Bulldog Bites: Florida game key to Dogs’ season?

CollegeFootballNews.com looks at the upcoming season for Mark Richt’s Dogs, noting that “there’s speed and athleticism across the board,” some playmakers in A.J. Green, Ben Jones and Justin Houston, and “the schedule isn’t all that bad, with the toughest road game at Auburn and the second toughest at South Carolina.”

georgia helmetExpectations aren’t all that high, CFN says, so the Dogs will be “flying under the radar” and “the rest of the conference isn’t going to be jaw-dropping good and the East is going to be as light as it’s been in years. If Georgia can take advantage of Florida in its transition period (which might only be one year) and can pull off the Cocktail Party win, it might really be just good enough to play in the SEC title game. … The schedule really is favorable enough to have a monster season, but Georgia has to be ready to rock right away with three road games in four weeks at South Carolina, Mississippi State, and Colorado wrapped around a home date with Arkansas.”

On the other hand, there are a lot of question marks about this team on both sides of the ball, CFN says, and “the number one thing to work on is: turnover margin. … The Dawgs weren’t all that bad when it came to giving the ball away, although 28 turnovers are still too many, but the defense didn’t pick up the slack with a pathetic 12 takeaways and a nation-low two recovered fumbles. This year’s team isn’t going to be good enough to not own the turnover game.”

A pretty fair assessment, I’d say.

A FRESH BREES?

Aaron Murray has a role model in Drew Brees. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Talking with ESPN.com, QB Aaron Murray seems to have selected Drew Brees as his role model. “A lot of people compare us because of the whole height thing [Murray is generously listed at 6-foot-1], and I like the way he plays the game,” Murray says. “Drew’s a competitor and does whatever it takes to win. He works harder than anyone. He’s in there preparing at 5 and 6 o’clock in the morning watching film. Everyone doubted him because of his size, and he’s going to work as hard as he can. That’s something I try to do, work hard and put that extra preparation in and hope it translates over to the field.”

COMPARE AND CONTRAST

Cornerback Branden Smith in Bulldogs Blog on how new defensive backs coach Scott Lakatos differs from Willie Martinez: “Coach Lakatos is real different from Coach Martinez … his teaching style is way different. Coach Lakatos, he sits down and shows us how to do things. He is a teacher, really.”

FLAWED DIAMOND DOGS

It’s early days, but so far it doesn’t look like UGA baseball coach David Perno’s every other year pattern of leading his team to the College World Series is likely to hold this season. The Diamond Dogs have lost five straight by a combined score of 62-11, with Kennesaw State’s Owls being the latest to beat up on the Bulldogs, 11-1 Tuesday at Foley Field.

Perno, known for being pretty blunt about his team, isn’t happy. “We’re not a good baseball team right now,” he said after Tuesday’s game. “We’re not showing a lot of fight and this has been the worst week in my tenure. … We’re struggling, and it’s very contagious. I’m very disappointed in the team right now.”

As he told The Red and Black, “the wins and the losses don’t bother me. It’s the lack of competitiveness, the lack of energy, the lack of confidence, the lack of fight, the lack of pride. You name it and we don’t have it.I thought this was going to be a gritty team and I’m kind of lost. I’ve never been as disappointed in a baseball team as I am of this team right now.”

Being in the very heart of Gator Country, I can tell you that Florida fans are excited about the 2010 season. While there will certainly be transistion and growing pains, the returning and new talent is significant and I just think it was a good time for the “changing of the guard”. Not because we wanted to see Tim go because UF will NEVER be able to repay Tim Tebow for all of the great things he has done for the University. Only because it started to become burdensome and very distracting with all of the attention and focus on one player. That certainly wasn’t Tim’s fault, but I do believe our coaching staff did lean a little too heavy on him at times. Still…2 conference championships and BCS titles…hard to argue with. Unfortunately though, with all of the sky high expectations, last season became such a grind and for some reason 2010 feels like a breath of fresh air.

