Five Favorite Bulldogs in the Pros

Fran the Man. (Minnesota Vikings)

Fran the Man. (Minnesota Vikings)

Let’s talk about Dogs in the pros.

A lot of UGA fans follow Bulldog players’ NFL careers closely and no doubt will be tuning in to the Pro Bowl this weekend, where Champ Bailey of the Broncos will be representing UGA. (Jon Stinchcomb of the Saints also would be in the game but he’s on a Super Bowl team.)

The list of other Bulldogs who’ve been selected for the Pro Bowl in the past includes, among others, such names as Broncos Super Bowl MVP and noted Chunky soup fan Terrell Davis, Rodney Hampton, Garrison Hearst, Len Hauss, Jimmy Orr, Mo Lewis, Guy McIntyre, Richard Seymour, Charley Trippi and Bobby Walston. And I’d long forgotten this, but in his very brief pro career with the Falcons, kicker Bobby Etter actually made the 1970 Pro Bowl.

(That also brings to mind probably the most unlikely Bulldog to grace an NFL roster: Ray Jeffords, who was a basketball player for the Dogs that the Falcons decided to draft as a tight end in 1968 for unfathomable reasons. Ah, Falcons draft history!)

Anyway, while on the subject of Bulldogs in the NFL, I thought I’d offer my highly subjective list of all-time pro Dogs. I don’t know if I’d classify them as the “best” so much as my “favorite” Bulldogs to play pro ball.

1. Fran Tarkenton, a fellow Athenian and one of only two Dogs in the Pro Football Hall of Fame (the other being Charley Trippi, whose playing days I’m too young to remember).

2. Jake Scott of the great undefeated Dolphins team. Another product of the Athens YMCA, too.

3. Bill Stanfill, also on that Dolphins team.

4. Hines Ward, Steelers Super Bowl MVP.

5. Herschel Walker, whose combined rushing numbers for the USFL and the NFL (13,787 yards) would place him fifth on the NFL’s career rushing list if the USFL yards were counted (which they aren’t).

There’ve been a lot of other great Dogs in the pros. Who are your favorites?

BULLDOG BITES

Following up on Friday’s discussion about how UGA fans feel about Derek Dooley coaching Tennessee and his father’s mixed emotions about seeing his son go up against the Dogs, Vince Dooley was in Albany for the Quail Unlimited Celebrity Quail Hunt and told the Albany Herald that he doesn’t think he’ll attend the Oct. 9 home game between Georgia and his son’s Vols. “I’ve really decided now that I will sit home and watch the game,” he said. “I think that I’ll be a little bit of a distraction going to the game, so I’ll watch it at home on TV.” … UGA football historian Patrick Garbin notes that 118 years ago on this date UGA played its very first football game, a 50-0 victory over Mercer, attended by a crowd of 1,500 at what eventually became known as Herty Field in Athens. We’ve come a long way since then.

There is no doubt that you have to be a little lucky to win a national championship. Credit Florida for taking advantage of it’s opportunities in the NC game. You can look back at every SEC team that has won a national title and point to a moment in the season where they got lucky. The year UT won, they should have lost to Arkansas (fumbled exchange from center to QB where AK could have just run out the clock. The last time LSU won the national title, UGA would have played them in the SEC C.G. if UK or SC would have made makeable field goals against UT. How close was Michigan playing Ohio State in a rematch in the NCG. Some things are just meant to be and some are not.

I believe that Pat (FIRST!!!!!!!!!) is just having a little fun at the expense of the lunatic fringe. His numbers look valid to me. I believe his point is this: UGA had their worst year this decade in 2009. And they finished 8-5 with a bowl victory. The year before UGA finished ranked #10. The year before THAT it was #2!

So, for all the whiners out there ringing your hands about the program…What’s your point again?

I took a quick glance at recruiting rankings while I had a few minutes. I knew that Richt and staff had done a nice job recruiting over the past 8 years (2002 class through 2009 class), but I was surprised at what I found. No team has finished in the Top Ten in recruiting in each of those years (THAT was my biggest surprise). But two teams made it 7 times…UGA and USC. Four teams made it 6 times…LSU, OU, TN and Michigan (the last two surprised me a little). Only one team hit 5…TX. And four others hit the Top Ten six times…UF, Miami, FSU and OSU.

