Amid all the change, some familiar refrains in Athens

Logan Gray decided to give it another shot at quarterback. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Logan Gray decided to give it another shot at quarterback. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Whew, a lot to digest from the fount of information spewing out of the media briefings held this week at Butts-Mehre.

We learned who’s going to line up where on defense, at least initially, and that the DL will be anchored by the “nose,” not nose tackle or nose guard. The outside linebackers will be primarily pass rushers while the more athletic inside linebackers will have more pass coverage responsibilty.

We were told that in the new defensive scheme cornerbacks won’t be as much involved in run support as in the past (which led to Bryan Evans getting badly beaten time after time) and that new secondary coach Scott Lakatos is teaching his players completely different, NFL-style footwork from what Willie Martinez taught them. (Now if he can just get them to turn their heads to see where the ball is.)

We found out who’ll be coaching what on special teams, including that kickoff coverage — the area in which the Dogs most drastically need  improvement — will be handled by Warren Belin, whose Vandy kick coverage team ranked second in the SEC and 29th nationally last year. (UGA was last in the conference and 117th nationally.)

And we learned that Mark Richt has been open to suggestions from his new staff members, resulting in a reworking of the practice and meetings schedule, but that he still doesn’t think there’s any change needed in Georgia’s strength and conditioning program.

Speaking of which, this year’s mat drills supposedly have been the toughest ever but more A grades than ever are being given. The boys are really getting after it, Richt says. The team is really into it this offseason. There’s a lot of excitement. They’re working harder than ever, harder even than last year when we were told they were really into it and excited and working harder than ever.

Though now we’re hearing that not everyone was working all that hard, at least according to A.J. Green, who said “we thought things were just going to be handed to us and didn’t work as hard as we should.”

Well, that sounds familiar, too. Wasn’t that supposedly the reason the 2008 team didn’t handle its preseason No. 1 ranking all that well?

Should Logan Gray have been allowed to decide he wants to stay at quarterback?

Anyway, one other familiar thing we heard out of Athens this week was Mike Bobo talking about the quarterback competition and why Logan Gray is still in it despite having talked with coaches late last season about switching to wide receiver or secondary.

Said Bobo: “The thing about this kid is, all he’s ever wanted to do is help Georgia and play and compete. And that’s what he wants to do this spring at quarterback.”

Which sounds way too close to what we heard in the past about Joe Tereshinski and Joe Cox to suit some folks, including former Georgia football player Ben Dukes, who blogs at The Dawg’s View.

Says Dukes: “You know what? When I was at Georgia, all I ever wanted to do was help my team win … and the coaches decided THAT would be best accomplished by keeping me on the sidelines. I don’t disagree. I wasn’t the biggest, strongest or fastest player … but I had a great deal of heart. My grit and determination earned me the respect of my peers, sparse playing time, a Varsity Letter, and a pair of awards. THAT’S ALL. NEVER would you have heard Jim Donnan say, ‘We’re gonna start Dukes at defensive end because all he’s ever wanted was to help this team.’”

Dukes says the QB competition should be about who has the tools to lead Georgia to an SEC championship. “It shouldn’t be about who has the most time in the system. It shouldn’t be about who ‘really wants to help the University of Georgia’.”

He raises an interesting question. Bobo’s comments have strongly indicated, though he won’t come right out and say it, that Gray stands a much better chance of playing at some position other than QB. And yet the coaching staff has let the player decide where he will spend spring practice. Which means if and when he eventually moves elsewhere, he will have missed a spring learning that position. It also means a bunch of reps in practice with the first-team offense will have been wasted — reps that could have gone to the eventual starter and his backup.

On the other hand, there are valid arguments that there’s value in having the only quarterback on the team who’s taken snaps in a real game participating in the spring QB competition, and that having to beat out Gray will make Aaron Murray or Zach Mettenberger a better signal-caller.

