Who should Dogs play at Georgia Dome?

Damon Evans thinks Mark Richt would be on board for a Kickoff Classic. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Damon Evans thinks Mark Richt would be on board for a Kickoff Classic. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

As UGA beat reporter Tim Tucker notes, athletics director Damon Evans talked on this week’s “Bulldog Hotline” radio show about wanting at some point for the Dogs to open a football season in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Classic at Atlanta’s Georgia Dome. “It’s something I’m definitely interested in,” Evans said, adding that coach Mark Richt, who sometimes chafes at some of Evans’ scheduling, “has some interest in it as well.”

He recognizes that schools like Alabama that have played in the classic get a recruiting edge out of an Atlanta appearance and the uncontested prime-time TV spot.

UGA and Georgia Tech turned down a chance to move next year’s in-state rivalry game to the Kickoff Classic, so unless the Dogs were to dump their scheduled 2011 opener in Athens against Louisville — highly unlikely since giving up a home game would cost UGA money and alumni good will — it’s going to be a while before this comes to pass. Evans said it’s a matter of “trying to get it to fit the schedule.”

As long as Georgia participating in the Kickoff Classic takes the place of a road game and doesn’t cut back the number of home games in Athens, I’m all for it.

As for who the Dogs should play, well, the Kickoff Classic is set up as an SEC vs. ACC showcase, so that limits the field. LSU is playing North Carolina in this year’s game and Tennessee and North Carolina State are set for 2012, but I can’t see the Bulldog Nation getting too excited about playing either of them. Same goes for Boston College, Wake Forest, Maryland or Duke. And Virginia we’ve seen way too many times in bowl games.

No, it would have to be Clemson, Miami or Florida State to make this game anything special to the faithful in red and black. And I believe there’s not much question about which of those teams UGA fans most would like to see the Dogs play: Clemson, a longtime rival that used to occupy a regular spot on the schedule every year.

Georgia vs. Clem & Son in the Dome would be a great way to open any season — again, as long as it wasn’t in place of a home game in Athens.

Do you agree? Would you rather see the Dogs take on the Canes or Noles? Or would you rather see UGA continue to use that schedule spot to visit places like Arizona or Colorado?

SPEAKING OF RIVALS …

Georgia’s injury-plagued Diamond Dogs limp into Russ Chandler Stadium tonight to play the No. 3-ranked Yellow Jackets, who should be a heavy favorite. But then again, this series has been kind of crazy that way, with the Dogs frequently upsetting more highly touted Tech teams. If you have CSS, they’ll be televising the game at 7 p.m.

Go Dogs!

As noted on the ‘other’ blog on this…my vote is for Southern Cal – as soon as possible before they fire the little twerp. Tell me, is playing in a ‘Kickoff Game’ treated the same by the NCAA as a ‘Bowl Game’? Cause if it is, we’d better hurry before those guys get ‘probated’ and banned.

This article is misleading a little…Georgia Tech did not turn down playing UGA in the Dome. Tech was hoping to play UGA in the Dome but then revert back to a home and home series the following year. There was nothing in this proposal that benefitted UGA so we turned it down. Tech is trying to find a way to balance their schedule…right now they have Clemson, Virginia Tech, UNC and UGA all on the road next season and all home the following season. Tech was trying to move UGA to the alternate year to help sell season tickets for the odd years that currently only have Miami to draw up interest.

Actually, Bo, a mid-pack SEC team against a mid-pack ACC team wouldn’t be fair. You’d need a mid-level SEC team against the ACC champion …. oh wait, that wouldn’t be fair either.

Clempson should be the opponent.

They’re a respectable ACC team and an old rival from back in the day. Clempson is trying to come back into Georgia for recruiting ….like they did back when they were good every year – back then, their best players usually came from Georgia.

Let’s bring them to the Dome and whup that ass so the recruits will know who would be the better school to attend.