As always, I consider the recruiting rankings to be a pretty moot point, because trying to rank high football players nation-wide is a joke, but an interesting quickie exercise. Maybe I’ll dig a little deeper in the next few days and report back…

Fran Tarkenton may have been a great dawg and a hall of famer, but after what he said about Favre the other day, he’s turning into a punk. I wanted to reach through the screen and punch him for how stupid he sounded. Reminded me of Archie Manning when he gets on TV with his white trash alcoholic slicked back hair and those shifty eyes. Have to agree that Fran sounds like a putz, sort of like Jimmy Carter criticizing Bush or Reagan. Can’t seem to come to grips with the fact that they are getting old and have been irrelevant for awhile.
My favorite Dogs would start with Andy Johnson. A fair to middlin’ college quarterback who turned in a solid career with the Patriots as a running back/hybrid. Herschel? Not so much, after watching him being run down by a kicker during a kickoff return while he was with the Eagles. Great collegiately, above average as a pro. So, Hines would have to be second. Hoage, Mack Strong and John Kasay, another Athenian, would be on the list also, as no one really thought they’d make it, let alone each have careers over ten years. And who can forget Rodney Hampton? Man, the memories just flood when thinking of the list.

Guy McIntyre with four rings right? Thought Thomas Davis would turn out to be more of an impact player.
The one guy earlier was right…Garrison Hearst was an absolute stud in his prime, strong ankles, cut on a dime. That was Herschel’s problem as a pro. In college, he could run past or through everyone. In the pros where everyone is big and fast, the fact that he couldn’t cut made him average but a solid kick returner. It took him three steps to do what Barry Sanders could do in the blink of an eye.

All this nonsense about Hershel not being productive in the NFL is a joke. He had the most productive career of any Bulldog in the NFL ever, just look at the numbers and make an argument why not.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_National_Football_League_all-purpose_yards_leaders

In 12 NFL seasons, Walker gained 8,225 rushing yards, 4,859 receiving yards, and 5,084 kickoff-return yards.[11] This gave him 18,168 total combined net yards, ranking him second among the NFL’s all-time leaders in total yardage at the time of his retirement; as of the start of the 2007 NFL season, ten years after his retirement, he still ranks eighth.[12] He also scored 84 touchdowns: 61 rushing, 21 receiving and two kick off returns for touchdowns.[11] Walker is the only player to have 10,000+ yards from scrimmage and 5,000+ return yards (all of which were on kickoff returns). He is the only player to gain 4,000 yards three different ways: rushing, receiving, and kickoff returns. He is one of six players (Jim Brown, Lenny Moore, Marcus Allen, Marshall Faulk, and Thurman Thomas) to exceed 60 touchdowns rushing and 20 touchdowns receiving. Another NFL record he possesses is that he is the only player with a 90+ yard reception, 90+ yard run, and a 90+ yard kickoff return all in the same season (1994). He is also the only player to record an 84+ yard touchdown run and an 84+ yard touchdown reception, in the same game (December 14, 1986). That same day, he had 100 yards rushing and 100 yards receiving. Walker is currently ranked eighth all time in all-purpose yards with 18,168, despite spending his first three seasons in the USFL.

Fact:………No SEC team has ever lost a NC game and if UGA would have been invited nothing indicates that it would have been different
.
Fact……….UGA has 2 SEC titles..same as Fla in last 9 years and equal wins over all.
.
Fact……….UGA has been ranked more times top ten in last 9 years than any SEC team.
.
UGA 90 wins in 9 years no other SEC team has more.
.
UGA has 2 SEC titles…same as Fla
.
UGA has won 4 str8 bowls….more than any other SEC team.
.
UGA has won 11 of last 13 bowls…more than any team tied with LSU and more than FLA
.
UGA has won 8 or more games in last 13 years…more than any other team.
.
UGA has been ranked more times in top ten than any SEC team over last 9 years.
.
UGA is clearly as good or better than any SEC team over last 9 years. Only a fool or a fan of the mythical BCSNC selection process (non playoff) would think otherwise.
.
PERIOD.

