The trashing of campus has ruined tailgating at UGA. (Tom Ritch / Special)
As many fans had feared, the pigs who continued to trash UGA’s North Campus on football Saturdays despite warnings from the school’s administration have pretty much killed off tailgating as it’s traditionally known in that area.
UGA announced new tailgating guidelines today that limit access to the traditional quads on North Campus to four hours before kickoff and ban tents, kegs, generators, televisions, amplified music, grills or cookers of any type, tables larger than 4 feet long and household furniture (folding chairs not included).
If you can imagine tailgating without any of that — spreading a tablecloth on the ground like an old-fashioned picnic — then you’ll be alright. Otherwise, the search will be on for new places to party before a home game.
The tailgaters who abused the campus and those who stood by and watched them have no one to blame but themselves. The tons of trash left on the university grounds and the urinating in inappropriate places (which already had caused the locking of buildings on game days to keep the idiots from using stairwells as toilets) could not be allowed to continue.
In a statement on its Gameday Gameplan Web site, UGA said a committee that was convened to deal with the problem “sought solutions that would maintain the long tradition of tailgating at UGA, but at a level more compatible with the historic buildings and grounds on North Campus. The consistently high traffic and negative impact to this historic area on game days led many in the public to call for a complete ban on tailgating in the area, while others called for increased regulations. The committee took into account the multitude of letters and e-mails from fans and alumni, the wealth of media coverage from the 2009 season and the physical costs involved in protecting this historic and treasured University of Georgia landmark.”
Those planning on moving their parties to the nearest UGA parking lot should think again. In order to accommodate the increased fan traffic that will hit those lots, UGA says, it also is instituting a few changes in parking regulations throughout the campus. Those include: no pull-behind items (trailers, cookers, etc.) on game days, no golf carts or ATVs and no parking on sidewalks (expanded to include Carlton Street). Additionally, the ban on setting up tailgates (tents, tables, etc.) in parking spaces controlled by the athletic association will be re-emphasized.
Congratulations, morons. You’ve ruined it for everyone.

Bravo. Soon, NO DRINKING AND NO TALKING.
If you eliminate tents, TVs, tables, music, generators, and grills, then you have eliminated tailgating. I understand your point that the morons ruined this for everyone, but that seems to presume that Adams and the Administration had no other option than the nuclear option of completely neutering tailgating altogether. Was this really necessary? Is everyone aware that even at its worst, the garbage was collected and gone by class on Monday? Complete overreaction is not leadership.

We have been entering the commercialization of UGA tailgating period for many years now. We have been losing so many of our favorite traditions since the late Sixtes by my memory. I loved it when the seniors dressed up and paraded around the field back before 1970. Wish we could have found a way to have kept our railroad seating section. I loved it when a train actually came through and everyone had to scramble out of the way for a couple of minutes only to return to their original seats once the train had passed. And how about just ten years ago, when the big winnebagos were parked all along Lumpkin and Baxter. Now aren’t they banned to a distant parking lot? Tailgating will never be the same. Oh for the good ofd days. Head full of hair, half the belly size and energy to make the walk to the game.

Geeez what a bunch of spoiled snots. Your butt ain’t so special it can’t sit on the ground on a blanket. And if you’re worried about your clothes–UR doing it wrong. Cook before you leave home, throw it in the cooler–no need for a grill. Carry a radio–they have batteries–there’s your music. Generator? You need a generator to tailgate? Honestly you folks care more about tailgating than the actually game. Just stay home and throw a party in your back yard.

Tailgating died and now has to be regulated because of many things, but the predominant reason is that people no longer just view it as a chance to get together and have a meal together and a couple of drinks. They view it as a chance to get together and eat a little and drink way to much.
There were always drinkers in every era of college sports. Unfortunately what we see today is binge drinking, irresponsible drunks who don’t care if they are smashed beyond belief, and people who are so drunk that they don’t care if they trash someone else’s property.
I’m not opposed to drinking, but if you feel that your gameday experience isn’t complete unless you are completely trashed, you got bigger problems than tailgating regulations!
And to the guy that said, “The trash was gone by Monday”, that’s not the point. Whoever taught you that you could throw crap on someone else’s property and not clean it up???

