Dogs have a lot of questions to answer at G-Day

Will the pressure be on Mike Bobo this season? (Associated Press)

Will the pressure be on Mike Bobo this season? (Associated Press)

This year’s G-Day game, set for April 10, should be one of the more interesting UGA intrasquad matches in a long time.

While some aspects of the 2010 Dogs at least appear to be pretty well established — the offensive line and the two top running backs — there are a lot of big question marks hovering over Mark Richt’s 10th team.

Will Logan Gray still be competing for the starting quarterback job by G-Day or will he be a receiver or in the secondary? Will forgotten running back Richard Samuel have taken his speed to the linebacking corps?

And the two most intriguing questions: The quarterback battle and the implementation of a different defensive alignment under new coordinator Todd Grantham.

About half the defensive starters from last season are gone, and the defensive players are a little nervous about the switch to a 3-4 scheme and where they’ll fit into it. Who’s going to play nose guard? Who will those blitzing outside linebackers be?

But at the same time they’re excited about Grantham’s preference for an aggressive, attacking defense.

As fans, we’re feeling the same way, but come G-Day it’s likely we won’t get a true picture of what kind of D the Dogs will field in the fall. Chances are the players will still be learning what they’re supposed to do and making a lot of mistakes. It’s likely to be a pretty sloppy game on the defensive side.

Which could give us a possibly misleading view of where our offense stands, particularly the play at quarterback. Still, it will be instructive to see how Aaron Murray and Zach Mettenberger have progressed since we last saw them play in the 2009 G-Day game. At that time, Murray definitely looked to be farther along and impressed with his ability to roll out, while Mettenberger still had a ways to go on his footwork and dialing back his cannon of an arm. We’re told both players have improved since then. It’ll be fun to see how much.

The spotlight obviously will be on Grantham since he was brought in to clean up Willie Martinez’s mess, but I’m thinking there actually may be more pressure this season on offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, who’ll have two redshirt freshmen and a true freshman (incoming recruit Hutson Mason) taking snaps this fall if Gray does switch positions, and a pretty inexperienced quarterback even if Gray stays in the mix.

Some folks felt Bobo skated a bit in the blame game last season in that the embattled Martinez took the lion’s share of the heat for the Dogs’ troubles when in many cases the offense’s sputtering and turnovers left the defense with a short field to defend. This year, with the defense in a rebuilding mode, the onus is on the offense to lead the way. Is Bobo up to it?

What other G-Day story lines are you looking forward to seeing?

LADY DOGS MEET THE LADY IN ORANGE

Tonight’s game between Andy Landers’ 8th ranked Lady Dogs and the 3rd ranked Lady Vols at Stegeman Coliseum is a big one and I know at least one Georgia fan who’d sell his soul to see UGA beat the orange pants suit off Landers’ longtime nemesis, Pat Summitt. (Right, Steve?) Reserved seat tickets are still available for the 7 p.m. game and are $5 for adults and $3 for kids. Tickets can be ordered online (using the print-at-home option only) until 3 p.m. today or can be bought by calling 1-877-542-1231 before 4 p.m. They’ll also be on sale at the Stegeman ticket booths starting at 5:30 p.m. Mastercard, VISA and cash are all accepted forms of payment at the Stegeman Coliseum ticket windows. UGA students get in free when presenting their valid UGA ID Card at Gate 4 of the Coliseum. The first 300 UGA Students will receive a “Beat Tennessee” T-shirt and free pizza. All UGA students can register to win a Nintendo Wii, iPod Touch and other gift cards during the game.

Go Lady Dogs!

Let’s get one thing straight: it was Mark Richt’s mess; Martinez was simply a dull tool.

Interested in the Samuel situation. What I like to see in the G-Day game is which players that heretofore have been relatively quiet or redshirted will step up. i.e. Geathers, Strickland, Pugh, Lott, Lynch, Love, Long, etc.

Yes you do, there will be a huge QB controversy going on up there in Athens. It will lead to one happy Dawg and three unhappy, angry Dawgs sitting on the bench for several years. Transfers could happen and questions about if the guy under center is the right guy for the job instead of one of the guys on the bench could happen. QB controversy hitting Athens theatres September 2010.

well, the first of the problem that needs to be fixed, TURNOVERS!!! funny how some folks keep forgetting that. without TO’s, we win UK and OSU easily and maybe LSU. question is, how do you go about fixing that problem(i’m sure many on here will have the answer to that). and with another inexperienced QB coming into the equation, it doesn’ look like an easy fix. man, i just hope the running game keeps progressing forward. as for the D, well, expect those first year mistakes under a new coach. you can also expect to give up the big play quite often also with the new scheme. last, find that 350 lb nose tackle(if you want this Defense to be successful).

