Grantham’s aggressive style pleases this Dawg fan

Todd Grantham is saying all the right things so far. (Dallas Morning News)

Todd Grantham is saying all the right things so far. (Dallas Morning News)

Like most UGA fans, I’ve been closely parsing Todd Grantham’s initial words about his defensive plans for the Dogs, and so far I like what I hear.

Now, granted, in the recent past there’s often been a disconnect between what we hear and what we end up seeing on the field. Remember all the talk last summer about Joe Cox’s accuracy and how Bryan Evans was coming into his own at safety?

And while the lion’s share of the focus is likely to be on Grantham’s plans to go with three defensive linemen and four linebackers, instead of the opposite under Willie Martinez, the scheme wasn’t always the problem under Martinez. Too often, the Dogs showed poor fundamentals when it came to tackling and getting off blocks. I’m anxious to see how that (hopefully) improves under Grantham.

But what I particularly liked, though, was Grantham’s very first promise in the prepared statement UGA released announcing his hiring: “To the fans and boosters of the University of Georgia, I understand the passion and standard of excellence expected. I look forward to developing an aggressive, physical, attacking style defense that offenses will not look forward to playing against.”

I wanted to jump to my feet and holler “Hallelujah!”

As Gen. George Patton once said, “Nobody ever defended anything successfully; there is only attack and attack and attack some more.”

One of the most frustrating things about the Georgia defense under Martinez was its soft zones and read-and-react philosophy. Too often, the reading took so long that the reaction came too late. Thus a team like Tennessee could take a simple offensive plan like play-action and devastate the Georgia defense.

It was notable that when the makeshift defensive staff simplified the schemes and reduced the number of reads for the Independence Bowl game, the defense played much better.

And don’t get me started on the way Martinez’s defense often left the middle of the field wide open — a real problem if there wasn’t much pressure on the quarterback.

Now, I’m not expecting miracles from Grantham in his first season. Georgia will have back six of the 11 defensive players who started the bowl game, so there’ll be an experience gap in addition to learning new schemes.

But the new defensive coordinator’s emphasis on a Nick Saban-style attacking defense that rushes the passer constantly and puts a premium on busting into the backfield quickly to disrupt the offense makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. It’s just how I like to see the game played, and it’s obviously done wonders for Saban.

I’m also encouraged that Grantham sounds flexible. One of the most frequent complaints I heard about Martinez was that he tried to play his base defense no matter what the other team was doing, and he was slow to adjust. Says Grantham: “We’re always going to match personnel or have the ability to match personnel, meaning if someone adds a third wideout in the game, we can add an extra DB in the game. We could end up playing multiple fronts out of that nickel package whether it be four down or three down and kind of go that route.”

I would assume that also means that if a team has a strong inside running game, the offensive attack that the 3-4 alignment is most vulnerable to, Grantham will adjust accordingly.

Another thing the new DC said Friday that pleased me was that he likes to evaluate his players “one through 50″ and “find a way to get your top players on the field, because to be an aggressive attacking style of defense and to make plays, you have got to have playmakers.” I would hope that would mean we wouldn’t see any more situations like this past season, where a defensive player continued to start long after it was obvious his backup was better.

What also caught my eye was Grantham saying “what you want as a defense, after the game is over [is] the team you just played are so happy they don’t have to play you anymore. In order to do that I think it takes great conditioning and I think it takes great preparation.” I’m wondering how all the questions about the effectiveness of Georgia’s conditioning program (which Buck Belue cited as one of the supposed reasons Kirby Smart turned the job down) will play into that. If there’s an aspect of the program that Mark Richt still needs to address besides overall discipline, it’s probably strength and conditioning.

But that’s a discussion for another day. Right now visions of stunts and blitzes and sacks and fumbles are dancing in my head, and I’m ready to see the old “GATA” slogan that Richt cited Friday once again become the ruling mindset Between the Hedges!

Well put Bill. From what we hear at this point, is it safe to say that we also need to give our coach a little credit for once again not going into panic mode like I did when the search went on longer than we wanted? Richt’s IMAGE in that he’s too nice. It probably stems from links to Richt’s faith. But, men in the Bible were not meek and mild. You got David, who cut off Goliath’s head and paraded it through the city. Jesus stood up to the enemies of good and called them names and cracked a whip through the temple. Moses killed a guy. Joshua was a warrior. John the Baptist ate bugs for breakfast and lived in the wild outdoors.

