UGA-bred Derek Dooley is a definite step up in class from Lane Kiffin. (Louisiana Tech)
As college football rivalries go, the one between UGA and Tennessee doesn’t have a lot of history (they didn’t play for many years) and it has never had the intensity of Georgia-Florida, or the sibling-like feel of Georgia-Auburn and the season-ending meeting with Tech.
And yet the rivalry with the Vols is the only one in modern memory that saw UGA fans tear down the goal posts in Athens after a win, and it produced one of Larry Munson’s most memorable calls in Knoxville.
I got to thinking about the nature of that rivalry after my son raised the question of how having Vince Dooley’s son Derek as the UT head coach might change how UGA fans view Tennessee.
Certainly, Dooley, who grew up in Athens, played and got his undergrad degree at Virginia and received his law degree from UGA, won’t be the obvious villain in fans’ eyes that loudmouthed Lane Kiffin aspired to be. By all appearances to date, he’s a classy guy who’s more likely to take the higher road like his dad did.
There’s a certain residual affection for Derek Dooley among many in the Bulldog Nation. During his time at Louisiana Tech, I heard quite a few Georgia fans pulling for him to succeed, and his name was even floated from time to time as a likely successor to Mark Richt one day.
But Dooley reportedly is a tenacious recruiter (he was LSU’s recruiting coordinator under Nick Saban), and if he goes so far as to, say, pry a prized five-star commitment away from UGA, that certainly wouldn’t endear him to fans of the Dogs.
Of course, he’d only be doing his job in that regard and I don’t think any reasonable UGA fan could really work up a hate for him over even that.
Still, it is going to be “strange,” as his father said, when Dooley brings his team to play Between the Hedges. “Dooley’s Vols” just doesn’t sound right.
And there’ll be a lot of media hoopla, no doubt centering on what his parents will be wearing and for whom they’ll be cheering. Vince has said Barbara will wear orange and cheer loudly for her youngest son, whereas he’ll have “mixed emotions” and will pull “quietly” for Derek in his private box at Sanford Stadium. Even that has upset some Georgia fans who seem to think the elder Dooley should put his former employer over his own child.
But while the “Dooley” name fronting the Vols might give the annual game against Georgia a bit of the “Bowden Bowl” flavor, overall I’d say having Derek Dooley at UT will cool the rivalry off a bit from what it might have been with Kiffin at the helm. And certainly the young Dooley won’t be as easy a target for ridicule as Kiffin would have been or Phil “the Great Pumpkin” Fulmer was.
What do you think? Will you view Tennessee any differently with a Dooley as coach? And is it high treason for Vince to pull, even quietly, for his son to beat the Dogs?

If he keeps stealing UGA recruits…especially from our own back yard…he will turn into the villain pretty quickly! Shoot we already struggle to win the SEC East with top 5 recruiting classes. How far back do we fall if we drop to top 20 recruiting classes because Dooley steals 4 or 5 of our top home grown players to UT???

Definitely not treason to pull for family. He pulls for the Bulldog family the rest of the time. As far as I can tell, this makes UT the second team in the East I hope does well replacing UK I guess. I still want UGA to beat them up and down, but I won’t root for them to lose as much. Hard to root against a good person and a good family. We need people like Derek to succeed and people like Kiffin to fail.

I will respect Dooley and will lay off the vols as much as possible while he is there. But, given the way they treat their coaches give him a 7-5 season and they will be trying to run him out of town. There is a serious misunderstanding of how college football ebbs and flows with the fans from Knoxville. I do wish he had chosen a classier fan base and a school not in the SEC to make his name.

It is absolutely as easy to hate the Vols today as it was one month ago. If he does pull Da’Rick Rogers away from UGA, any positive emotion displayed by Dawg fans towards Dooley the younger will vanish. His job is to beat our beloved Dawgs. Period. Also, do not forget that current UGA freshmen and sophomores were born AFTER Dooley retired from UGA. They care as much for him as most middle aged UGA fans care for Wally Butts. That is to say, there is some respect there, but a general apathy. It won’t be hard for them to despise Dooley 2.0, especially if he beats us next year.
Finally, I understand that Auburn and GT or our two oldest rivalries. The GT game actually had to be canceled for a while in the early 20th century due to violence between the two fan bases. However, since the SEC was split into two divisions, our priorities have changed. Yes we want to beat AU and GT, but we HAVE to beat UT and UF to succeed, thereby making them our two most important (and bitter) rivalries. In closing, when you’re sitting in Sanford next fall, and you’ve just heard Rocky Top for the 36th time, and its still the first quarter, you’ll remember why you hate the cream sicles. To hell with Tennessee.

