Will Da’Rick Rogers see his shadow?

Will the recruitniks give Mark Richt a thumbs-up after signing day? (Associated Press)

Will the recruitniks give Mark Richt a thumbs-up after signing day? (Associated Press)

Today it was the groundhog’s day to provide grist for prognosticators, and tomorrow it’ll be the results of signing day.

From what I’m hearing and reading, a lot of UGA fans are feeling pretty depressed about the prospect of at least a couple of defections by high-profile recruits who’d given the Dogs a verbal commitment (which, considering these are 18-year-old kids, means about as much as an Urban Meyer resignation). Mark Richt has lost his touch as a recruiter, they’re saying. Why do Florida and Alabama get the five-star recruits? And what’s with the apparent recruiting surge of Auburn under Gene Chizik?

Of course, at the other extreme there are folks in the Bulldog Nation who think way too much is made of the annual rankings of recruiting classes. As Rex Robinson wrote recently, “The day I let a 17- or 18-year-old kid dictate the ebb and flow of my day, is when hell freezes over. Obviously, I want to have the best players possible. Some folks think that means 5 stars by a kid’s name. I think it’s about a kid with talent and a real desire to wear red and black.”

Put me down somewhere in the middle. Yes, a class stocked with a bunch of folks that everybody else would have loved to sign is a pretty good indication of a team’s future talent level. But highly touted recruits don’t always pan out (remember next-great-tight-end NaDerris Ward, who last I heard was listed as an offensive lineman for Oregon?).

And even if you do sign a highly ranked recruiting class (as Richt has done most of his seasons at UGA), fans of the Dogs have too much first-hand knowledge of the fact that talent doesn’t guarantee wins.

So try not to get your intestines tied in a knot if Da’Rick Rogers does wind up jilting the Dogs for the Vols. Or if Richt doesn’t pull off some last-minute coup raiding someone else’s verbal commitments for an unexpected Georgia signee.

Georgia’s class currently is ranked in the Top 10 by some recruiting gurus and even if it ends up dropping a few notches due to defections, it’s still going to be a pretty solid bunch of football players. It’s what the coaches do with them that’s going to count in the end.

For those who have the time to follow the progress of Georgia’s recruiting class during the day on Wednesday, over at Georgiadogs.com, the premium service GXtra will be providing free live video coverage availble to all fans (not just subscribers) from inside Butts-Mehre with hosts Chuck Dowdle and former Bulldog Kelin Johnson, starting at 7:45 a.m.

They promise you’ll see signee highlight videos, get in-depth analysis about this year’s class from several assistant football coaches, and see Richt speak to the fans inside Butts-Mehre live.

Somehow, no matter how the day goes, I don’t expect Richt to present the results as anything other than overwhelmingly positive. And, personally, I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on that and wait to see how this class pans out on the field.

i’ve agreed all along that stars & rankings do not guarantee anything. granted, some of the starts/rankings have lived up to hype and others have been busts. you can only use 3 to 4 years from now to decide whether or not the 2010 class was good. as far as Da’rick is concerned..whatever..it is what it is. if he’s not wearing a G as a WR, hopefully next year our defense will implant a G in his chest.

Remember kids, Tenn hired Dooley first and formost because they needed a good criminal lawyer and a coach. Sort of a two for one deal.

Well said Dirty Dawg! It kills me how UT fans are now sucking up to UF and Bama now that they are owned by those two schools. They own my UGA right now too, but there is still alot of fight in this dawg and you will never hear me spew adoration for any school other that UGA!!!!

VolsRule – any school that would hire someone like Kiffin shouldn’t be talking smack! When he left I heard someone describe it as similar to getting a divorce from a hooker…you shouldn’t have married her in the first place.
Also, how are things on the basketball court and the swimming pool. Seems like UGA topped UT 4 times in one week….men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s swimming. Have we beat anyone else in men’s basketball….well, no but you really didn’t beat anybody in football either.

Spoken like Bullpup faithful who got his arse handed to him during recruiting. Where do you begin to explain the losses with holes all over the boat. Stick by Saint Richt-he’s your ticket to another disappointing season pups. 15 total recruits–LMAO. You got spanked by other SEC teams that continue to make Richt’s program look amateurish. 15-you should be thru announcing all your signees by 9:30am.

