Bulldog Bites: Spring to-do list for UGA quarterbacks

Buck Belue has advice for Zach Mettenberger and the other Georgia QBs. (Bob Andres / AJC)

Buck Belue has advice for Zach Mettenberger and the other Georgia QBs. (Bob Andres / AJC)

Georgia QB-turned-sportscaster Buck Belue looks at the Dogs’ three-way spring competition for the starting quarterback’s job in his latest blog entry. Belue believes Mike Bobo will be thinking more bootlegs and roll-outs this year, which should suit two of the candidates, redshirt junior Logan Gray and redshirt freshman Aaron Murray. The other redshirt freshman, Zach Mettenberger, is more of a pocket passer.

Buck assesses what each of the candidates needs to do this spring:

The big thing for Gray, he says, “is proving he can be successful in the pocket, working the short to intermediate passing game.”

Mettenberger, who had troubles with accuracy and footwork in last year’s spring game but has pronounced himself “10 times better” this year, “gets downfield in a hurry. There is some zip on it,” Belue says. His estimation of what Mettenberger needs to show this spring: accuracy and handling the pass rush. “But if he’s 10 times better than last year, this will be something to see.”

As for the popular favorite to win the starting job, Belue says Murray “showed me last spring that he can stand in the pocket and wing it around and escape out of the pocket and make plays on the run. Throws a catchable ball. The thing with Aaron is just staying healthy. The last two years he’s had a broken leg and a bum arm.”

Belue says the best advice he can give the two younger quaterbacks is: “1. Step into the huddle and take charge. Project confidence. 2. Execute the offense. Limit the mistakes. Show them you are serious about winning.”

It should be an interesting G-Day.

One of the proposals unveiled this week by the NCAA’s Football Rules Committee (which still must be approved by the Playing Rules Oversight Panel) would require players who wear eye black to use solid black, with no words, logos, numbers or other symbols. That hasn’t been a really big deal with the Dogs, though Washaun Ealey did sport “I run this state” eye blacks in the Tech game. But it would have limited the Rev. Tim Tebow’s on-field ministry considerably. Interesting, though, that they waited until Tebow was gone to make this proposal.

The unconfirmed report in a Kansas paper this past week that the Big 10 was talking to Texas about switching over from the Big 12 isn’t taken seriously by many college football observers, but it has provided another opportunity for bloggers to engage in various unlikely what-if scenarios.

Coaches Hot Seat doesn’t see Texas making the move to the Big 10 but proposes that the conference should expand to 14 teams and suggests it poach Kentucky from the SEC as one of them. (Kentucky??!!)  In the wake of that, the Hot Seat suggests that Georgia Tech could return to the SEC to take the Wildcats’ place, a move that the blog says might make it an even better conference “and add the Atlanta TV market, which they already have a sizable hold over.” (Understatement alert: UGA owns the Atlanta TV market.) With the loss of Tech, the Hot Seat proposes the ACC merge with the Big East to form an “uber” conference of 18 teams.

It’s all nonsense, but fun nonsense. So I’ll throw out this question: If the SEC were to lose a team, which school would you like to see take its place?

The ninth-ranked Gym Dogs posted a big win over over No. 3 Arkansas Friday night at a pinked-out Stegeman Coliseum. The win, Georgia’s second, makes them 3-0 at home this season and improves their record to 3-3 overall. The meet with the Hogettes will be televised on a tape-delay basis at 9 p.m. on Feb. 20 on Fox Sports Net.

They shut down classes early over in Athens on Friday because of the snow, which meant one thing, The Red and Black reports: The dining halls had to remove all their trays to keep students from taking them as makeshift sleds. I’m sure the kids still found ways to amuse themselves. I remember one ice storm a few years back where the students took over Baxter Street and refused to allow any cars up the hill, pushing them backwards down the slick road. Ah, college life!

Miami…I’d like to see Miami in the SEC. Would love to travel there for a game. I know they don’t travel well but that’s OK.

“The South Shall Rise Again”

I like where you are going with your conference realignment idea. Though I have not yet researched the practicality of this idea, check out my proposal for a fantasy 14 team SEC Super Conference.