The Vols don’t know how lucky they are. Dooley may not take them to where they want to go, but the next guy won’t have a mess to clean up. Kiffen would have brought BIG TROUBLE to Tennessee in the long run. I think Dooley will do well, but like us with Richt, 10 wins hardly gets it anymore. Dooley could go 30-6 his first three years, and you’ll hear drums beating. 20-12 he’s gone.

The only fanbase that seems to hate UGA so fiercely as Tech would have to be UT, but that’s only based on my reactions to people on these blogs. It’s tough to pull for a coach you admire and like when he takes over a program you despise. I’ve got this in double dose because I like PJ and loathe Tech and I like young Dooley but abhor UT. I guess it depends on how successful each is against my beloved Eagles or Dawgs.

Kiffin left, get over it. You don’t see SC crying in their milk because Carrol left, and he won 2 MNCs. Kiffin was building a winning program in TN and he would have been successful. He got an offer anyone would envy and he took it. Now he has a winning program and he leads one of the premier programs in all of sports. USC didn’t have any involvement in the Reggie Bush deal. The University didn’t commit any violations, only Bush did. The most that will happen in the loss of wins in the 2005 season, maybe a few scollies. The program will not only be fine it will thrive; under Kiffin SC will win multiple NCs in the coming decade, COUNT ON IT.

As a Dawg fan, I’m disappointed by the hire. I think Dooley is a class act and good coach with great potential. I think he’ll do much better long term (maybe even short-term) than Kiffin. I would much prefer to face the jack-ass Lane Kiffin. That made Tennessee that much easier to hate. Now, not so much. So, I think his hire will definitely cool some of the animosity in the rivalry.
Anyone who faults Vince or Barbara for openly cheering for their son is a moron or doesn’t have kids. If Vince was still coaching, or the AD, it would be different. However, he’s retired. As a dawg fan, imagine your kid being a football starter for Tennessee. Are you telling me you would be pulling for Georgia to win that game? I’m not saying it would be easy, but come on.

Derek Dooley couldn’t care less about what UGA fans think about him. He was hired as a football coach at an SEC divisional rival and will do everything possible to beat UGA. UT has been soundly beating the Dawgs with alot less talent on paper in recent years. If squeaking out a win is a “Hobnail Boot”, than the recent beatdowns UT has done to the Dawgs must be getting run over by a truck.
As far as ridiculing coaches, if I was a UGA fan I would be ridiculing Mark Richt for taking repeated Top 10 recruiting classes to the Weedeater Bowl.

13 NATIONAL TITLES – 22 SEC TITLES!!!
Whatever……
Dereck Dooley could care less about what UGA or Bama or Florida think about him. This is a bright person – and he knows what he was hired to do – win football games. IF he has to go raid Georgia’s recruits – all’s fair and open game – his focus is to find the best athletes and football players that fit into his football strategy – and go beat up the other team.
Do you really think Nick Saban cares about Auburn – or Georgia – or Tennessee? He cares about whoevev employs him – and that’s it.
Coach Dooley – while not wearing orange – (and I would not) should openly cheer for his son. If Bear Bryants kid coached became HC at Auburn after the Bear retired – I guarentee you you – the Bear would be rooting for his son’s success – no matter who they played.
I get the feeling that Mark Richt is feeling the heat – he knows Da’Rick Rogers is gone – N. Robey is gone – and D. Rogers is gone. That is three (3) of the best athletes that he thought he had sowed up….and they will commit elsewhere.
Also – I applaud Richt for making the needed coaching change on defense – if UGA continues it’s 7/8 win slide – and does not close the Gap to Urban – he will be gone in a few short years. He knows this – he feels this – and Grantham better be a good hire.
Look for Tennessee and Auburn to bolt past UGA in a few years.
Auburn will turn the corner on UGA this year.
Tennessee may be in trouble in 2010 – but they do have a very young team – and combine with this years class – will beat UGA – making it 4 out of 6 in 2011.

I love it when the haters come on here, people who can’t tell you if it’s going to rain tomorrow, and tell us what Georgia will or won’t do in the next year or two. You really make an ass of yourself by saying the things you say ” Georgia is in a slide or Mark Richt is on thin ice”…blah, blah, blah…..We might go 12-0 with a Red shirt Freshman QB next year, who knows. In my opinion it is very possible for UGA to go 12-0 next season. It would not suprise me at all. The Dawgs down fall is simply small things that can be fixed quick. Georgia has the most talent on offense i have ever seen in the history of georgia football for the next few seasons. If Grantham brings a sound Discliplined stud defense to go with this offense then georgia will be right back on top in the sec in the next year or two. But what do i know i just watch every play every game every year.

