Bulldog Bites: Florida game key to Dogs’ season?

CollegeFootballNews.com looks at the upcoming season for Mark Richt’s Dogs, noting that “there’s speed and athleticism across the board,” some playmakers in A.J. Green, Ben Jones and Justin Houston, and “the schedule isn’t all that bad, with the toughest road game at Auburn and the second toughest at South Carolina.”

georgia helmetExpectations aren’t all that high, CFN says, so the Dogs will be “flying under the radar” and “the rest of the conference isn’t going to be jaw-dropping good and the East is going to be as light as it’s been in years. If Georgia can take advantage of Florida in its transition period (which might only be one year) and can pull off the Cocktail Party win, it might really be just good enough to play in the SEC title game. … The schedule really is favorable enough to have a monster season, but Georgia has to be ready to rock right away with three road games in four weeks at South Carolina, Mississippi State, and Colorado wrapped around a home date with Arkansas.”

On the other hand, there are a lot of question marks about this team on both sides of the ball, CFN says, and “the number one thing to work on is: turnover margin. … The Dawgs weren’t all that bad when it came to giving the ball away, although 28 turnovers are still too many, but the defense didn’t pick up the slack with a pathetic 12 takeaways and a nation-low two recovered fumbles. This year’s team isn’t going to be good enough to not own the turnover game.”

A pretty fair assessment, I’d say.

A FRESH BREES?

Aaron Murray has a role model in Drew Brees. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Talking with ESPN.com, QB Aaron Murray seems to have selected Drew Brees as his role model. “A lot of people compare us because of the whole height thing [Murray is generously listed at 6-foot-1], and I like the way he plays the game,” Murray says. “Drew’s a competitor and does whatever it takes to win. He works harder than anyone. He’s in there preparing at 5 and 6 o’clock in the morning watching film. Everyone doubted him because of his size, and he’s going to work as hard as he can. That’s something I try to do, work hard and put that extra preparation in and hope it translates over to the field.”

COMPARE AND CONTRAST

Cornerback Branden Smith in Bulldogs Blog on how new defensive backs coach Scott Lakatos differs from Willie Martinez: “Coach Lakatos is real different from Coach Martinez … his teaching style is way different. Coach Lakatos, he sits down and shows us how to do things. He is a teacher, really.”

FLAWED DIAMOND DOGS

It’s early days, but so far it doesn’t look like UGA baseball coach David Perno’s every other year pattern of leading his team to the College World Series is likely to hold this season. The Diamond Dogs have lost five straight by a combined score of 62-11, with Kennesaw State’s Owls being the latest to beat up on the Bulldogs, 11-1 Tuesday at Foley Field.

Perno, known for being pretty blunt about his team, isn’t happy. “We’re not a good baseball team right now,” he said after Tuesday’s game. “We’re not showing a lot of fight and this has been the worst week in my tenure. … We’re struggling, and it’s very contagious. I’m very disappointed in the team right now.”

As he told The Red and Black, “the wins and the losses don’t bother me. It’s the lack of competitiveness, the lack of energy, the lack of confidence, the lack of fight, the lack of pride. You name it and we don’t have it.I thought this was going to be a gritty team and I’m kind of lost. I’ve never been as disappointed in a baseball team as I am of this team right now.”

It amazes me how many UGA fans think that Aaron Murray is just gonna come in and light up the SEC. Even the great Peyton Manning struggled his first year and as we all know, he never did beat Florida. Brantley also has question marks because this will be his first time with “live bullets”, still he has been in the system for 3 years and has at least proven that he can throw the ball against college defenses. Yet UGA fans are acting like they have an advantage here….???????

termigator good question baring the 08 number of injuries I’d say 8-4 this year due to new QB new D etc..9-3 or 10-2 next year ..he needs to win against the UT’s and UF’s more than the overall won loss IMHO..and biggest concern is cutting out the turnovers and penalties..that to my mind has been the bane of this team for going on 2 years.

Hilarious! I love how every season there’s always a chance that UGA makes it to the SEC title game! Hope truly springs eternal.

I’m gonna wait and see how they play before making these kinds of statements.

