Big picture needed when it comes to UGA’s recruiting

Richard Samuel's move to linebacker is welcome news. (Georgiadogs.com)

Some final thoughts on signing day.

First, you don’t shake up a program by getting rid of nearly half the coaches without expecting some fallout like this. Yes, it would have been great to add some depth at wide receiver and cornerback, but it’s not like the cupboard was exactly bare after those Top 10 recruiting classes Mark Richt has had in recent years. If the Dogs are going to suffer any from this subpar recruiting season, it’ll probably be a year or so down the road. And, who knows, if Richt bounces back in terms of recruiting next year, this hiccup might not matter much at all.

Secondly, this class might not be as impressive on first appearance as Richt’s others, but it’s not too shabby. Had Da’Rick Rogers not bolted, this likely would have been graded a Top 10 class by at least some of the recruiting analysts.

And as has been pointed out by MrSEC and others, if you average those much-hyped star ratings for the players, Georgia’s class actually ranks very nicely. Using Rivals.com’s numbers, with a point assigned for every star, Georgia finishes second in the SEC with an average of 3.68 points per player, behind only Florida’s 3.89.

Does that actually mean anything? Well, probably as much as the star ratings themselves. But those fans looking for a silver lining at least have something to latch onto.

One more point about Da’Rick. You hear a lot of whispers about what really went into his defection and off-field concerns about him, but in the wake of his putting on the orange cap, all that sounds like the same sort of sour grapes that emanated from the other side last year when Marlon Brown pulled a similar 180 and signed with the Dogs. Let’s not stoop to that level. The kid had a change of heart. Leave it at that.

Oh, and the Georgia players promising to make him pay on the playing field ought to have kept such thoughts among themselves. If he burns one of them on a long scoring play, those taunts are going to look pretty silly.

What else can we take from Wednesday? Well, he’s not a signee since he was already on the team, but a lot of fans think the Dogs’ defense got a big addition with the announcement that running back Richard Samuel is switching to linebacker, as had been rumored for months. Samuel, who played LB in high school, will bring a lot of speed to that position, something Georgia needed.

As for Logan Gray deciding to stick at quarterback for spring drills, that’s not really surprising, although I’m in the camp that feels he’s basically delaying the inevitable and probably would be better off if he went ahead and switched positions and got in more work there. Still, there’s something to be said for having at least one quarterback who actually has taken snaps in some games. And there’s always the chance that Gray will rise to the occasion and prove us naysayers wrong.

I wouldn’t lay any money on that, but the competition surely won’t hurt Aaron Murray and Zach Mettenberger and might prove a plus.

It was mentioned the need to add depth at receiver…what is the status of Kris Durham coming off injury? Did he get a medical red shirt? Will he be in the mix next year?

Question for the Gator Nation: Will Urban coach from his bedroom in rehab or sometimes appear at practice?
I think Urban needs peace and solitude so as to renergize his batteries. Poor guy.

Who wil be his repalcement come Fall?

Bill, I live in Calhoun and saw Da’rick play 4 times this year. And I want stoop to the whole he was paid by the nance family to get their son a scholarship theory, basically because I have no proof. However, the character issue is very legitimate and not sour grapes to the people who live in this small northwest GA town and know his story. Rogers was kicked out of the Darlington school for poor grades and behavioral issues. That is an absolute fact. I saw him live in the first game against Dalton get two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. One for taking his helmet off after scoring a touchdown, and after coaches had already warned him about it. The other penalty was for arguing with ref’s. Those are facts. He missed an entire week of school leading up to signing day. Hell his own coach admitted as much when quizzed by reporters about Rogers college choice. He left his head coach who had mentored him for two years in the dark about his decision. Classy. This guy is trouble and even if he goes to UT, which is questionable at the moment because of grades, I predict that he will have a much higher chance of being a bust than a star. Dooley is getting himself a handful.

ToccoaDawg We will see if 1) UT is not on probation vis a vi the Lammer year..2) he can get into school 3) he can stay in school 4) he is good enough that Coach Dooley will play him. If all those are Yes answers then the answer to your query is also Yes he can take a hit from a UGA saftey…..at least once!

Future is very bright dawgfans! This season should be better than last season..theres no doubt in my mind that we will be playing top notch football, we are young on defense with mostly soph’s starting but they are very bright and experienced and im confident that grantham can make them 10x better..Here’s sort of prediction of the starting d. D-line Justin Houston at d-end, “Big 6-6 300 lb.” Kwame Geathers at d-tackle, Montez Robinson d-end. Linebackers- Olb’s(Alec Ogletree & Christian Robinson) Ilb’s( Daryll Gamble & Marcus Dowtin) Branden Smith and Brandon Boykin at each corner spot with Jakar Hamilton & Bacarri Rambo at the safety spots.

