Dogs could benefit from schedule in 2010

Georgia's schedule finally breaks Mark Richt's way. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Georgia's schedule finally breaks Mark Richt's way. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Over the past two seasons, as the Dogs were trying to survive absolutely killer schedules, I kept looking ahead at the 2010 and 2011 schedules and thinking that if Mark Richt could solve his defensive problems and find a quarterback, he’d be looking at a definite window of opportunity.

The rotation of SEC West teams that the Dogs face definitely turns advantageous this season (no Bama or LSU) and the most challenging opponent on the nonconference schedule looks to be our in-state rival.

CollegeFootballNews.com is thinking along the same lines. In doing their roundup of the SEC composite schedule for 2010, they see Georgia’s “realistic best case record” as 11-1, the “worst case” record as 7-5 and peg the Dogs’ “likely finish” at 10-2.

Their summary paints a pretty optimistic scenario: “Georgia won’t be the best team in the SEC, but it has the schedule to look that way. Any SEC East team worth its salt would take this slate in a heartbeat. There’s no Alabama or LSU to deal with, Florida, as always, is at a neutral site, Tennessee is a home game, and the road games are at South Carolina, Mississippi State, Kentucky, and Auburn. Throw in a home date against Vanderbilt and anything less than a New Year’s Day bowl appearance will be a mega-disappointment. Even the nonconference schedule works out well with the Georgia Tech game at home and the one tough road trip at Colorado. On the negative side, the game against the Buffs is coming off a road trip to Mississippi State for the only back-to-back road games of the year, and the week off doesn’t come until late November.”

One caveat: CFN also predicted a 10-2 finish for the Dogs in 2009.

And, of course, that neutral site for the Florida game hasn’t proved very helpful for the Dogs in recent years. Plus, under Richt the Dogs actually play better on the road than at home. But a return to New Year’s Day certainly does seem within this team’s grasp. Let’s face it, if they hadn’t blown it against Kentucky last year, they still probably would have played on Jan. 1.

So what do you think? Will anything less than the Outback or Capitol One be a “mega-disappointment” this season? Or is CFN underestimating the rebuilding Richt faces this year?

SUCCESS AT THE CHARITY STRIPE

The men’s basketball Bulldogs aren’t there yet, but the team definitely has improved since Mark Fox came to town, especially in one aspect of the game: free throws.

The Athens Banner-Herald takes a look at that improvement, which sees the dogs leading the SEC by making 72.7 percent from the free-throw line heading into tonight’s game in Knoxville. That’s up from the 63.8 percent they shot last season (which ranked 297th in the nation out of 330 Division I teams) and is on pace to be the team’s best percentage from the foul line since 2001-02, when the Bulldogs converted 73.7 percent of the time, the ABH says. Under Dennis Felton, Georgia never shot better than 67.9 percent.

Travis Leslie, for example, has improved from shooting 57.5 percent last season to 76.1 percent this year. The other Dogs have also improved.

Trey Thompkins, who leads the conference by making 85.7 of his free throws, tells the ABH, that the key to the turnaround is “we just shoot millions and millions of free throws. Once we’re done doing all the grinding in practice, we step up to the free-throw line and knock down free throws. You can’t leave unless you knock them down.”

I’ve never understood basketball coaches who don’t emphasize practicing free throws. It’s like a football coach who ignores the kicking game. Too many games are won or lost at the line.

This is just one more reason for Dogs basketball fans to be pleased with the Fox hire.

If you’re truly UGA fans as you so passionately state that you are, then to me you should be talking about how Rosie this season will be…a QB that not only knows, but can execute the entire playbook…10 offensive starters coming back…awesome receiving corps, outstanding pair of running backs…a coach who actually admits that he has been remiss in overseeing the coaching staff…a new coach on the D-side of the ball bringing new energy, excitement, and hope… start talking about the future and upcoming season; there will be plenty of time to tear the team, players, coaches apart once the season starts (LOL)…BTW, I am not a UGA fan, so to speak, but I do follow some of your players from Florida…oh yea, I’ve never been a coach, but did play two sports in college…in the words of Chad and Jeremy; “But that was yesterday and yesterday’s gone” …Kumbaya DAWG fans

The AP decided in 1992 who the NC was….correct?

the AP makes that decision based on submitted opinions of sportswriters….correct?

