Who should Dogs play at Georgia Dome?

Damon Evans thinks Mark Richt would be on board for a Kickoff Classic. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

As UGA beat reporter Tim Tucker notes, athletics director Damon Evans talked on this week’s “Bulldog Hotline” radio show about wanting at some point for the Dogs to open a football season in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Classic at Atlanta’s Georgia Dome. “It’s something I’m definitely interested in,” Evans said, adding that coach Mark Richt, who sometimes chafes at some of Evans’ scheduling, “has some interest in it as well.”

He recognizes that schools like Alabama that have played in the classic get a recruiting edge out of an Atlanta appearance and the uncontested prime-time TV spot.

UGA and Georgia Tech turned down a chance to move next year’s in-state rivalry game to the Kickoff Classic, so unless the Dogs were to dump their scheduled 2011 opener in Athens against Louisville — highly unlikely since giving up a home game would cost UGA money and alumni good will — it’s going to be a while before this comes to pass. Evans said it’s a matter of “trying to get it to fit the schedule.”

As long as Georgia participating in the Kickoff Classic takes the place of a road game and doesn’t cut back the number of home games in Athens, I’m all for it.

As for who the Dogs should play, well, the Kickoff Classic is set up as an SEC vs. ACC showcase, so that limits the field. LSU is playing North Carolina in this year’s game and Tennessee and North Carolina State are set for 2012, but I can’t see the Bulldog Nation getting too excited about playing either of them. Same goes for Boston College, Wake Forest, Maryland or Duke. And Virginia we’ve seen way too many times in bowl games.

No, it would have to be Clemson, Miami or Florida State to make this game anything special to the faithful in red and black. And I believe there’s not much question about which of those teams UGA fans most would like to see the Dogs play: Clemson, a longtime rival that used to occupy a regular spot on the schedule every year.

Georgia vs. Clem & Son in the Dome would be a great way to open any season — again, as long as it wasn’t in place of a home game in Athens.

Do you agree? Would you rather see the Dogs take on the Canes or Noles? Or would you rather see UGA continue to use that schedule spot to visit places like Arizona or Colorado?

SPEAKING OF RIVALS …

Georgia’s injury-plagued Diamond Dogs limp into Russ Chandler Stadium tonight to play the No. 3-ranked Yellow Jackets, who should be a heavy favorite. But then again, this series has been kind of crazy that way, with the Dogs frequently upsetting more highly touted Tech teams. If you have CSS, they’ll be televising the game at 7 p.m.

Go Dogs!

A better questions is…. why in the heck would the Chick-fil-a Kick Off Classic want ugag? Don’t they usually try to find teams with more national presence? Who cares what ugag wants or who they want to play?

Ugag needs to become a winning team and go to some worthy bowl (certainly not Shreveport) before they mention a pre-season game!

I wouldn’t bragg too much “Fish” about beating that ACC champion by what 30-24. Seems I remember them running cow-trails through your defense the year before and you were pre-season #1….But go ahead and keep scheduling those teams like La Lafayette, Colo St and Utah St if that makes you feel big….But don’t expect the football world to give you any respect for it.

Careful, top notch scheduling by your AD to keep the veil of championship calibre competition in place. Problem is, the veil is so thin, everyone can see through it!!!!

FORGET CLEMPSON – we, Georgia, has nothing to gain except giving Clempson more exposure in the state plus elevating their visibility. Why, or who, insists this has to be SEC v ACC? Why? Hopefully the Atlanta Sports Council might think bigger, for a suggestion…… how about Georgia vs Notre Dame????? The Irish like to recruit the state, it wouldn’t get much bigger than the Dawgs and Irish. Whaddaya think?

Let Tech schedule someone to play in Atlanta. Atlanta isn’t Athens, why would you give any team this advantage. Cripes sake aren’t you the fans who fret about going to Southern Ga.(at least that’s what the rest of Florida thinks of JAX) and play Florida every year at the Gator Bowl. Playing between the hedges is the home-field advantage you want.

Clemson would be my last choice among the three. Miami with a program similar to ours and high profile name would be good in the future. Same with FSU and Richt playing the school that still thinks favorably of him. We should afford the Florida teams the insight to playing our mutual rival later…FU.

id love seein the dawgs play in the kickoff game. Musberger (did i spell that right?) and Herbstreit, ESPN primetime, big name opponent, is there a downside. I agree i would like to see us play Clemson mainly because I would LOVE to see that rivalry revived. although it will never become what it was in the mid-late 80s, it would be a step in the right direction

Why would we want to open with Tech? They can’t even fill up their own stadium, so they’re not likely to drive a mile farther down the road.