Seems like the perfect time to move Samuel to LB. Everyone will be learning a new scheme anyway and now they suddenly have an increased need for players at the position. It’s a win-win.

Also, I agree that Bobo is at something of a crossroads in his OC career. People aren’t likely to give him the “growing into the position” benefit of the doubt any longer. Results or else is probably going to be the name of the game.

What is Mark Richt’s record when we rush for over 100? If we are ever going to win the national championship we have to be a consistant running team. King and Ealey are adequate, but they are only as good as our offensive line. Stacey Searles is on the hotseat as far as I’m concerned. Run the ball Bobo, use your fullbacks. Use your young QB’s to manage the game, use the running backs and OL to win it.

QB will be the most intriguing of all. But besides that one of the
things less highlighted I will find entertaining to follow is the
continued development and competetion at the wideout positions.
I believe the biggest impact was felt from last years recruiting class
at wide reciever. Particularly interested in Marlon Brown as many
thought he would be a guy who emerged only to watch Wooten and T.King
develop more quickly. Of course as I said earlier the more important
is QB position because talented WR’s matter little if the QB position
is not secure.

We have a solid new RB coming in out Dekalb, he might fight for some playing time, and add a spark. The competition at QB will only help this position in the long run, though we might struggle next year. Penalties and Turnovers kill us every game for the past two seasons-we need to fix this 1st

Bobo only kept his job because he has 5 young kids. He’s a failure as an OC, and an average QB coach. He’s not a bad recruiter. If Dawgs rank in the top 40 in offense, they’ll definitely finish in the top 10 – that’s any year, not just next season.

Murray is the QB. If Samuel doesn’t shift to LB, he’ll spend the rest of his UGA career on the bench – Easley and King are just better RBs. Samuel is another of these weight room freaks Richt falls in love with (played Thomas Brown while Knowshon and Danny Ware sat the bench?!?!). Incoming Malcome might be a stud – that doesn’t mean coaches have enough sense to play him.

AceDawg

A million questions, but I think the UGA offense should be very good this year if Bobo is up to the task. Young QB or not, the QB winner will have a line that should block well, receivers and tight ends that can get open short and deep, and running backs that hit the hole and rake up yards. If penalties persist, or if the offense can’t show consistency, Bobo should rightfully be in deep trouble headed to the Fall, therefore putting Richt in deep trouble too, unless…

Grantham builds new momentum on defense by showing an aggressive pass rush and players that know how to take the ball away from their opponents. It seems like every aspect of UGA’s defense needs to improve, but I like the feel of where things are headed for now.

I always go back to David Green’s performance as a red shirt freshman. He played well that year, even though it was transition season from Donnan to CMR, but I was impressed. Hopefully, one of them will step up and make a similar contribution. It certainly helps that there will be a solid offensive line, running backs, tight ends and AJ Green on the perimeter.

The biggest contributor to UGA’s struggle’s last season were turnovers. Once the team learned to cut those out, success came in bunches.

I actually excited about next year, especially the schedule. UGA’s playing a schedule similar to Florida and Alabama’s so maybe the Dawgs won’t be so beat up and stressed when they play their major rivals.

Bill, GET OFF Bobo’s back..What happened when the lights went on for our young rb’s..The offense flourished..We had questionable ability and an injured QB..AJ Green wasn’t healthy, we had fruit basket turnover amongst the OL..The D provided us with a minimal amount of turnovers..We just need solid QB play this year and we’ll be better than fine!

Still don’t understand why we didn’t use one of the freshman QB’s early on last year and get one of them some playing experience to build on for the next year. Logan Gray was a flop as a backup and Cox went from one extreme to the other as far as his ability to execute. Think I would have pulled a Terenshinski/Stafford on him and rotated Cox with one of the Freshman. What else did we have to lose last year? If we have another season like last year Bobo and Richt will use the excuse that the QB has no game experience.