UT for me is a strong 3rd on the Hate Meter (UF #1, Auburn #2). Failure to Hate these is to ignorantly live in the past! Dawgs have to beat the Vols and the Gators in the East. Auburn, well what’s not to hate. Dooley will be harder to Hate than Kiffin on the Attitude side, but this is Business. Having a Dooley at the helm doesn’t matter. The Vols are a team to Hate. It’s been dissapointing that the Bulldog Nation hasn’t really rallied behind that idea since the conference split into divisions. Vols – Dog Food, Dog Food!

I hope we beat ‘em 1000-0 but I will hold no ill will against Derek or the other Dooleys. I have degree form UGA but if my son got a chance to play somewhere else and UGA didn’t give him an opportunity I would root for him over UGA 10 times out of 10. It’s hard to dislike a Dooley, but Derek is a Vol. Even worse, he’s a Vol who’s determined to take the best talent from this state out of the state. So, he can kick rocks! I hope the Dawgs get after his Dooley azz and destroy UT in 2010. Derek’s affilitation with Tennessee is a disgraceful slap in the face to his father’s UGA legacy. WASHINGTON — The Obama administration is considering several steps that would review the legality of the controversial Bowl Championship Series, the Justice Department said in a letter Friday to a senator who had asked for an antitrust review.
Read the entire article here:

Shouldn’t these morons be worrying about real issues nationally and globally. The Great Leader will impose his will upon the NCAA as he is attemting to do to this country. This administration as the one before it is a joke.
I have long believed that we need a system that determines who are truly, the best teams in college football at the end of the season but the government surely needs to devote it’s time to more pressing issues and not waste more of taxpayer’s money by giving us their two cents worth on college football, being that the majority are probably not even fans.

I have to say I am generally impressed with the class of most of the commenters on this thread. The usual number of jerks on both sides has been greatly diminished by the Dooley hire, and that is a positive. As a Tennessee alum who has spent a quarter century in Georgia and who sent his daughter to UGA, I know more than most about this rivalry. (Let me say that the HOPE scholarship was the biggest factor, but I also respect UGA for its improved academics). Back to football, I’ve always been a bit disappointed that Tennessee/Georgia wasn’t MORE of a rivalry, considering that in recent history, the Vols had a nine game winning streak over UGA and even now, in the lowest period of our program in recent memory, we’ve beaten the Dawgs three of the last four. We always finish third in your minds after Tech and the Gators. We local Vols can’t help but feel a bit disrespected by that. Maybe Dooley’s hiring will change things, raise our stature a bit. We Vol fans do enjoy playing you guys, and we have greatly enjoyed playing you every year. Frankly, I’d much rather lose to UGA than the Gators, so maybe we can pool our mutual hatred of the slimy reptiles.
I said once before that we are a bit like rival families just joined in marriage, kind of like the Montagues and Capulets, or maybe the Hatfields and McCoys. Good luck to the Dawgs and may all our future family fights be played with good sportsmanship.

I’ve said it before and I will say it again – There are ONLY 2 things Georgia football fans need to have in their minds for next season, (1) beating Florida and (2) playing to the conference championship in December. Anything other than those 2 things is completely wasted effort. I know everyone has this incredible “love fest” for Mark Richt, but you need to look at the records. Since Mark Richt has been the coach at Georgia 3 different SEC coaches have won 5 national championships. During that period, Georgia has not even played for a national championship. The closest Georgia has gotten was a #1 ranking after the famous Sugar Bowl against Hawaii 2 years ago. And, we all know how the bottom fell out after getting that ranking. It’s time to fish or cut bait.

First, Neyland Stadium has been the site of several of Munson’s greats, from Herschel running over Bates, P-35 Haynes, Jabari’s fumble and Jones’ 96 yard return (that was in Knoxburgh, wasn’t it?), and face it, Bill, anyone who would think Vince should pull for Georgia over his own son is an absolute, unadulterated, 100% idiot. Why? First, it’s his SON, secondly, Vince is an Auburn grad, not a GA grad, he only worked here, and third, his separation from Ga did not go well, if you recall. Much animosity between he and Adams, I imagine. Probably he and Damon, as well, as one of the first things Damon did as AD was to fire half a dozen of Dooley’s long time assistants in the department. I live in Athens, enjoy it immensely, and am a long time season ticket holder, but believe me, when you live here and hear some of the ways things are done, the bloom is long off of the rose. The athletic department is a business first, last, and always and does any and every thing it can to make sure the dollar is dutifully worshiped.