Drop Kentucky, keep Arkansas and add Texas, Virginia, and North Carolina. The old Confederate States of America is again united. Not for secession, but for to dominate the College Football Nation!

That is exactly the point that I’m trying to DRIVE HOME when I scream:

Recruit and coach up enough high quality O linemen and running backs to be able to establish a dominant running game FIRST. If you want a great passing game, you’ve got to have an even greater running game. When the defense has to adjust to stop the run, the great passing games will SHHHHHHINE!!!!

It is a MUST if we are SERIOUS about SEC and NATIONAL TITLES, but don’t take my word for it ask Coach Dooley!

Isn't it obvious...

Isn’t it obvious that you have to win the big games! You know, the games that UGA looses every year. Beat up on the chumps, raise the win total , but flop in the big games. This has to change, and lets hope that this is the year. There must be a clear cut QB coming out of the Spring Game. I think that by now Bobo knows who should be the starter, and needs to exert all of his effort to getting this person ready. With the schedule being so favorable, this should/could be the year.

I would like to see UGA be the lead dog and get an unubstructed view of top of the polls for a change.

Isn't it obvious...

Wouldn’t having to beat out the other guys BE the best way to get the eventual starter ready for the fall? The game is a competition after all. Even if he does know exactly who that should be, why would taking away the need to win the job, work to thier advantage. Not to mention, havent we learned that the second stringer needs to be able to do more than hold a good clipboard?

I have not turned against this football program. Far from it. I have if anything decided it is high time that we DO SOMETHING about the DECLINE in UGA Football on the OFFENSIVE SIDE of the football.

And, I will be damned if DISNEYdawg.com fans are going to come in here and tell me how great we are in 14-game seasons, averaging 10 wins.

“david green was a red shirt freshmen with upperclassmen on the line much like arron will have this year. murrey seems smart and is more mobile than greene was so i think arron has a great shot to win 10 or so games this year. uga will be just fine again.”

END QUOTE of B.S. about 8-4 David Greene’s Freshman Year 2001

LOST 2001 to South Carolina # 13. David Greene.

LOST 2001 to Florida. David Greene.

LOST 2001 to Auburn UNRANKED 7-5 team. David Greene.

LOST 2001 to Boston College # 22 otherwise aren’t ranked David Greene.

David Greene’s Freshman year, you seem to have forgotten altogether. We were UNRANKED in the Final ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll and in the AP Poll # 22 barely made the list. The win over what ended up Tennessee vols as # 4 in the nation was the ONLY WIN OVER A TOP 10 Final AP Poll Team in David Greene’s entire career. Then, he went to the NFL and stunk up every preseason game, and I do mean stunk it up. David Greene’s NFL career ended with him NEVER GETTING 1 SINGLE SNAP in the NFL. We read your B.S. about David Greene’s Freshman year and how you liken that to what Aaron Murray will do this year, summarizing that as we will be OK. Excuse me David Greene’s Freshman Year, our reward for that horrible season was the Music City Bowl, which we LOST.

We play 14-game seasons nowadays, and you think we will be just fine and the same as David Greene did his Freshman Year 2001 with 8 wins including the bowl game.

Bubba, we have another 8-win season this season in a 14-game season and Coach Richt can hit the road son.

Whether you join him or not, doesn’t matter to me.

February 15th, 2010 9:46 am

“joe felt like he had to try and make plays. cox did great with what he was working with.tru freshmen wouldnt have had that much sucess dealing with that. unless it was a matt stafford type freshmen.”

END QUOTE of B.S. by atl-xmen about Matt Stafford Freshman Season

LOST 2006 to vols, # 25 otherwise they aren’t ranked – obviously too. Stafford

LOST 2006 to Vandie UNRANKED a 4-8 team for God’s sake. B.S. Stafford

LOST 2006 to Florida, Matthew Stafford his Freshman Year scored 14 pts vs Florida