Chris

January 21st, 2010

I agree with the worm. Once we committed to the run, the offense was effective. Like Parcells has often said, it’s not how many running yards you get, it’s how often you attempt to run.
Bobo still displays some questionable play calling in the red zone more than anything but execution is everything. Murray looked fluid and accurate last year for the short time he was in there. I would expect him to be named starter by second/third week of camp.

And Mikey in the SAV…YES!!! Why schedule it on the Saturday of the Masters???? Some years, I’ve been fortunate to have tickets, even if I don’t, I want to see as much as I can of it on TV..pretty sure the spring game is not on ESPN this year

Yes, Bobo is on the FIRE RED FLAMING HOT SEAT.

RB Rotation:
Coach Wooden said his team turned around when he stopped rotating players. He went on to win 10 Natl Champs after that. Georgia doesn’t play well that way. In 2007, Georgia went with Moreno and finished #3 in the country. Bobo needs to move to merit based model. Herschel didn’t rotate. Washaun Ealey is outrushing King, Walker or Moreno ypc and protects the ball far better than fumble prone King.

Pass-Heavy Play-Mix/High Risk Play Calls:
Bobo’s called a pass-heavy play mix when Georgia has struggled. This has led to problems like to’s & time of possession issues. Bobo overestimates the abilities of his QB’s and WR’s. And he calls too many high risk pass plays–throws into coverage or traffic—a lot.

I wish Nebraska had a coach as good as Richt. I am thinking Bo Pelini will be some day, but before he got there, I would have given a lot to have a Mark Richt coaching Nebraska.

Even if you do make a good case for removing Richt, who do you replace him with? There are not a lot of top tier coaches looking for jobs. Before you get rid of Richt, you better make sure you have someone in place that you KNOW can and will do the job. You know Tennessee wishes they didn’t fire Fulmer……

Get the running game established. Should not be a problem next year, all those guys are back. The QB changeover will work well if the running game is working. Give the young QB the chance to make the passing plays and if either of these kids are as good as billed we should be fine with the O. I agree with you guys who say that Bobo is no longer growing into the OC position. It is time for him to produce big time and I think he can do that.

On the defensive side I think a switch for Samuel to LB will be hugh. That kid will be all SEC. He was a monster at the position in HS. He has too much talent to rotate with King and Ealey. Put him where he can hit somebody. The new scheme will be tough to learn but at least the kids learning it will be failry new to it. I have a feeling that if Bobo and the O start putting Grantham and the D in tight spots with turnovers that Grantham will give Bobo a good kick in the a$$. I don’t think we will see anything like a “soft cover 2″ anymore at UGA. Agressive is the word.

Bobo may very well be on the hot seat or if you look at it kind of like the Saban , Smart situation is bobo anything more than a puppet and Richt the puppet master , that is the perception many have of smart , and maybe bobo to a lesser extent only because UGA is not on the level of ALA,or FLA, so if bobo doesn’t produce is heat on richt. Does Grantham get a one year pass because of the mess I don’t think when you make 750000.00 you even get one day off much less a year. That means Richt should be held to the same standard and produce . All that dribble being said I am satisfied with CMR and happy to have him at UGA and if he has another bad year I still hope he stays , but maybe he should take a pay cut if he doesnt produce results on the field .

With a new QB with basically zero experience, Bobo will have some charity thrown his way. If the whole team isn’t clicking in every aspect of the game in 2011, however, there will be some hard questions to answer. But I think we should be pretty good by then. Whether we can keep up with the Bama and Gator juggernauts by then is hard to say. The deck is stacked against us somewhat, but at least SOME years we should be able to win the SEC (and thus be in the running for a BCS title game).

During the Richt Era at UGA, one thing has been a constant in all seasons that were a success : POSITIVE TURNOVER MARGIN. In years where UGA made it to the SEC Championship Game and/or the Sugar Bowl (2007, 2005, 2003, 2002) UGA’s turnover margins were +9, +11, +11, and +8, respectively. All other years, UGA’s TO Margin was negative (-16 in 2009,-3 in 2008,-1 in 2006,-2 in 2004 and-3 in 2001). I know this is not a groundbreaking analysis, I just thought it was interesting to see the way it worked out.

Need the Strength and Conditioning program to put more emphasis on conditioning; strength has been good, but conditioning may be more important.

Kick coverage needs improvement.
Coach MB needs to not “give up” on the run as quickly.

