Mark Richt took issue with a blog about Logan Gray fielding punts. (Associated Press)
So, first thing when I fire up the computer this morning, there’s an e-mail from my brother Tim saying, “I see in the Athens paper that Mark Richt reads your Blawg, he answered your question about Logan Gray returning punts. …”
And, sure enough, under the headline “Richt takes issue with blogger,” The Athens Banner-Herald reports that after practice Thursday Richt appeared to be criticizing my comments earlier this week about him continuing to use Logan Gray on special teams. I say “appeared,” because he didn’t name which blogger he was disagreeing with, saying only that it was a “media blog,” and I’m not the only one critical of the move (as I noted at the time). But the ABH seemed pretty sure he was talking about me.
Anyway, Richt said: “I usually don’t ever read a blog, but I read a blog about Logan Gray catching punts.” He went on to say he wanted “to try to educate whoever cares that when Logan is back there — I tried to explain it the other day — it’s at a time when our opponent is punting it in. It’s a pooch kick. Our defense — our punt return team — is in punt safe to keep them from faking the punt because their across the 50-yard line.
“All Logan is doing is making a decision whether it should be a fair catch or let the ball hit. The fine gentleman who writes the blog, I don’t think he understood that very much, but I just thought maybe if everybody got educated on that a little bit better, they’d understand why Logan would do that. He was 100 percent last year on making those decisions and never bobbled the ball. I think that’s not a hard thing for him to do and we’re not expecting him to return the punt because those punts don’t get returned. There’s no return set up.”
I thank Richt for saying “fine gentleman” and not “complete tool” or one of the other phrases I’ve had thrown at me here. But I have to point out that, like a master politician, Richt chose to disagree with me on a point I wasn’t making.
I understand completely, and always have, that Gray is in there to either fair catch the ball or let it go and isn’t intended as a returner. And I never questioned his ability to do that.
What I questioned was the wisdom of using one of your quarterbacks for such a job — which not only takes away from his QB preparations (the Georgia coaches noted that two years ago Gray fell behind Joe Cox in practice in part because he was spending time on special teams) but also exposes him to possible injury if an opposing player fails to observe the fair catch signal.
And, secondly, I expressed concern over Richt’s indication that he might continue to use Gray on other special teams, noting I didn’t think Gray looked too sharp in kickoff coverage last year. The coach did not to address that point.
Lastly, I should point out that at times last season Gray was deployed to fair catch the ball when Georgia wasn’t backed up deep in its own territory. So the strategy itself was used inconsistently. And, as the Senator notes in responding to Richt’s comments, on at least a couple of occasions Prince Miller was back there fielding pooch kicks instead of Gray.
As for whether it’s a good thing for everyone in the stadium to know when Gray runs out on the field that Georgia isn’t even thinking of attempting a punt return is a strategy question that can be argued both ways.
Bottom line: As long as Gray is a quarterback, even if he winds up as the backup, there are more reasons for not using him on special teams than there are for doing it.
And, again, thanks for reading, Coach. If you continue to do so, you’ll find that I actually agree with you and support you more often than I don’t.

I am glad Paul Johnson has better things to do with his time than to worry about what a fan blogger (even if on a major newspaper site) thinks about the program. I guarantee that these coaches know more about football in their pinkies than we fans have ever thought we know, so why waste their time addressing it? Just another reason I will take CPJ over CMR any day of the week.

First of all….FIRST! Secondly, you’re right on the money Bill. Ever thought about being a head coach someday? Those are some good observations and ones that head coaches of major universities should already know. I mean, isn’t that why they’re paid $2.5 mill + in salary? To see what we mortal fans with no experience in coaching see?

I highly doubt Richt himself actually read this blog. My guess is that someone in the athletic deptartment came across this one (and some of the others talking about gray and special teams) and brought it up to Richt. Maybe at that point he went and read it, but I just can’t see him having the time to be perusing these blogs. He probably felt the need to address it before it blew up any bigger.

The fact that you get readers is amazing. I wouldn’t complain who is reading your blog. Last time I checked Coach Richt can read whatever he wants…I don’t think that’s part of his contract. There’s a reason you’re the semi-amateur blogger and he is the coach. Your lack of quality of work amazes me as I read your column to see how far you continue to sink the art of journalism.

