Are Dawg fans’ BCS title hopes for 2011 realistic?

When will Mark Richt get to hoist one of these crystal babies like Nick Saban? Or will he? (Associated Press)

When will Mark Richt get to hoist one of these crystal babies like Nick Saban? Or will he? (Associated Press)

It’s that time of year between signing day and the beginning of spring practice when college football fans look ahead with optimism. That certainly applies in the Bulldog Nation, where many, if not most, fans appear to have concluded that the 2010 season will see an improvement in the Dogs’ on-field performance. A frequent refrain I’m hearing is that 10 wins, at least counting the bowl if not in the regular season, doesn’t seem out of reach, even with all the questions surrounding this team.

And if you then look ahead to 2011, with a year of experience at QB and the new defensive scheme established and battle-tested and a fairly advantageous schedule, well, the sky seems to be the limit in many fans’ estimation.

Yes, just three months after the debacle that was the game against Kentucky, some Dogs fans are daring to think BCS national championship in 2011. We’re nothing if not resilient. (Or deluded, I’m sure Bama and Florida fans will say.)

One of those true believer Dawg fans recently raised the issue with Olin Buchanan, college football senior writer, asking him when he saw Georgia winning another national championship. “I’m hoping 2011 is our year,” the fan added.

After retracing Georgia’s history winning national titles and having some years where a catch or two might have provided the opportunity for another, Buchanan didn’t exactly give the fan the answer he was hoping for.

“Most championship teams have strong defenses and reliable, experienced quarterbacks,” he noted. “This past season, Georgia had neither. Junior Logan Gray and redshirt freshmen Aaron Murray and Zach Mettenberger will compete to be this fall’s starting quarterback. We’ll have to see if one emerges as a reliable passer. Meanwhile, coordinator Todd Grantham was brought in to bolster a defensive unit that was the third-most generous in the SEC last season. Can he rebuild that unit back to usual SEC standards? Again, we’ll see.”

When do you see the Dogs winning the SEC and national championships again?

View Results

Loading ... Loading ...
His conclusion? “The good news for Georgia is that the program isn’t in crisis. Certainly, Georgia expects more than the eight wins it posted this past season, but that at least is a respectable showing. Still, there are too many questions at this time to project the Bulldogs as serious national championship contenders in two years.”

So how do you feel about Georgia’s prospects? Is a 10-win season this year the minimum you would find acceptable? Do you really think the Dogs, probably minus A.J. Green, can surpass Florida and Alabama out of the SEC and become a BCS championship contender in 2011? If not then, when? On the latter point, feel free to vote in the poll and share your thoughts in the comments.

Call It Like It Is …the article is about 2011….moron! 38 Yardline Dawg Saban has the “blog police” at Bama? Dude you think this article is warming the heart of CMR and the UGA coaching staff..please!

I dont even have to read this article to know what to say….reading it would be like listening to that annoying girl talk that just loves to talk to hear her own voice.

The Bulldogs will be lucky to win 8 games next year, and will not ever have a legitiment shot at the BCS as long as things are being done the way they have been the last nine years,,,just good enough to get the daily fan to smile….but always outshined by LSU, Florida, and now Alabama and Tennessee have to be added.

THE PROGRAM IS IN A VERY CLEAR AND OBVIOUS DECLINE SO IF YOUR ARGUING ANY IMPROVEMENT IN 2011 IT JUST SHOWS YOUR NOT A REAL FAN….real Georgia fans who keep up with recruiting and press conferences know we are screwed!

Beat Florida and win the SEC in the same year. The rest will take care of itself.

2010 we must beat SC, Aubie, KY and MSU on the road and Ark, UT and Vandy at home and Florida in J’ville. Tough sledding with a RS freshman QB.

I disagree with you bulldawg about Murray. He is not Joe Cox made over. He has a lot more athletic ability. He will remind you more of Shockley than Greene. Mett is Stafford with better mechanics. Gray will NEVER play QB as a starter at UGA.