What do you think? Should the coaches have let Gray decide where he’ll play this spring or simply told him where they want him? Is letting him compete for the starting QB job the best use of what we’re told are his considerable athletic abilities? Should being a loyal Dog with several years in the program trump superior but inexperienced talent when Georgia chooses a starter at any position?

Feel free to vote in the poll, comment or have it both ways.

The new coachinmg staff at UGA is a start in the right direction but some questions remain. How did a defense that was the terror of the SEC ibn the second half of the season in 2007 become one of the worst in the league in two years? How did a kick coverage team that was more than adequate in 2007 fall to 112th in the nation in 2009? Why did the defense not cause more turnovers? I don’t believe that the fires coaches can be blamed for everything that went wrong so CMR must do some soul searching to find the cause of the collapse of a team that began 2008 as #2 in the nation and didn’t even challenge for the SEC championship the next two years. Injuries had an effect on the team in 2008 but that wasn’t the only problem. I don’t believe that Fabris being stubborn was the reason the kick coverage team became such a complete liability. IMO, Fabris wasn’t given the tools he needed to be successful. Guys like Nick Williams and Rambo were red-shirted while a back-up QB was covering kicks. On defense guys were not going after the ball. When was the last time any of ya’ll saw a UGA defender swiping an arm at the ball, or putting his helmet on the ball, while making a tackle? Then the D backs were taught to cover with their backs to the QB, I would think an interception would be much harder to come by when one doesn’t see the ball. The devil is in the details, in the little things, and again, IMO, the staff was not coaching the little things. If Gray is going to be used on special teams why not make him the holder on field goals and safety on punt teams? That way the Dawgs can actually fake a kick with some chance of success. Why not teach pass rushers to get their hands up when they are blocked so they can bat down a few passes? Instead of red shirting good defensive athletes why not use them on kick coverage teams? And for goodness sakes, teach the tacklers to go after the ball and the defense to know where the ball is!

It’s actually pretty simple. In 08 we lost too many kids to injuries…coupled with a strong schedule 10 wins was a great job.In retrospect it was silly to even think we would be an elite team losing 18 players from our two deep.No other team had overcome such prior to or after that season.Nobody.09 after losing the big three and Sturdy off the OL once again it was pretty silly to think this team was supposed to be an elite squad…there was nothing there coming out of spring or summer camp to make anybody but a UGA fan feel as if we were going to have a big year.Every person outside of the program who observed that team in spring and summer said we were in for a struggle…ie Tommy T,Kirk Hirbstreet etc.You know we did have some defensive issues and what not but when you step back and look at those two ballclubs you have to admit BOTH were very flawed teams neither should have been considered a 10 game winner. In 08 we thought all we needed was Stafford and Moreno…turned out not to be the case.

Folks like to try to compare UGA to Bama and FLA but my question is when did those schools go through what we did in 08?Neither.This season Both get a taste of what we went through in 09…losing your best guys to the pros…let’s see how they respond this year before we go claiming Bama and FLA are so superior to UGA…or better yet that Saban and Meyer are so much better than Richt. You know folks were going on and on about how Stoops and Carroll would have coached UGA up in 08..well they got their taste of life without their big guns and look what happened at USC and Okl.

Just wondering what you put in the water in Athens…this is not a knock on the University, but more of what amazes me that, QB’s in particular, stick around when they know they won’t be the starter…QB’s that were Elite 11 could very easily hook up at another school…maybe UGA gets the true scholar athletes and not just the football heads…of course an education should be the no. 1 goal, however playing football with these top tier players must be up there pretty high also…Cox should have left, Gray should have left, but both stayed…the QB from Mich left to go to Ark because the new coach wouldn’t be running the kind of offense that he could be successful…wonder if Murray will bolt if he isn’t the starter, I doubt that Met will leave even if he was guaranteed a starting position elsewhere..how about the new kid, Hutson Mason , wonder what he’d do (probably get into boxing instead) :) … is it that they redshirt these player and the window of opportunity is not too great…don’t know the answer, so it must be something that they put in the water…oops forgot about one other factor that might be the answer, the Coeds…

I am a long-time UGA season ticket holder and UGA graduate, born into UGA football. I try to support Coach Richt, but honestly, he has hired since December 20, 2000 the worst set of coaches on his staff of any coach in America. It is said that Brian VanGorder is a great coach, and honestly how can that be looking at the Falcons’ Defense ? The entire rest of the staff has been a failure.