This can’t be a surprise to anyone! Tailgating has changed as students have become alumni and continue to want to act like students. But most of the problems come from those who view a game as simply a reason/place to get plastered. And most of them could care less about the game, especially since they never have tickets anyway!
We’ve had the same seats since early 70’s, just inside the old G on the south side, now my dad can’t go to the game because everyone thinks that you have to stand up to watch a game. Some are going to say that after paying 1K for a seat, you’ve earned the right to do whatever you want. I say that having a bit of courtesy to the people around you would be even better.
It’s one thing to stand when it’s a crucial play or situation, but is it really necessary to stand on 1st and 10 on your own 20 yard line?

I can’t stand Adams and agree that this was the best solution for HIM only, but it never should have come to this. I guess people just aren’t brought up the way I was. We were taught to take care of ourselves and take responsibility for ourselves. When I used to tailgate in an area without a lot of facilities, we packed trashbags, and brought extras in case someone nearby forgot. If we had a group of 10 or so, we rented our own port a potty. It’s $80 – $100. You split that up amongst the group and it is very reasonable. There never would have been a problem with the volume of garbage if they had just bothered to bag it up to make for an easier pick up and less eyesore. If you’re too lazy or drunk to throw your cups/cans/bottles and other trash in a bag, I’m glad you won’t be able to come back.

Being a tailgater of over 30 years, never before last year did the university do anything about putting out trash bins and bags, or even to make dumpsters accessible. Being a person who picks up after herself, they did not make it easy to dispose of tailgating trash. If I couldn’t put it in a dumpster, I put it in the trunk of the car and disposed of it when I got home. Duh! With a new generation that makes more trash than it knows what to do with, the new “green” generation thinks of itself as privileged and I guess that someone will come along and clean up after them. It has been getting nastier and nastier as the years go along but the university never stepped up and did anything before now. Now, of course, they overreact! Why don’t they try to make it easier for people who now have to drive, park their cars away from their tailgating spot, to dispose of their trash. Yes, you put out the bins and bags, but you didn’t come & empty them when they were full. Every bin on the streets overflowed and when you came back after the game, there was no place to put the new trash. Yes, some were emptied during the game but not all. Why don’t you put some mini dumpsters outside the parking decks so people could throw away those cute trash bags you give out. Empty the cardboard boxes of the beer & soda & water bottles or put out new ones for after the game.
If you take away the fun of tailgating, you are going to be stuck with “virtual” fans and the skybox fans who pull up just before the game (because they have those “special” parking spots in lots which are usually 1/2 full) and then they just whiz away and do not spend any money at the bookstore or in town after the game. So UGA, you can’t have it both ways. Do you want more money — then spend some bucks to pay to have the trash hauled away a couple times during gameday! Your lack of forethought once again bites the fans with the bucks…….

More trash cans won’t make a difference because again, the people who left the mess in the picture above most likely were smashed out of their mind and don’t give a darn about making a mess that someone else has to clean up.
If you get smashed and make a mess and are obnoxious in the process, the last thing you are gonna do is find a trash can to dispose of your trash, or find a bathroom where you can pee. NO, you will think, “Ha ha, I’ll just pee out here.”
I particularly love the people who say, hire more people to clean up. Yes yes, hire more people to clean up your mess.
Wake up!! Life isn’t fair and lots of times you have to clean up your own mess.
Stop accepting that being totally smashed is acceptable behavior and be “responsible drinkers”.