LOST 2006 to Kentucky UNRANKED Vandie and KY not good teams. Stafford

4 LOSSES AGAIN Matthew Stafford’s Freshman Year. In a 14-game Season, Matthew Stafford never got to play 14 games. That is because he was eaten alive by SEC East teams. Never got out of his own Division. Then, I come in here and you say, atl-xmen, that Matthew Stafford’s Freshman Season was great beyond all measure. LOSS to VANDERBILT and LOSS to KENTUCKY and LOSS to TENNESSEE vols and LOSS TO FLORIDA. The ONLY SEC East team Matthew Stafford beat in his Freshman Year was South Carolina, and he PROMPTLY corrected that the next year going out and LOSING TO South Carolina 12-16 to start the 2007 season and followed that right up with the LOSS to the Tennessee vols 2007 to make it 6 in a ROW SEC East teams who beat the crap out of Matthew Stafford. But, according to YOU atl-xmen, the way you recall 2006 Matthew Stafford’s freshman season, his 4-LOSS SEASON is better than what you expect of Aaron Murray you say for this season because, well, no one can go out his Freshman Year and have the kind of year that Matthew Stafford had his freshman year for UGA. Again, Matthew Stafford had UGA ranked # 23 in the Final AP Poll 2006 his Freshman Year. And, our reward for that horrible season was the Peach Bowl.

Lions are the worst franchise in the NFL because they do know NOTHING about football.

13 Touchdown Passes Matthew Stafford

20 Interceptions Mattew Stafford

4 Fumbles Matthew Stafford

61 Quarterback Rating Matthew Stafford

And, you quote to me Detroit about how ready for the NFL Matthew Stafford was, when I say as plainly as it can be said that Matthew Stafford was NOT PREPARED by UGA for the NFL with his 51 Interceptions and Fumbles here at UGA to only his 51 Touchdown Passes. I watch him now and he slings the ball off his back foot, just like he did here.

“joe cox played fine last year considering what he had around him”

Insert as many excuses as a Pregnant Nun for us 1 time starting 1997 not being ranked Final AP Poll Top 25 and it Joe Cox last year only.

Which is it ?

1.Joe Cox was great; it was just the other 10 around him last year.

2.We return all 10 of those around him this season and they are GREAT.

February 16th, 2010
12:02 am

Joe Cox

5 years coached by Mike Bobo, 5 years :

31 rushes minus 28 yards 0 touchdowns rushing

13 games 15 Interceptions

We intercepted 10 by comparison with an all senior backfield

Scoring Joe Cox 0

Starter all 13 games scored 0 points as QB for The University of Georgia, -0-

Our Opponents had more TD passes, more completions, higher completion percentage, for more yards, and for more yards per completion, and a higher passing efficiency rating than did Joe Cox.

UGA All Purpose Yardage Leader was a return man because Joe Cox could NOT distribute the football.

Oklahoma State he scored 10 points against. 10. Not ranked Top 25 Final AP Poll

LSU 13 points he scored. LSU beat not 1 Top 25 team, but they damn sure beat Joe Cox.

Tennessee Joe Cox scored 19 points vs 7-6 vols who otherwise have LOSING RECORD.

Florida Joe Cox scored 17 points. Alabama slaughtered them, but we could do nothing.

Kentucky another 7-6 UNRANKED team who otherwise also has a LOSING RECORD Joe Cox lost to.

105 Penalties for 878 yards, the Offense was 1st and 15 every game

23 Fumbles by us with Joe Cox as QB. When we didn’t fumble or penalty, we threw interception.

And, you and AltamahaDawg come running in here to tell all the rest of us how Great Joe Cox was.

You are not yanking my chain; you are making a complete fool of yourselves in public about which you 2 want to talk about. I don’t blame Joe Cox dumbslits, I blame Mike Bobo and Coach Richt. Can you both be that stupid ? Don’t answer that question. Plead the 5th.

atl- xmen…….I have spent some time now reading the posts from the last 24hrs. I have to tell you my friend, you have earned my respect with your posture, and mature approach in defending CMR, CMB, and indeed, the University of Georgia football program. Bravo, my fellow BULLDOG ! Keep one thing in mind: You hit the nail on the head……Mr. BuLLdawg or Yella Fella as I like to call him is pretty transparent, GT nerd through and through…….And while I dont personally engage in the bathroom wall ‘crap sling’ he and others like him participate in,……..I certainly like your moxie ! Keep up the good work ‘atl-xmen’ , as some who come here think he is a BULLDOG……..and that is not helping us……….To others reading this post, support ‘atl-xmen’ and others like him, continue to expose those who would use our good name to attempt to hurt our UGA football program………And most importantly, put those big ol G stickers on your bumpers and back windshields, wear your RED and BLACK, and support our GEORGIA BULLDOGS !!!! Looking forward to a great 2010 season ! GO DOGS….GATA !!!