Stay out of the Dome, we need more home games. We have already given up a great home game every other year to go play Fla. in Jacksonville. That is enough. If we schedule Clemson, lets have a two game series and alternate between Sanford Stadium and Clemson’s stadium. This adds a home game against an old rival. I believe an even better two game series would be Ga. vs FSU and alternate between Tallahassee and Athens. The Seminoles are gaining an upper hand on recruiting against UGA, especially in football rich South Georgia, and the Dawgs need to challenge and beat the Noles. It also gives South Georgia Dawgs a chance to attend a close by game in Tallahassee.

UGA should play Miami since the two schools rarely ever play each other. Mark Richt also has ties to the “U”. If the game is played a few years down the road Miami will once again be dominating the college football landscape and teams from the SEC will not have any bragging rights. Miami is one of the few schools that will also play anybody at any location.

We don’t need to play Clemson. I care much more about the future than the past and why would we play Clemson when we can play Florida State who is stealing all of our south Georgia recruits. I mean this game is all about getting better recruits right? Last time I checked Clemson wasn’t taking any of our recruits like Florida State is. Does Greg Reid ring a bell? Or Telvin Smith? If we can beat Florida State then maybe those recruits would reconsider and we would get more than 1 out of the top 10 recruits in the state like we did this last recruiting season. We need players not tradition!!!

Miami or FSU. Bring USC from the west coast and really change it up. As for Clemson we will get to see them coming up again in a few years. Why add another game? I am all for tradition and rivalries but when the opportunity presents itself to play other big time schools you might as well jump on it. The U and FSU haven’t been all that lately but I am sure they will be back up in the top 15 by the time a game would be scheduled.

I definitely think FSU should be the choice. South Georgia needs to be UGA territory–not Florida State. Plus, FSU has a great fanbase in Atlanta that would make it an exciting game. From a national standpoint, having Georgia play the Kickoff Clasic would be a bust. The television ratings would be way down from past years. Georgia does not sell like the top tier programs in the SEC. Chick-fil-a and CBS would not invite them back after the numbers fall.

On the other hand, it is probably the only way they will ever get to see the inside of a dome under Richt, so they should jump at the chance.

FSU is coming full circle – while UGA has lost momentum.

Not really too much between these programs right now – except that we have excitement about our program now that KING BOBBY has been de-throwned and our recruiting and staff are excellent.

UGA has fallen – like FSU did – but FSU has new blood. UGA will never win another SEC title in Richt’s tenure. UGA will be competitive- but Richt lost the Momentum – and went CEO on you.

Funny how coaches evolve from HANDS ON – making it Rich – to “CEO” and lose their momentum.

UGA has been a prime example of not performing as well as the recruiting polls portray. Thank God Willie is gone! Now we can actually stop somebody and utilize our talented recruits with a defensive scheme. I too would love to play FSU at the Dome (or wherever really). A better questions is…. why in the heck would the Chick-fil-a Kick Off Classic want ugag? Don’t they usually try to find teams with more national presence? Who cares what ugag wants or who they want to play?

Ugag needs to become a winning team and go to some worthy bowl (certainly not Shreveport) before they mention a pre-season game!

Neutral opinion on who Georgia should play in a Dome season opening classic.

Fan bases of both Clemson and UGA would probably like to see that game as would I. I’ve seen some great games between the 2 growing up and it used to be a classic rivalry.

FSU-UGA would be good since I can only remember that game being played once and it kinda sucked because FSU was playing with a wide receiver playing qb. Then again it didn’t suck for the dog fans of course since they romped. Both schools also recruit the south Georgia area so it would be an interesting battle for recruiting bragging rights.

Miami- This would be the most intriguing game since I don’t think they’ve ever played. Not that I can remember anyhow. Plus both would get some recruiting exposure in the other program’s backyard.

Any which way they go all 3 would be great matchups that everyone would like to see.

Clemson, Miami or FSU make have the most appeal. Who doesn’t love a cup cake game from the ACC? I can hear every one now if we take that game of how easy our schedule is….