Realistically, UGA will drop at least 1 game away from home with SC being the tone-setter for the entire season. Arkansas is beatable if we run the ball and keep Mallet off the field. MSU will be tough at their place but they are a couple of years away from being an 8 win team under Mullen.

Florida game comes down to the mindset more so than the talent. Do we think we can win? That’s coaching and motivation.

Brad really dude where were you in 07? Don’t let facts get in your way..if your a “real fan” God help the Bull Dog Nation…I’m not talking a NC in 2010 or 2011 too much luck of the draw..however if your that upset with the program I hear the Bug Village is taking folks now that the bandwagon has stopped.

I don’t believe 29% state no National championship until Mark Richt leaves. Do we have that many stupid Bulldog fans? He is definitely been a consistent winner since being at Ga. He is definitely one of the 20 best college coaches in the nation. Even if he is number 20, How many fans think we could get one of the top 19? National Championship in 2011? Too early to tell. One of our QB’s will have to prove they will be better than Joe Cox. Joe was barely an average SEC QB. 9 wins this year counting the bowl game and 11 wins in 2011 are possible. crankytigerman

The Gators’ run is over! The Dawgs are taking control of the SEC east this year, and the new Georgia D will shut down the Florida offense, which lost all their top talent!!!! Brantley? Get real—the Dawg 3-4 D will eat him alive. Tennessee? Get out of town–they don’t have anything! Georgia beats florida and tennessee easily, goes 11-1 and plays USC for the title!!!

how2fish….I did watch the SC Bowl game and they clearly didn’t want to be in the cold. Yes they got out coached too but there were lot of dropped balls in that game as well. You must remember it was SC, a team that UGA always struggles with while other SEC Elite teams which may have a close game with now and then but usually will beat the crap out of them. What is really funny is when UGA struggles with Vandy,Kentucky and SC while getting blown out by the Bama’s ,Florida’s and Tennessee’s and the fan base thinks its a real football power.

UGA will win it all in 2010 & 2011.

100 yard Rusher–Richt is 40-3, that’s a 13-0 or 12-1 season every year

Ealey is getting 5.7 ypc.

Get him 25 touches a game, and UGA goes 14-0 in 2010 & 2011.

The defense will likely hold opponents to under 20 & 300 yards of offense per game as an average. Richt wins 90% of those games when that happens.

In his spare time, he’s practicing holding up the big crystal ball before the cameras to be ready for the big moment, which is bound to happen soon!!!! He’s pure genius, and thinks of everything!

No way! One of the reasons that I failed to renew my four (4) season tickets which I’ve had since 1980 was the downward spiral on which UGA has been the past several years. Even if they do get lucky as UT did in 1998, the reward isn’t worth the time and money wasted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Keep in mind that Florida had one loss every year they went all the way. LSU had one in 2003 and 2 in 2007. Mark Richt has had two or three teams who could’ve been in the NCG with a break or two. However, in the words of Kurtis Blow, “these are the breaks.” Two disappointing years do not a bad coach make, and things have a way of turning around quickly in college football. Having said that…
LSU is a recruiting juggernaut. Florida is Florida. Bama is Bama. Arkansas and Auburn are building momentum. Ole Miss is winning under Houston Nutt. Tennessee is the wild card of the bunch; we’ll have to see how their coaching change pans out. So…
At this point, the only teams that I can definitively say Georgia is ahead of are Vandy, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Mississippi State. South Carolina returns just about everybody, and the coaches at the other three aren’t exactly shabby. This ain’t your daddy’s SEC.
I have been consistently critical of Bobo’s playcalling. I was also critical of Richt’s at times, as well. Too many long bombs that go incomplete when the running game is working; too many telegraphed screen passes on first down that go for negative to minimal gains; too many holding penalties that put us in a hole or negate big plays. The defense’s woes have been well documented so I won’t even go into that. Are the problems fixable? Absolutely. Will they be fixed? Who knows. Time will tell the tale, but I’m not giving up hope just yet.