In a mighty tug of war between the financially and athletically powerful SEC and the traditionally academic ACC it was agreed that Georgia State would join the SEC and Vanderbilt would switch to the ACC.

I love hearing Grantham say “evaluate our player’s one through 50 and find a way to get your top players on the field, because to be an aggressive attacking style of defense and to make plays, you have got to have playmakers.” That was the problem with CWM as David Pollack tweeted we had the guys to run the 3-4 last season but NO CWM stuck with the “do what we do” philosophy. Nothing wrong with that if you have the players to do it but if injuries or other factors lead to your personnel being better suited for something different then you do that! Being multiple on offense & defense gives you the opportunity to change the way you’re playing as needed. For example on O we have the ability to go one back, 2 or 3 WRs & 1-3 TEs or stay in the I, or go to a spread pro based O etc. On D CWM used situational changes & tried blitzes but wouldn’t change base formations to best suit the current state of the D. Given the quote I think Grantham will be more flexible but will stay true to his scheme by always being aggressive no matter how the personnel is deployed. That means he’ll get our best 11 defenders on the field & GATA! GO DAWGS!

Bill, every thing you brought up is dead on what the problem has been. Most dawg fans have been asking the same question for 3 years. My next question is does Grantham have the depth to make the changes. I hope Richt doesn’t have to raid the offense to provide enough fast skilled players. The Freshmen quarterbacks are going to need all the protection they can get until they they get enough playing time and experience. To bad they didn’t get that playing time in 2009 season, even though both had entered school early.

You seriously thought the defense play “much better” in the independance bowl? And you specifically could tell that was from a simplified game plan? Interesting. I would say our defense had several games where they played better last season than that, against better teams. And inexplicable worse than that on others, but its questionable if that was due to an overly complicated plan.. And I doubt that this NFL coach is really bringing simplicity to town. The 3-4 to me seems more complicated if anything.

And Joe Cox didnt struggle with accuracy. He just didnt always make the best decision. To be fair, nobody ever told us he could carry the team on his shoulders. If you want to talk about broken promises, how about the one about having a competant O-line going in?

And B. Evans, well, …….he seemed like a nice young man.

I will say one thing for this Grantham guy, he takes directions well. Richt handed him a piece of paper that said “use the word agressive, and bring up blitzing 3 times” before he took the pondium.

But I think its going to be more a matter of energy and attitude. BVG didnt run anything close to what Grantham is describing.

I thought about the 3-4 last summer, even suggesting that D on these blogs. I could not think of a good nose guard in UGA’s stable of DTs so I let the idea drop. Now I think that Geathers could be utilized at NG and possibly Harmon could be switched back to defense. Arby Jones has the frame to add more weight and could be a possibilty. Bill mentioned that a strong running game could move the ball against the 3-4, that is why NG is the key to that defense. The LBs get all the glory in the 3-4, but it’s that big ugly on the Center’s nose that drives the wagon. I was not one of the mob screaming for Willies head on a pole, but he lost tons of credibility with me in the UT game. I saw a 5′9″CB staring into the UT backfield and letting a WR run right by him. UT had some strong, physical running backs, I don’t know what in the hell Boykin thought he would do with one of those RBs if he caught him. The 3-4 is a good D with so many teams using some kind of spread formations in todays CFB and should be successful, if a quality NG can be found.

I saw where Grantham said he would look at the talent and rank it 1-50 and get the best players on the field.I can’t go 50 deep but I figured I’d take a stab at my own top 20.I’m sure a few of the freshmen will impact this list by September but as far as who we have right now here goes..