2 times finished in the top 3

3 SEC Championship Appearances

2 SEC Titles

3 BCS Bowls

2 Sugar Bowl wins

90-27 record over 8 seasons – 79% winning percentage (one of only 7 in the history of college ball to
have ever accomplished this)

4 str8 bowl wins

7-2 in bowls (big games)

Mark Richt coached QB coach for Charlie Ward and Chris Weinke = 2 Heismans; Head Coach for David Greene = all time winningest college QB until Colt McCoy this year); and coached Matthew Stafford = very rich #1 draft pick)

No Probations

Do you even realize that NO ONE gives a crap about UGA except UGA fans?

No one is college football talks about UGA except for the fact that they lose to TN and FL on a regular basis.

Fact: UGA has not come close to playing for a national title since 1980.

Fact: UGA has not been “screwed” out of playing for a national title since 1980.

Fact: FL OWNS UGA!!!!!!! TN OWNS UGA!!!!!!!

The 2007 season is the weakest of them all.

Both of the teams UGA lost to by 25 points, LSU beat instead by 19.

We beat KY by 11 and LSU lost by 6.

Let’s see 1 of the 2 teams LSU lost to by 6 UGA beat by 11.

Both of the teams UGA lost to by 25, LSU won by 19.

UGA was not even the best team in our Division of our conference.

LSU was the best team in the nation.

That’s best team in their division of their conference.

That’s best team in their conference.

That’s best team in the nation, on the field.

Hey man, you need to devote more of this space to the Georgia basketball team. These kids are bustin’ their butts and are right on the cusp of turning the corner.

Having said that, this business of the faves in the pros is pretty lame. But since you’ve done it, and since you’ve put Fran Tarkenton at the top of your list, and since Fran has decided to interject himself into the Bret Favre discussion, here’s my contribution: In order to be a ‘favorite’ not only does one’s playing performance need to be exceptional, so does one’s personality, demeanor and ‘likability’. Francis Tarkenton exhibits none of the latter. He’s been full of himself since anybody that’s ever had to deal with him can remember and, I expect, remains so today. So before you consider your ‘favorites’, you need to examine their ‘off the field’ performance as well.

Tarkenton is probably the best Georgia QB I saw play, but everything I have ever heard about him indicates that he is a personally a jerk. Recent interviews support that assessment.

Fact:………UGA was 12-1 in 2002 (prior to bowl selections)

Fact ………Fla was 12-1 in 2006 (prior to bowl selections)
.
Fact ………Not UGAs fault there were 2 unbeatens that year. “unlucky”
.
Fact……….Not Flas credit that there was only one unbeaten in 2006. “Lucky”
.
Fact:………Luck not merit had more to do with Fla getting invited to the BCS than whether Fla was more deserving to go to a NC with identical records.
.
Only a fool or a fan of the mythical BCSNC selection process (non playoff) would think otherwise.
.
PERIOD.

Coach Mark Richt in 9 seasons at UGA:
UGA had same reocrd when they won the SEC title in 2002 as Fla did in 2006/8 when they won the SEC title. But UGA had the misfortune (luck) to have that record in a year that had 2 other teams with undefeated records.
Hardly an indictment on UGA but rather on the NC selection process.
6 times finished in the top 10
2 times finished in the top 3
3 SEC Championship Appearances
2 SEC Titles
3 BCS Bowls
2 Sugar Bowl wins
90-27 record over 8 seasons – 79% winning percentage (one of only 7 in the history of college ball to have ever accomplished this)
4 str8 bowl wins
7-2 in bowls (big games)
Mark Richt coached QB coach for Charlie Ward and Chris Weinke = 2 Heismans; Head Coach for David Greene = all time winningest college QB until Colt McCoy this year); and coached Matthew Stafford = very rich #1 draft pick)
No Probations
He has my respect. Period.

To Patrick who went to great labors to attempt to convince me, and others, that we’re on a par with Florida, LSU and Alabama. That kind of effort, pure and simple, is called delusional. He is in dire need of treatment and should get it ASAP.

I don’t care about how the system is unfair, that we, the DAWGS, weren’t lucky, that Florida, LSU etc., etc., ad nauseum. Auburn was unluckiest of all in the also ran group where we are: they were 13-0. And yes, we were 12-1 except we couldn’t beat the gators. No NC game for us. Of course, you disagree with that. I understand. Come to papa and he’ll make you feel better.

We STILL haven’t won the national championship. And if, God forbid, Meyer and Richt were in a fatal plane crash, the obits would say that Mark Richt NEVER won a national championship game. NEVER. Deal with it Patrick if you can see through the veil of self-delusion for it is a fact!

