Bulldog Bites: Florida game key to Dogs’ season?

CollegeFootballNews.com looks at the upcoming season for Mark Richt’s Dogs, noting that “there’s speed and athleticism across the board,” some playmakers in A.J. Green, Ben Jones and Justin Houston, and “the schedule isn’t all that bad, with the toughest road game at Auburn and the second toughest at South Carolina.”

georgia helmetExpectations aren’t all that high, CFN says, so the Dogs will be “flying under the radar” and “the rest of the conference isn’t going to be jaw-dropping good and the East is going to be as light as it’s been in years. If Georgia can take advantage of Florida in its transition period (which might only be one year) and can pull off the Cocktail Party win, it might really be just good enough to play in the SEC title game. … The schedule really is favorable enough to have a monster season, but Georgia has to be ready to rock right away with three road games in four weeks at South Carolina, Mississippi State, and Colorado wrapped around a home date with Arkansas.”

On the other hand, there are a lot of question marks about this team on both sides of the ball, CFN says, and “the number one thing to work on is: turnover margin. … The Dawgs weren’t all that bad when it came to giving the ball away, although 28 turnovers are still too many, but the defense didn’t pick up the slack with a pathetic 12 takeaways and a nation-low two recovered fumbles. This year’s team isn’t going to be good enough to not own the turnover game.”

A pretty fair assessment, I’d say.

A FRESH BREES?

Aaron Murray has a role model in Drew Brees. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Talking with ESPN.com, QB Aaron Murray seems to have selected Drew Brees as his role model. “A lot of people compare us because of the whole height thing [Murray is generously listed at 6-foot-1], and I like the way he plays the game,” Murray says. “Drew’s a competitor and does whatever it takes to win. He works harder than anyone. He’s in there preparing at 5 and 6 o’clock in the morning watching film. Everyone doubted him because of his size, and he’s going to work as hard as he can. That’s something I try to do, work hard and put that extra preparation in and hope it translates over to the field.”

COMPARE AND CONTRAST

Cornerback Branden Smith in Bulldogs Blog on how new defensive backs coach Scott Lakatos differs from Willie Martinez: “Coach Lakatos is real different from Coach Martinez … his teaching style is way different. Coach Lakatos, he sits down and shows us how to do things. He is a teacher, really.”

FLAWED DIAMOND DOGS

It’s early days, but so far it doesn’t look like UGA baseball coach David Perno’s every other year pattern of leading his team to the College World Series is likely to hold this season. The Diamond Dogs have lost five straight by a combined score of 62-11, with Kennesaw State’s Owls being the latest to beat up on the Bulldogs, 11-1 Tuesday at Foley Field.

Perno, known for being pretty blunt about his team, isn’t happy. “We’re not a good baseball team right now,” he said after Tuesday’s game. “We’re not showing a lot of fight and this has been the worst week in my tenure. … We’re struggling, and it’s very contagious. I’m very disappointed in the team right now.”

As he told The Red and Black, “the wins and the losses don’t bother me. It’s the lack of competitiveness, the lack of energy, the lack of confidence, the lack of fight, the lack of pride. You name it and we don’t have it.I thought this was going to be a gritty team and I’m kind of lost. I’ve never been as disappointed in a baseball team as I am of this team right now.”

Really? The Fla game could be key to Ga’s season? Wow, it’s only been that way since the beginning of time. Folks, Ga will be fine this year, the conference sched is tough but it always is and always will be. But I like the coaching changes and whoever the QB is will be driving a Ferrari this year, the offense is LOADED. Do not underestimate the impact Kris Durhams return will make

I think Florida can be had this year, even with an above average Georgia team. Hopefully, Murray will have grown up by then and Grantham has the D playing much better than our last two trips to the Gator bowl. Florida is loaded with players AS USUAL, but will they be as good as a team?
Lot’s and lot’s of if’s on that team this year, and any honest gator fan will tell you, it’s going to be interesting post Tebow, Coach Strong, and an unproven guy to tote the ball in the SEC. We have tons of questions ourselves. New QB, whole new D, thin at receiver, although we have one of the best in AJ. Can’t wait.