UGA could have handled this a little better than banning such a tradition. Before it got as far as banning tailgating I would have divided the areas into sections and made you sign up for an area giving a credit card number and pay $100 for it’s use . You have to provide your, name, address and phone number and it is your responsibility to police the people in your area. When you get ready to go someone walks through the area with the person responsible and clears it . If you just trash the area and leave without picking up your mess UGA debits your card for $500 to pay for the clean up. If the card is not good then the sheriff comes to your house and arrest your sorry ass for littering and fines you $1000 for acting like a immature irresponsible jerk. There has to be consequences for your actions and that will get rid of the idiots that are there just to show there butts and get drunk and disrespect the integrity of a great college.

Don’t blame the administration; personal accountability doesn’t take a vacation on game day. Tailgating was a privilege not a right. To all of those responsible for our loss of privilege, I hope that you do get angry enough to pull back your money and stay at home. If you have exhibited such disrespect for the UGA campus, you don’t possess the quality of character necessary to be a member of the UGA family. The University doesn’t want you, or need your money! Bill,
What are we talking about here, maybe 6 home games a year? The best of my recollection is that there weren’t enough trash receptacles and certainly not enough (if any) port-o-lets for a crowd the size to fit the expanded stadium. That should be a fixable problem. Seems to me that the football program generates an enormous amount of cash to the university and they should be able to provide sanitary facilities for those that they conunt on to buy tickets. Tailgating is part of the gameday experience and while personal responsibility is not be ignored, the nuclear option is an inhospitable reaction to 6 clean-up days per year.
HDTV is starting to look like a better bet. I can always tailgate at home and I don’t mind cleaning up after the drunks afterward (including self).

Come on now. These aren’t pigs. They’re UGA fans. And if they’re loud, rude, littering, profane drunks, then we’ve got the fans we deserve. They act that way ouside the stadium, because that’s how they act inside the stadium—and we love the hometeam fanatics. If the University is foolish enough to try to enforce civility, it first needs to decide it doesn’t want big time college football and will opt instead for real student/athletes playing in leather helmets. So, give up the outrage. There’s already enough hypocrisy in college football.

That is the first thing that crossed my mind when I saw the pictures of what led to this.
It is funny how so many of you sit on here all year long and beat your chest, trash talk, couch coach, and yada yada freakin yada…
The majority of the fans in Athens are good Dawgs. However, the outright stupid redneck idiots tend to make it miserable.
Do like they do at Augusta. You must have a visable badge with and ID on it. If you get caught being and idiot, your ID number is turned in, you don’t get your badges the next year.
Let some of these idiots loose their season tickets and you will see things straighten up. And before you say, “Yeah, but he got them from someone else.” Well, that person will loose their tickets then. Talk about a vested interest. Let me see, I donate and purchase tickets for 10 years. I have well over 100K invested in seeing the Dawgs. I can’t go to a game due to a family illness. I give my two tickets to a collegue at work and he take his brother. His brother gets drunk, shows his butt, gets in trouble. A plain clothes officer gets his ID # off his badge which must be visible to tailgate. He goes home with nothing more than a headache. I however, loose the ability to purchase tickets anymore.
Put this in place and the BS will stop.

The majority of the problem makers and unruly fans are people who never went to UGA. They have the same problem at most of the larger state schools around the nation. People who didn’t go to the school think they have to prove themselves to those who did. This leads to people bringing their “toys” to the games (Satellite T.V., rolling grills, kegs, furniture and more). If you want to show off how well you have done for yourself (if you graduated form UGA or not), then throw a party at your home. If you have to watch T.V. , stay home…By cooking a whole pig or entertaining 25 people isn’t going to help the team win or lose. The “tailgate” was for those that had to travel great distances to return to support the team, it wasn’t supposed to be a great big weekly party and excuse to drink to excess.

It’s sad when people act so irresponsibly regarding the property
of others. It’d be great if video cameras could be set up, capture

I know that that couldn’t really happen, but it’d be appropriate.

