Stuck at work and I could only watch sporadically on TV, but what a great win for the Dogs at the Steg. Travis Leslie was unreal. And what has been evident in the two upsets and close games Georgia has played this season was driven home today: This is a very well-coached team. Once Mark Fox gets more talent in Athens, watch out!

This win was INEVITABLE. I bragged all week that UGA was going to break out, and UT was going to be the victim. This team is going places, CMF has evolved this team into a group that can play GREAT any giving day.
Next: Florida, and UF can NOT stop an inside oriented team. This next game should be a gimme for the Dawgs

Leslie played another outstanding game, his athleticism is unreal. Trey beating the Vols inside and outside. Price stepped in off the bench and played solid. Defense was the real story shutting down Wayne Chism and the Vols. Finally Georgia got that SEC victory after blown leads in their previous 3 games.

Mr. King, too bad you couldn’t watch this entire game. Mark Fox is amazing! I haven’t missed a minute of any of their games this year thanks to TV and GXtra. Trey and Travis are the best tandem in College Basketball. I’m still handing on to Mark Fox’s words that it doesn’t take 2 or 3 years to rebuild, that it can be done faster than that. Mark Fox and the Georgia Bulldogs are in the midst of proving that. Georgia got killed my Missouri only to bounce back and beat the Jackets. They lost 3 straight games to UK, Miss St. and Ole Miss (all three heart breakers) and bounced back to dominate Tenn. I don’t recall watching any recent Dawg BB team that bounced back like this group. You could argue that the Dawgs should have won all of their SEC games. I could see the Dawgs putting together a few wins in a row here. Teams are just having a hard time dealing with the Dawgs inside game. What Mark Fox is doing this year should bring some better recruits to Georgia. Next season could be great. Heck, the last half of this season could be great. Go Dawgs!

Don’t wish to toot my own horn…and I’m certainly not the only one…but I said we were gonna beat these guys and we did. This is a coach with a team that is way better than 9-8…and way better than 1-3 in the conference…and is only gonna get better.
And while I’m here, to hell with Larry Conley. This guy hasn’t given Georgia any respect for fifty years – since he came to Atlanta with his high-school team, Ashland, KY, and beat Sylvan and Campbell in back-to-back games. Well this time no matter how much he wanted Bruce ‘Alimony’ Pearle to win it wasn’t gonna happen.
Congrats to the Georgia kids…congrats to the Georgia coach…and, particularly, congrats to the Georgia fans. They filled the place up and stayed into it for the full forty minutes. One thing though. When you’re beating the Number 8 team in the country, it doesn’t do your team any good to chant ‘OVER-RATED’…I’d much rather hear you chant – ‘Go to hell Rocky Top, go to hell’

Mark Fox is a winner! In a very short period he’s put together a great coaching staff, got the players to play unselfish team basketball, and brought excitement back to Georgia basketball. When he and his staff convince 3 or 4 above average home grown young men to stay in state and come to Georgia for four years then we can fly to the moon(NCAA Sweet 16 and beyond.) AD Evans made a great hire. Let’s hope that when Coach Fox gets Georgia to the top of the SEC he’ll be appropriately compensated and stay around to enjoy the fruits of his labor. Good luck BBall Dogs. By the way, I call the style of play that Georgia has adopted as the “Fox Trot.”

The sleeping Giant is starting to wake up. I don’t understand all of the talk about getting better when they get better players. I am not that knowledgeable about basketball talent, but I like what I see now. I touted CMF when he was hired in these blogs (remembering how he beat the Dawgs in the Steg a few years back). In fact, I predicted a good run in the SEC Tourney and a trip to the dance, as this season’s surprise team (I got dissed for that one, too). Barring any significant injuries, I don’t see why they can’t finish like this. What a game!

Barkin Dog: I agree with you. If this team plays the rest of the season the way that they did today, they are going to make the Big Dance this year…They just played the top four teams in the SEC and more than held their own. They should be 4-0 in the conference. They were leading late in the previous three games and are starting to learn how to finish games.
The reason everyone is talking about him recruiting better players is, the best players in this state go elsewhere every year. They rarely come to UGA. Just imagine having 3 or 4 other players on this team as talented as Thompkins and Leslie. With Mark Fox’s coaching, that would truly be a team that nobody would want to play.

LHardingDawg, I agree with you. Things just FEEL brighter right now. Just like grantham said about keeping the talent here; If Fox can sign just 2 of the top 6 players in Ga each year, then go out and sign 2 more players who fit a certain role, we can be Top 15 every year, sweet 16 or so.