With that said we would have much more to loose than gain even when we beat any of those teams badly. They will get to creep into our back yard for recruiting. I say let others have the cup cake game! Go DAWGS!

I’d vote for BC, Maryland or Duke (schools too far away, or too disinterested in football, to buy tickets) – imagine 70,000+ in the GEORGIA Dome wearing the Red and Black – almost as good as Athens, without the heat and humidity of late August! The next year, Tech can play South Carolina, Auburn, or Tennessee – that way they could make some $$$, escape the heat, and only have to travel a mile to get home after getting their buzzy buns busted!

Bo, I’m sort of wary about UNC is building in Chapel Hill. I don’t them to get the exposure of playing in the Dome. UNC is already one those schools that has a national following due to their bb program, as well as their academic prowess. Under Mack Brown, they were “hot”, and it looks like Butch is taking them there again. A lot of people who compete w/UNC are also wary of this. UNC was considered one of the top ten programs when Brown was there. They are simply one of schools where the kids want to go, including athletes. UVa is another one. If they get a good coach, they too will threaten the national stage.

You ugag fans are so very arrogant. Get it through your small heads: ND, USC, Texas, etc. are out of your league – on a different level – on a higher plain. How else can this be explained?

Do you think that Michigan is drooling to play Furman? Um, no. And, no one is drooling to play you.

No one with any pride wants to play you in any preseason game. You offer nothing to anyone in the top 50. You are not conference champs. You are not even runner up. You didn’t finish in top 20 or top 25 or top 30.

Your sorry players cannot keep themselves out of trouble. Your players cannot even keep clear of the law. MarkR cannot handle the players off or on the field.

It would be entertaining if it wasn’t so very sad how you guys on this blog really think any top team would CONSIDER playing you.

And then, all you ever say is “we beat Tech.”

James Brown

March 16th, 2010

Reality, I think the phrase you meant to use was “higher plane,” as in a level of development, not a geographical area.
As to your assertion: If you wanted to say that UGA was not on the elite level of Texas or USC, it would be hard to argue the point, having not won a national championship as they have. But your inclusion of Notre Dame in that list is completely baffling. When was the last time ND was relevant? The last time I checked the high-water mark for their program over the last decade was a home loss, when they “almost” beat USC. Have they won a big game since 1993?
Teams want to play in the Kickoff game. Why? National TV exposure and recruiting in Georgia, especially the Atlanta area, one of the biggest hotbeds in the nation. No, Texas and USC don’t necessarily need to recruit here. But if Georgia got a spot in the game, there is no reason to believe that we couldn’t get a national powerhouse type of team to come play us. ESPECIALLY if they perceived us as weak and being an easy win. If you read the blog, the whole point of the article was “Who would you LIKE to see play,” not “who actually would play?” But I wouldn’t expect you to realize the difference between the two since you’re such a loser that you have to read a Georgia fan-blog and talk trash to get your jollies. Guess you don’t have your own team to root for that’s worth a crap. How sad for you.

@James Brown – If Texas wanted any recruit in the State of GA, they would get them and ugag won’t stand in their way. But, it seems that your delusion isn’t solely limited to ugag football, but it also extends to GA prep players. Texas prep players are regularly more highly regarded than GA prep players.

Back to the topic at hand. Ugag basically does need to simply abandon all men’s sports. Football, basketball, and baseball are all without hope and just an embarrassment to the university and to the State. Just turn over the entire sports department to the women. The women at ugag seem to have their act together – basketball, gymnastics, etc.

On the topic at hand, Miami would be a great option. UGA leads that series 7-4-1 despite all 12 games being played at Miami. That’s Richt’s alma mater. And would be our first meeting since 1966.

Outside of that, I’d like for Michigan or USC to come to Atlanta. We’ve played the Trojans in L.A. 3 times and the Wolverines in Ann Arbor twice. In fact, UGA is the only SEC school to have beaten Michigan in the Big House. Would be nice to see those teams come here.