If you’re not on the sidelines and in practice every day, you cannot even begin to understand what decisions are made on a play-by-play basis. Why argue with one of the best coaches in all of NCAA football? I think he knows quite a bit more about what to do with his team than you do.

FinanceBuzz, thanks for backing up my host, Coach Paul Johnson. I chose to become his waddle, rather than CMR’s because I know he won’t take any bs from a blogger and have it affect him, just like you know that about CPJ. Tech is so lucky to have a coach like my host, because he is a man, not a wishy washy blog-reader like CMR. I know for a fact in the waddle circuit, CMR cannot get a waddle. This comes mostly from CMR being clean-cut, and only real coaches let themselves go, making the perfect situation for a top-notch waddle. Many of you don’t know, but I am sure you do, FinanceBuzz, that I was named Celebrity Waddle of the Year by the Academy of International Waddle Writers.
Thanks for giving such a good reason for people to back my host, FinanceBuzz, you are a true football fan.

My biggest issue is that Gray should be returning punts too, not just fair catching, because I got the impression in 2008 that he is actually good at it. No I wouldn’t have him do it as a starting QB, but if he loses the starting job and somehow remained an official backup QB, I’d be find having him out there because UGA should be able to have an additional capable QB with Murray, Mettenberger, and Mason coming on board. Please play Logan SOMEWHERE, anywhere, before he has graduated.

Logan did do a good job of fielding the ball last year. There is little risk in what he does. Probably less risky than warm ups. However, is it such a good idea to tell the other team that you have no plans of returning the punt?

Bottom line… you were never a coach… assistant coach… player… letterman… manager… trainer… or water girl for the Red and Black. You are not at practice every day and your salary is not dependent on the decisions made on that football field (or is it). Please concede this argument to a hired professional that is arguably the most successful coach the Dawgs have ever had… that’s right, I said it.
I find it embarrassing that you’re even calling out Richt by writing this follow-up. Fact of the matter is that he is going to make decisions that he truly believes are best for the success of his team for the benefit of the seniors and his own job security. With as many turnovers as we had last year (and as few as we had on special teams), is it such a bad idea to concede the job to someone that is sure-handed and confident in his punt receiving capabilities?

So he is telling us that we can’t fully trust our regular return guy. If I didn’t do anything else all year I would teach that #1 Smith how to return punts. Guaranteed 3 scores for season. That will be the first thing they will do with him in the NFL.
Now can we get him to explain why for the first eight years he was convinced that having your kickoff man boot the ball out of the endzone was a really BAD move. Me and 143 NCAA head football coaches are all anxious to see why we are wrong and he is the only coach in history that is right. Then he can explain why we went all the way to California to get a JUCO kicker (only kicked 33% in endzone, most good highschoolers are about 50-65%) that will never set foot on the field because we already had a upcoming sophomore that is one of the top 5 kickers in the nation. All the way to San Diego to flush a scholarship down the drain. Drew Butler should be more than adequate as a backup, he was a fine kicker for the Ridge.
After that see if he can educate us on getting two punts blocked in the same game.
If Mark Richt’s knowledge of special teams was GAS, UGA would not have enough to run an ant’s motorscooter around a BB one revolution.

Richt was trying to be nice. He knows like we all do that Gray is not going to be the QB but can’t say that openly because Gray would get upset. Act like Gray has a chance to be the starting QB by giving him some reps this Spring and then inform him later…say August…that he is second or third team and that he could earn playing time by playing Wide Receiver and Special Teams if Gray would rather do that. Taaaadddddaaaahhhhh! We get Gray playing where we really want him and keep team harmony to boot!! No Way Gray is the starting QB this season. We always hear coaches evaluate high school by looking at game film….We know Gray is not the QB by game film and the fact he could not even beat out Joe Cox!!!