Oklahoma Dawg……..You are on the money when you say ” we are loaded with experienced talent ” It does however remain to be seen, will we have the “it” factor. The “it” factor being that special attitude that “we can beat anyone anytime anywhere ” Personally, I wont go so far as to predict championships quite yet, but I do see something special going on in Athens Ga.. If we can get past those first few critical games, including South Carolina, and Arkansas, then and only then will you here me talking championship……..because by that time, if we win those games, I believe we will be on our way to having the “it” factor………Winning creates more winning, just look at history. GO DOGS!!!! GATA!!!

February 23rd, 2010
12:34 am

The defense should come out of the gate in September like gangbusters, The new 3-4 is much easier to convert to when you have been playing “bend don’t break” defense. We do have some flat-out studs that will be chomping at the bit to rip some heads off, when given the chance. Contrary to some opinions, the 3-4 is a whole lot more fun, and when these college kids are having fun, watch out !! At the very least, the UGA defense should have that ” Junkyard Dog ” swagger in short order. I am just hoping the offense can produce early, if they do……..Well……..we’ll see…GO DOGS !!

As a UGA fan/alum im disappointed by how terrible we evaluate talent on offense, how can we red-shirt knowshon and play Marlon Brown for 3 catches. Richt moves players around to different positons like musical chairs, and if I was a recruit I would be confused when I found out that I will be coach by Bryan McClendon, a wide receiver, is Running Backs’ Coach. John Lilly, a quarterback, is our Tight Ends’ Coach. Tony Ball, a Running Back, is our Wide Receivers’ Coach.

The Watergirl. You are right. Our Offense is a TOTAL MESS.

RED DOG 77. You are WRONG.

Coach Richt has LOST 14 games now the past 4 years in a row.

Coach Jim Donnan LOST 13 games his last 4 years in a row and we FIRED HIM FOR IT.

March 2010. Last time Coach Richt beat a Top 10 Final AP Poll team Nov 2006.

He beat # 9 Final AP Poll Auburn November 2006.

He beat # 6 Final AP Poll LSU in 2005.

Coach Richt declared that HE KNOCKED THE LID OFF THE GEORGIA BULLDOGS’ FOOTBALL PROGRAM by beating # 4 Final AP Poll Tennessee vols in 2001.

He did ?

Let’s look at his 2001 season, please shall we to see if he KNOCKED THE LID OFF THE GEORGIA BULLDOGS’ FOOTBALL PROGRAM, or NOT ?

UGA Ended up ranked # 22 in the Final AP Poll 2001.

LOST to Boston College # 21 in the Final AP Poll 2001.

LOST to South Carolina # 13 in the Final AP Poll 2001.

LOST to Florida # 3 in the Final AP Poll 2001.

LOST to 7-5 Auburn UNRANKED Final AP Poll 2001.

BEAT 8-5 Georgia tek # 24 Final AP Poll 2001.

BEAT # 4 Final AP Poll Tennessee 2001.

2001 (1) LOST 1 SEC NEUTRAL FIELD game

2001 (2) LOST 2 SEC HOME games at Sanford.

2001 (3) LOST to 3 SEC teams, none at their stadium.

2001 (4) LOST 4 games while Miami of Florida LOST 0.

2001 (5) LOST to Florida.

2001 (6) LOST to 1 UNRANKED Top 25 Final AP Poll team.

2001 (7) Played a CRAPPY Opponent in a bowl game.

2001 (8) Failed to beat Florida & vols in the same year.

THAT is KNOCKING THE LID OFF THE GEORGIA BULLDOGS’ FOOTBALL PROGRAM to beat # 4 Final AP Poll Tennessee vols in 2001 ?

That is what Coach Richt said.

It was music to our ears in 2001. It was what we wanted to hear way back then 10 years ago, now.