If people would quit attempting to justify the unjustifiable, it would be an easier task to see the reality as do I and many other DAWG lovers too.

The question I have for Patrick and fellow travelers is: how many seasons does Richt get to win the NC? He’s starting his tenth and at least three SEC coaches have all won national champsionships in half the time! And that is a fact.

Wake up! If you own a Chevrolet, it is not a Lexus. You can talk ’til you are blue in the face and that car will still be a Chevrolet. The Chevrolet is Richt. The Lexus is Miles, Saban (2) and Meyer (2). Again, DEAL WITH IT.

I’m not content without winning a NC and even then, I’m going to be a pig like everybody else, as I want another one just like the other one!

My answer to the question that I raised is that Richt has at most two years to do the deed or he will be history. And why shouldn’t he be? Shoulda, coulda, woulda. NOT.

Self-delusion is an opiate for the pain of reality for it is just too much for them bear. It is unbearable hence this flight into a never-never land.

Answer to the idiot blogger (djawjuh) calling someone stating factual stats as delusional……………ummmm your an idiot.

Delusion is when someone CREATES facts that are …well not facts. The “facts” dont lie. You may not want to hear them, but it doesnt make them any less factual. If Richt never is AWARDED (and thats the proper term …not “win”) a NC (as NO ONE has ever WON one) but continues to win on the field and win SEC titles (he has as many as Fla) then he is successful.

Notice that in order to WIN a “NC” you have to (in the BCS era) be VOTED into one. Hardly winning anything.

Prior to the BCS era the supposed NC WAS VOTED AS NC BY SPORTSWRITERS. again hardly a real NC.

In point of fact the NCAA does no even recognize the BCS or the AP as NCs only that the school that was awarded it CLAIMS it as a NC.

So yes if UGA leads or is tied with ALL stats (total wins, SEC titles, bowl wins, bowl appearances and top ten rankings) then UGA is as good or better than all other SEC teams. Facts dont lie.

djawjuh,

The Falcons fired Leeman Bennett because they felt his teams had “reached a plateau”. And how many coaches have they had since then and how many Super Bowls have they won? The answer is many and none. You do recognize that Coach Richt has put us in position to compete with (and be one of) the top teams in the SEC, the conference with the most National Championships during his time, do you not?

How long did it take Vince Dooley, Tom Osborne and Joe Paterno to win their first national championships? It would be foolish to get rid of Mark Richt for not yet winning a national championship, even after two more years, and to compare him to a “Chevrolet” is simply ignorant of both automobiles and coaches. You are also simply wrong when you state that “three SEC coaches have all won national champsionships in half the time!” All three coaches that you refer to were head coaches prior to coming to the SEC and therefore did not win national championships in half the time. You can look it up to determine exactly how long it took each of them to win their first national championships.

I understand your desire to have the Dawgs win another one, but what I don’t understand is any Georgia fan’s lack of appreciation for what he has accomplished. To try to demean him, as BuLLdawg does, is simply pathetic and no matter how many assertions he makes, he is contemptible. Don’t fall into his camp.

The argument against UGA being better than Florida in the Coach Richt Era

Well, there is this little 2-7, right patrick ?

Then, there are those 2 National Championships, but patrick says “sans those 2 NC”

Sans the 2-7 too, right patrick ?

3 times Florida (&LSU) have ended the highest ranked SEC Team Final AP Poll.

1 time Coach Richt has ended the higest ranked SEC Team Final AP Poll (down year SEC.)

Coach Richt does not even have a better overall won/loss record than Florida (or LSU) in the Coach Richt Era.

Coach Richt has not one time played in any meaningful Bowl Game in 9 years running

Beating # 21 FSU a 5-Loss team in a Sugar Bowl is NOT a meaninful opponent Coach Richt beat in a bowl game. Beating # 19 Hawaii joke a football team also in a Sugar Bowl also is not a meaninfful opponent Coach Richt beat in a bowl game.

Besides patrick, is there any one else who thinks that UGA under Coach Richt in fact has been better in the Coach Richt Era than either Florida or LSU since Coach Richt’s won/loss record is NOT better than both of them, since both Florida and LSU have 3 times ended the highest ranked SEC team in the Final AP Poll to only 1 time Coach Richt ended the season the highest ranked SEC team and that 1 year Alabama was on Probation and Auburn was the only other SEC team ranked at all in the Final AP Poll at Number 14 in 2003 when we ALSO lost to Florida, and of course there is the little sans the 2 National Championships for both Florida and LSU in the Coach Richt Era and the 1 for Alabama National Championship reigning as we speak.