Bobo doe not have the experience as other top tier coaches …..He is not multi-dimensional in his play-calling…… The offence is much too predictable……. Teams watch film and on first down -its a run up the gut 90% of the time…..First down is the time for play action and high percentage pass for close to first down or even more……………. On third down and long,he’ll throw a bomb……. You have to keep a defense off balance and guessing all the game…………………….

Zach Mettenberger, with his arm & height, may be the better starter – at least in the beginning. Also, the short pass just over the line is usually good for a few quick yards, but, moreover, it builds confidence and accuracy with the QB. It should be the 2nd or 3rd check-down on every pass play. It will open up things down field, too!

DAWG ED, actually I have heard just the opposite; that Murray is the most mentally prepared to start but Mettenberger has more upside with size and arm. No matter who, one of them should have seen the field at least some last year. If they are as good as touted, they won’t be around for 4 years anyway.

I agree, its CMR’s mess! It still falls on the man at the top. Move Richard Samuel to linebacker, move Gray to wideout and no kick returns. continue to alternate king and ealey on a game by game basis.

Aaron Murray and Mettenburger should compete heavily for the starting QB job. Matson will be 3rd string and Gray will 4th as worst case senario.

Bro we have no worries about Murray’s health. He broke his leg got hit really hard it happens. He’s injuries aren’t like Trintant Studivant’s.. Also he came back his senior year in Highschool to lead his team to a State Championship with a cast still on his leg. The kid plays with a lot of passion has a good head on his shoulder. He’s a winner. I will be surprised come the Fall that Murray isn’t our QB and Sophomore Junior year be in the Heisman race with his buddy from HS Orson Charles ( mind you we wouldn’t have Charles if Murray didn’t recruit him to Georgia) AJ Green, King, the freshman Reciever coming in, Marlon Brown… I get chills just thinking about the next few years. If Richt hits the mark this year and wisn the East and goes to the Dome and loses………..UGA grads ( the kye ) will think it a good to great year. Then, if he wins it all in 2011 ( SEC champs ) and stumbles abit in 2012 and then hits his stride again in 2013, it will be exactly what UGA fans ( grads only count ) want for the program.

UGA fans do not expect that mythical NC but it would be nice but hey, who besides UGA finished # 2 in 07??? THAT is better than all the other major schools, except the NC that year. See?

UGA fans ( grads ) are not eaten up with the smae attitudes regarding a NC that are displayed on this blog.

Kwaeme Geathers is the name to watch next year at NG. Currently about 330 and will probably go up to 340 by seasons start. Players say he was unstoppable on the scout team last year and would have started but Sweet Willie wanted to let his seniors get their time to shine. Which is one reason he is gone. Anyways, K Geathers will be our Mt Cody next year.

I think that Richt will be more involved on the O side of the ball this year. I think he was behind the Tech game plan. I think he got tired of people saying that he can’t coach and he took to task with the no pass game against the bees. The man can coach and with a rejuvenated D, a well stocked offense and two of the best kickers in the country, in the enitre freaking country people, things look good for next year and great for the year after (I hope).

April 10 cannot get here soon enough. Richard Samuel should be a fit as a mad dog type linebacker that can provide a pass rush from the outside and has the speed to drop back as a nickle back in the nickle package. The 3-4 defense gives players the opportunity to do different types of tech. and stunts depending on what the other teams offense is trying to do against it. I look foward to seeing a much more aggresive defense this year with DBs that can lay the wood to wide outs. The tackling and discpline will be much improved on this team. I thik that Murray will the starter but i can also see Zack getting playing much like Green and DJ did or even more like Ray Goff and Matt Robinson each of these tandums won an sec championship no reason Aaron and Zack cant do the same.

I’m not sure the college 3-4 HAS to have a 340-350 pound stud nose guard. To quote Elaine from Seinfeld “Now, don’t get me wrong it would be nice… I mean I’m not going to sit here and say it wouldn’t be nice.”

Tyson could turn out to be the solution there, but I think you can have a successful college 3-4 if you can just get a big strong NG that can engage 2 offensive lineman for a couple of seconds on each snap (easier said than done). I’m not sure they have to be an all world performer if the rest of the D is well coached and talented.

gdawginkalamazoo, I think he was involved last year in the offense, that’s why he didn’t fire Bobo. When he was at FSU they ran a simlilar offense to UF’s with Charlie Ward and Dunn. Even when he first got here with David Green UGA ran a lot out of the shotgun. Now with the talent he has he seems to be going back to the power I.

