Lack of BCS title doesn’t keep Dogs from decade’s Top 10

UGA fans have had a lot to celebrate in the past decade. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

UGA fans have had a lot to celebrate in the past decade. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

We’ve heard a lot recently about how Georgia fans are disappointed with the way things have been going lately for Mark Richt’s program. But it’s worth noting that most of that disappointment is focused on the past two seasons and, in fact, is prompted in large measure by how consistently successful the Dogs have been since Richt came to Athens.

Richt raised the standards of what Georgia fans consider acceptable, and how he has to live up to those standards.

That point is driven home by some numbers crunching done by the CFB Data Warehouse (with a tip of the hat to Rivals’ Fanblogs.com for pointing this out).

Factoring in winning percentage, schedule, national championships won and Big 4 bowl appearances, the Data Warehouse folks have compiled a comprehensive college football ranking for the years 2000-2009, and UGA comes in No. 8 for the decade. (That covers Jim Donnan’s last season and all of Richt’s to date.)

Here’s how the Top 25 looks:

1. Southern Cal
 2. Florida
 3. LSU
4. Ohio State
5. Oklahoma
6. Texas
 7. Miami
 8. Georgia 9. Oregon
 10. FSU
11. Virginia Tech
 12. Alabama
13. Oregon State
 14. Michigan
 15. Auburn 16. Notre Dame
17. Tennessee
 18. Georgia Tech
 19. UCLA
 20. California 21. Penn State
 22. Iowa
23. Wisconsin
 24. West Virginia
 25. Boston College

What’s especially notable is that all of the teams ranked ahead of Georgia won a national championship during that decade and the Dogs are the highest-ranked team that didn’t win one.

While it might be popular to judge things from a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately point of view, Richt’s most severe critics have to concede that when you look at the overall record, he’s done a remarkable job, even without winning a crystal football.

Whether you think he can keep it up in the next decade and eventually get UGA a BCS title is certainly something that’s hotly debated in Bulldog circles. You either see this past season and a half as a hiccup for a still successful program, or you see a program starting to decline.

I’m with the hiccup crowd. What about you?

While on the subject of the decade ranking, it’s also notable that using the same criteria, the SEC was the top-ranked conference for 2000-2009, followed by the Pac 10, Big 12, Big 10, ACC, Big East, Mountain West, Division 1-A independents, the WAC and Conference USA. Which might come as a surprise to a lot of Big 12 boosters.

I am with you!
Coach Mark Richt is the best thing that has happened to UGA football since Coach Dooley retired! I admire his ethics, integrity and his desire to “finish the drill”. I believe in him and not the “so called fans” who jump off the band wagon it gets tough! I support Coach Richt no matter what the seasons hold, he has been good to us and we should trust him and be good to him also! GO DAWGS!

Luck plays a HUGE factor in winning it all. It’s unrealistic to expect a team to go undefeated (i know bama did it but nobody expected them to) Fact is Richt has put his team in a position to play for it all just as much as Meyer and Miles did. In 01 they finished 12-1 going into the bowls, and had 2 losses in 05 when they won the SEC (no better than what Miles did the year LSU won it all).

I am and will always be a loyal UGA fan. But there are some facts that should be mentioned, and at the same time be a little disturbing to Dawg fans.

1. If I’m not mistaken, UGA is the most profitable football program. They generate more revenue other than Texas.

2. More Georgia High School players end up playing in the SEC. Our state produces the most SEC players than any other state.

3. Now this news comes out. Top 10 in attendance. Hell we would be #1 if we had a bigger stadium.

With all this said, all we have is 2 SEC Championships. Don’t get me wrong, we should be very proud of this. But it honestly isn’t enough. All loyal fans need to realize this.

Georgia had some bad luck in Richt’s two best years at UGA. Georgia went 13-1 in 2002, the same record that Florida had in both of it’s championship seasons. Georgia had two losses in 2007, the same number of losses as LSU the year it won the national title with Les Miles. Auburn should have a crystal ball too but technically they don’t. Georgia will be fine this season and for seasons to come. Just need a little luck on our side to win a crystal ball. When you have averaged 9 wins in the past 2 years and they were Richt’s worst 2 seasons, I’d say your program is in great shape.

And yet Miles has won a NC. Richt problem is inability to run up a score for “style points” you need now to get it. Richt wants to play the “Gosh Aww Shucks let me be your BFF” way to much in games. NO Killer Instinct.

Bill, This is good info. I don’t see any problems in the top 10. I don’t think Alabama belongs in the
top 20, nor does Notre Dame. Bama’s record from 2000-2007 was 47-30 I think and they have had
to vacate 21 of those wins (2005-2007) due to their most recent NCAA sanction regarding the
textbook sales.