Hey Chef Tim, have you looked at their schedule? Their next two games are @ Florida and @ South Carolina. Two winnable games. A split would be fine, though. Because their schedule gets a whole lot easier the rest of the way. They play 16 conference games. After this two game road trip, they will either be 3-3 or 2-4 in the conference. I see them finishing with a 10-6 or 9-7 record in conference. With 2 wins in the the SEC Tourney, they get in with either a 20-11 or 19-12 record.
You have to remember, they already have three signature wins. They beat Illinois at the Gwinnett Arena, and have upset two ranked teams in GA Tech and Tennessee.

I hate to tell you, but you’re barkin’ up the wrong tree. If Fox had one more big man, this team would be darn good. It’s not a bad squad at all, but unfortunately Albert Jackson is starting. Jackson plays hard defensively, but I believe a hockey puck would be just as foreign in his hands as a basketball is for him. Barnes has never lived up to his potential and this is the best game I’ve ever seen Price have.
If I was a Vol fan, I’d be plenty worried. Not just about the arrests, but that Pearl’s kid is getting so much playing time.
It’s nights like this that make you proud of the Steg. In everyone else’s modern gymnasium, the sound would be more muffled. In our crackerbox, it’s deafening. I just wish the pep band waited until Tennessee was on the court before the struck up “Smooth Criminal.”

I remember on this very site, a lot of u were like who is mark fox? why would we hire him? so many of you were questioning the AD. i go to univ of ga now, but in middle school and freshman yr of h.s lived in reno, before i moved to atlanta/ so i was familiar w/ nevadas basketball program, and how he produced NBA stars in ramon sessions , nick fazekas, and kirk snyder. and took nevada to the tourney countless times and even beat texas one year in the tournament when texas was a top team. I knew it was gonna be a great hire, didnt know theyd be performing this well- so soon. UGA is like4 -6 minutes away from being 4-0 in the SEC. Props! wait til we start getting the top players in GA. there are a lot of players in GA that are ranked in the top 100 in the country, and none of them are staying in state except one to GT. Jordan Mcrae ( ranked 36 in the country) is goin to tennessee, ryan harrow ( ranked 37 in country, attends walton h.s) is goin to nc state, jelan kendrick ( ranked 43, and attends wheeler h.s)…will be attending memphis in the fall, jamail jones ranked #53 will be goin to marquette. ( marquette is a good bball school but really marquette?!), jason james ranked #63 in the country will be goin to them nerds .. in the streets. so once we start getting you know at least one of these players, with this coach..the sky is the limit!

Dawg2012 — well said. You seem to know your stuff about the Dawgs and their coach. I hate to admit it, but I bet on Nevada several times (when I was last betting round ball years ago), and they covered easily many times. That’s why I was so fond of Fox. He wins and covers (expectations and the line). Heck, the dawgs has covered the last 4 or 5 I think, including tonight (6.5 pt. dogs). I’m not endorsing betting at all, just the coach UGA was lucky to get.

Home wins over ranked teams are attention getters but road wins over ranked teams impress the NCAA Selection Committee. The Vols didn’t hurt Kansas when we thumped them in Knoxville. It’s the road games that people notice big. The Dawgs played UK very good up there and I’m sure they’ve been noticed. Gotta get over the hump and tonight was a beginning but not the end all. For UGA to be playing well is great for our conference, especially the East Division which to me is by far, better than the West. Pearl isn’t allowing Tennessee to run with the same zeal he did before the idiots pulled the New Years Day screw up. He seems to be content with a slower half court game which I think he’ll loosen the reins on within the next few weeeks…Again, Congrats Dawgs.

If the Dawgs go 8-8 in the SEC they get in the tournament. The Dawgs have even caught the eye of of Dick Vitale. Dicky V and the Clemson/Duke announcers talked about the Georgia win and what a great job Fox has done with this team. Leslie seems to make to make the ESPN’s Top 10 Plays every time Georgia plays and that is bringing a lot of attention towards Georgia Basketball. Trey Thompkins is considered by a lot of coaches as one of the best players in the country. This team has already been noticed by the people that will pick the 65 teams that go to the tournament. I haven’t had this much watching Georgia basketball in a while. Go Dawgs!

Gen Neyland,
Just to rub it in a little bit (you are being gracious in losing), but our women’s swim team rolled over UT and our men’s swim team pulled out a nail biter over the Vols in the Ramsey center pool today. I was there for all three victories over the Vols and it was sweet. I must admit that although I thought the Dawgs would play your team close in basketball, I didn’t think we would win. Instead we dominated from opening tipoff to closing buzzer. It was a great day to be a Bulldog!!!

Now we both have a coach and a team that plays with a passion, and purpose. It’ll be fun to watch these two teams go at it in the seasons ahead… maybe meeting 3 or 4 times a year, with the tourneys.
Now, going to bed. Gotta get rested for some championship professional sports tomorrow.