The NC that ALA was “awarded” by the AP is an opinion based NC. ALA didnt play a NC game….since there was none in 1992 as the supposed NC games didnt start until 1998….moron

It’s a sad commentary on any team when a fan is glad to see they have a favorable schedule. I want my Vols to have a tough schedule and come out on top. Play one of the toughest schedules in the country and win out, and then I’m impressed. It’s why I’ve always admired Pete Carroll and USC. The guy was willing to play anyone anywhere, and he delivered butt-whippings three time zones away.

I applaud Georgia for at least traveling out to Arizona State and Oklahoma State, but they make up for it with cupcake I-AA team. Many of the top BCS teams have had schedules in the past few years that high school teams would be ashamed to have. The voters need to penalize teams very heavily for doing it. Give me two teams in the same range rank-wise and I’m bumping up the one that plays a real opponent over the one that doesn’t… simply winning against creampuffs should not be enough to maintain a rank that’s based largely on where you start. The argument that ‘we’re in the SEC, it’s so tough’ is baloney. Some years it is, some it isn’t. It was full of mediocre teams this year and look how pathetic Florida’s schedule turned out to be. They finally faced a really good team and were completely unprepared.

Winning 10 games a year for nine years is great. Most teams have patsy one or two times a season to guarantee those 10 wins. Daugs had a schedule last year void of patsy and we all see how that worked out-they evidently have discovered the error of that and now have the “guarantee” built into the schedule. You agree?

The 2010 season is the one I’m looking forward to; you know why? AARON MURRAY! AARON MURRAY! I yelled all season long to start Aaron Murray over Joe Cox but Mr Richt inability to understand these kids abilities decided to start Cox.

If Aaron Murray stays healthy the whole season the Dogs will win the sec and possibly the nc and he win be in the run for the heisman trophy. This is how much confident i have in this kid. He will average 300 yards passing per game. The sec are going to be in for a rude awakening. They won’t know what hit them when Aaron Murray light up the score board.

Our new defensive coordinator is preaching aggressive defense. That’s the way the state of ga kids plays; AGGRESIVE DEFENSE! Our kids are going to enjoy playing in Grantham’s aggresive defense. 2010 is going to be an exciting season.

I’m a huge GT fan and actually thought GA’s 2010 would really help them. But when I read that SC & Auburn (both teams should be better in 2010) are both on the road I kind of wonder? Other that GT, the OOC schedule is back to what it used to be … very weak. But, if FL & Bama are benefitting from these types of OOC schedules then why shouldn’t GA.

The Gamecocks always play the Dawgs with intensity and their fans always look forward to the Georgia game. In the end, I think UGA will pull it off but it will be interesting to see how a young quarterback and players in a new defensive scheme respond to an early-season challenge in a hostile environment. UGA fans have not experienced what its like to start basically a freshmen QB in the SEC. i expect UGA to make Defensive corrections, but hear me out. either aaron murray or Logan Gray is going to be making their first SEC start in a hostile Williams Brice Stadium, in only the 2nd game of the season. The south carolina fans can make it a hostile for any QB.

with USC’s offense improving, and alot of new additions to the running game and offensive line, South Carolina is not an easy win for UGA, and it never is. i just dont see UGA beating South Carolina this season, especially with an inexperienced Qb under center.

A football coach that “ignores” the kicking game? Who the heck does that……..the county rec league coaches?

And actually Fox attributes it to just teaching better mechanics, not shooting more. Felton didnt ignore that aspect, nobody does, just appearantly didnt have quite as good instructors.

But if the BB team can improve the FT percentage, that just tells you that it is possible to move the needle in areas previously thought to be just the way it was. Now if somebody could just apply that to the football penalties.

People are totally missing the point with this year’s schedule. It is NOT an easy schedule. It’s tougher than what 80% of the teams in the country will face. The Dawgs still face Florida, Tennessee, Auburn, Ga Tech, South Carolina, Arkansas, Miss State on the road, and they have a long road trip to Colorado the week right before the Tennessee game. Plus, even Kentucky has been a bowl team the last three years. There’s nothing easy about all that. It just happens to be less brutal than the schedules UGA faced he last two years. Anyone thinking that this year’s schedule is “easy” is really kidding themselves.