It is my place to determine if posters to this blog, daily, are blindly trying to say that 1-3 vs the vols who have been horrible the last 4 years and 1-3 vs Florida the last 4 years too, along with 2-2 vs Kentucky and a loss to every other SEC East team the last 4 years, constitutes the best coach in The SEC.

Auburn Coach Richt has beat 4 years in a row. All that means is that Auburn has lost 4 more games than we have over the last 4 years. And, we’ve lost 14.

You have the right to say that Coach Richt is the best coach in The SEC all you want.

I also have the right to say that that does not begin to be the truth. He’s the 4th highest paid coach because the other 3 ahead of him in salary, are ahead of him in the Standings.

We’ve not been very good for 4 years now.

Our problems on Offense have been penalties, interceptions and fumbles. Showing Loyalty to his Offensive Coaching Staff, all coaching positions which they did not play themselves, Coach Richt stood pat with his Offensive Coaching Staff when it was obvious that he could get away with just replacing his college roommate on Defense. And, now we feature 3 freshmen quarterbacks.

I desire to see a change in some way shape or form on Offense. We have squandered tremendous talent on Offense, not recognizing who they are even looking at. They play favorites. They have lost to 8 teams who were not ranked in the Top 25 Final AP Poll in the Coach Richt 9 Year Era. They have not beat 1 single solitary Top 10 Final AP Poll team in a bowl game.

We have beat 3 Top 10 Final AP Poll teams in the Coach Richt Era. We have 3 wins in 11 such games against actual Top 10 Final AP Poll teams in the Coach Richt Era.

That hardly qualifies as the Best Coaching Staff in The SEC. We are not that in the Coach Richt Era. Maybe we wish we were. Running in here to blog that Coach Richt is better than Florida in the Coach Richt Era is total bullcrap in every imaginable measurement.

Paul Hewitt who has a 4-6 record vs UGA, is 21 games under .500 in his conference, and has his men’s basketball team at Georgia tek on NCAA Probation with an Academic Progress Rate of 914, limited to only 11 scholarships, is a failure in his 10 Year Career. Coach Richt is not a failure, but neither is he the Best, even the second best, in just his Conference in the same 10 Year Career either. Florida and LSU have better won/loss records than Coach Richt in the Coach Richt Era, and frankly now Alabama in the last 4 years has passed Coach Richt too. We are indeed the 4th best in our own conference.

10-10 the last 4 years in your own Division of your own conference will do that to you.

I am excited that we will clearly field our best Defense in 30 years this coming season and feature the 2 best kickers on 1 team in America as well. I will maintain the vigil that we must have a far better Offensive Coaching Staff than we have demonstrated. I believe that is supporting this program I have poured so many dollars into for so long, and I firmly believe too that you are not supporting our UGA Bulldogs’ Football Program to state that we are the Best in The SEC in the Coach Richt Era.

You are satisfied with this performance and think it better to lie about the state of the program, than to stand up and say you are not satisfied. We fired Jim Donnan for losing 13 games his last 4 years saying we wanted more. Coach Richt in his last 4 years has lost 14. This is not where I expected to be in the 10th year of the Coach Richt Era. It’s not. You are not being a good fan of the program to say that we in fact are the greatest in The Conference. It’s a total lie. 4th say that, and I will leave you alone, not before. I now return you to your lies from those who think that their lies are supporting, or worse yet, are true.

Coach Richt Era of 10 years now this season :

36 Top 25 Final AP Poll teams we’ve played & won 17.

11 Top 10 Final AP Poll teams we’ve played & won 3.

12 games vs 3 teams in The SEC East the last 4 years & won 4.