What I have issue with is the fact everyone now knows he won’t return it. The other team can now set a corner to kick to and Logan can’t fool them by running away from the kick. This happened at a game last yr, the team kicked to one corner, Logan ran to the other, and their cover guys downed in the corner it was actually kicked, need to get used to seeing that I guess

Eh, small matters honestly. I’m really not too concerned for Logan getting injured back there. But heck, I’m one of those that thinks the QB’s should get hit in practice just like everyone else. Maybe tell the lineman/linebackers to keep from taking their heads off. If Logan is the best man on the team to field punts in that situation, then that’s fine with me. I’ve always thought it was kind of cool that our QB returns punts. Takes you back to the old days and gives Logan some “man points” for doing it. Adds a certain toughness level to the QB that this dawg fan likes.

This is a non-issue that has gotten way too much traction from both you and the senator, Richt said it depended on HOW THE QB RACE TURNED OUT. Besides that punts from inside the fifty are rarely returned. The coverage guys only have to run thirty yards of so and frequently will get there ahead of the ball. If Logan’s the best man — so be it. There is a huge difference in getting the ball at the 12 and getting the ball at the two. Richt was talking about using Gray in a very specific situation. You can complain about how he used Logan last year but that has nothing to do with how he plans to use him this year.Ii, frankly, am amazed at how many people have gotten their panties in a wad over a pretty innocuous statement.

As Richt said, this is when the other team is across the 50 and pooching it. . . good luck getting any kind of return out of a pooch punt, so the idea of “everyone” in the stadium knowing what’s going on doesn’t do much good anyway.
Secondly, I’m guessing the coaches have a lot more at stake than you or I do in regards to the outcome of the game, so i’m sure the reasons for L Gray being back there outweigh the reasons he shouldn’t be. . . perhaps this year, more options will be available.

Instead, in his usual, graceful way, he responded respecfully.

Hey Finance Buzz….you have got to be a complete moron…did you not read that CMR read about the blog in the Athens paper?….are you that much of a pompous a–hole that you had to make a comment without knowing the facts first? Thats what most Tech fans do…run their mounths for the sake of doing it without ever making a point or stating the facts first. When your football program is so bad that you consistantly go through head coaches like kleenex because nobody at your trade school understands college football then you need to find another football program to follow.Your coach doesn’t even have enough respect for himself that he walks around looking like a fat slob. He’s an arrogant SOB that thinks he’s better than everyone else. He’ll NEVER beat Georgia again in your life time..NEVER. You go ahead and take CPJ….he won’t be there long though….if he was a good football coach don’t you think he’d know how to coach more than a gimmic offense to win a game? What a loser you and the Tech football program are. Just remember…8-1….Georgia runs this state…always have ..always will. Can You Dig It!

Bill, are there any qualifications beyond being a fan, having a blog and a little ability to type, that give you any legitimacy, to suggest why anybody should care what u think about anything relative to game strategy?
Opinion on game strategy, or how players are used, trust me, nobody cares what u think, and I mean NOBODY.
You need to limit your comments to fan behavior, tailgating menus, player personalities, etc, etc. In other words, things of relative unimportance, things that anybody can comment on with no requirement for credibility or legitimacy.

“It was the A.C. Leonard show at South Florida on Saturday and Sunday at the elite 7 on 7 event. He created an early buzz by his performance on Saturday afternoon and by the end of the day on Sunday, he had people hanging around to watch him after their teams had been beat out. He was that good. The 6-foot-2, 230 pound future tight end at UF dominated throughout the event while leading his underdog Pro Impact team to the championship. Bill I commend you 100% for your blawg about Logan Gray and there was nothing in it or your response that dissed CMR or should make any real fan feel ackward! This is a subject that needs to be dicussed because as you stated his implamentation of Logan in punting situations last year was not consistent to his plans for Logan this year. However he stated the plans as if they were consistent. For all the people who blindly think using Logan on punt safe return and other special teams is a good idea because CMR says so. Take a look around the landscape of College Football and see if any other major D-1 programs used this same philosophy. Of course not! This is some idea that CMR has come up with to passifly one of his beloved QB’S. There is no way in hell that you can tell me that this job of Punt safe returner is so complex that only Logan Gray has the mental capacity and physical make up to do it successfully. This is something that should taught to Carlton, Rantavious, Brandon, etc. Actually they probably already know how to do it. It’s not rocket science Mark!!!

