North Campus pigs have ruined tailgating at UGA

The trashing of campus has ruined tailgating at UGA. (Tom Ritch / Special)

As many fans had feared, the pigs who continued to trash UGA’s North Campus on football Saturdays despite warnings from the school’s administration have pretty much killed off tailgating as it’s traditionally known in that area.

UGA announced new tailgating guidelines today that limit access to the traditional quads on North Campus to four hours before kickoff and ban tents, kegs, generators, televisions, amplified music, grills or cookers of any type, tables larger than 4 feet long and household furniture (folding chairs not included).

If you can imagine tailgating without any of that — spreading a tablecloth on the ground like an old-fashioned picnic — then you’ll be alright. Otherwise, the search will be on for new places to party before a home game.

The tailgaters who abused the campus and those who stood by and watched them have no one to blame but themselves. The tons of trash left on the university grounds and the urinating in inappropriate places (which already had caused the locking of buildings on game days to keep the idiots from using stairwells as toilets) could not be allowed to continue.

In a statement on its Gameday Gameplan Web site, UGA said a committee that was convened to deal with the problem “sought solutions that would maintain the long tradition of tailgating at UGA, but at a level more compatible with the historic buildings and grounds on North Campus. The consistently high traffic and negative impact to this historic area on game days led many in the public to call for a complete ban on tailgating in the area, while others called for increased regulations. The committee took into account the multitude of letters and e-mails from fans and alumni, the wealth of media coverage from the 2009 season and the physical costs involved in protecting this historic and treasured University of Georgia landmark.”

Those planning on moving their parties to the nearest UGA parking lot should think again. In order to accommodate the increased fan traffic that will hit those lots, UGA says, it also is instituting a few changes in parking regulations throughout the campus. Those include: no pull-behind items (trailers, cookers, etc.) on game days, no golf carts or ATVs and no parking on sidewalks (expanded to include Carlton Street). Additionally, the ban on setting up tailgates (tents, tables, etc.) in parking spaces controlled by the athletic association will be re-emphasized.

Congratulations, morons. You’ve ruined it for everyone.

Why do you need trash cans? What’s wrong with bringing your own trash bags, bagging your own trash, and then putting it in your trunk to throw away when you get home? I would have thought that UGA fans were smarter than this – now we know they’re just a bunch of slobs.

I was disgusted after last year. I love tailgating. However, what the idiots did last year was insane. Ga fans have only themselves to blame. We always have a bag of contractor bags packed in our tailgating gear and have never left a item. I offered bags to people who said they did not need them, but left their trash in one big pile. Morons, this time it fits. Congrats, at least I do not need to carry the smoker or fryers any more.

Dog fans are a bunch of blinder wearing morons! That’s a fact! That is also why you are such a joke in the world of college football. UGA hasn’t sniffed a nat championship in 25 years. What makes you think you are relevant at all? What makes you think that every year is “the year the dogs win it all”? What is wrong with you? Wake up!!

This move was already planned before any problems were encountered. Our athletic dept has become one of the most profitable with the fewest championships earned. We (the fans who actually attend the games) have to endure an insane amount of evening kickoffs and increased costs. Season ticket holders are being soaked for more cash than ever before. As was stated in another post on here, the “good old days” are gone and until the fans hit back by withholding funds and not attending games this fan abuse by the Pres and AD will only continue. and even get worse.

Lighten up Frances. The underlying issue here is money and the fact that a cleaning crew charges alot for that kind of mess. With that said, it is a shame the garabage was left but I don’t recall seeing more than 3-4 of those cardboard trash cans. They also shut the library down where people could use the restroom. Poor planning and drinking with no portal potties is a recipe for disaster.

Yawn. You were correct. My mistake for trying to get that post out and get out of here to the lake house for the weekend.

I am getting on up in age. I have given more than my share to the Dawgs over the years. I think that I will watch them on TV from now on. I will let people like yourself go up there and fight it.

Oh yeah. I will keep my 6 Masters badges however.

Throwing trash on the ground is just what Georgians do. Georgians love all forms of garbage. Come into the state from any interstate and the first thing you notice is garbage everywhere.

Adams and Dooley have done their part in driving fans away from UGA and football. I think he should get an executive bonus say….5 million dollars. That way he can keep his area pristine.

Typical bandwagon Ga fan base, they finally beat Tenn after a nine year rout only too destroy their own stadium and shrubs oops those beloved hedges, thug dance in the endzone for beating FLA once in 20 yrs, wearing all black uniforms only to get schlaaaaked again, now they cant even pick up after themselves at home games that now will prohibit tailgating. Course then again shouldnt expect too much from a bunch of bandwagon ga fans. They should be use to picking up trash that is the major of choice at UGA isint it. Embarrasment to the state ,The univ, and the conference.

Look on the bright side, 5 % of ticket sales is going toward trash cleanup instead of education, wow UGA has it going on. Keep urinating in athens it all stinks.

Got some bad news for you bafoons blaming the the trailer park trash for doing this. I spoke with a family friend who graduated from UGA two years ago. He stated this was where mostly STUDENTS gathered. He sais it was the place for students to be seen before a game! Thanks to Adams who apperently can’t control the sorry hoodlums under his watch. Also thanks to the worthless, scum parents who raised their trashy spoiled brats to act like the idots they are!!!

How sad that your lives are so impacted by all this. If you weren’t drunk, didn’t leave a garbage dump when you left, and use other peoples property as bathrooms you would probably still have
the tailgating perk. NOBODY likes a loud obnoxious drunk. If you could see a video of yourselves after a day of tailgating (drinking) you wouldn’t believe it was really you. You have my sympathy, not for the lack of tailgating, but for the sad lives you lead. Is is possible there really is life without alcohol and tailgating? You better believe it. Take your ticket, sit in the stands, and for once react to the game sober. It’s great!

A large percentage of tailgaters don’t have tickets. First step: Require tickets to be checked before entering into any of the tailgate areas. Provide adequate dumpsters, Port-o-lets, and trash cans. Re-assess. Fine-tune policy.

We’ve rented space to tailgate at in Tuscaloosa for years now and it is a common practice. It allows us to know we’ll have a spot every home weekend, and also makes us responsible for maintaining / policing the space. My sons are scouts and we try to follow their “leave no trace” philosophy. Plus, we tailgate next to a church and don’t want kids having to step around trash trying to get to Sunday School the next morning. This sounds like a concept who’s time is well overdue in Athens.

I haven’t been to a game yet, but if this is how it has been lately I don’t think I would have enjoyed it. I’m for enforcing no littering, but prohibiting grills and tents is going too far. Folks who are seasoned campers know about the etiquette about leaving your area in better condition than you found it.

Thank you for ruining the fun…..idiots. While some fellow alumni and students defend and enjoy the tailgating madness, the filth and urine that is left behind makes us all look like low-class, third world, hill billies….I commend the people that establish the new rule. I to the person that said,”We will see how long this lasts, once donors start pulling money back”…….you and any donor that gets mad about this is also low-class. Remember money does not equal class.

At Alabama, this would never happen. Bama fans respect the university and leave little or no trash after tailgating.

They ruined tailgating for a lot of us who had spots they shared for decades taken away to charge more $ years back. I gave up my tickets; much better to get scalped for the few decent games a year than to put up with this BS..

I hope Adams takes the NCAA (or any) job, he will always be jerk – I would love to see him go.