However, the other side of the equation is that his grades are so poor, he could not have gotten in UGA and would end up at Hargrove, GMA, etc…maybe he can get in Ten-uh-see.That’s fine, we’ve got plenty of receivers anyway. Besides, we took the best wr from their state last year, and I’d rather have Brown than Rogers. My bigger concern is, can CMR turn things around from last year. I am not an alumnus, but I have been pulling for the Dawgs since 1962. When I received my first issue of season tickets, in 1976, I found that I was seated on the South Side Lower Section right in the midst of UGA alums. These people had class and character. They were pleased to welcome the opposing team’s fans to UGA, but always wishing their team a sound thumping by the Bulldogs. Ridicule and wayward animosity towards your opponent was never part of our game.
Yes, there used to be this thing called “sportsmanship,” but it takes class and character to be able to exhibit that quality. It is unfortunate that those wonderful attributes have gotten lost in the crowd. How I miss the “old school” fans!

Tennessee fans are quick to mention that 9 in a row streak vs Georgia. You never
hear them mention that Georgia won the 4 in row immediately BEFORE that streak AND
Georgia also won the 4 in a row immediately AFTER that streak. Here’s a nice streak
for Tennessee fans to ponder: ZERO SEC CHAMPIONSHIPS IN THE LAST TEN YEARS.
The evidence is there – Tennessee is spiraling down. Although they just traded way up on
head coaches as far as class goes he was what, their 7th choice ? If Tennessee’s such
a great program, seems like coaches would be JUMPING to come there. And how good the
new coach’s performance will be at Tennessee has yet to be determined – a losing record
at Louisiana Tech last year is not a good sign. As for us, it’s time to stop underachieving
vs them, be ready to play, and administer some much overdue butt-kickings. I like Dooley,
but at this point it’s guilt by association.

Here on the on the border, you have to deal with way too much orange, and persistently here about how wonderful the Big Orange is compared to our Bulldogs. Likewise, the Vol’s fans here are ecstatic about the prospect of taking our recruits because they have Dooley’s boy. Bottom Line: I hope the Vols lose every game with or without Dooley.

VD was my coach while i was in school at UGA and now? His son is just another UT coach. If UGA can pistol whip the Vols this fall, then fine with me. On a regular basis will be even better. He is not a UGA man anyway. Big deal.
As for stealing recruits? They really are not a recruit unless they FIRST want to attend a particular school. If we lose one or four or even five in staters to so and so college, then we seem to always return the favor by “stealing” one like Marvelous Marlon Brown, or The Frosh QB, AJ Green or Orson Charles or Knowshon Moreno or a Matt Stafford or a Terry Houge or a Charlie Trippi or Franki Sinckiiwch, both of whom were Penn born and raised, I do believe. Rodney Hampton and Tim Worley and Bobby Burns and too many to name were from other states. Kirby Moore was from Dothan Albama and we won the SEC with him in 66, if I recall correctly. This “mix” has been true for years and years and years. Big deal. besides, if the kid does not want UGA, then we need to know now. See Reshad Jones.
The KEY it to meld the right players into a winning TEAM.

No change of opinion for me–I enjoy hating all things orange. I will now have a bit of respect for their coach, unlike when Lane (the Horse’s A$$) was there. But TN is still high on the must crush list.
This is the SEC we can’t go around liking any other teams, it just isn’t natural. “Good Old Fashioned Hate” is the proper description for SEC rivalries and of course for the yellow gnats.

Tennessee will do great things under Dooley. The question is,how long will he stay there considering the mess Kiffen left. But i am glad he is getting his chance. And if his parents want to root for him, then so be it. I would root for my child any day over my alma mater, or former employer.

UT will make the BCS bowls before the dogs do under young Dooley.
Roger you need to come on up to UT with Nance and be a winner. Not much hope with Bobo and Richt at uga.

It is funny how “rednecks” across the south have the audacity to call other “rednecks” rednecks and hillbillies and such. I have to say that many posters on this blog are truly incapable of sportsmanship regardless of their alliance. From smug gator fans to arrogant Alabama fans all the way to naive Georgia fans. I have visited stadiums across the south, and more than once in some of the stadiums. IMO the worst fan base is without a doubt gator fans. My fellow UT fans are in no way angels, but the sore winners enjoy to thoroughly make sure you feel the least welcome in their part of the south.
You would have thought that a fan base that FINALLY has a winning record against UT would have figured out that they FINALLY have a winning record against UT. (Florida)

I really don’t think Barbara Dooley should wear ugly orange in a box paid for by UGA alumna and fans. Wear it at home, Barbara, but not at Sanford Stadium. Maybe both Vince and Barbara should both wear beige.