Corey Philips entered spring 2001 as our number one then Richt made a tough decision to start a redshirt freshman over the then senior Philips. All of you heard of Green, right?

Coach has had a tough time starting true freshmen at QB right off the bat, but then again every coach should reserve ruining a kids psyche for the rest of his career!

Stafford was a better player than Joe T but wasn’t ready mentally at game one. Cox wasn’t the best QB going into last season but no way was Richt going to start Murray as a true freshman simply because he could have ruined him.

Bobo and Richt were QBs. They are allowing Gray a chance to compete this spring because they know what it’’s like. They know Gray isn’t the guy.

Which is it ?

Only those who have played can be fans of UGA Bulldogs’ Football Program and have their say heard ?

Or, even the guys who did play cannot have their say that here we are again with no Quarterback prepared by Coach Richt and Mike Bobo ?

Ben Dukes is right as rain. Spot on. It’s not been a good run of decisions about preparing a Quarterback for my beloved UGA Bulldogs’ Football Program. And, it has not been a good run of the decisions thereafter to determine who should play any position on the Offense. They have been playing favorites, even when it is obvious to my mom that they are Starting those with experience even when their experience proves they are not as good as those buried on the depth chart behind them. And, excuse me Ben Dukes was great as a player, whether he played for a different coach, or the current one.

I think some of the coaching staffs comments have been misinterpreted here. First off, Logan said himself that the staff never encouraged him to move positions. It was an internet rumor that eventually Logan went to the staff with because of the uncertainty that had arisen due to the widespread rumor. Bobo told him that he always envisioned him at QB and that was where they wanted him. We would not have in the QB race if we didn’t think he had the talent to play there, end of story.

Just because Richt says that Logan has the athletic ability to play another position doesn’t mean that his athletic talents are being wasted by trying to play QB. Just because he has the talent to play safety or WR doesn’t mean he should.

We are not wasting first-string snaps by letting Logan practice at QB. Our staff, and Logan, both think he had a legitimate shot at winning the job. Good luck to him.

Regarding experience – Taking a few snaps, throwing a few passes to the opponent doesn’t seem to make him “experienced,” so that concern shouldn’t matter over the other guys.

Regarding talent – Gray looked good in the Spring game last year, and maybe, just maybe, Gray actually IS good enough to compete. If coaches know he isn’t, then they indeed ARE being foolish and wasting a spring for him to contribute at another position and allow the real starting QB to get more reps. A free ride at UGA and wearing the G each Saturday is honor enough though, and we don’t give “Rudy” the starting job at QB.

Regarding QB depth – Yes, if UGA knows that Gray is NOT as capable as Murray and Mettenberger, than YES they are making a mistake. Gray should be on the field returning punts, as a slot receiver, or safety

To say that our strength and conditioning is doing well is BULL!!!!.
UGA ranks last in the nation in returning injured players to the field and their productivity thereafter.
Alabama is first in the nation.
This has had an impact on those Defensive Coaches that turned down UGA , an why they declined the job. CMR will not fire VanHallenger. (spelling?), because of loyalty.

Can anyone tell me the last injured UGA player that returned to form and was as impressive as before the injury? I honestly cant think of one…… Boss Bailey???? maybe, but he was never as good upon his return. He did fair in the NFL…….go figure!

To BuLLdawg:

I do agree with you on many, many points. You seem to take a lot of flack on this blog when you are merely stating the ugly facts. I would remind you of one thing, Offense does not win Championships. Yes, Offense must be successful, but when UGA was winning b/w 02-05, it was Defense, game managment, and special teams that got us threw the “close games”. We are not winning close games b/c we havent had a defense to keep it close. Alabama ran the ball, but did not light up the score board. They won with defense!!!!! And we can recover if our defense steps up…….and our offense will RUN THE BALL.