Yes, and tell everyone that UGA has been better than Florida in the Coach Richt Era.

We ain’t going to allow anyone to say otherwise.

February 16th, 2010
6:15 am

3 OL recruited 2010 by Coach Richt 1 # 90 in the country another recruited injured.

3 OL recruited 2009 by Coach Richt 2 are not considered that great coming in.

3 OL recruited 2008 by Coach Richt 1 again not considered great coming in.

8 OL recruited 2007 by Coach Richt 2 are JUCO gone now, 2 more from Hargrave Military School with grades issues of which 1 got a snap in only 2 games all season last year Harden, another who is ranked # 71 in the country who misses run block after run block, another who has taken a snap in only 14 of 39 games since he was recruited and didn’t play all of those 14 games in other words took a snap in less than a third of the games since he was recruited, another not considered that great who has only seen a snap in 13 of the 39 games and only started 3, another Chris Little who never took 1 snap not 1 and left the program the same week Coach Richt announced 2 others had left for off-field arrests/suspensions of which Coach Richt has had WAY TOO MANY OF, and so there you have your salvation, your great OL line class of 2007. Of the 8, only 5 remain and then you redshirted 1 of the 3 from 2008 giving you 6 Juniors this coming season on the OL. Now, you know who they are.

5 OL recruited by Coach Richt 2006 and yet we only have 3 Senior OL this coming season. Of the 5 one was ranked better than # 90 in the country. 1. And, of course Boling was arrested/suspended for the Opening Game the year before last.

1 OL recruited by Coach Richt 2005 Ian Smith who was not considered that great.

2 OL recruited by Coach Richt 2004 and 1 of those 2 was not considered that great, never got a start for UGA took a snap in only a couple of games and then quit the program after just 2 years.

What in the hell did you expect to have happen with this kind of recruiting 10 years into the Coach Richt Era now with this chronic recruiting for the OL.

I come in here and say how poorly we have done at recruiting consistently for the OL for every year since 2001 when Coach Richt started this lack of OL at UGA a recurring theme never-ending. And, you ? You run in here and spin that into we didn’t have a good OL last year.

D.A. That is what I have been saying all along, only you use it as an EXCUSE.

Whose fault is it that we have recruited OL like this the entire Coach Richt Era ?

You can QUIT with the EXCUSES atl-xmen. There are no excuses for recruiting the OL like this over a 10-year Coach Richt Era.

AJC, how about some thought time to Richard Samuel in Grantham’s 3-4 def. LB position. 220, 4.4-4-5 40yd dash with an attitude. He was a beast LB in HS. Check out some of his footage, aka running backs going backwards after a Samuel hit. Look at the possibilities, AJC. I think that he will be exciting.

Someone needs to get back on their meds. Seriously soon.

Richt promoted Bobo and trained him so if there are deficiencies it falls back on Richt. If the team commits too many penalties, it falls back on richt.

Richt is under tremendous pressure to get things back to SEC champion level. My guess is that Murray gives us the best shot at doing that because he has the ability to run and throw and is someone who has shown the ability to overcome adversity(injuries).

I don’t see Gray staying at QB.

3- Gray
4- Mettenberger

I’d rather keep Kentucky (at least they keep the sec in the basketball conversation), but I’d trade them for va tech if we had to. Va Tech vs Tenn is big stuff up here in the TN hills.
Texas to the LIttlebig ten? Somebody’s blowin’ smoke AND smokin’ blow. If they do that we ought to give the state back to the Mexicans! Let the Littlebig 10 add notre dame and some big east school (Syracuse? – they suck enough) so they can at least have a conference championship.