Having been invited by friends to attend a couple of tailgate parties at UGA I can tell you one thing for sure, its not about the game its about the party for a lot people. None of the people that I went with went to UGA or had tickets and neither did I. It is about the same as going to a NASCAR race in Alabama and camping out, its all about getting drunk, watching other drunks act stupid, picking up some strange if your lucky and showing off. You know its getting bad when you have to watch ESPN the next day to find out who won the game or race which I have done several times even though I was there. I’m glad those days are over for me. At least we picked up our trash and tried to leave our area as we found it or better but from I saw a lot of people did not care about anybody or anything. Just party on.

Here is the truth:
1)Some young alumni and current students act like uncouth savages. Solution: larger police presence to crack down on underage drinking and unlawful public behavior.
2)Lack of trash recepticles and frequency of pick up DURING PREGAME TAILGATING AND THE GAME. Solution: School and city should be able to easily rectify this with some money and ingenuity.
3)Slowly eliminate the redneck, UGA unaffiliated season ticket fanbase. A third to half of the “Dawg fans” on game have no affinity for the school or Athens and they are bring shame and embarrassment on the school.
The last game I attended was the Colorado game several years ago with my wife (VT grad) and friends who attended UNC and Vanderbilt. They laughed and laughed the entire day as every Southern- redneck-stereotype was fulfilled that day. The crowd in our immediate vacinity embarrassed me in too many ways to count. I haven’t been back since.

You’re talking 10’s of 1000’s of people now trying to find another place to tailgate (because we all know people are not going to just start showing up for a 4 hour only tailgate) welcome to “Family Friendly” part 2, another spectacular idea that has already been mostly done away with (prior to these new regulations). Just … See Morewhere exactly do they think all these people are going to go??? Every damn lot/deck is already UGA controlled and require a permit. People already park on the exit ramps on the loop, what’s next, tailgating on the side of Hwy 78??? Maybe I’ll just tailgate in my own damn yard, in MONROE!!! This is a tactic and ploy by the Administration to get the Athletic Department to share some of its funds for unrelated budget short falls of the University. The Administration knows they have these funds but the Athletic Department will not agree to share their perceived wealth. The University has to know that something of this magnitude will cause tens of thousands of dollars (if not much more) in reduced donations to both the Athletic Department and the University as a whole. I can assure you the $6,000 plus I contributed in 2009, much of which went to the University itself, will not be given in 2010 if this issue is not properly addressed prior to the first game. I have half a dozen other friends that feel the same way. (They also contribute a lot more than I do each year) Hopefully all parties involved will see the big picture of things and find a way to work all this out as the complete ban as now proposed is only going to hurt the University in the long run. I, for one, remain confident that the cooler heads will prevail before September of 2010. Go Dawgs.

Methinks personal responsibility was MIA after their third beer.

Nobody is saying you can’t tailgate. You can bring a prepared meal, eat, socialize like civilized people and leave the area clean. You just can’t behave like a bunch of hillbillies anymore. People are sick of hillbillies.
I'm sure somebody sells garbage bags with the UGA logo on them

Why do you need trash cans? What’s wrong with bringing your own trash bags, bagging your own trash, and then putting it in your trunk to throw away when you get home? I would have thought that UGA fans were smarter than this – now we know they’re just a bunch of slobs.

I was disgusted after last year. I love tailgating. However, what the idiots did last year was insane. Ga fans have only themselves to blame. We always have a bag of contractor bags packed in our tailgating gear and have never left a item. I offered bags to people who said they did not need them, but left their trash in one big pile. Morons, this time it fits. Congrats, at least I do not need to carry the smoker or fryers any more.

Dog fans are a bunch of blinder wearing morons! That’s a fact! That is also why you are such a joke in the world of college football. UGA hasn’t sniffed a nat championship in 25 years. What makes you think you are relevant at all? What makes you think that every year is “the year the dogs win it all”? What is wrong with you? Wake up!!