Thankfully for UGA, things went so well for so long that a hiccup brings focus on the processes and practices of the present to re-evaluate where we are and what we are doing.

Tech’s 18 ranking comes as a surprise, but speaks well of their efforts. The ACC with 5 of the top 25 compares favorably with PAC-10 and BIG-10+1. The BIG 12 ( big 2 + 10 dwarfs ) pales in comparison.

The SEC is still shown to be the cream of the crop with 3 of the top 10, and with 6 of the top 25.

….but we all knew that.

Lets look at this year folks. We got Ark, Miss St. and Auburn in he west. All of them are beatable obviously. The east SC, Vandy we should roll. UK-u know we wanna stomp their hind ends. UT-is at home and its our turn to win. Florida-tell them the game is in Gainesville and hope they don’t show. So that leaves non confernce door mat Louisiana lite, Eye da ho state and Colorado-we gotta go to Boulder but hey they suck. Don’t forget the given W against the nerds. So I got us at 11-1 with Florida losing 2 Alabama & LSU and us repping the East.

It’s obvious that Alabama made the top 25 because of its National Championship last year and the Crimson Tide should continue to do extremely well. That said, I can’t see Notre Dame on this list, much less Georgia Tech.

I agree that the last two years have been hiccups for the Dawgs. With the change at defensive coordinator UGA should be able to regain its position at the top of the SEC. Development of a quality QB this year will also help the cause.

With the financial strength, attendance, quality of facilities and university, Georgia should always lead the SEC.

Hey LSUnAtlanta….Les Miles is your problem…do you honestly think LSU will win another NC with him as coach?..he’s a goofball and has lucked into the success he has had to this point.Every year the LSU program under achieves. With the talent they sign they should win the SEC West every year..but are outcoached in at least 2-3 important games each season. You need to worry about your program…I see it declineing very fast with Miles as your coach…if you want to point fingers go point them at your own football program….Can You Dig It!

Chuy……what are you talking about?

1) UGA has the most profitable Athletic Department, it doesn’t differentiate for specific sports.

2) Yes Georgia has more kids playing in the SEC, but we all know Florida has more D1 prospects……..not that it matters because we all know the best HS players in this state can and do compete at the highest level.

3) UGA has won 2 SEC titles in CMR’s 9 years and you complain it isn’t enough….do you forget what conference we play in?
No one in the East has won more SEC titles since Mark Richt showed up @ UGA and only LSU has more…..
LSU – 3
UGA -2
Florida – 2
Auburn – 1
Alabama – 1

Sometimes I think people complain , because they have nothing else to do.
I will tell you what is really disturbing, is UGA fans who rip our coach for not winning enough, when he is the winningest coach in UGA history……We hold up Dooley like he was some Southern Football God, and the man averaged 8 wins a year and and SEC Title every 4 1/2 years….Without the 3 Herschel years , Dooley averaged 7.5 wins a year, and it took him 17 years to win the National Title, and without Herschel , that would have never happened.

1970 Dawg,

The 2000-2006 debacle was bad but this was the worst period ever in Bama football history and makes this decade probably the worst in our history. Even with that thrown in we still rated 12th for the decade. You guys had probably your best decade ever in your history. The point is that even when we are at our worst and you are at your best you were barely better than us. You rated 8th and we rated 12th.

Of course its always convenient to pick a point in time so now I guess I’ll pick my own point in time rather than live in ancient Mike Shula history. Let’s look at even more recent history like the recent 5 year period 2005-2009. U believe Georgia is a .500 team in its own division at 10-10 in the sec east. Bama has 2 division titles in that span, an sec title and national title, and 10, 12, and 14 game winning seasons.

The more recent 5 year history is more telling than seasons that happened 8-9 years ago. There’s really not much difference between what happened 8-9 years ago and what happened in the 90s. Or should we throw in the 90s since that was when the 2 division format was implemented. Nope. WHy? Because throwing in that lost decade of Georgia football really makes you look really, really bad.

1970dawg, just go ahead and pick 2000-2009 timeframe since its the only point in football history with which you can make some semblance of an argument you were worth a hoot. Just pick the point in time that happens to coincide with Zook at Florida and Bama being on the 2nd worst probation ever handed down. Me? Well, I’ll choose not to live in the past and focus on the present.

just sayin

hey squirrelly, Meyer has done in 5 years in the SEC whats taken Richt 9 and Saban has won 2 divisions in 3 years. It just shows you can make stats say anything you want. Frankly, I hope CMR stays forever.