It gave Florida a 20-13 advantage. There would be no more scoring on the day, as the Georgia offense finished 0-13 in 3rd down conversions and Florida held on for the upset victory.

The loss proved to be the only blemish on Georgia’s record that season. Although they finished 13-1 and went on to win the SEC championship, the defeat at the hands of their hated rival almost certainly cost the Bulldogs a shot to play for a national title. – WikiPedia

As a lifelong Gator Hater, The Ga./Fla. game has always been the most important game for me. However, winning the SEC East is the first goal, not beating the Gators. If we have to beat them to win the East, then It Is time to step up and do It. Watch out for USC this tear too.

Blah Blah Blah…obviously a slow news day.

It’s times like this where I wish we had the Vince Dooley ” I really don’t think we’re going to be very good this year” mentality. I always felt that kept the players grounded left them with something to prove. This “It’s Gonna be our year this year” or “next year is gonna be our year” or the ever so popular ” we have so much talent returning” is getting old.

Keys to 14-0 in 2010

March 10th, 2010

1. I don’t Florida will be the toughest game this year, they’re not good in 2010 with 13 starters and 5 coaches all gone and Charlie Strong and Tebow. Meyer will quit either before Sept or in 2010, he always does over his 24 years within 5 years. Meyer is a gypsy. Florida has never beat Richt, Richt beats Richt with 4-6 turnovers a game 3 out of 4 years. That will change. When UGA wins the TO battle, nobody beats Richt. I think he’s finally realizing that with his new staff.
2. Murray will be great. Colt McCoy said Murray was one of the best players “he’d ever seen”. Murray had over 55 scholarship offers. 5000 yards of offense and 63 td’s in one season, and 2 state championships in toughest division.
3. Good to hear we have some great teachers FINALLY on the coaching staff. Bobo appears to be incapable of transferring his knowledge to his QB’s, especially the int problem. Lakatos and Grantham and Belin are known as great teachers.

2 Keys to 14-0 for UGA in 2010:
1) defensive takeaways–must do what the SAINTS DID–GO FROM WORST TO 1ST IN 1 SEASONS
2) RUN FOR 225 A GAME (UGA is averaging 247 over lst 5 games)

Richt’s record is almost perfect when he does those 2 things.

Everyone in the Natl media agree, UF still the team to beat in the East, Murray will be great only if he is healthy. He missed part of 2 years in High School, and injured last year while not even playing. Lakatos, Belin probably good, Grantham fired as only stint as DC. Lastly, nothing indicates Richt can change, as he has gone 4-4 two out of the last 4 years in the SEC. Richt is coaching last year in SEC.

Being in the very heart of Gator Country, I can tell you that Florida fans are excited about the 2010 season. While there will certainly be transistion and growing pains, the returning and new talent is significant and I just think it was a good time for the “changing of the guard”. Not because we wanted to see Tim go because UF will NEVER be able to repay Tim Tebow for all of the great things he has done for the University. Only because it started to become burdensome and very distracting with all of the attention and focus on one player. That certainly wasn’t Tim’s fault, but I do believe our coaching staff did lean a little too heavy on him at times. Still…2 conference championships and BCS titles…hard to argue with. Unfortunately though, with all of the sky high expectations, last season became such a grind and for some reason 2010 feels like a breath of fresh air.

I think that you can look at the season in three parts…SC is definitely the key game in the first four games and a loss in that game (which i think we win) usually means a bad year. In the middle part of the season, Tennessee is a benchmark game. They have beaten us 3 out of 4 so a victory would mean that we’re heading toward a good season. The last part of the schedule, UF is definitely the game with Auburn second. If we win these games, We are headed to the SEC Championship. GT is one of those game that we cannot lose.

Thuga, you are typical of a program who came in 3rd in the SEC behind UGA and Carolina. When are you going to win a bowl game? UGA, UF, any SEC team is no more dysfunctional (since Tech grads can’t spell) than ACC teams.