I think that you can look at the season in three parts…SC is definitely the key game in the first four games and a loss in that game (which i think we win) usually means a bad year. In the middle part of the season, Tennessee is a benchmark game. They have beaten us 3 out of 4 so a victory would mean that we’re heading toward a good season. The last part of the schedule, UF is definitely the game with Auburn second. If we win these games, We are headed to the SEC Championship. GT is one of those game that we cannot lose.

Thuga, you are typical of a program who came in 3rd in the SEC behind UGA and Carolina. When are you going to win a bowl game? UGA, UF, any SEC team is no more dysfunctional (since Tech grads can’t spell) than ACC teams.

Dorsey Hill

March 10th, 2010
3:58 pm

If history tells us anything it is that the outcome of the UGA/UF game is overrated when it comes to conference play. The only three times we played in the SEECG (2002, 2003, & 2005) we lost to UF. The three times we beat Florida in the era of the SEECG (1997, 2004 and 2007) we failed to make the SECCG so there seems to be a lack of correlation between beating UF and winning East titles, although you might find years (1992 is the only one I can think of) where a win vs. UF would have led to a SEECG appearance.

Where losing to UF so routinely has effected us is in the context of a National Championship. Arguably, beating UF in either 2005 or 2002 could have led to appearances in a BCS title game.

The lesson here is last UF’s dominance in the series can continue and we can still win our share of SEC titles. However, the series has to even out somewhat for us to take the next step to the national stage. This year certainly presents that opportunity.

I do think that the 3-4 will be better suited to contain the spread. Corners not having as much run support obligations will diminish the effectiveness of play-action which has consistently burned us vs. UF. Further, the weakness of the 3-4 will be vs. incredibly accurate NFL-type QB’s and a power run game. Since there is little expectation the UF will come with either asset, we should be primed to tuirn the series around.

I have predicted that we will win the East in 2010 and I stick by that. However, its not the games vs. UT, UF and USC that have me concerned. I think we get through those 2-1 at worst. Its Auburn and Arky that I have circled. Not that I think either team will be a great team, but I do think that they will put up points in bunches. If we have an off-day offensively vs. those teams it could be a real challenge. If and this is a big IF, the defense gets that 3-4 down and Murray is as good as I think he is, we could be playing Bama in Atlanta with more than a Sugar Bowl appearence on the line come this December.

Dorsey Hill, you had me until you said about UF not having an NFL calibre QB. Finally UF will have one that all experts say has Stafford arm strength in Brantley. Buck Belue said that he would have been the 4th best starter in the SEC if he had started last year. You better worry about the road game to KY and your defense which lost 5 starters learning the 3-4.

Easy now termigator, lets not get all anti-techie on us. Oops, I forgot, thats what fakedogs do. No sheepskin, all pickup! I would spend a lot more time studying what the true condition the thuga doogs are in and how they got there. When CMR let them in the endzone in Jacksonville it was all over. You can’t put that dog back in the pen. It’s going to have to say “UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT” before things change. Sure we are going to win a lot of ball games and that fills the stands and makes the program look great but we should be in the top ten every year, no excuses…..yet that’s all I hear is excuses. Prove me wrong!

As an alumnus of UGA, I know that we need to defeat Florida this year. In doing that, it would mean three wins over the last 6 years or 7 years and frankly, that is better than most teams that have faced Florida 7 years running. We won in 04, 08 and with 2010 as a win, that would be great.

Also, we need to show off the SEC East crown this year with or w.o. the SEC Championship. Come 2011 ………..we need to win the SEC ……………period.

I expect this scenario and anything less in 2010 and 11 would be a huge failure.

Go Dogs.

UGA vs Tech? We expect the usual drubbing of them over the next 5 or 10 years, say w/ 9 wins.

Trey Burton may take some of that role, but with Moody, Demps, Gillislee and Mack Brown (if healthy), expect the RBs to take alot more of those 3rd and short snaps. I expect the short to medium passing game to be somewhat improved as well.