1.Boykin-Could be AA in 10
2.Houston-Blossoming star
3.Dowtin-Will have all SEC year
4.Rambo-Looks ready to shine in 10
5.Smith-Heading for break out year at CB
6.Washington-May end up no 1 on the list by Dec
7.Gamble-Up to 265 I hear…has talent should be stout inside
8.Tyson-Earned playing time with 3 NFL prospects ahead of him
9.Dent-Injured most of season.Toughness was missed.made impact in games played.
10.Dobbs-solid player..nothing flashy but smart and plays hard and sound.
11.C.Robinson-Aggressive…moves well…surprised me this year…looks ready to play
12.Cuff-Like Dobbs…solid nothing flashy
13.M.Robinson-Has potential.if he gets his head on straight we have a player.
14.Wood-This kid has talent and burst…undersized but effective…
15.Williams-Haven’t found his place yet…new scheme could be good for him
16.Cummings-Big physical corner…should see a lot of PT
17.Gillard-Made plays on special teams
18.Jones-Got in on some snaps at DT as well.solid prospect
19.Tripp-What do we do with Kiante?Hope we figure it out this season.
20.Hebron-Injured most of career..hear he’s healthy…could be fresh start.

Well that’s my best assessment I was tempted to put Geathers in the top 20 but I wanted to focus on the kids who got some playing time last season. When you toss him in there with Samuel(maybe) and some of these heralded recruits this list could be totally different by Dec as I said. What you guys think…Who’s too high?too low?

Mike Bobo is Clueless

January 16th, 2010
3:33 pm

Probably Bobo’s agent circulating that rumor about L Tech. Bobo had a TERRIBLE 2009, no college football team would POSSIBLY be interested in letting him be the Head guy.

Likely going to be Gus M, OC at Aubrun, who’s had top ranked offenses everywhere he’s been consistently.

Hoever, I would absolutely LOVE IT if Bobo went to play for someone else, I’d prefer it to be as OC in the SEC, since we all know how bad he is.

Hopefully, Mark Richt will resume play calling duties in 2010. Richt’s OC skills are unmatched, Richt helped FSU get to 5 Natl champs. Bobo is in over his head. Let him be the QB coach. Bobo turned the ball over too much in 2009, Mark Richt can’t afford to have that happen in 2010.

Hopefully, soneone at AJC can ask Mark Richt about this.

Mike Bobo is Clueless

January 16th, 2010
4:24 pm

Bobo ranked worse than the defense nationally, so I was little surprised Martinez got canned, and Bobo got a pass. Not sure why, it was a hideous 2009 offensively. Bobo did get better as the year went on, FINALLY starting to run the ball and won like 4 out of the last 5 games. So there was improvement. But I still don’t think Bobo has a clue what factors cause success or failure for Richt. Bobo is really stubborn, doesn’t flexibility and change much, not very adaptable.

4 Examples:
1- Richt almost never loses when Richt gets a 100 yard rusher, but Bobo almost never has a 100 yard rusher.
2- Bobo doesn’t put playmakers on the field, even when they average 1 yard a carry vs. 12 yards a carry. Bobo doesn’t coach by merit, it’s by favoritism.
3- Bobo also has a tendency to call more passing plays than running plays when the best in the SEC (Flo/Bama) call 65% run.
4- Bobo overvalues the wrong skills-for example, for a RB, Bobo thinks passblocking skills are more important than yards per carry or fumbles.

Richt didn’t want to fire Bobo AND Willie in the same year, too much change, so we’ll probably have to wait until 2010 and another 20 offensive to’s/giveaways for Bobo to be fired.

Mike Bobo is clueless.

The philosophy of players continuing to start long after it is obvious that some backups are better comes from Mark “FAKE JUICE” Richt himself. Ok. Y’all keep talking about Bobo. Yes, he has some questionable calls sometimes, but have you looked at the points we have put up. Do y’all remember Stafford/Moreno, and even Cox and them put up a lot. Yes, turnovers are a problem, but the correct guy got fired. Bobo’s offense have been scoring just fine. Also, we did quite a few more trick plays this year that actually worked i.e. Branden Smith. The only thing that worries me is that he will not properly use Aaron Murray. Besides that, Bobo has secured his job for at least another year. However, I would be ok with Richt taking back over. I mean he is an offensive genius.