No I sense that CMR has handed more and more off to Bobo and the seasons have reflected it. I did feel CMR called the first half at GT but mid 3 Qtr it was very typical of UGA the past few years and GT started to come back.

For those claiming UGA grads do not expect a national title (which is not mythical) this is correct but they do expect to atleast to go .500 against UF. Also I witnessed a few intense arguments over Bobo’s play calling and plenty of snide comments about taking odds on what the next play call would be and this is in lower level season tickets.

OK….I was hoping to see some posts in favor of Richt. My posting name should really say “Why are SOME Georgia fans so dumb?”
To address some comments:

Contrary to what some of you are saying, I still see and hear a large number of UGA fans unhappy with Richt. It may be true those are fans of other schools looking to make UGA fans look dumb…..Maybe.

Solich was run off by an idiot AD at Nebraska.

Nebraska was not hosed in the Big XII championship game. They kicked the ball out of bounds on the kick off, allowing Texas to start on the 40. They allowed a big play that put Texas in FG position. Take away one of those two errors and the clock would not have been an issue.

I know a lot of UT fans that wanted Fulmer gone, but quietly wish they had not been so quick to get rid of him. Starting over yet again……

The above is true for any team in todays NCAA football. It is far more competitive and staying on top is far more difficult. Judge a program for it’s last 10 years, not it’s last season. Also, don’t believe the recruiting rankings. Those guys can be just as wrong as the NFL scouts can be about college talent.

Whats most important is we enjoy football and not let it run our lives.

Some people try to find things in this game that don’t exist but football is only two things – blocking and tackling. – Vince Lombardi

The 3 secrets to winning football games:

1.)Run the football – Being able to run the football is absolutely necessary to winning. If you can successfully do this you control the clock keeping your own defense rested on the sideline and the opposing offense off the field. This also cuts down 1 type of turnover, the interception. To be able to run the football successfully you need big, ugly, nasty, yet smart linemen, and good running backs. Both UGA and Tech have the backs, but I think Tech is sorely lacking in the big linemen department.

2.) Stop the run. Again you need big nasty linemen and fast linebackers that hit like an anvil. UGA- check but needs to wrap up, Tech – see #1.

3.) Play sound on special teams. UGA has two great kickers, good return men, no more Fabris. Must hold on to the ball. Tech – average kickers at best, don’t know enough about the other things to say.

Otto

Chazzo, Agreed turnovers and fundamentals (especially on defense, chest bumps and arm tackles) hurt. Yes without those problems UGA would be solid but not great and likely another loss to UF and Bama if they were on the schedule.

Nebraska, I judge CMR in 2 parts before Bobo was OC and after. BVG leaving as DC was close enough to the same time. He is still figuring out how to be a CEO.

UT maybe in for a long rebuilding process but I have not heard anyone seriously want Fulmer back as anything other than AD (which is understandable given the hire of Lane and demands that kept Cutcliffe from returning). Rumor is if Dooley fails Fulmers comes in as AD and brings back Cutcliffe if he isn’t to old by then, which sounds very much like something that happened at your school.

3) Beat Florida
4) Inspire our guys during the off season to work harder than ever
5) Off season conditioning plan so we don’t lose the 4th quarter in 2010 like we did in 2009. Copnditoning plan worked 2002-2008, not in 2009.
6) Moving to a merit-based philosophy so guys work harder–stop the favoritism–reward objective performance–STOP ROTATING MEDIOCRE PLAYERS–THEY DO NOT DESERVE IT–THEY HAVE NOT EARNED IT!!
7) Get a better plan for Special teams–Meyer plays Freshmen–requires them to prove themselves on special teams BEFORE they earn a starting position
8) Run the ball for 225 yards a game, even when people know we’re coming
9) Play guys REGARDLESS of their AGE or YEARS ON THE TEAM—based on MERIT/PERFORMANCE ONLY–move away from the “blind-loyalty” policy. Start a lot of freshman if that’s how it pans out. Put your best talent on the field.

