Will Da’Rick Rogers see his shadow?

Will the recruitniks give Mark Richt a thumbs-up after signing day? (Associated Press)

Will the recruitniks give Mark Richt a thumbs-up after signing day? (Associated Press)

Today it was the groundhog’s day to provide grist for prognosticators, and tomorrow it’ll be the results of signing day.

From what I’m hearing and reading, a lot of UGA fans are feeling pretty depressed about the prospect of at least a couple of defections by high-profile recruits who’d given the Dogs a verbal commitment (which, considering these are 18-year-old kids, means about as much as an Urban Meyer resignation). Mark Richt has lost his touch as a recruiter, they’re saying. Why do Florida and Alabama get the five-star recruits? And what’s with the apparent recruiting surge of Auburn under Gene Chizik?

Of course, at the other extreme there are folks in the Bulldog Nation who think way too much is made of the annual rankings of recruiting classes. As Rex Robinson wrote recently, “The day I let a 17- or 18-year-old kid dictate the ebb and flow of my day, is when hell freezes over. Obviously, I want to have the best players possible. Some folks think that means 5 stars by a kid’s name. I think it’s about a kid with talent and a real desire to wear red and black.”

Put me down somewhere in the middle. Yes, a class stocked with a bunch of folks that everybody else would have loved to sign is a pretty good indication of a team’s future talent level. But highly touted recruits don’t always pan out (remember next-great-tight-end NaDerris Ward, who last I heard was listed as an offensive lineman for Oregon?).

And even if you do sign a highly ranked recruiting class (as Richt has done most of his seasons at UGA), fans of the Dogs have too much first-hand knowledge of the fact that talent doesn’t guarantee wins.

So try not to get your intestines tied in a knot if Da’Rick Rogers does wind up jilting the Dogs for the Vols. Or if Richt doesn’t pull off some last-minute coup raiding someone else’s verbal commitments for an unexpected Georgia signee.

Georgia’s class currently is ranked in the Top 10 by some recruiting gurus and even if it ends up dropping a few notches due to defections, it’s still going to be a pretty solid bunch of football players. It’s what the coaches do with them that’s going to count in the end.

For those who have the time to follow the progress of Georgia’s recruiting class during the day on Wednesday, over at Georgiadogs.com, the premium service GXtra will be providing free live video coverage availble to all fans (not just subscribers) from inside Butts-Mehre with hosts Chuck Dowdle and former Bulldog Kelin Johnson, starting at 7:45 a.m.

They promise you’ll see signee highlight videos, get in-depth analysis about this year’s class from several assistant football coaches, and see Richt speak to the fans inside Butts-Mehre live.

Somehow, no matter how the day goes, I don’t expect Richt to present the results as anything other than overwhelmingly positive. And, personally, I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on that and wait to see how this class pans out on the field.

Well, I’ve read all the posts up to now. My take doesn’t really matter, but for what it’s worth, here goes…for all of you that think there’s still a chance he’ll sign with us, forget it. He’s gone. He just doesn’t have the guts to tell CMR because he is too busy getting patted on the back and being told how great he is by everyone else.

Personally, I will not be depressed if any recruit bails, even Rogers. And while I believe Da’Rick could have been a star at UGA, I am not going to be held hostage by some little teenage punk whose head is so big right now that he has to enter his school through a roll-up door in the bus garage.

And as a side note, I won’t be disappointed if we lose a kid who may not get past the clearing house due to his grades anyway. I don’t even know if he has a qualifying SAT or ACT score yet.

If he doesn’t want to wear red and black on Saturdays, fine. Apparently his half-daddy and resident mentor didn’t teach him a single thing about honoring his comittments and keeping his word. And the fact that the kid is waiting until tomorrow to “pick a hat”, tells me he’s just a little self-absorbed, attention seeker with absolutely no class whatsoever.

Personally, I don’t believe UGA needs any kid that posesses such questionable character.

I know for a fact that CMR tells every kid he recruits…and I’m paraphrasing here…”Don’t give us your comittment unless you are sure. If you need time to think about and consider all your other options, fine. But when we commit to you, it is and will always be, rock solid. So don’t give us your answer until you are positive you want to be a bulldog”.

That is pretty cut and dried and doesn’t really leave any room for misinterpretation.

And lastly…Da’Rick, if you’re reading this, do yourself a favor. Show a little humility, and grow up.

Your best friend was used as bait to get you to bite. And they hooked you good!

Nash is never going to play QB at that country-bear jamboree exhibit in Knoxville that you are considering. They knew that when they offered him a scolly. Instead of high-fiving each other over the fact that you will be attending the same school, you need to be honest with him and tell him the truth. He walked away from a place where he could actually have played. They used him and his daddy to get to you, but you were complicit because you knew who they really wanted. And if you didn’t, you’re not nearly as smart as you think you are.

That is a sorry excuse for a coaching staff you are considering joining up with. That they would stoop to doing what they did is just plain disgusting.

You’ve gambled with your integrity, kid. I hope it was worth it.