Other than last years Tennessee fans, I’ve never seen so much swagger from a middle-of-the-road (7-5)team’s fanbase. I’t good to be optimistic but I’m hearing some of these dawg fans talking 10-2 or even 11-1. Lot of conversation about beating Florida this year. Based on what??? Can’t be a “brand new, never thrown an SEC pass” QB. Got an experienced OL coming back with 2 good RB’s, but take a look at Florida with 4 seniors on the OL and 3 quality backs and tell me there’s an advantage there. Got rid of Willie, so I can understand optimism there with a new DC but normally it takes a year or so to really work in a new scheme and longer sometimes to recruit for it. So what is it based on?? I almost suspect it’s based on not having played a 2010 game yet.

Someone in this thread wrote that Brantley is a “career backup.” Seriously? Brantley backed up one of the best quarterbacks that the SEC has ever produced – and THAT gets held against him? NUTS!

Brantley is going to have an outstanding season, he is a fourth year junior who is well-schooled in the offense, will be playing behind a very good offensive line and will have a defense that is returning a TON of players who have played meaningful minutes. The Gators are in far better shape than some of you are willing to concede.

Brantley will end up being a first round draft pick at quarterback, of that there is little doubt.

Florida is going to be a tough out this season, like always . . .

Richt better than Saban or Meyer

March 10th, 2010
6:11 pm

Agree with everyone here, Richt has LESS bad seasons than either Saban or Meyer.

Florida will not be the team for UGA to beat, everybody will pund Florida this year, Florida has one of the worst defensive staffs in the SEC, not a player, Strong is gone

Best defensive foes for UGA are:
1- Bama
2- LSU
3- South Carolina
4- Tenn

It could be worse, we could be stuck like Florida with a QB with 2a high school competition experience, and college experience against Charleston Southern, Troy, and Fla Intl.

Thank God our QB Murray has been tested against the toughest level competition and won 2 state championships.

Agree, Brantley is a ineffective career back-up who would have got an SEC start if he could really QB.

Meyer doesn’t trust him, neither do we.

Please list for all to see EXACTLY hgow many passes Brantley made in 2009 in games BESIDES CHARLESTON SOUTHERN FLORIDA INTL, AND TROY?

Get a clue FLorida homer, the guy’s has NEVER DONE ANYTHING BUT MOP UP DUTY.

Brantley wasn’t tested:
1) in high school- played 2a division– a joke
2) in practice in college–defense not allowed to hit em
3) Against SEC teams never started a single game
4)Has virtually ZERO experience besides meaningless mop up duty against teams like Charleston Southern

Florida won’t compete with anybody in 2010 with Mr. Untested. And with their incompetant defensive staff and their fumbling running backs.

Note:
Brantley cannot rely on a running game, Meyer only called 1 running play to his running backs in the SEC Championship because they fumble too often–6 fumbles AGAINST TROY?

Florida will of course be THE key game in the season.
I dont’ buy the idea that if we don’t get them this
year if could be another long streak.

CMR made changes that will payoff down the road when
our QB will be more experienced and CTG has an opportunity
to get the type of personel he needs to play the system
that he invisions.

Florida is more of a question than they would be honest
enough to admit, but their psychological advantage cannot be
dismissed . It is without question a key factor in keeping
this series from becoming the rivalry it should be.
But Alabama has shown that even with Tebow they can be had.
It takes the right type of play combined with the right mind set.
Is Richt capable of taking notes and learning from the past ?
I think so , but none us really knows anymore than a Gator fan knows
how the extent of performance will change with their new DC.

Brantley played against KY after Tebow was hurt. JB has more playing time than any UGA QB. This is the year to get the Gators, but it will not be easy. Both O’s return a lot of their talent. Neither school has a QB with much experience. Both O lines return the majority of starters. Both teams have new DCs. Both Ds return some starters and a lot of players with experience. Special teams are a split as well. I would give the dawgs the edge on offense due to all five linemen and our two returning RBs. Gators have the edge on D due to their wealth of talent on that side of the ball. IF will be tough, make no mistake, but they are beatable this year.
Dawgs don’t need to be over confident as it will take time for the D to gel and figure things out. The dawgs should be a solid team by years end, but early on they will face some growing pains. Hopefully, these pains will not cost us a game.