Being a coach is kind of like being a preacher, half the congregation loves the preacher, the other half wants him fired. Many were saying that Richt would never fire coach Willie, it wasn’t untill the deed was done that we leared Richt was unhappy with the D last year. Richt seems to be very deliberate, which is not a bad thing in a head coach. Make rash decisions and you wind up with a Kiffin! As for next year, a new QB and a new defense sound exciting. I think Murray will get the nod, but I have read that Mett has made some real strides. He has gotten his weight down to 235 and they say he seems much quicker, so he may give Murray a real battle. Just to remind the crazy Dawg fans out there(most UGA fans know the truth) there was no popularity contest in 07. Dawgs finished with two losses which was great but were tied in the East with the Vols who beat the Dawgs that year so the Vols won the tiebreaker. No popularity contest there, just the rules. So why would UGA be in the title game after not winning the East and not playing in the SEC title game, we won’t even say they didn’t win it because they were not even there. So the title game was LSU(SEC Champion) vs. Ohio State(Big 10 Champion).

My biggest concern is Bobo.
1: Can he develop players? Joe Cox and the vast majority of the experienced O-line’s performance last season say no. Stafford developed somewhat, but he was already uber-talented. Same with Moreno and Green.
2: Can he call plays? Sometimes, but Bobo seems to get into inexplicable ruts. Texas A&M first half, the OK State game–terrible offensive play-calling against two HORRIBLE defenses. We can’t afford to have this sort of performance. I think we’ll have to learn the hard way that we need better than Bobo to compete with Florida and Bama.

Micheal Moore never kept anybody off the field in the little time he did gets. I don’t even see the argument here. Who, when? And you didn’t think MM was a good player in the limited role he played. I did. And since we are on the subject, didn’t a freshman WR keep Moore, a Jr, from getting a lot more reps last year? Seems like it.

The fact that Bryan Evans was out there is self-explainatory that there obviously wasn’t anyone better. Scary, but had there been anyone remotely better, why wouldn’t he have been out there? Who should have been?

BTW, Its very easy to name a bunch of underclassmen that played over more senior players. All over the place. I can think of a handfull without even looking it up. Is that blind loyalty just a random policy? Or maybe it’s BS, and there is more to the story. Might not agree with the coaches accessments of abilities at times, but its silly to say they played folks simply out of loyalty, not performance (as they define it). Silly

11 SEC Championships or SEC Tournament Championships for Andy Landers at UGA, and that is 2nd Best in The SEC, the Nation’s Premier Women’s Basketball Conference forever – like Football.

Janet Harris, 4-Time Consensus All-America.

Teresa Edwards won her 1st Gold Medal in 1984, and is the 1st Woman or Man to compete in 5 Olympics in Basketball. Teresa Edwards Won her 4th Gold Medal in 2000.

Katrina McClain competed in 3 Olympics with Teresa Edwards winning the Gold Medal in 1988 and 1996 together as the Backbone of the U.S. Olympics Team.

Recently the vols have had Superior Basketball Teams under Pat Summitt, but the games were not decided until the final basket really ever in the history between Andy Landers and Pat Summitt.

National Coach of the Year 4 times, Andy Landers is a lot of fun to watch coach.

31 All-America UGA Players Andy Landers recruited here.

57 All-SEC Academic Honor Roll, Andy Landers’ Student-Athletes are much better than Georgia tek’s in the classroom, and always have been. These 57 All-SEC Academic Honor Roll players for Andy Landers are in fact his 57 Best Players.

They all Graduate.

Andy Landers so far this year has beat Georgia tek again (he’s Never Lost to Georgia tek in Athens, and sports a haughty 29-3 Record Head-to-Head against Georgia tek), Oklahoma, Rutgers, Virginia, Kentucky and Pat Summitt’s Tennessee Lady vols, and all 6 of them are Top 25 teams.

He will play another 10 Top 25 teams before the end of the season, and 4 of those are coming up now against 4 Ranked SEC Teams.

With their new D coordinator, the Dawgs should easily have the best D in the SEC east, maybe even better than Bama, since they are losing 9 starters. If bobo comes through with better work, UGA can win the SEC–mark it down! The key games are florida and tennessee, which the Dawgs should win easy, since both teams will be way down in 2010!!! The Dawgs upset bama in the SEC title game–bet the house!

Oh now, plenty of folks were talking about coach Andy Landers before now. Remember? How he was a huge failure and needed to be fire a long time ago.

Auburn or the vols, Alabama, or LSU – they all have the advantage over us and you can add in Florida has the advantage obviously too.

5 SEC Rivalry games and we are on the Losing End of all 5. They all 5 SEC teams OWN UGA.

QB is important, and there may be some stumbling and grumbling early on. I am more concerned about the D-line. Of course, it is probably good that the new coach with the new scheme has young guys to mold.