This move was already planned before any problems were encountered. Our athletic dept has become one of the most profitable with the fewest championships earned. We (the fans who actually attend the games) have to endure an insane amount of evening kickoffs and increased costs. Season ticket holders are being soaked for more cash than ever before. As was stated in another post on here, the “good old days” are gone and until the fans hit back by withholding funds and not attending games this fan abuse by the Pres and AD will only continue. and even get worse.

Lighten up Frances. The underlying issue here is money and the fact that a cleaning crew charges alot for that kind of mess. With that said, it is a shame the garabage was left but I don’t recall seeing more than 3-4 of those cardboard trash cans. They also shut the library down where people could use the restroom. Poor planning and drinking with no portal potties is a recipe for disaster.

Yawn. You were correct. My mistake for trying to get that post out and get out of here to the lake house for the weekend.
I am getting on up in age. I have given more than my share to the Dawgs over the years. I think that I will watch them on TV from now on. I will let people like yourself go up there and fight it.
Oh yeah. I will keep my 6 Masters badges however.

Throwing trash on the ground is just what Georgians do. Georgians love all forms of garbage. Come into the state from any interstate and the first thing you notice is garbage everywhere.

Typical bandwagon Ga fan base, they finally beat Tenn after a nine year rout only too destroy their own stadium and shrubs oops those beloved hedges, thug dance in the endzone for beating FLA once in 20 yrs, wearing all black uniforms only to get schlaaaaked again, now they cant even pick up after themselves at home games that now will prohibit tailgating. Course then again shouldnt expect too much from a bunch of bandwagon ga fans. They should be use to picking up trash that is the major of choice at UGA isint it. Embarrasment to the state ,The univ, and the conference.

Got some bad news for you bafoons blaming the the trailer park trash for doing this. I spoke with a family friend who graduated from UGA two years ago. He stated this was where mostly STUDENTS gathered. He sais it was the place for students to be seen before a game! Thanks to Adams who apperently can’t control the sorry hoodlums under his watch. Also thanks to the worthless, scum parents who raised their trashy spoiled brats to act like the idots they are!!!

How sad that your lives are so impacted by all this. If you weren’t drunk, didn’t leave a garbage dump when you left, and use other peoples property as bathrooms you would probably still have
the tailgating perk. NOBODY likes a loud obnoxious drunk. If you could see a video of yourselves after a day of tailgating (drinking) you wouldn’t believe it was really you. You have my sympathy, not for the lack of tailgating, but for the sad lives you lead. Is is possible there really is life without alcohol and tailgating? You better believe it. Take your ticket, sit in the stands, and for once react to the game sober. It’s great!

A large percentage of tailgaters don’t have tickets. First step: Require tickets to be checked before entering into any of the tailgate areas. Provide adequate dumpsters, Port-o-lets, and trash cans. Re-assess. Fine-tune policy.

We’ve rented space to tailgate at in Tuscaloosa for years now and it is a common practice. It allows us to know we’ll have a spot every home weekend, and also makes us responsible for maintaining / policing the space. My sons are scouts and we try to follow their “leave no trace” philosophy. Plus, we tailgate next to a church and don’t want kids having to step around trash trying to get to Sunday School the next morning. This sounds like a concept who’s time is well overdue in Athens.

I haven’t been to a game yet, but if this is how it has been lately I don’t think I would have enjoyed it. I’m for enforcing no littering, but prohibiting grills and tents is going too far. Folks who are seasoned campers know about the etiquette about leaving your area in better condition than you found it.

Thank you for ruining the fun…..idiots. While some fellow alumni and students defend and enjoy the tailgating madness, the filth and urine that is left behind makes us all look like low-class, third world, hill billies….I commend the people that establish the new rule. I to the person that said,”We will see how long this lasts, once donors start pulling money back”…….you and any donor that gets mad about this is also low-class. Remember money does not equal class.