Neutral opinion on who Georgia should play in a Dome season opening classic.

Fan bases of both Clemson and UGA would probably like to see that game as would I. I’ve seen some great games between the 2 growing up and it used to be a classic rivalry.

FSU-UGA would be good since I can only remember that game being played once and it kinda sucked because FSU was playing with a wide receiver playing qb. Then again it didn’t suck for the dog fans of course since they romped. Both schools also recruit the south Georgia area so it would be an interesting battle for recruiting bragging rights.

Miami- This would be the most intriguing game since I don’t think they’ve ever played. Not that I can remember anyhow. Plus both would get some recruiting exposure in the other program’s backyard.

Any which way they go all 3 would be great matchups that everyone would like to see.

Clemson, Miami or FSU make have the most appeal. Who doesn’t love a cup cake game from the ACC? I can hear every one now if we take that game of how easy our schedule is….

With that said we would have much more to loose than gain even when we beat any of those teams badly. They will get to creep into our back yard for recruiting. I say let others have the cup cake game! Go DAWGS!

I’d vote for BC, Maryland or Duke (schools too far away, or too disinterested in football, to buy tickets) – imagine 70,000+ in the GEORGIA Dome wearing the Red and Black – almost as good as Athens, without the heat and humidity of late August! The next year, Tech can play South Carolina, Auburn, or Tennessee – that way they could make some $$$, escape the heat, and only have to travel a mile to get home after getting their buzzy buns busted!

dawgs vs clemson 41 – 17 – 4
dawgs vs fsu 6 – 4 – 1
dawgs vs miami 7 – 4 – 1
dawgs vs so cal 3 losses (haven’t played since 1960)
dawgs vs texas 1 – 3 (last game 1984)
dawgs vs ohio st one win
dawgs vs notre dame one win

i do not see where georgia has played oklahoma.

usc and texas would be pretty cool in the georgia dome but fla st or miami make the most sense. clemson…maybe.

8th best program in the country, according to ESPN. Pretty sure that qualifies as having “national presence”. In the words of your boy m, “glad it hurts so bad!”

Would be smarter to play UNC. UNC is going to be better down the road than Clemson, and NC has good football talent. UGa already competing with Clemson for recruits. Would be better to win hearts of N. Carolinian recruits.

Bo, I’m sort of wary about UNC is building in Chapel Hill. I don’t them to get the exposure of playing in the Dome. UNC is already one those schools that has a national following due to their bb program, as well as their academic prowess. Under Mack Brown, they were “hot”, and it looks like Butch is taking them there again. A lot of people who compete w/UNC are also wary of this. UNC was considered one of the top ten programs when Brown was there. They are simply one of schools where the kids want to go, including athletes. UVa is another one. If they get a good coach, they too will threaten the national stage.

You ugag fans are so very arrogant. Get it through your small heads: ND, USC, Texas, etc. are out of your league – on a different level – on a higher plain. How else can this be explained?

Do you think that Michigan is drooling to play Furman? Um, no. And, no one is drooling to play you.

No one with any pride wants to play you in any preseason game. You offer nothing to anyone in the top 50. You are not conference champs. You are not even runner up. You didn’t finish in top 20 or top 25 or top 30.

Your sorry players cannot keep themselves out of trouble. Your players cannot even keep clear of the law. MarkR cannot handle the players off or on the field.

It would be entertaining if it wasn’t so very sad how you guys on this blog really think any top team would CONSIDER playing you.

And then, all you ever say is “we beat Tech.”

Reality, I think the phrase you meant to use was “higher plane,” as in a level of development, not a geographical area.
As to your assertion: If you wanted to say that UGA was not on the elite level of Texas or USC, it would be hard to argue the point, having not won a national championship as they have. But your inclusion of Notre Dame in that list is completely baffling. When was the last time ND was relevant? The last time I checked the high-water mark for their program over the last decade was a home loss, when they “almost” beat USC. Have they won a big game since 1993?
Teams want to play in the Kickoff game. Why? National TV exposure and recruiting in Georgia, especially the Atlanta area, one of the biggest hotbeds in the nation. No, Texas and USC don’t necessarily need to recruit here. But if Georgia got a spot in the game, there is no reason to believe that we couldn’t get a national powerhouse type of team to come play us. ESPECIALLY if they perceived us as weak and being an easy win. If you read the blog, the whole point of the article was “Who would you LIKE to see play,” not “who actually would play?” But I wouldn’t expect you to realize the difference between the two since you’re such a loser that you have to read a Georgia fan-blog and talk trash to get your jollies. Guess you don’t have your own team to root for that’s worth a crap. How sad for you.