Don’t you mean sans the 2-7 patrick ?

FACT: UGA has not won a national title in 30 years. In that time, 5 schools in the SEC has earned a national title or have been awarded some form of a national title. Bama-2, LSU-2, Florida-3, TN-1, Auburn-1

FACT: UGA is not a top tier program in the SEC. Florida owns the SEC east. LSU, Bama, Auburn, and Arkansas have owned the SEC west.

AGAIN……….FACTS are facts “bulldawgnuts”. You can state your opinion (and what you say is just that) but I have posted FACTS. Like Fox News says….I report….you decide. If UGA has as many over all wins, more bowl wins, more times ranked top ten etc etc etc then only a moron would say that the program is not as good as a program with less. The 2-7 is only one part of the equation….hence the “as good” part of the as good or better.

Again……………

facts that are not in dispute.

Fact……….UGA has 2 SEC titles..same as Fla in last 9 years and equal amount of total wins over all.
.
Fact……….UGA has been ranked more times top ten in last 9 years than any SEC team.
.
Fact……….UGA 90 wins in 9 years no other SEC team has more.
.
Fact………..UGA has 2 SEC titles…same as Fla
.
Fact………..UGA has won 4 str8 bowls….more than any other SEC team.
.
Fact……..UGA has won 11 of last 13 bowls…more than any team tied with LSU and more than FLA

Fact…… UGA has won 8 or more games in last 13 years…more than any other team.
.
Fact…… UGA has been ranked more times in top ten than any SEC team over last 9 years.
.
Fact…….UGA is clearly as good or better than any SEC team over last 9 years. Only a fool or a fan of the mythical BCSNC selection process (non playoff) would think otherwise.

Now you can come to papa if these3 slaps in your face hurt.

1. Tarkenton 2: Guy McIntyre 3: Herschel 4: Trippi 5: Stanfill

Many, many more are equally deserving. Hey Bill, wasn’t Guy McIntyre the LAST player drafted the year he went into the NFL?

Now Herschel had really good stats in the NFL, but is not one of the all-time greats. I think that has more to do with NFL coaches misusing him, sometimes for years at a time. They seemed afraid to turn him loose at times.

The Tech fans are clearly in full effect today using alias usernames.

As a bulldog fan and graduate, he’s my take on the UGA program: We’re a good football program that shows glimpses of greatness, marked with lapses of mediocrity. When most of Mark Richt’s teams play to their capabilities, they’re capable of beating any team in the country, and I really and truely believe that. With that being said:when the Dawgs half ass around, turn the ball over and commit 15 penalties a game; they play some of the most atrocious football I’ve ever seen!

I also think that the program has slipped the last 3-4 years do to a variety of reasons( Richt not being as hungry, poor coaching from the assistant coaches, lack of talent on the defensive side of the ball, the competition has gotten better, players using the program as a stepping stone and not buying into the program like they once did).

While winning a National Title takes some luck, it also take some discipline. If UGA beats a mediocre South Carolina team and would have showed up to play vs. Tennessee in 2007 and didn’t absolutely lay an egg vs. Florida in 2002, they would have had a shot at the National Title. But their inability to lock it up in key situations is a problem that has plagued the Mark Richt era. Thus UGA is the Atlanta Braves of college football.

“spelling” is that all you got? First my spelling is fine. Second this aint an english class this is a blog.

Now back to the subject at hand…………………………….

another name ..... Ben Smith of Tucker

February 1st, 2010
5:45 pm

Ben Smith was the prototypical corner while at UGA. He was about 5′11″ and about 190 and could cover and hit. He locked up when he tackled and he played in the Eagles organization. He was from Tucker. Ben played in Coach Goff’s era ………….I do believe.

Mike Wilson, and tons and tons and tons of linemen played in the NFL nearly every year from the mid 60s to the present. O linemen Collins and Collier played in the mid to very late 70s at UGA and both played for several years in the NFL.

The above few names are simply stated to illustrate how many NOT SO WELL KNOWN UGA men left and then played big boy ball in the League.

Go Dogs.