Bobo Should Have Gone First

This was CMR’s mess that has been building for a long time.. 3-4 years.

Unfortunately, I can’t see Mark turning this thing around. I have very little confidence remaining in him. I say that due to less talent on defense and an under performing offense, UGA will go 5-7 next year.

Mark needs to take one of those missions for a long time and let Will Muschamp come to UGA as head coach and bring Kirby as the DC. Hire Leach from TT as the OC.

Good luck in Argentina or Nigeria Mark.. Maybe Bobo can go with you. Maybe you and Bobo an go to Syria or Lebenon and try to bring peace rather than war to that part of the world.

The Ladydogs knocked off the #3 team in the country. UGA put 7700 people in the stands. See what happens when the UGA students & grads support a team? Now if you UGA people will get off your cheap butts and support Fox and the men’s team the same thing will happen. But only if you grads get in the stands first. The better high school players are not going to college to play in front of a high school crowd.

But, like Bill King, you will probably continue to focus on football
in January.

The disgrace for you Dawg fans is that I am a Tech fan but I am the biggest fan of UGA basketball on this blog.

AltamahaDawg – I wouldn’t construe it as “blind” loyalty but I do think loyalty to the upperclassmen who’ve paid their dues is a consideration because it helps set the tone for stability in the program. However, I think it was clear that last year, at least in the second half of the season, that Rambo was a better safety than Evans.

All of u on the Bobo’s-on-the-hot-seat bandwagon…re-read Tommy P…
“….Quick question….which team led the conference in scoring in SEC games?

Georgia….”

It was more the turnovers and bad-timing penalties than bad play-calling. As mentioned, TO’s and penalties leave the D in bad field pos and keep on the field too long.

An inexperienced QB could very well be problematic…be it Mett or Murray or Gray.

Thanks Geoff. FINALLY! Someone with some actual comment that is based on something.

Senior DO usually know more than freshmen and as a general rule you would expect them to be playing more. Folks seem to want to make that some kind of a bad idea.

You are right about this in particular being a good example of experience winning out over talent. I’m not sure that’s wrong to be honest, and that was not the thing I was railing against. As you point out, Rambo not starting over Evans is a far cry from blind loyalty. Still have yet to hear an example of that.

I would never argue that Evans was getting it done. I would never be convinced that Rambo was overall a better choice though. Boykin and Smith played at times over more senority, so clearly its not about class. There must have been more to the story. And that part we would not have known about. Weren’t there all week. One thing is that I dont think it was clear the entire second half of the season. Maybe right towards the end, a couple of games, he did start getting enough reps to show promise.

I’ve always considered safety one of those positions that only gets noticed when you get burned. Evans got burned, (and he make a few plays) but as a percentage of playcount during the game, maybe he was more stable than it appeared. I don’t know. It could also be that of playing too many younguns at one time, the Brand’ns were more important, and they had to find spots to work Rambo. Maybe Evans was more valuable to Boykin, who needed really be out there.

I am proud of him graduating, I can tell you that.

CMR is a great coach and UGA is very, very fortunate to have him. He will do just fine this year.

If there is STILL NOT a clear leader for the QB position by now, wellllll it’s going to be another long season. There is no way that, after the QB play of last year, there isn’t a clear cut leader; if not then good luck. I agree that you have to run the ball, but let’s enter the 21 st, or at least the 20th, century. Passing the ball sets up the running game and vice-versa. If you have a good smart, heady QB, w/ a strong arm, then you can move the ball just as well w/ slants, quick in & outs, etc. How many good DB’s do you think anyone team has, even in the SEC.
HS, college, the pro’s all have gone to one form or another of a spread offense and yet there are diehards thinking that there will be a second coming of H. Walker. Have you looked at what you have at receiver; Green, Charles, White, Wooten, Brown, Troupe, Lynch, etc.
For the 2010 season so far there are 8 TE’s, 6 WR’s, 4 Flkr’s, 3 RB’s & 6 FB’s on the roster. Pending some super pick-ups this off season, then sure it looks like UGA is set for some inside the tackle running and more moving the ball through the air.
If Murray can live up to his press clippings and be the “Aaron-matic” he has been with the pigskin, then this team will be playing for the SEC and NC the next few years. UGA will be the envy of the nation w/ this offense, and this coming from someone who isn’t even a UGA fan, but is a fan of the guys from Florida. Let’s hope your coaches don’t get in the way.
