll try to break it. At least their new asst. defensive coaches will be self-motivated. But their schedule definitely makes this a NO EXCUSES year. So what will their excuse be when they don’t get it done?

Saint Tech. How about 3 years ago when Richt suspended a starting TE (Chandler) for 3 games for open container violation? He was 21 years old and it was during the Summer. Has tech ever done that? Tell me the name of the player. Does nobody drink at tech that is under 21? I agree with you that 1 game for Mett is too little. I might sound like a hypocrite since I think the 21 year old drinking age is a dumb law that turns law abiding citizens (like myself when I as under 21) into fake id carrying criminals and probably puts more kids at risk by forcing drinking underground. It is as effective as prohibition was and as we all know that was a disaster for this country. Why have a law that virtually EVERYBODY violates?? Punish drunk drivers, but don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.
However, Richt should send a stronger message to the team about following HIS team’s rules. 3 games minimum.

You fan’s need to realize that you have a good coach, but not one that can get you over the hump required to get to the elite level. Don’t know who would be better at replacing him, but the guy is just too wishy-washy. What’s up with Met and his suspension, pull the trigger and get this soap opera off the front page that’s hanging over the team all spring. Whack him with a 3 game bye-bye, why wait for anything else, what do you not get about the charges he has against him, show some leadership. Send notice to the entire team ,so that they can see what repercussions there will be if you can’t conduct yourself as a scholarship athlete, and all the while you are representing the University of Georgia. Maybe this will filter down to the rest of the team. Grow a set. Never had a coach who did everything by committee.

That is what an effective running game is intended to do. Force the defense to load the box to stop the run. That opens up the passing game where your quarterback and great receivers have a chance to shine. When the defense has to back off to slow down the passing game, you go back to the running game. They call it “taking what the defense is giving you”, but you must BE ABLE to take it when you get it. Without an EFFECTIVE running game you cannot dictate what the defense has to do in order to stop you! When you can force the defense to play your game plan, you are controlling the game. When you control the game you win championships. That requires an EFFECTIVE running game!

Alabama has a better head coach than we do.
Alabama is on NCAA PROBATION in Football, is the only SEC team to be on PROBATION, and has been on PROBATION the most of all SEC teams since the current alignment of The SEC in 1990.
We would not have to tackle the opposing teams if our Offense did not average 21 fumbles a year for the last 4 years in a row every year, if our offense did not start in a hole averaging the # 96 Most Penalized team in NCAA football every year of the last 4 years and if our Offense did not average 14 interceptions per year every year for the last 4 years in a row.
That is NOT negative. It is a FACT.

There are chatrooms for that type of persuation out there, I’m sure………………Now, I am quite sure you will find my post a goldmine of things you can quote me on, out of context, and continue to play your little game…………………But, I ,for one am damn tired of you using the word “we” as you trash the Bulldogs……..My hope is that you might grow-up, and learn mature discussion. As always, My best Regards, RED

No excuse for this weakness and the length of time it has gone on! To win…you have to tackle…

D Bell ………I would agree 100%……….Did you happen to read what new linebackers coach, Belin had to say about tackling? something like “who’s been coaching tackling around here for the last four or five years ?”……………….So, now we have some new coaches, hope that translates into the BULLDOGS drilling the living hell out of our opponents come the 2010 season ! Regards, DB, RED

Richt’s been at UGA since 2001 and hasn’t come close to a national title. Meyer’s been at Florida since 2005 and has won two, Miles one at lsu and saban one at bama. Why can’t richt recruit and coach well enough to win a title in all that time??????? Dooley at UT will win a title before richt–bank on it.