We’ll be fine….Tech won 11 games last year using mostly 1 and 2 star players. It’s the ACC, but they beat a couple of good teams. We are letting too many 5 stars guys leave the state. If If If we could wrap these players up from leaving ( I mean the Cream guys that everyone wants), we could stand up to Bama ans Florida. On the bright side, we are bringing in 7 or 8 guys who they ALL wanted. GATA.

Who was the coach that said, “I liked it when all you had to do was hang a sign in the gym that asked for those who wanted to play football to come to field to practice?” I don’t know, but the game sure has changed from that day huh? Kinda odd when a guy who makes multi-millions each year finds that his success or failure is based on whim of a 17 year old kid who is sometimes unable to spell his own name.

listen people! stop worrying about this class coming in. UGA has what they need! 2011 class is the class we need to pay attention to. we have more than enough talent this year to take a slide in recruiting this year. we didnt really loose anyone to graduation! so the talent is there. if these kids have a change of heart, so be it! my personal opinion is its there loss, but at the end of the day its there decision! so we all need to chill and wait till the start of the season to show the nation what we’re made of! GO DAWGS!!!!!

Get used to the worst stage dad of all time, and get used to being The Dawgs’ Biiaatch for many years to come. Dawg Poop, Vols Rule, and any others with delusions about your school’s superiority to UGA in developing players for the NFL. Here are the facts:

The SEC is the #1 conference, and by school, the rankings are

FL: 32
UT: 36
GA: 39

But the leader is… LSU – with 41. Hate to admit this, because I think the man is slimey, but it’s probably a reflection of the years under “Tricky Nick” Satan.

Switching to an aggressive defense out of a passive defense is going to make a big difference. We will play tighter pass coverage and the opposing QB will have less time to “pick us apart” because Grantham is sending in the hounds. Watch and see.

We were terrible. …….But you guys at 7 -5 have been a train wreck the last 24-36 months. Your new hire is a good one…if you don’t screw that up. I’m sure you;ll burn a pumpkin in his yard if he doesn’t win 10 games this year. We don’t like the hire because we think he is smart, classy and a good coach. Kiffen was more ya’lls style.

I thought the new DC would help get a few defensive players that we were recruiting. So far, it seems to be just the opposite. 3 defectors on the D since Grantham came calling… Also, aren’t there any more good OL to try to snag? UGA has about 6 open scholarships, right?

I dont know much about the Gates guy that committed to the dogs today, but I am pleased with it. Seems that OL has been an area that we have not focused on very much. Eveyone knows that is where you win a game. Look what Bammer did with a great OL. Anyone have the inside scoop on him?

I agree that the Defensive tackle Thornton is the most important recruit left. We’ve got a lot of offensive started coming back. As far at Rogers goes I always get nervous when somebody elses son comes into play in the recruitment of another player. Mr. Nance leveraged Rogers ability into a perceived better scholarship for his son, and no doubt helped talk Rogers into going to UT. Personally, I doubt his son will ever start a game at UT. Career-wise he was probably better off at Vandy where he might have gotten some playing time.

Since Richt’s teams have a consistant run of under achievement, what will happen when we have a class that may be in the bottom half of the SEC. The coaching staff could learn a lot from Fox who is making a difference in the basketball team with what looked like no talent. Coaching does make the difference and we’re coming up very short. 2009 season, coaching search and now recruiting, all a mess. Richt was going to build a wall around Georgia, look at how few we’re actually getting. This following comments from some top high school players that they didn’t hear much from Georgia. There is a real work ethic problem in Athens and it’s showing up everywhere.

yeah, we just fired about half our staff so there is reason to worry Bill. For every Na’Derris Ward there are about 3,658 5 stars that went to other schools. UF has 3 5 star defensive lineman coming in ALL AT ONCE. Grantham better GATA or im gonna GATA his a$$.

Vol’s worrying about Georgia are misguided. We are road kill to get the dome. Gators are the problem.
We have our own problems, and we are addressing them. Note. you will not hang 45 on us this year.
Grantham’s promised to put the best players on the field and to be aggressive. We all went crazy having Bryan Evans at DB last year. willie played him because he was a senior. That play book is gone. You’ll meet Mr. Rambo this year, or your Qb and wide outs will.