The fact that we are so deep at most positions, in my opinion, is working against us. We have recruited so well that there is a line to play most postitions at UGA. I am not worried a bit. Seems like dog fans are the first to deem things a disaster. AU played with 4 LBs the entire year and only had a couple of guys rotating at DL. Guys can play faster at a program that hasn’t recruited as well as us.

Not going to soft soap it to lose any talent like Rogers would be
disappointing for sure. And the last couple of days we have
had a couple of misses to boot. But Bill I agree with your take
on recruiting. And I got say that worrying over the loss of
a WR makes little sense. My view is that as fans we get much too
excited and focused on offensive skill talent and too little focus
on defensive players. If you are a Dawg fan you can be excited
to know that CMR has a track record and system to draw top notch
offensive talent year in and year out. The key is going forward is
the success of CTG and the defense. If you are going to sweat the loss of any recruits it ought to be strictly guys who could come in
on defense and make an impact in a short amount of time. But even
in the event we miss on some guys we need I won’t panic. Because
that a good season and a full recruiting year for the new staff
could create an amazing class similar to the one the Gators are
putting together this recruiting year.

I live in Calhoun and have seen Nance and Rogers play. Without Rogers, Nance is definetly a 2 Star QB. Rogers is a 5 Star WR and will be great in college if he can check his attitude at the door. Nance’s dad was a good athelete in basketball and tennis in high school, but never a great football player. He is living through his son now. Nance is not a SEC starting QB and never will be. He will ride UT’s bench and then get frustrated and transfer to a D-2 or even D-3 school. If I were Rogers I would distance myself from Nance NOW and not later.

A 5 star player at a AA High School is pretty much the same as a 3 star player at a AAAA+ school. You can cherry pick the crop alot better with a larger basket.

We will be fine…..Just means that Richt will put the peddle down on the next two great WR’s in georgia next year due to AJ leaving early and Da’rick at Tenn……..plenty of players. The 19 we have all are very impressive…..It’s not like this class is rated 47 th like you know who west of us.

Charlotte Dawg,

Do you feel like you will get more respect if you talk tough? What are you 17 years young. Grow up.

JasonT

If Da Rick indeed signs with UT, who cares. Someone posted earlier about UGA loosing three defensive committments, who were they, cause I can only think of two and the only reason they decommitted is because their position coaches were fired and one was hired by Louisville so he committed there. You committ to the school not the coach! Back to Da’Rick, who ever he chooses I do not believe he sniffs PT until late in the year. UGA has atleast 5 WR that I think are better and UT has three receivers on the roster that are better and 2 others coming in.

JasonT

The one thing that makes me mad about the whole thing is if you have no intentions of signing with UGA then decommitt and committ with UT. I believe it is the most proper thing to do. I played baseball in college, even though there is no pub when it comes to baseball recruiting I had a coach tell me if you committ to my university you need to be committed and if you decide another school is better and everyone knows you are going to go there and then please have the decency to let me know and decommitt. Doesn’t seem that Da’Rick lives by this philosophy, seems like he is a Glory you know what.

Mark this down: georgia will be fighting it out every year for 3rd in the SEC east with south carolina. Florida and Tennessee will rule the SEC east for years, now that Dooley is running the show. That new D coordinator hired by GA—not worth anywhere near the money they are paying him. Dooley’s O will light up the Ga D—take it to the bank.

VolsRule ? Interesting name, seeing as how Tennessee has
ruled nothing during this century. Don’t even start with
coming on this site and berating of our program….your
program has been nothing but an embarrassment lately,
including losing seasons, years without bowl games or
rankings, an entire decade (that’s 10 years) without
winning an SEC championship, and the hiring of a punk
coach who couldn’t even tell the truth. We’ve played
poorly vs Tennessee 3 of the last 4 years, a mystery
considering the talent levels and the fact that Georgia
had beaten Tennessee 4 straight prior to that…..but
Georgia’s about to straighten that situation out.
Richt hasn’t won 90 games in 9 years without knowing
his business. Oh….how many games has Tennessee
won in the last 9 years ? How many SEC Championships ?
How many BCS bowl games ? How many #2 or #3 or even
Top 10 rankings ? THOUGHT SO…… Georgia had a
poor year last year for us (but still better than
Tennessee’s), but not a poor decade ! A vol fan
saying UGA is irrelevant ? WOW. Curious spin
control….learn that from Kiffin ?

chill dawg fans, losing a wide receiver, Da’Rick isn’t that big a deal. If he can’t block he wouldn’t play that much anyway. Losing the 4-star defensive tackle to Auburn yesterday was much bigger. If CMR had played his two freshman QB’S last year instead of Joe Cox then Da’Rick maybe would have more of a reason to come to GA than going somewhere else mainly for friendship. What UGA needs more than anything are linebackers.

Man, I can’t believe how torn up some of yall are over the possibility that Rogers comes and plays ball in Knoxville. When Marlon Brown decided on UGA last year, I mean, we were upset and wondered why he would do it, but we never accused Richt of making backdoor deals and other illegal activities. Moreover, Brown got zero playing time as a freshman this past year, and Da’Rick probably knows that.