Of all the Recruits this year. I am really looking forward to watching zander Ogeltree. A 2 star recruit according to the experts, yet the heart of a beast. Isnt that what they said about Terry Hoage?

Bill, the best way to rate recruits to me is to see who else wanted them. If it was ‘Bama, Florida, FSU, Miami, Auburn, etc. then we landed a good one. If we beat out Vandy, Duke, Kentucky, or Wake Forest than the recruit was less than blue chip. That’s the best star rating I know.

I like our class a lot. When you consider the coaching change and how it effected a few kids we are fine. We didn’t lose anyone recruited by our current staff. The ones we lost were projects of the dismissed. I would trade a top notch DC as we have now for a few drama cases any day!

I like the kids that want to be at UGA. Looking forward to a rebound yeart in 2010. If Metz or Murray can come through at QB we will be fine. The running game should take a little pressure off them. The D line will be a concern but some up and comers will hopefully fill in. Go DAWGS! 30-24

Walkermuhdawg where did you get that info. marlon brown was a last minute switch. he said flat out he was going to tennessee until Ed Orgeron cussed in front of his grandmother, and grandma then told Marlon he would not be attending UT.

I am looking forward to this year, the offense is loaded, and the D is going to be the agressive hard hitting type D that UGA fans love. Can’t wait to see Alec Ogletree, Mike Thornton and TJ Stripling laying some lumber out there. Plus what a safety tandem of the Hitman (Hamilton) and Rambo.

I think the two sleepers of this years class will be Zander Ogletree and Lonnie Outlaw. May be a year for Zander and two for Lonnie, but Zander has the heart of a lion, and Lonnie is a 6-7 football catching machine.

The thing about Marlon Brown was that he went public about Marlon’s grandmother wanting him to attend UGA. He was a Dawg committ all along, Kiffin just wanted him and played dirty when he couldn’t get him. It’s not easy to stoke the Vols fans simple minds and have them booing a kid for no good reason. This mess from Calhoun appears a mess on the surface but really, we don’t want guys that don’t want to be Dawgs. We will always be better off for not falling for these so called 5 star recruits with a 5 star attitude.

Da’Rick flipped because :

1. His best friend signed with Tennessee
2. He has a better shot starting as a Freshman with the Vols then the Dawgs
3. The 2009 UGA season

It would be nice to have a star incoming freshman receiver. Now’s the time to plan for the 2011 and beyond roster, when we won’t have AJ.

But a fresh injection of 3 and 4 star players (and some 2 star guys that the coaches evaluated and liked) is not a bad haul at all. I was worried we would whiff on both Whitaker and Thornton, and getting one of those two addresses an immediate need. Probably could have used some of those linebackers we were so close on getting. The news of Samuel’s switch will help us there.

Worries: 1) The resurgence in talent level at Auburn and Tennessee (helped by some coveted players out of Georgia). 2) Florida raising the bar again with their haul of dominant-looking players (such as the most impressive players of the all-star games), what people are calling one of the best recruiting classes ever.

Bottom line: it looks to me we’ve got the talent, and just as importantly, the coaching, to compete for the SEC in the coming years, if we can just manage to beat Florida.

robodawg, UGA’s not beating UF for 17 out of the last 20 has had nothing to do with talent on the field. Many of those UF victories came simply because the Gators were in their heads. Fix that and the series could flop back at any time.

Okay heres the summary of both quarterbacks.

Aaron
Murray-6′1 Mobile quarterback with pinpoint accuracy..played in a spread offense in high school.

Zach Mettenberger-6′5 more of a pocket passer with a cannon arm, played in a pro style offense in high school.

I’ve always liked murray better for some reason but as I evaluate the offense I think mettenberger should be the starter just because of how the offense will be more ground & pound, Then with mettenbergers arm it just seems like the right thing to do.

UGA nation have been fussing about the D so we got a new staff and recruited some of the best players on that side of the ball. I feel we filled all the holes we needed. I don’t care about the defection of Nickell…He was Sweet Willie’s boy and they say is only about 5′6″. Maybe 5′7″ in cleats. The only one I would have like to have seen sign is Jeff Whitaker. I don’t know how we didn’t get him. To lose him to Auburn really stung.

Mack Brown went 100 percent on official visits (25) and signings (25). Texas offered 30 scholarships, had 25 official visitors and signed all 25.
