Who should Dogs play at Georgia Dome?

As UGA beat reporter Tim Tucker notes, athletics director Damon Evans talked on this week’s “Bulldog Hotline” radio show about wanting at some point for the Dogs to open a football season in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Classic at Atlanta’s Georgia Dome. “It’s something I’m definitely interested in,” Evans said, adding that coach Mark Richt, who sometimes chafes at some of Evans’ scheduling, “has some interest in it as well.”

He recognizes that schools like Alabama that have played in the classic get a recruiting edge out of an Atlanta appearance and the uncontested prime-time TV spot.

UGA and Georgia Tech turned down a chance to move next year’s in-state rivalry game to the Kickoff Classic, so unless the Dogs were to dump their scheduled 2011 opener in Athens against Louisville — highly unlikely since giving up a home game would cost UGA money and alumni good will — it’s going to be a while before this comes to pass. Evans said it’s a matter of “trying to get it to fit the schedule.”

As long as Georgia participating in the Kickoff Classic takes the place of a road game and doesn’t cut back the number of home games in Athens, I’m all for it.

As for who the Dogs should play, well, the Kickoff Classic is set up as an SEC vs. ACC showcase, so that limits the field. LSU is playing North Carolina in this year’s game and Tennessee and North Carolina State are set for 2012, but I can’t see the Bulldog Nation getting too excited about playing either of them. Same goes for Boston College, Wake Forest, Maryland or Duke. And Virginia we’ve seen way too many times in bowl games.

No, it would have to be Clemson, Miami or Florida State to make this game anything special to the faithful in red and black. And I believe there’s not much question about which of those teams UGA fans most would like to see the Dogs play: Clemson, a longtime rival that used to occupy a regular spot on the schedule every year.

Georgia vs. Clem & Son in the Dome would be a great way to open any season — again, as long as it wasn’t in place of a home game in Athens.

Do you agree? Would you rather see the Dogs take on the Canes or Noles? Or would you rather see UGA continue to use that schedule spot to visit places like Arizona or Colorado?

SPEAKING OF RIVALS …

Georgia’s injury-plagued Diamond Dogs limp into Russ Chandler Stadium tonight to play the No. 3-ranked Yellow Jackets, who should be a heavy favorite. But then again, this series has been kind of crazy that way, with the Dogs frequently upsetting more highly touted Tech teams. If you have CSS, they’ll be televising the game at 7 p.m.

Go Dogs!

Sorry the baseball hasn’t worked out for you. I was kind of hoping that it would be an entire season where UGAg beat Tech, but Tech had higher aspirations beyond just beating UGA. Guess I’ll just have to settle for Tech aspiring to higher in football and basketball than UGAg and taking a chance that we may have to settle for both in baseball.

Georgia X Miami makes the most sense, all things considered. Damon, get on the horn, my man.

Rival wise Clemson would be the best choice but recruiting wise FSU.

FSU and Miami are the obvious choices! Why would we want to play Clemson in the Dome? Don’t get me wrong, I think we should play them every year. But they are just up the street, and why take away the atmosphere at Death Valley and Between the Hedges?

@James Brown – If Texas wanted any recruit in the State of GA, they would get them and ugag won’t stand in their way. But, it seems that your delusion isn’t solely limited to ugag football, but it also extends to GA prep players. Texas prep players are regularly more highly regarded than GA prep players.

Back to the topic at hand. Ugag basically does need to simply abandon all men’s sports. Football, basketball, and baseball are all without hope and just an embarrassment to the university and to the State. Just turn over the entire sports department to the women. The women at ugag seem to have their act together – basketball, gymnastics, etc.

@KJ – Anyone with any sense would agree that losing in the Orange Bowl is much preferrable than winning in Shreveport. You guys can keep your Louisana bowl while Tech can keep going to a BCS bowl. Happy?

I’m for playing Clemson about twice a decade, and we’ve got them on the schedule already. Miami would be a good matchup. We haven’t played them since they first rose to prominence, and it would generate a lot of good buzz.

I’m thinking Lowndes or Georgia Southern. Perhaps we can try and gain back some ground in our own state and stop worrying about Florida.

FL Moonpie is an idiot. Nobody in the country can talk bad about UGA’s schedule. We’ve had the toughest schedule in the country the past few seasons. This year’s schedule is more in line with the rest of the country and I’m glad for it. The SEC schedule is tough enough. FSWho doesn’t play anywhere near the schedule UGA does.

For all that want USC, it’s brutal to travel that far for a regular season game. I would LOVE to play them in a bowl though. We should have been given the chance in 07′ but they didn’t want any of us that year. That’s why they took a 4 loss Illinois team and called it Big X/Pac X “tradition”. The Rose bowl committee should be relieved of duty.

I know why we didn’t play GT in the opener, and it wasn’t because we would have to give up a home game. The real reason we would never play GT in the Chic- Fil- A opener, is all the critisism we would have gotten for playing a “cream puff ” team that we already routinely beat, like 8 of the last 9yrs………Good Greif !

They sure don’t make Alabama, Clemson, and FSU fans like they used to. At least not if those 3 morons are any indication.

On the topic at hand, Miami would be a great option. UGA leads that series 7-4-1 despite all 12 games being played at Miami. That’s Richt’s alma mater. And would be our first meeting since 1966.

Outside of that, I’d like for Michigan or USC to come to Atlanta. We’ve played the Trojans in L.A. 3 times and the Wolverines in Ann Arbor twice. In fact, UGA is the only SEC school to have beaten Michigan in the Big House. Would be nice to see those teams come here.