I think a lot of you people forgot that Logan begged the coached to play. He wanted to be on the field in ANY capacity where he could possibly help the team. He knew that sitting behind Stafford and Cox was where he was going to be until this year when he gets his shot to compete for the position. Evidently he is a fairly good athlete that can handle the mundane, but critical, task of securing the football on punt returns where field position is in jeopardy. CMR figured out that he was capable and used him. No harm because he wasn’t getting hit because he wasn’t returning the ball. Maybe he uses him this year or not. Big deal if he does. If Mettenberger sobers up maybe use him.

CMR and staff are doing the right thing on short punts. Don’t think they had anyone to trust but Grey and Miller on the long ones. Maybe Carlton Thomas will be a dependable threat when his feet get wet. Can’t have someone who fumbles like B.Smith did a lot last year. A lot of practice time with a defense will give these guys good judgement when deciding to fair catch, let it go or run.

You bring up a good point, and this is what concerns me about Rick, fans have picked up crap like this for several years, i.e not kicking it in the endzone, the crap play calling on defense, players being redshirted when they should be playing (Moreno).
This is why 10 games is possible but the 11 and 12th game against a good team will continue to be a loss until he gets serious about winning like Meyer and Saban.
Hopefully this D coordinator will change that

Logan Grey was on the field returning punts more than just standing on the 10. Lets get real here. What when he’s on the 30 yard line he is going to let it go over his head? Really? Lets no play dumb here. Not all times where “punt safe”. Jeez…

I agree with Coach Richt here.
No risk to Logan Gray just fair catching punts. Taking advantage of Gray’s good judgment. Smart for Richt.
Doesn’t mean Gray’s out of the QB comeptition, I think that’s what Richt was saying there.
Richt wants everyone to think there’s a 3-4 way battles going on for the QB position so he can get more fire out of his QB’s. But I think Murray’s the QB, and I think Murray will stay fired up whether named starter or not, he always does.

Great rebuttal Bill!! Even if the other team is punting from the 50 shouldn’t we put someone back there that they will want to kick away from by kicking it out of bounds or in the end zone? Agree putting Gray back there tells everyone that we are content with what the punting team gives us. I did some punt returning in HS and it just takes some practice to know when to let it go, fair catch it, or when to catch it and take off with it. Not rocket science.

Putting Gray in as PR is telling everyone that you have no intention of returning the ball. Punters on the opposing team must love it when they see Gray coming in to fair catch because they know we aren’t going to attempt the block punt and they know we aren’t going to return it. Hopefully with our new defense we will see more of the opposing team punters this year so bring back Mikey Henderson or Thomas Flowers and the aggressive punt blockers!!

I don’t give a rat’s rear end who fair catches punts on the ten, as long as sombody does. I would use Gray on punt and field goal teams just in case I wanted to fake a kick. It would be nice to have somebody back there that can run and throw some. I like what I am hearing from spring practice, teaching the basics of football. The DBs worked on stripping the ball from behind today and Boykin said, ya’ll won’t believe this, that they are learning to turn and look for the ball in pass defense! Somebody pinch me, I must be dreaming! With Grantham stressing the fundamentals of tackling, like taking the right angle and maintaiming your balence, I swear, if CTG ever mentions tackling the hips, my old ticker may stop! At least I would die happy.

PLEASE READ THIS!!!!!!
Five reasons this is not a good idea by CMR:
1. What if it’s late in the game (say 1:00 minute left) and opposing team wants to pooch kick us. Do you still put Logan out there? I mean in that situation you want to try to return it if all possible to better your feild position. Therefore you should have someone out there that can do both RIGHT?
2.What if an opposing teams player does’nt see Logan put his hand up signaling fair catch. Then you’ve lost the Special Punt Safe Return guy and a back-up QB at the same time.
3.Won’t this mean that you’re actually taking game situation reps from the Full-Time return guy. Therefore not allowing him to get in more rhythm?
4.So CMR is this postion so important that you need to actually split time between two players to get it right?
5.Is it good strategy too telegraph exactly what you’re about to do any situation in the game of football. I think Not!
Lastly people CMR started all this crap not Bill! He did this by even talking about using Logan Gray on punt return and it’s only second day of spring practice for Pete’s sake! These no way Logan could have proven that he’s all world in punt sasfe return in two days of practice. This is simply something CMR is doing to pacify on on his beloved QB’S.