Dorsey Hill

March 10th, 2010
3:58 pm

If history tells us anything it is that the outcome of the UGA/UF game is overrated when it comes to conference play. The only three times we played in the SEECG (2002, 2003, & 2005) we lost to UF. The three times we beat Florida in the era of the SEECG (1997, 2004 and 2007) we failed to make the SECCG so there seems to be a lack of correlation between beating UF and winning East titles, although you might find years (1992 is the only one I can think of) where a win vs. UF would have led to a SEECG appearance.

Where losing to UF so routinely has effected us is in the context of a National Championship. Arguably, beating UF in either 2005 or 2002 could have led to appearances in a BCS title game.

The lesson here is last UF’s dominance in the series can continue and we can still win our share of SEC titles. However, the series has to even out somewhat for us to take the next step to the national stage. This year certainly presents that opportunity.

I do think that the 3-4 will be better suited to contain the spread. Corners not having as much run support obligations will diminish the effectiveness of play-action which has consistently burned us vs. UF. Further, the weakness of the 3-4 will be vs. incredibly accurate NFL-type QB’s and a power run game. Since there is little expectation the UF will come with either asset, we should be primed to tuirn the series around.

I have predicted that we will win the East in 2010 and I stick by that. However, its not the games vs. UT, UF and USC that have me concerned. I think we get through those 2-1 at worst. Its Auburn and Arky that I have circled. Not that I think either team will be a great team, but I do think that they will put up points in bunches. If we have an off-day offensively vs. those teams it could be a real challenge. If and this is a big IF, the defense gets that 3-4 down and Murray is as good as I think he is, we could be playing Bama in Atlanta with more than a Sugar Bowl appearence on the line come this December.

termigator

Dorsey Hill, you had me until you said about UF not having an NFL calibre QB. Finally UF will have one that all experts say has Stafford arm strength in Brantley. Buck Belue said that he would have been the 4th best starter in the SEC if he had started last year. You better worry about the road game to KY and your defense which lost 5 starters learning the 3-4.

Typical gay boy, I guess you don’t follow the reptiles close enough to know that they have and early enrollee recruit named Trey Burton who is about 6-3 225 who ran last years high school championship 880 relay team as the short yardage QB, kind of like Leak and Tebow.

You can’t put that dog back in the pen. It’s going to have to say “UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT” before things change. Sure we are going to win a lot of ball games and that fills the stands and makes the program look great but we should be in the top ten every year, no excuses…..yet that’s all I hear is excuses. UGA fans and grads know the truth - UF

As an alumnus of UGA, I know that we need to defeat Florida this year. In doing that, it would mean three wins over the last 6 years or 7 years and frankly, that is better than most teams that have faced Florida 7 years running. We won in 04, 08 and with 2010 as a win, that would be great.

Also, we need to show off the SEC East crown this year with or w.o. the SEC Championship. Come 2011 ………..we need to win the SEC ……………period.

I expect this scenario and anything less in 2010 and 11 would be a huge failure.

It amazes me how many UGA fans think that Aaron Murray is just gonna come in and light up the SEC. Even the great Peyton Manning struggled his first year and as we all know, he never did beat Florida. Brantley also has question marks because this will be his first time with “live bullets”, still he has been in the system for 3 years and has at least proven that he can throw the ball against college defenses. Yet UGA fans are acting like they have an advantage here….???????

I’t good to be optimistic but I’m hearing some of these dawg fans talking 10-2 or even 11-1. Lot of conversation about beating Florida this year. Based on what??? Can’t be a “brand new, never thrown an SEC pass” QB. Got an experienced OL coming back with 2 good RB’s, but take a look at Florida with 4 seniors on the OL and 3 quality backs and tell me there’s an advantage there. Got rid of Willie, so I can understand optimism there with a new DC but normally it takes a year or so to really work in a new scheme and longer sometimes to recruit for it. So what is it based on?? I almost suspect it’s based on not having played a 2010 game yet.