Everyone should go to georgiadogs.com and listen to the press conference from Friday afternoon. In a matter of minutes, it’s apparent, Willie Martinez isn’t in Grantham’s league. Grantham understands what CMR is looking for, the expectation of the fan base, and really sounds like he knows how to match-up personnel so the D has the advantage. One piece of the puzzle left, filling the two remaining D coaching positions. By mid-season 2010, if not sooner, we should be miles ahead of Willie’s best days at UGA. Great pick CMR.

Dawg Tired

January 16th, 2010
7:32 pm

Bill – while I firmly believe a 3-4 is the way to go in this day of speed, speed, and more speed, you are right on in being excited about Coach Grantham emphasizing an aggressive defense. It does not matter what the scheme is if you don’t pressure these high-powered offenses. Erk Russell understood you have to attack, attack, and attack back in his day of six man fronts against many teams. Scheme is not nearly an important as aggression when it comes to playing defense. Why Willie couldn’t understand that is beyond my comprehension. Of course, it is also puzzling why our head coach didn’t step in ad say to Willie, “Let’s Get After Their Asses!” After all, isn’t that our mantra? Mantra is meaningless unless implemented.

South Ga Dawg 88…that’s a pretty comprehensive, thumbnail sketch. Won’t criticize any Dawg player publicly, but I’d knock one in the secondary off and replace…with a couple of unproven guys. Sanders Commings looks rock solid and Quentin Banks is one of the HARDEST hitters on the team. Injuries have just been really unkind to him. I went to the Vandy game in Nashville. Late in the game, he leveled a guy reminiscent of a Greg Blue/Thomas Davis nuclear shot. If Banks is healthy, look for #31. He’s the guy that will make a receiver fear coming across the middle. Good football speed.

He played against Tech as well. He would flourish in a 3-4. Turn him loose. Makiri Pugh will make a mark. Roderick Battle, if he’s back, will play a lot. That guy was playing as soon as he got here. Agree on just about every other assessment. Brandon Wood is a player. Justin Houston will rocket up draft boards…hope he stays two more years.

Kiante Tripp would be nice in the middle..or a huge D- end. Any word on John Knox?

DEFENSE :

The 4-3 just did not fit our personnel. And, frankly, we played our players out of position to even play a 4-3.

We just lost 6 of the 11 Starters on Defense, and frankly all but Rennie Curran really did not have the kind of UGA career that they wanted to have here. We lost more than just 6 Starters on Defense. We lost 3 Defensive Tackles Geno Atkins, Jeff Owens and Kade Weston. We also lost Reshad Jones, Bryan Evans and Prince Miller, typically burned on every pass – all 3. We also lost Marcus Washington and Darius Dewberry.

Alec Ogletree will be on the field on the Opening Defensive Series. We needed this type player last year, and now we have him, finally. Todd Grantham will make a star out of Alec Ogletree.

Jakar Hamilton will be great back there in the Secondary with Alec Ogletree. This is a huge improvement over what we have had prior to Todd Grantham. Reshad Jones and Bryan Evans just didn’t get the job done back there like Alec and Jakar will.

TJ Stripling DE will make the rotation in his true freshman season. The 2nd best football player in the State of Georgia and 4th Best Defensive End in the nation, TJ Stripling out of Decatur, will only play here 3 years. Equate this into All-America and maybe even with all the DE ahead of him this up-coming season, this season. This is a Star.

Justin Houston is a great All-SEC Defensive End for us. He will either play 1 or 2 years for Todd Grantham.

Demarcus Dobbs is going to be an All-SEC Defensive End again next season, as I know he was this last season.

Branden Smith will do far better than Prince Miller at Cornerback in his career, now as the Starter taking over for Miller. Mike Bobo did a very poor job of getting Branden Smith quality touches on Offense this season. It was like he just did those few plays to appease Branden Smith, not to let him Shine, like he should have.

Brandon Boykin is a Beast at the other Cornerback. I firmly believe we are in good hands at the Starting Positions in the Secondary, and Brandon Boykin is a load to try to tackle on the returns, as he just bounces off guys.

Bacarri Rambo has been a crowd favorite since the day we Signed him here. He is a big play player in the Secondary with a nose for the ball.

Now, the part everyone will talk about with an aggressive 3-4. You see ? The Defense is really quite good this coming season, getting rid of a load of players who frankly never did a thing but Start for us, and then get beat in the Secondary.

