Who should Dogs play at Georgia Dome?

Damon Evans thinks Mark Richt would be on board for a Kickoff Classic. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Damon Evans thinks Mark Richt would be on board for a Kickoff Classic. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

As UGA beat reporter Tim Tucker notes, athletics director Damon Evans talked on this week’s “Bulldog Hotline” radio show about wanting at some point for the Dogs to open a football season in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Classic at Atlanta’s Georgia Dome. “It’s something I’m definitely interested in,” Evans said, adding that coach Mark Richt, who sometimes chafes at some of Evans’ scheduling, “has some interest in it as well.”

He recognizes that schools like Alabama that have played in the classic get a recruiting edge out of an Atlanta appearance and the uncontested prime-time TV spot.

UGA and Georgia Tech turned down a chance to move next year’s in-state rivalry game to the Kickoff Classic, so unless the Dogs were to dump their scheduled 2011 opener in Athens against Louisville — highly unlikely since giving up a home game would cost UGA money and alumni good will — it’s going to be a while before this comes to pass. Evans said it’s a matter of “trying to get it to fit the schedule.”

As long as Georgia participating in the Kickoff Classic takes the place of a road game and doesn’t cut back the number of home games in Athens, I’m all for it.

As for who the Dogs should play, well, the Kickoff Classic is set up as an SEC vs. ACC showcase, so that limits the field. LSU is playing North Carolina in this year’s game and Tennessee and North Carolina State are set for 2012, but I can’t see the Bulldog Nation getting too excited about playing either of them. Same goes for Boston College, Wake Forest, Maryland or Duke. And Virginia we’ve seen way too many times in bowl games.

No, it would have to be Clemson, Miami or Florida State to make this game anything special to the faithful in red and black. And I believe there’s not much question about which of those teams UGA fans most would like to see the Dogs play: Clemson, a longtime rival that used to occupy a regular spot on the schedule every year.

Georgia vs. Clem & Son in the Dome would be a great way to open any season — again, as long as it wasn’t in place of a home game in Athens.

Do you agree? Would you rather see the Dogs take on the Canes or Noles? Or would you rather see UGA continue to use that schedule spot to visit places like Arizona or Colorado?

SPEAKING OF RIVALS …

Georgia’s injury-plagued Diamond Dogs limp into Russ Chandler Stadium tonight to play the No. 3-ranked Yellow Jackets, who should be a heavy favorite. But then again, this series has been kind of crazy that way, with the Dogs frequently upsetting more highly touted Tech teams. If you have CSS, they’ll be televising the game at 7 p.m.

Go Dogs!

From a national standpoint, having Georgia play the Kickoff Clasic would be a bust. The television ratings would be way down from past years. Georgia does not sell like the top tier programs in the SEC. Chick-fil-a and CBS would not invite them back after the numbers fall.

On the other hand, it is probably the only way they will ever get to see the inside of a dome under Richt, so they should jump at the chance.

Maybe Furman or Wofford – so uga won’t be hurt by all the boyz on suspension or haven’t made bail yet for their summer and early fall “study programs”

Dave, I suggest you correct your own grammar. Nothing like a post that corrects someone’s grammar and makes a mistake in doing it.

I think we ought to schedule either Tenn Tech or Georgia State for the dome game..we need to boost our number of wins and can’t take a chance opening with someone like Clemson or even Duke. Dawg fans love these games against cupcakes and would pack the dome to see us run up the score.

Dave, thanks for the spell check. I am sorry I don’t waste my time proof reading my AJC post but thinks for your concern. I actually have a great job that allows me to live in the highlands but thanks for asking. I guess you didn’t take any typing classes at Tech but if you use your pinky to hit the shift key you can add a capital letter at the beginning of your sentences. DB I am not your bo, I don’t swing that way my friend and if you keep flirting with me Dave is going to get jealous!