So the worry is that when we put everybody up on the line, protecting from the fake, with no blocking whatsoever, and the whole world knows how those punt situation are handled by everybody, having Logan Gray in there is going to somehow tip our hand that we might not be setting up the big return?
AltamahaDawg

Doc if I may. As I see the 5 answers.
1. It depends on where they are punting from. if its one minute in the game, and they are on say the 50, or our side of the field. Which is worse? They might fake the punt and we never get the ball back, or we might have to settle for 5-10 yrds less? Now if they were backed up they are not going to fake. Go ahead and pooch it please. In that case we set up the return.
2. What if Logan Gray or anybody else gets hurt lifting weights. Or strains his arm throwing 1000 balls a week. What if Boykin gets hurt taking the KO and we lose the KO guy and the starting DB? I say play the best guy for the job. Obviously Gray has shown in practice he is. Can you name a player that got hurt because somebody pelted him on a fair catch? or even returning a punt for real.
3. I would bet they take hundreds if not thousands of punts in practice reps, I doubt that if our main return guy getting only 5 shots at it, and not that 6th, it’s really going to ruin his moves. In fact I would say fatigue late in that game, since he is also a full time position player, would be as much of a concern as that.
4. Why wouldnt a team have 2 guys ready at some skill? especially because its very situational. We have various WR, RB, LB for a certain downs and yardage.
5. The whole world knows what we are going to do when we have 9 guys in the box and they are punting to our 5 yrd line. There is a reason everybody knows what we are going to do. They would be too.

BTW, Richt never said “last year he only was in if the ball was going to the 10″. If I had to guess why he was in there faircatching the ball further up the field on rare occations, the 4 muffed punts that the others lost might be someplace to start.
Clearly he was talking about why he is still in the punt mix, despite being in the QB race, this year. I would be betting that we do not see him in on anything that isn’t exactly the situation he described.

Sometimes, no matter where you look, who you try, or what makes sense, you just might have the right guy in the right place, at the right time; Gray might just be that guy…some teams have an “up” guy and then the regular depth guy…the up guy knows what he is expected to do, he is much more disciplined, has sure hands, and is trusted to make the right decision…this guy isn’t thinking return, he’s thinking secure the ball, and do his job…this is a hard thing to coach, because a most return guys wants to take a chance and take off, which sometimes leads to disastrous results…now why have a QB do this, well it sounds like Gray has the perfect DNA for such a job…coaches sometimes do things that just doesn’t makes sense sometimes, point in fact Murray during his record setting Jr year was also the punter, where any opposing player could take a shot at him, granted he didn’t have to punt too much, but the coach knew that Murray was the one to have back there at crunch time…so, maybe that’s why a QB is the up guy…

He won’t say it, but I will, Complete Tool, it is a fair catch for a punt. Who cares. I really don’t think Logan is going to be playing QB anyway, since he was already moved to wide out and then jumped back into the QB mix. Let’s find something more interesting to write about…other than a fair catch. Boooooooooooor-ring.

Now Bill King has joined all the AJC UGA Haters.
What’s the problem with Logan Gray, Bill?
Elite 11 QB, Rated #5 dual-threat QB, AJ Green says he’s standing out among the 3 QB’s in performance and leadership in practice, so what’s the deal?
Why undercut Coach Richt here?

Don’t think Richt meant it as a compliement there Bill.
I think Richt was peeved because:
A) you thought he’d risk Logan getting hurt on punt returns
B) the implication was that if Richt is looking to use Logan for Special Teams, then the QB race is over. Not true. Logan’s in 1st right now, and might be at the start of the season.

It’s pretty sad when average fans can pick apart what’s wrong with strategy. It’s even more frustrating when the coach either a) won’t admit it and change the strategy or b) can’t recognize that there’s something with the strategy.
Just pathetic.

104 other players on the sideline, and not one is at least as capable as our qb?