Darryl Gamble is a huge big man in the middle.

Marcus Dowtin is a great football player with more mobility to be a play-maker at linebacker than Darryl Gamble. The 3-4 rotation will NOT have these 2 players 1 behind the other at the same position. Obviously, Darryl Gamble and Marcus Dowtin are 2 completely different players, pigeon-holed both at the same position in a 4-3 all last season. What a total waste to not have them both on the field at the same time. These 2 are getting split up in the 3-4 since obviously Todd Grantham has already said that he ranks the players and then gets his play-makers both of these guys are both on the field. There is 45 lbs. difference between Darryl Gamble and Marcus Dowtin. Those are not the same players for the same position. Gamble will be inside and Dowtin outside.

Akeem Dent only got to play 8 games, 4 as starter last season.

Demetre Baker 4.4 outside linebacker might get to shine with sacks this year, from Florida.

Deon Rogers 4.4 outside linebacker might get to shine with sacks this year, from Florida.

6 Florida Recruits we get in 2 weeks’ time now. 6.

And, they all 6 are on the Defensive Side of the Ball, except for the Number 9 Offensive Linemen in the Country Brent Benedict.

Brandon Wood will get moved way up in the Rotation, and he has to come through for Todd Grantham. I expect Todd to spend a lot of time right here with this guy to get him to shine this season for us. Brandon Wood only had 2 QB hurries, 1 break-up, and no sack as a DE in the 4-3. He is too big for DE in college, NFL is a long ways off for Brandon Wood, at this point. I believe with the graduation of 3 DT, Brandon Wood will be asked to play a more natural DT in the 3-4. He is 300 lbs. Since when does a 300 lbs. Defensive Lineman get sacks from DE ? This is 1 of many mismatches of our personnel in the 4-3 having this big guy trying to get sacks at DE. He got zero sacks. Duh.

DeAngelo Tyson is also going to be counted upon a lot more this season too. You cannot look at this 3-4, and not recognize that DeAngelo and Brandon have to come through for us at DT right now this season.

Abry Jones made some huge big plays for us at DT this last season. These guys have to step up for the 3 NFL Defensive Tackles we just graduated. I believe that there is a basis here that these 3 must be asked to step it up. The season likely will hinge on their ability to do just that.

Garrison Smith out of Atlanta is the 5th best player in the State of Georgia and the 3rd best Defensive Tackle in the Nation. While he might benefit from a Redshirt Year bulking up for DT in The SEC, this guy plays here 3 years. You cannot have that type of talent and tell them, you Redshirt. This “Tough Love” or Rodney Garner of this type of DT in the past, will be tempered in the short term by Todd Grantham who will not be here forever, himself – not as DC in college for any amount of money. There is just too much money in the NFL, and he was demoted from Cleveland Browns DC to DL at Dallas. Garrison Smith gets on the field in Game 1.

Jalen Fields

Dexter Morant

These 2 guys at DE might fight it out to see which gets into the rotation in Game 1 at DE. They are both big guys with Jalen having quite a bit of speed. Jalen might get moved in the 3-4 to outside linebacker, right ? And, frankly, Dexter might get moved to Inside Linebacker in a 3-4. There are 2 versatile players who have a real penchant for making plays. They just need to be in the right scheme and then in the right position.

TODD GRANTHAM :

Todd looked at what I just looked at for you, and determined he has a short-term capability to get back to DC in the NFL by huge improvements. There is no comparison between what we have this up-coming year on Defense and what we had last year. Thank God, those guys are gone.

SPECIAL TEAMS :

Obviously, we are in good shape Kicking.

Drew Butler

Blair Walsh

Those are the 2 Best Kickers on 1 team in America.

Assigning the responsibilities of special teams’ coaches will be critical since Coach Richt NEVER DID DO that all last season.

God, I hated Jon Fabris.

Todd Grantham needs to be the kick-off coverage special teams coach. Anything other than that, and this will be another long season. We suck at Kick-Off Special Teams.