AceDawg

March 1st, 2010
11:20 am

jaglaw – Just to pick a fight despite my general agreement/understanding of the defense wins championships argument…

Every aspect is equally important. Neither an offense or defense can be good enough for a team to be championship material unless the other side of the ball is respectable. After all, think about UGA vs. Florida in the Terence Edwards “drop” season – in that game, our offense failed and couldn’t be overcome by our great defense.

In UGA’s 2009 losses against Ok State, LSU, Tennessee, and Florida, our offense averaged under 15 points a game (only 13 if you take away interception return by defense against UT). In those games a blazing offense might have won us the game (it sure did againt South Carolina and Arkansas).

The point – a team is great simply when it is overall better than its opponents, even if its defense is mediocre. I do strongly prefer a great defense though and miss the dominant Dawgs D – the country’s best – when Van Gorder roamed our sidelines. I have faith in Grantham.

Three guys competing at QB is not too many. Maybe Logan can earn the starting position. Maybe he can win the No. 2 spot. If he didn’t have a shot, surely somebody in the program who sees how he practices would’ve told him so. We, the fans, haven’t really seen enough to say.

He’s posting faulty stats (Top 10 AP finishes??? If we beat them, then they won’t likely be in the Top 10 AP now would they).

He’s blaming the coaches for not running Knowshon against UF and Bama (blowout games that we were out of it early. He must be of the Paul Johnson mentality to run it even if you’re down by 20+ until the last 2 minutes).

There is nothing wrong with criticizing CMR or his staff for their downsides.

Regarding Logan…

He should be at QB for now.

1) We don’t have any depth there this spring. Competition and coaching (yes, a junior can help a RS Freshman learn some things) are the benefits keeping him out there. We can worry about the Fall depth chart in the fall when Mason arrives.

2) Who knows… he may be the #2 QB on this squad. And if Murray gets hurt (he’s been hurt the last 2 seasons), then I want my #2 QB playing QB and not WR.

Finally… if we move Logan to another position that we’ve been filling with recruits already (WR & CB), who’s to say that he won’t be a backup elsewhere anyway?

How bout the ones that havent:
Vince Vance- started most games in 09, not spectacular.
Sturdivant- injury, then re-injured without contact
Boss Bailey- repeat
Quintin Banks- nuff said

The list goes on and on……and quite frankly if I need to do you a list, you dont keep up with UGA football. Joe was, last year, the best option available. If Logan is, he’ll start. If not, he won’t. Find something else to write about, please, like whether or not Richard Samuel will redshirt this year, or how Sturdivant is doing, or whether Bruce Figgins is healthy, or what Fabris is doing these days.

Yep, Murray now weighs 240 lbs…he went on a cruise and ate anything and everything…heard he had a fake mustache and beard so that he could get different looks, that way no one would see him seconds, thirds, and sometimes fourths…also heard that they had to move him to an inside cabin so the boat didn’t tilt to one side…with all that eating he is now full of it, sort of like who ever told you he weighed 240 lb.

Who cares what Coach Mike Bobo says or thinks. I have seen enough of his inept blunders over the past two seasons to wonder why he’s still employed. Being from Thomasville and his Dad was head coach at Thomasville High, why can’t we recruit these players that continue to go to Fla, FSU, etc. The myth about South Ga football is that we really do need these types of players. But, our recruiting coordinator just loves those inner city, primma donna, punks.

DuLLdawg views his team on the TV at the asylum. At last count there are 116 Div 1 football teams. What did Ga do wrong to have this buffoon feign allegiance to them? Last year was not not up to standard and changes were made. Until last year you could look over the defensive lapses because the end result of the season was pretty darn good (though not up to DuLLdawg’s standard). I don’t care who the QB is next year, because he is going to have a great cast surrounding him. Run the ball and play action passing should return to Sanford this fall. The defense can’t possibly be worse (can it?) So I for one am optimistic that Ga will return to the top echelon of the SEC East in 2k10. Looking forward to it actually

Who cares what some second-stringer under sandlot Donnan misinterprets about the situation?