By the way, to you fans of other schools who (for some reason) LOVE to comment on Georgia stories… schedules in college FB are set up wayyyyyyyyyy in advance. So when you schedule a team, 3 or 4 years later when you play them, they may be way up or way down. Case in point: I believe Georgia scheduled Colorado in 2006, when they were still a strong Big 12 program. We scheduled Oregon in 2008 or 2009, and right now they are a top Pac 10 team. Are you Techies and others going to criticize UGA if, in a couple of years, we play a very average Oregon team? Probably… that’s why we don’t listen to you.

Sorry, the facts are that year in and year out, Georgia HAS HAD one of the TOP schedules in the country over the last 30 years. We’ve played teams from the ACC, Big 10, Big 12, Pac 10, etc. In the last 30 years, besides a couple of series with Notre Dame and a couple of random Auburn meetings, who has GT played? Samford? Memphis? Tulane? Western Carolina? Chattanooga? Furman? VMI? Indiana State? Citadel? Central Florida? New Mexico State? Navy? Syracuse? Sorry, Georgia Tech, not impressed. I’ll take Georgia’s games against Arizona State, Clemson, Oklahoma State, Boise, Oregon, Louisville, Colorado, etc. That’s a MUCH tougher schedule!

Georgia is recognized consistently as one of the top 15-to-20 football programs in the NATION, over the long haul, not an occasional flash-in-the-pan like one good year under Gailey, one good one under Pauls Johnson, etc. Glory glory to ol’ Georgia…. GO DAWGS! GATA!

And for those of you STILL debating who is better… 30-24, 8 out of 9, 15 of 19, 22 of 30, 60-37-5, etc.

Hey, volnation, the writers just said it’s POSSIBLE. Just as possible we go 4-8. However, not likely. Only question marks have are games vs. South Carolina, Tennessee, Florida and Auburn. Doubt we’ll lose all four. We’ll win the rest, including Ga.Tech, Colorado, etc.

If I were a betting man, I say we squeak past Carolina (always close games), win a thriller vs. Tennessee (sorry, we have more talent than you at this point), and probably lose a 24-21 game to Auburn and fall 28-17 to Florida.

But this is supposed to be a rebuilding year, anyway… I’ll take 10-2 after last year’s struggles. So, if the breaks go our way and we stay injury free, 11-1 IS a possibility.

What do you think UT will do with a rookie coach and losing a ton of talent? Plus all the offseason drama? Dooley will be a good caoch, but I see 7-5 this year, maybe 8-9 wins next year.

9-4 or maybe 10-3 is as good as anyone could possibly imagine.

1-Loss Year, that’s B.S. That would make us 13-1.

Review the games again please. Be realistic.

ARKANSAS : Ok, so Bobby Petrino lost both years to Florida and Alabama, well so did we or we certainly would have, given the opportunity. Georgia’s record is NO BETTER than Arkansas’ at 8-5 both of us. Ryan Mallett is 6’ 6” and 255 lbs. along with being the Best Quarterback on either UGA or Arkansas’ rosters. Cakewalk for UGA, that’s what I expect you all to say. Oh, and that I cannot say that this is just the type of game that UGA has LOST in the Coach Richt Era. In fact, in the Coach Richt Era, UGA has LOST to 8 teams not even ranked in the Top 25 Final AP Poll. Don’t give me this, this sets up well for UGA to be playing a better QB than we have coached around here in a long long long long time. Home Game. In the Coach Richt Era at HOME we have LOST to Tennessee vols half the time 2 times at HOME, LOST to LSU half the time at HOME, LOST to Auburn 2 times at HOME, LOST to South Carolina 2 times at HOME, heck we even LOST to Kentucky at HOME, LOST to Vanderbilt for God’s sake at HOME and LOST to Georgia tek at HOME. We also LOST to Alabama at HOME losing 31 to Nothing at HALF TIME when Alabama and Georgia were both ranked in the Top 5 in the country. But, Arkansas poses NO ISSUE and is an EASY WIN for UGA. Yeah, right.

