Bulldog Bites: Florida game key to Dogs’ season?

CollegeFootballNews.com looks at the upcoming season for Mark Richt’s Dogs, noting that “there’s speed and athleticism across the board,” some playmakers in A.J. Green, Ben Jones and Justin Houston, and “the schedule isn’t all that bad, with the toughest road game at Auburn and the second toughest at South Carolina.”

georgia helmetExpectations aren’t all that high, CFN says, so the Dogs will be “flying under the radar” and “the rest of the conference isn’t going to be jaw-dropping good and the East is going to be as light as it’s been in years. If Georgia can take advantage of Florida in its transition period (which might only be one year) and can pull off the Cocktail Party win, it might really be just good enough to play in the SEC title game. … The schedule really is favorable enough to have a monster season, but Georgia has to be ready to rock right away with three road games in four weeks at South Carolina, Mississippi State, and Colorado wrapped around a home date with Arkansas.”

On the other hand, there are a lot of question marks about this team on both sides of the ball, CFN says, and “the number one thing to work on is: turnover margin. … The Dawgs weren’t all that bad when it came to giving the ball away, although 28 turnovers are still too many, but the defense didn’t pick up the slack with a pathetic 12 takeaways and a nation-low two recovered fumbles. This year’s team isn’t going to be good enough to not own the turnover game.”

A pretty fair assessment, I’d say.

A FRESH BREES?

Aaron Murray has a role model in Drew Brees. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Talking with ESPN.com, QB Aaron Murray seems to have selected Drew Brees as his role model. “A lot of people compare us because of the whole height thing [Murray is generously listed at 6-foot-1], and I like the way he plays the game,” Murray says. “Drew’s a competitor and does whatever it takes to win. He works harder than anyone. He’s in there preparing at 5 and 6 o’clock in the morning watching film. Everyone doubted him because of his size, and he’s going to work as hard as he can. That’s something I try to do, work hard and put that extra preparation in and hope it translates over to the field.”

COMPARE AND CONTRAST

Cornerback Branden Smith in Bulldogs Blog on how new defensive backs coach Scott Lakatos differs from Willie Martinez: “Coach Lakatos is real different from Coach Martinez … his teaching style is way different. Coach Lakatos, he sits down and shows us how to do things. He is a teacher, really.”

FLAWED DIAMOND DOGS

It’s early days, but so far it doesn’t look like UGA baseball coach David Perno’s every other year pattern of leading his team to the College World Series is likely to hold this season. The Diamond Dogs have lost five straight by a combined score of 62-11, with Kennesaw State’s Owls being the latest to beat up on the Bulldogs, 11-1 Tuesday at Foley Field.

Perno, known for being pretty blunt about his team, isn’t happy. “We’re not a good baseball team right now,” he said after Tuesday’s game. “We’re not showing a lot of fight and this has been the worst week in my tenure. … We’re struggling, and it’s very contagious. I’m very disappointed in the team right now.”

As he told The Red and Black, “the wins and the losses don’t bother me. It’s the lack of competitiveness, the lack of energy, the lack of confidence, the lack of fight, the lack of pride. You name it and we don’t have it.I thought this was going to be a gritty team and I’m kind of lost. I’ve never been as disappointed in a baseball team as I am of this team right now.”

The FL-GA Game in Jax is 7 1/2 months away, and everyone is alredy gettin fired up on both sides. With the player and coaqching changes on both teams, it looks like the build up and tension is going to be exciting to watch this year.
Hopefully, everyone will remember that we are all Americans and we represent the SEC. May the best team win.
All the best to everyone in the SEC.

Brandon Smith said it all………. It’s just too bad we wasted the past 2 seasons with excellent talent and poor coaches like Sweet Willie. I mean, how do you not win a NC with Stafford, Knowshon, Mo mass and several other players on NFL rosters? The South Carolina game is going to make or break our season in 10′. I hope the young pups are ready. Columbia is the armpit of the south!

ORLG8R .Your a dip.We used to own Florida and teh fountain in JV ran red every year ..we still own the series by 7 games and you went on a little romp for awhile..well that will all change amd Georgia will be back on top..remember we always played the week before and you all had the week off big advantage give to you since you could never beat Georgia.then look at atleast 4 of those games that our starting OB’S were knocked out of the game the week before we played you all..If you add those up Id say the last 20 yrs are right at even and could have went either way in games.Just happen to fall your way .I think the Leauge is finally seeing at how Dirty Florida can be and all the holding theydo and get away with to WIN..thats all that matters to you Gators since you werent used to ever winning before..not when i was growing up anyway .put that in your crack pipe and smoke it bub

Don, you are a fool. UGA had the week off last year and even wore their Grambling State uniforms and that didnt help. It’s never going back, Spurrier woke us up.

Yes the Gator game is make or break!! so are the other games, but UGA needs to beat its top rival and counter the success the Gators are having. If I had to pick, I’d certainly trade a loss to any team on the UGA schedule for a win against Florida.

Brantley a bkup

Appears that Florida is handling the transition from one QB to the other in a systematized manner. this compared to CMR’s getting caught first w/ his pants around his ankles w/ Stafford turning pro, and then naming and sticking w/ the Ginga Assassin because of poor planning for succession at that position. If Florida couldn’t have gotten Murray as they wanted, it would have been redshirt as a freshman, open competition for the starters position throughout the year. If Murray would have beat out Brantley, then all well and fine, and if not then he would be a starter the his jr and sr year. Seems Florida had/has a plan on QB succession, maybe CMR should follow suit.

With the exception of the the Corn Huskers, all are winning programs playing in BCS Bowl Games more times than not. Oh yea, they also put themselves in a position to play for a NC every now and then.

If Georgia is not ready for South Carolina and plays uninspired football like against Kentucky last year then all this talk about Florida will mean nothing, win or lose. Georgia has to come out of the gate with 5-0 start to have a chance at roll against Tenn, Fl, and Auburn. The most important game after Colorado is Tenn. That game will set the tone for the remainder of the season. Suffer another loss like last year and then the wind comes out of their sails. Florida will be important as far as the over all scheme of the schedule and BCS ranking but even with a win, a loss to Auburn kills the season as far as the chance for a NC hope. A lot more teams are more important this year than just Florida. Don’t get me wrong I want a win against them in the worst way. So here’s hoping by then enough experience at QB has materialized and the new defense is clicking on all cylinders.

While all this is true, we need to take it one game at a time. The last thing we need is to get ahead of ourselves; if we’re focusing on the florida game when we should be preparing for SC, we’ll get whupped. But I am very excited about this upcoming season… Improved D, great QB in Aaron Murray, and we still have A.J. And I definitely still believe in Richt….. So Go Dawgs!

Dr. Phil,

You say that, “Lastly, nothing indicates Richt can change….”. Wake up Dr. Phil!!! He fired virtually his ENTIRE defensive staff. If that isn’t a big change, then nothing is. Are you willfully ignorant or just clueless?