Whose players was it that WON that game, Coach Richt’s Recruits or Jim Donnan’s Recruits ?

We have averaged 3 and a half LOSSES per year for the last 4 years in a row and COUNTING.

That is 14 LOSSES the last 4 years in a row, now.

That is with Matthew Stafford, AJ Green and Knowshon Moreno.

Jim Donnan’s last 4 years in a row, he only LOST 13 games.

14 LOSSES Coach Richt his last 4 years now.

13 LOSSES Jim Donnan his last 4 years in a row.

Coach Richt now 10 years later after Coach Richt said, that HE KNOCKED THE LID OFF THE GEORGIA BULLDOGS’ FOOTBALL PROGRAM in 2001 beating # 4 Final AP Poll Tennessee vols 26-24 on the hobnail boot; Who is now 10 years later drinking this KOOL-AID ?

UGA leads the nation in arrests/suspensions in 2001 to 2010 Coach Richt Era.

February 23rd, 2010
4:59 am

We had 21 LOSSES the last 9 years of Vince Dooley.

We had 21 LOSSES 9 years Wally Butts 1940-1948.

We had 27 LOSSES the last 9 years of Coach Richt.

1-Loss or 0-Loss vs The SEC in Coach Richt Era :

3 Florida 2009, 2008, 2006

2 Alabama 2009, 2008

2 Auburn 2005, 2004

1 Ole Miss 2003

1 LSU 2003

1 UGA 2002 only, 9 years ago now Jim Donnan’s recruits

0 hope that we will do anything in The SEC this year either.

Right ? Or, wrong that we have 0 hope in SEC this year ?

What I love are the posters who run in here and regurgitate that in the Coach Richt Era, his record on Opponent’s Field is more wins in The SEC than any other SEC team.

Read that to mean that they do not want you to discuss

# 1 what Coach Richt’s Record in The SEC is at HOME

# 2 what Coach Richt’s Record in The SEC is on Neutral Fields

# 3 what Coach Richt’s Record in The SEC is altogether

RED DOG 77 says no one can come in here and point out these FACTS.

That no one is a Bulldog fan who does face up to what we in FACT are.

That he doesn’t read it.

You know why ?

Because RED DOG 77 doesn’t want to know.

Because RED DOG 77 thinks if he HIDES THE FACTS that it will help in the recruiting, but the recruits KNOW what the FACTS are on UGA. Do you believe they do ? Or believe they do NOT and that by HIDING THE FACTS, that they WILL NOT FIND OUT the FACTS ?

Because RED DOG 77 thinks if he HIDES THE FACTS that it will make the players on the team feel more positive about themselves. Heaven forbid our players should actually play a HOME game at UGA and feel like they NEED to DO A LOT BETTER THAN THEY HAVE BEEN at HOME. Heaven forbid our players should actually play a game on a NEUTRAL FIELD and feel like they NEED to DO A LOT BETTER THAN THEY HAVE BEEN on NEUTRAL FIELDS.

Let’s all treat the recruits and the players on our team like Mushrooms and keep them in the dark and feed them B.S.

Act like EVERY Recruit considering UGA and act like EVERY Player for UGA ever is a total dumb slit.

You can’t talk about our Offense. You can’t point out for 4 years in a ROW on Offense now, we have led the ENTIRE NATION in penalties, for 4 years in a ROW on Offense now, we have led the ENTIRE NATION in fumbles, for 4 years in a ROW on Offense now, we have led the ENTIRE NATION in interceptions.

And, that all we have this year is 3 Freshmen Quarterbacks, none of whom has EVEN THROWN A PASS.

Very interesting stats on odds to win MNC. So UGA plays only one team with a better chance to win it all (Florida). What happened to Georgia Tech?

BuLLdawg, you might as well give up these win starved puppies who cannot even consistently beat mediocre teams at home (vandy, ky). The only thing they have going for them is Hershel, Larry Munson and Vince Dooley from the old days and they are in a time warp and think last year was 1980.