MISSISSIPPI STATE : Every poster will say UGA win. Fine. I just point out to you that we LOST to Kentucky and to the vols in the season which just ended and both of those teams would have had a LOSING RECORD had they not both BEAT UGA. At Mississippi State. We LOST to Kentucky ON THE ROAD in Matthew Stafford’s great cough cough Freshman Year, an UNRANKED Kentucky team, but Mississippi State is just show up and collect the victory. Yeah, right.

COLORADO : Big XII team. Never mind they beat Texas A&M too, because UGA beat Texas A&M and therefore UGA is great. At Colorado State. Let’s see started the season against Big XII Oklahoma State who ended the season NOT RANKED in the Top 25 Final AP Poll, and even Houston beat Oklahoma State, but not UGA, not in the Coach Richt Era. Now, we travel to Colorado. Did I miss it or something or is there a recruit we got from Oklahoma which I maybe missed after our great showing out there in Big XII country Oklahoma State, scoring 10 points on them in total ? We beat Colorado by 1 point when we had to YANK Matthew Stafford and be saved by Joe Cox 14-13 but oh out there on the road against Colorado in the Big XII this assures UGA Bulldogs under Coach Richt a sure fire win. Cough Cough. You think we have that KILLER INSTINCT with Coach Richt. I know we do NOT.

TENNESSEE vols : Now we are having fun, right ? Kick their butts like we did last year. Ooops, sorry. Must have got the years mixed up there. Got the vols at HOME. That’s where we want them this year, right ? 8 years in a row, UGA has had the BETTER FOOTBALL TEAM than the vols. We LOST HALF those games 4. This one on the road. And, they came down here to Georgia and took their BEST RECRUITS from Georgia. Hmm. Obvious easy win for UGA on the road in Neyland Stadium. Never mind that UGA in the Coach Richt Era has LOST 12 times away from Sanford Stadium against The SEC. Never mind Coach Richt has taken the better team up there 4 times and LOST 2 already. And, the vols will not be getting all their guys arrested on Cumberland Boulevard on Felonies this year, not with Coach Dooley, the 1st Coach the vols have had in my lifetime who is NOT a total JOKE. Oh, yeah, mark this down on your calendar GUARANTEED WIN for UGA, right ?

VANDERBILT : at HOME. Oh, great. Vanderbilt cannot beat UGA not at our House. We had MATTHEW STAFFORD going against Vanderbilt at HOME and Vanderbilt was a 4-8 team. We BEAT Vanderbilt right ? No. Matthew Stafford scored 22 points against a 4-8 team who would have been 3-9 except to play our OFFENSE. Matthew Stafford scored 24 points against Vandie the next time Vandie came to town and we squeaked out that win, but that gets rid of the revenge avenging the LOSS at HOME to Vandie with Matthew Stafford as our Quarterback. Now, this season we have 3 MORE FRESHMEN QUARTERBACKS. Obviously, this is a game we can just mark it down too like all the others. NO WAY we LOSE to Vandie. Right ? 8 LOSSES in 9 years against UNRANKED teams NOT in the Top 25 Final AP Poll, but Vandie, just mark it down and move on in this discussion. Right ?

KENTUCKY : Oh, yeah, this is a really easy schedule for UGA 2010 Bill King, you blithering idiot. ON THE ROAD. That’s even better. I mean for God’s sake Coach Richt has ONLY LOST 12 GAMES IN THE SEC away from home. 12 LOSSES in The SEC alone in 9 years and let’s see Kentucky has already beat us up there. But, I am sure, we just mark this one down, right ? Cough Cough. Who was it who WON the game against Kentucky at our house just played ? Oh, that was Kentucky who BEAT us at OUR HOUSE and now we are going to Kentucky. We scored 27 points on Kentucky at our house and a 7-6 Kentucky BEAT UGA. Now, we go there and well we return 10 of our 11 LOSERS on OFFENSE. Should we just chalk this one up too as an EVIDENT WIN ? No problems with this cupcake schedule UGA has. Go undefeated. Win the National Championship. Win The SEC Championship. Should we just ignore Florida ?