We better get our other coaches hired, and then FIRE THE ENTIRE OFFENSIVE COACHING STAFF, EVERY ONE OF THE JERKS WASTING OUR TALENT ON OFFENSE LIKE THEY CONTINUE TO DO AND HAVE A ZERO OFFENSE LIKE THEY CONTINUE TO DO AND NOT RECOGNIZE OUR PLAYER AND INSTEAD REDSHIRT OUR BEST PLAYERS LIKE THEY ALWAYS DO.

OFFENSE :

Fire every coach on offense and do it before the Opening Day Kick-Off.

On the Offensive Side of the football, we lost nothing.

2 seniors gone and Mike Moore never had the football thrown to him much, anyway. His senior year, Mike Moore only started 5 of the 13 games and had 249 yards. Nice season, but we have better wide receivers, maybe 3 better.

We are very gifted at Tight End. Mike Bobo better do a great job of having his two Freshmen Quarterbacks funnel the damn football to the TE in two Tight End sets. Orson Charles, Aron White and Arthur Lynch are the 3 best Tight Ends on any 1 Roster in America.

I guess this is where we talk about Quarterbacks.

Aaron Murray, we were told did not practice.

Zach Mettenberger did.

I still don’t like signing 2 QB the same year. Maybe it was good we did this time.

Excuse me, if these guys are not our Starter, we are in big trouble trying to save Mike Bobo from further embarrassment amid constant boos from every fan at Sanford Stadium.

Shaun Chapas

Fred Munzenmaier

2 Best Fullbacks in the nation on 1 team and both NFL capable, and what do we do ?

With no Running Back :

Shaun Chapas we let run for 45 yards and throw him 50 yards.

Fred Munzenmaier we let run for 36 yards and throw him 21 yards.

Mike Bobo this is your last freaking year to get this right with both. God Almighty is all I can say about this sorry Offense.

Adding :

Da’Rick Rogers at Wide Receiver is a big boost, after somehow we couldn’t figure out with our brain trust at Wide Receivers’ Coaching how to get Marlon Brown on the field last year. I was very disappointed about that last year, even getting him into a game only 8 of the 13 games, and throwing him a grand total of 2 passes for a grand total of 7 yards. Damn it, this coaching staff has sucked. We give you a player like that, and you get him on the field for 2 throws all season long. Damn it.

What happens to all the Offensive Linemen we hand this Offensive Coaching Staff ? They are all the best in the country and then they come here and are never heard from, ever again.

Running Backs, we haven’t had one since Knowshon Moreno got to play here 2 years and then left because we REDSHIRTED HIM. Crap.

Ken Malcome from Decatur we better not wait until three-quarters of the 5th game to determine Mike Bobo and Coach Richt have to RIP his damn REDSHIRT OFF, like the Running Backs’ Brain Trust did last year, the season already in a tank and lost, when they in desperation turned to Washaun Ealey who they either were saving for this season, or thought that Caleb King and Richard Samuel just had to be better than what they had shown the previous year for UGA – which was NOT a damn thing. Ken Malcome has good speed and good size, but he isn’t particularly determined to be much more than about the 25th best running back in this year’s recruiting class.

For a Woebegone Offense of Coach Richt and now also of Mike Bobo, every year, this is particularly disturbing that Rodney Garner could not get us another really great Tailback. I will root on Washaun Ealey and Ken Malcome and hope that Carlton Thomas can get in there with Branden Smith and move the ball, but damn it, our Offense sucks and it is because of the LACK OF PRODUCTION at running backs, mostly because all we do is fling the ball down the field unless it is 3rd down in which case, of course, you obviously always run the damn football.

God Almighty.

Did I mention we have AJ Green. That’s all we’ve friging got.

OFFENSIVE COACHING STAFF, kept. Everyone of the underachieving out of position, NO NFL COACHING EXPERIENCE, lousy Offensive Coaches, kept. Jeez Louise, what do they have to do to LOSE THEIR JOBS ?

OL, what a group of under-performers frankly the entire 9-year history of Coach Richt at

17-19 vs Final AP Poll Top 25 teams plus 8 more losses to UNRANKED teams.

There are a lot of Georgia Bulldogs in coaching. We have a fine Major at UGA that really gives them a huge headstart going out in the coaching ranks. Many, like Travis Jones, got their start as Graduate Assistant with UGA.