Thanks DB for the constuctive criticism. I know I can’t match your creative ability to chime in on someone elses pathetic excuse to correct grammar while using the word good to describe action instead of the more appropriate term “well”. I am working on it though and since I have already graduated college I came on here to talk football not grammar to a bunch of Indian Study Abroad, future Al Qaeda, Tech Students.

Wofford, Furman, GSU, FIT, GA Southern,…. Actually, who really cares? UGA needs to just disband all sports for men. Basketball stinks. Football stinks. Isn’t the school embarrassed enough?

Dave, your problem is you think to much. What you should do is focus on your pathetic high school team and why they can’t win a bowl game. I have walked through the arches and I have the diploma, the ring, and the six figure job to prove it. When I start caring about GT’s sissie schedule and start posting on blogs about it I will buy a Samurai Sword and stab myself!

We are scheduled to play a home and home against Clemson in 2013 and 2014 as it stands right now. Since the 2011 and 2012 games have already been set for the Chick Fil A Classic, i’d say its pretty much just a foregone conclusion that either the 2013 or 2014 (or both) Clemson games will be in the Dome. It will probably have to be both because Clemson wont want to give up a home game any more than we will!

Would love to Kick some DOG tail to start the season.

FSU is coming full circle – while UGA has lost momentum.

Not really too much between these programs right now – except that we have excitement about our program now that KING BOBBY has been de-throwned and our recruiting and staff are excellent.

UGA has fallen – like FSU did – but FSU has new blood. UGA will never win another SEC title in Richt’s tenure. UGA will be competitive- but Richt lost the Momentum – and went CEO on you.

Funny how coaches evolve from HANDS ON – making it Rich – to “CEO” and lose their momentum.

Seminoles would KILL UGA – and this would entrench us more with our new terrtiorial right to the recruits we want in Georgia – and you can have our left overs in your own state and mine. Go NOLES!!!

IPTAY4ever

Screw UGA – we need to focus on our own schedule – not give up a home game to play in UGA’s backyard.

Besides that – UGA quite playing us year end and year out after the SEC split – not what Clemson wanted – what UGA wanted.

I say schedule as many home games in the BEST and LOUDEST college football stadium in the country. UGA”S stadium is beautiful – but Death Valley is CLOSE to the field and TRAPS the NOISE. Upgrades make it untouchable.

CLEMSON – betting in football, basketball and baseball. Keep your gymnastics and equestrain team!

Sounds like somebody’s mad because we got their OC and destroyed their team. The only thing that’s been missing at UGA the past few years was a good DC and now we have him. Grantham will have a great year as DC of UGA and put us right back in the spotlight. FSU is recruiting well but we’ll have to see how it plays out on the field. UGA has been a prime example of not performing as well as the recruiting polls portray. Thank God Willie is gone! Now we can actually stop somebody and utilize our talented recruits with a defensive scheme. I too would love to play FSU at the Dome (or wherever really). BTW, that’s funny how you’re already saying that FSU would KILL UGA! Win some games before you start talking too boldly. At least beat our regular whipping boy tech consistently. LOL!!!

yeah….wow we have to get the brand out there. Lets schedule USC and while we are at it, lets replace hoboken state with Texas, Goose Creak with Oklahoma and Ga. Tech with the Dallas Cowboys. That should be a good tune up for the 8 game SEC slate. Boy- our brand will surly help us through that

I see no reason at all to play any game other than the sec championship in the dome. Our home schedule is already weak at best, with the biggest game of the year regretfully in jacksonville. We’ve got the most beautiful set up for college football right here in athens. Our decision making has me baffled and sometimes disgusted (black helmets, gimmicks, no financial commitment to mens basketball).

Seminole has a poin, since CMR has gone CEO the team has struggles especially the offense early in the season. I would not want to play FSU first game of the season with Bobo as OC.

Further if UGA lost it would really hurt recruiting and not just in S. Georgia.

Big XII, Going to Boulder this going for 2-1 aginst the Lil 12. Big XII home of the BCS title game Brides Maid.