You have GOT to be kidding me. Vince not wearing orange, that I can understand. Mothers are loyal to their blood, not a school. As far as Miss Barbara is concerned, her loyalty to Jawja ended when Vince retired. This is how it should be.

They are still Tennessee. Who cares who is coaching them? Dooley is trying just as hard to get players out of Georgia as Kiffin did. He is just not a loud mouth. I want to beat Tennessee and everyone else we play, and it does not matter who the coach is.

All this shows is that Derek is his own man, just like his dad was when he left his alma mater to take the head job at Georgia. One never knows what career opportunities will arise, so I’m glad he got this one. I like the sound of “Dooley’s Vols” – just hope he loses a certain game in October more often than not. Other than that he can win them all as far as I’m concerned.

Good points, Dawg Trainer. Putting blood aside, I suspect that the Dooley’s usual loyalties, deep down, are to their alma mater, Auburn. Even with an 11-0 Georgia team and a chance to play for the national title, the lure of his alma mater was almost more than Dooley could resist back in ‘80. That was after 16 seasons at Georgia and with several more years coaching the greatest running back in college football history to look forward to. Nothing wrong with loyalty to your school. But no loving parent would not pull like crazy for a son, no matter where he is coaching.

Bama Stan, you said if Richt continues the 7/8 win slide. This is the first season he’s had 8 wins since 2001, so this makes two 8 win seasons since 2001. Your comment really makes no sense.

Red, you bring up the “Hobnail Boot” game, what about two seasons later when UGA won 41-14 in Knoxville. That was funny seeing 99,000 fans in Orange leaving with about 8 minutes left in the 3rd QTR.

I’m not worried about UT at all. Richt is 5 and 4 against them in his career, with Willie gone I think the defensive will be more prepared against UT. I mean I could hav e coached the defensive a heck of a lot better coming out of the half in last year’s game.

Dooley’s record was at a school transitioning to a higher division in a better conference. He gave Boise and LSU all they wanted and had that program headed in the right direction. Come on, after all they are LA Tech. He has football in his blood and coached for ole Satin himself. As for fans in the south, there are plenty of bad apples to go around with all the fans. I went to school just north of UF and let me tell you, there is no place as redneck as that part of Florida!! Tennessee has 4 good sized metro areas which beats all other southern states hands down. I don’t count Florida as a southern state, in fact as I said the only redneck part of it is up north all around UF. Most fans are classy, but I’ve heard of more bad experiences at UF than anybody..UGA fans wouldn’t know because your team doesn’t have to play in Gainesville. You do have to face the fact that UT owns UGA. All those years in the 90’s when you guys just couldn’t beat us. Then you get lucky and ruined a nearly perfect season in 2001. 3rd and Chavis(our old coordinator) was the joke among UT fans. We can get you to 3rd and 8 or worse, but what comes next?? First down!! He never, ever figured out that ole Stevie was going for the end zone after a turnover when he coached Florida. Seemed like he was successful 95 percent of the time too. We all used to scream at the TV to cover deep…He never heard us..Touchdown Gators every time..Most years, like last year, when we couldn’t beat one of the big boys, we almost always beat UGA. In reality you guys are just another also ran like us. It’s Bama and Florida and that’s it. The rest of us will beat each other up. It’s still the best conference in the land, but the rest of the country doesn’t understand the beatings we give each other and the effect it has on our teams when we think we have an off week and still have to struggle to beat one of our lower tier teams. Almost every team is competitive, some just don’t have the depth to last the season. That is what sets Bama and UF apart..They’ve got top players 3 deep. Heck, they have a nearly impossible chance at going undefeated. That was our first Championship game with 2 undefeated teams. I sincerely believe it was a setup though. Without the poorly officiated games both teams would have had at least one loss a piece. I like UGA because we’re going to beat you most years. You’re best talent is in Valdosta which is pretty much a part of Florida. UT is not far from the other half of your state. In the end most kids want to stay close to home. Funny how most states seem to have their state university headquartered on another state’s border. Arkansas needs to move to the Big 12, they are basically in Oklahoma..why they are in the SEC I do not understand.

After reading most of the above comments, I really wish Georgia would go ahead and fire Mark Richt so I could go back to hating EVERYTHING about UGA.