Someone in this thread wrote that Brantley is a “career backup.” Seriously? Brantley backed up one of the best quarterbacks that the SEC has ever produced – and THAT gets held against him? NUTS!

Brantley is going to have an outstanding season, he is a fourth year junior who is well-schooled in the offense, will be playing behind a very good offensive line and will have a defense that is returning a TON of players who have played meaningful minutes. The Gators are in far better shape than some of you are willing to concede.

Brantley will end up being a first round draft pick at quarterback, of that there is little doubt.

Florida is going to be a tough out this season, like always . . .

Florida will not be the team for UGA to beat, everybody will pund Florida this year, Florida has one of the worst defensive staffs in the SEC, not a player, Strong is gone

Best defensive foes for UGA are:
1- Bama
2- LSU
3- South Carolina
4- Tenn

Brantley wasn’t tested:
1) in high school- played 2a division– a joke
2) in practice in college–defense not allowed to hit em
3) Against SEC teams never started a single game
4)Has virtually ZERO experience besides meaningless mop up duty against teams like Charleston Southern

Florida won’t compete with anybody in 2010 with Mr. Untested. And with their incompetant defensive staff and their fumbling running backs.

Florida will of course be THE key game in the season.
I dont’ buy the idea that if we don’t get them this
year if could be another long streak.

CMR made changes that will payoff down the road when
our QB will be more experienced and CTG has an opportunity
to get the type of personel he needs to play the system
that he invisions.

Florida is more of a question than they would be honest
enough to admit, but their psychological advantage cannot be
dismissed . It is without question a key factor in keeping
this series from becoming the rivalry it should be.
But Alabama has shown that even with Tebow they can be had.
It takes the right type of play combined with the right mind set.
Is Richt capable of taking notes and learning from the past ?
I think so , but none us really knows anymore than a Gator fan knows
how the extent of performance will change with their new DC.

FL Dawg

March 11th, 2010

Brantley played against KY after Tebow was hurt. JB has more playing time than any UGA QB. This is the year to get the Gators, but it will not be easy. Both O’s return a lot of their talent. Neither school has a QB with much experience. Both O lines return the majority of starters. Both teams have new DCs. Both Ds return some starters and a lot of players with experience. Special teams are a split as well. I would give the dawgs the edge on offense due to all five linemen and our two returning RBs. Gators have the edge on D due to their wealth of talent on that side of the ball. IF will be tough, make no mistake, but they are beatable this year.
Dawgs don’t need to be over confident as it will take time for the D to gel and figure things out. The dawgs should be a solid team by years end, but early on they will face some growing pains. Hopefully, these pains will not cost us a game.

6:51 pm

Appears that Florida is handling the transition from one QB to the other in a systematized manner. this compared to CMR’s getting caught first w/ his pants around his ankles w/ Stafford turning pro, and then naming and sticking w/ the Ginga Assassin because of poor planning for succession at that position. If Florida couldn’t have gotten Murray as they wanted, it would have been redshirt as a freshman, open competition for the starters position throughout the year. If Murray would have beat out Brantley, then all well and fine, and if not then he would be a starter the his jr and sr year. Seems Florida had/has a plan on QB succession, maybe CMR should follow suit.

If Georgia is not ready for South Carolina and plays uninspired football like against Kentucky last year then all this talk about Florida will mean nothing, win or lose. Georgia has to come out of the gate with 5-0 start to have a chance at roll against Tenn, Fl, and Auburn. The most important game after Colorado is Tenn. That game will set the tone for the remainder of the season. Suffer another loss like last year and then the wind comes out of their sails. Florida will be important as far as the over all scheme of the schedule and BCS ranking but even with a win, a loss to Auburn kills the season as far as the chance for a NC hope. A lot more teams are more important this year than just Florida. Don’t get me wrong I want a win against them in the worst way. So here’s hoping by then enough experience at QB has materialized and the new defense is clicking on all cylinders.