Congrats to the basketball Dawgs! Great job and a great game! As for FL this Wednesday…unless they shoot well from the perimeter and successfully pressure us on defense…Ga will beat those people.

jesse james the buzzer beater Parsons shot just made up for the missed foul shots he had last year in the final seconds. Great week of basketball for the Men and Lady Dawgs. Sorry about your luck Vols but I love it!!!!

lol a bubble team?? your 9-8 with loses to wofford, and UAB. You would have to win every single game for the rest of the year to even be mentioned as a bubble team. I think fox will have them in the tourney within a year or two though. Can we trade coaches?

Fox’s biggest job will be to convince Leslie and Thompkins to stay next year. Get those two back, and UGA has a real shot at the SEC East in 2010-11.

I think the talent is already there. These guys are only get better on offense as the season goes along. Coach Fox’s triangle offense requires a lot of anticipation and reads. The more they play together the more they will recognize. It’s obvious the kids have bought in. It’s obvious that Coach Fox is committed to the development of these young men by how many guys he rotates in out of a game. Wow.

Am I missing something? Wasn’t yesterday the 1st conference win and isn’t their overall record like 8-8? I guess we don’t have very high expectations on the hard wood.

Mr. Evans, great hire!!!! I liked him before he ever coached his first game, but now I love this guy! Mr. Evans, go ahead and lock this guy down for a long time, and he will bring championships to Athens. Here are UGA’s most critical needs in basketball and football.
Football – Indoor practice facility – We have got to keep up wtih the Jones if we are going to continue to recruit in the top ten every year.
Basketball – State of the art arena (I believe Stegman will be renovated by the beginning of next year, but don’t stop there; find other ways to improve) – We have got to keep up with the Jones if we are going to get top players to come to UGA. Also, fan support is a must.
We finally have a credible DC for our football team, now all we need to do is finish this recruiting year on a strong note. We need a couple of hogs on both sides of the ball, and we need to keep Da’Rick.
I love what is going on in Athens. Great job by Mr. Evans, CMR, and CMF. Lastly, let’s not forget that our baseball team is going to make a lot of noise this spring. Coach Perno is fantastic!!!! Go Dawgs!!!!

Why did you people not realize at the time of the hire that Mark Fox was a good hire? It seems that the problem that these kids have had is the lack of coaching prior to his hire. Yes, we need to keep some of these in state GA BB players, and they need to go to UGA. I am curious about how the recruiting class will be this year. The guy knows HOW to coach. Let’s get some higher rated guys in here and UGA BB will definitely be in the main stream of College BB.

Great win. As a dawg living in Reno I watched Coach Fox consistently do great things with the Wolfpack (UNR) out here and knew he’d be a great hire for the Dawgs. The Dawgs usually have some talent but not near the level of some of our SEC competition. We needed a coach that could get the most out of the talent he has and that’s exactly what Coach Fox is all about.

for uga to be a force in the sec coach fox will have to make a statement to fact that he’s going no where and he’s not interested in going to another school period and he’s here to make uga a basketball power.uga officials have to give him reason not to leave. give him what he needs to make this happen. good kids will come to uga only if they know the program is dedicated. uga has the coach now it’s up to the school.

Look at it this way, they started the SEC schedule against the 4 ranked teams, and did much better than anyone would have expected. Improving every week, and schedule gets more favorable going forward.

It’s Final Four or bust now –although I hope we’re not next season’s pre-season #1, we all remember how that turned out for the football program –I don’t think we’ll ever recover from it either.

The Men Dawgs are the type of team that bother the bigger fish in the SEC. By that I mean they get up for the Big Ones but can’t muster the same ‘high’ for the rest. That just won’t do. Play UK good, beat UT but lose to bottom tier programs. It boils down to every Dawg does have it’s day…In the Lady’s game, the rage was beating the Lady Vols on your floor but little to zip on the following game that resulted in a loss on your court. The Lady Vols in turn went to LSU and won. One game, one win here and there isn’t front page news. It’s Dawg food for the masses. Continuity is what makes champions. Fox has the ability to get ‘em up but to sustain that drive means personnel. I think he gets that rolling eventually but not this season, at least not yet…

Hey, Gen Neyland, did you figure that out all by yourself? Fox gets three to four good recruits this year, and you guys just may find yourselves struggling to keep up with us. As long as you guys keep that AD you have, look for the continuation of UT’s current misfortunes. By the way….whose your daddy?

Congrats to the roundball dawgs. Well done. We didn’t expect much from this season and literally every single victory is a bonus. I didn’t know who Mark Fox was when he was hired but as a reasonble fan I said give him a chance. We will have to see how the season finishes out but so far great job working with what Felton left him. Kudos to the kids buying in and playing hard this year. A lot of them could have walked but instead manned up. Keep up the good work.