How many of them are there ?

Travis Jones is out of Irwinton, Georgia. He was recruited in the 1990 UGA Bulldogs’ Recruiting Class. He was a 6′ 3″ 220 lbs. linebacker out of Wilkinson County.

Travis Jones came in with Garrison Hearst in that class with Mitch Davis, and Andre Hastings. Back in those few years there, after Vince Dooley retired, we really didn’t have that many great players – not unlike last year’s defense.

It just wasn’t UGA football, when you can name the really good recruits in an entire recruiting class on 1 hand. Can’t win like that. We were over-matched in the Secondary.

Willie Martinez in charge of the Secondary, frankly, I am surprised we got what we did this season. I guess it was because we lost the entire secondary and they must have known Willie would not be teaching them.

Not that he taught any of the secondary he was primarily the coach of, a bloody damn thing.

Travis Jones is a Coach Nick Saban guy. He recruited very well at LSU and he was taken in the group to Miami Dolphins in Nick Saban’s failure there. Travis has his football camps in Macon now every year and is widely respected. If you look at the beginning of this run here at UGA of 13 years of 8 plus wins and until last year ranked in the Final AP Poll Top 25 every year starting 1997, Travis Jones was on that Top 10 UGA team staff in 1997, Mike Bobo’s senior year that was stellar.

Frankly, I am less worried about the coaches Todd Grantham hires as I am firing every offensive coach on the previous “coaching staff,” as it is obvious to me already that we have a far better Defense and Special Teams for 2010-2011 Season than we have Offense.

Our Offense is in dire straights.

Defense is in great hands with the coach and now with the recruits. Did anyone notice that the vols’ recruiting class fell down worse than UGA’s now ?

DDT you POS, all I have said since DJ Shockley graduated is that we TURN THE FOOTBALL OVER.

I have not said anything else.

Matthew Stafford was horrid.

Joe Cox almost as bad as Matthew Stafford.

And, for all the 23 fumbles last season, we actually only recovered 2 opponent fumbles.

Add that to the interceptions by Matthew Stafford 2006, 2007 and 2008, and then Joe Cox in 2009…

And, well there you have it.

Matthew Stafford had 20 fumbles at UGA and ended up with the same number of TD passes as he had interceptions and fumbles combined in his UGA career.

Joe Cox had 4 fumbles last season and added for good measure to our interceptions.

He AND Logan Gray.

THE PROBLEM is NOT the fumbles and interceptions, it is the COACHING that cannot teach ANY player how to VALUE THE FOOTBALL.

I think UGA’s offensive probelmes this past year were as followed:

1. Trinton Sturtivant was injured….which let to another year of OL musical chairs.

2. Ealey and King were not factors at the first of the season (King hamstring, Ealey stil learning the playbook I guess?)

3. I think Bobo is limited to what he can do…..I believe Richt gives him a play sheet and says call the plays bases on this…I could be wrong here

The main thing I would like to see is a QB that respects the ball and does not throw as many interceptions……….Cox tried to get too “cute” sometimes and thought he could get away with some of his throws…………The Tennessee game when he tried to throw in out of bounds….The Kentucky game when he threw it right to one of their D-Linemen.

Our running game needs a lot of work.

Our OL is not heard from once we sign them.

Our Fullbacks never get the ball.

Our Tight Ends are 3-deep. Our wide receivers are also excellent, but if you don’t have a play that gets the balls into their hands to open up the running game, and you forget every other player on the roster, it doesn’t matter who called the plays.

They don’t work.

Bulldawg: How much does TJ Stripling weigh? And if we’re going to a 3-4, there’s no freakin’ way he sees the field next year. Stripling is a lightweight for a 4-3 DE right now. You need much more size at DE in a 3-4 set.

A couple of facts for the bashers of Bobo (and Cox):

Georgia led the SEC in scoring (vs. SEC opponents). They tied with Arkansas averaging 29.2 points per SEC game.

And Bobo, if you get past the interceptions, had one of the best seasons of any QB in the SEC this year against SEC opponents. This is how Cox ranked this year AGAINST SEC opponents:

Yards: 3rd
TDs: 1st
Completion %: 3rd
Yards per attempt: 1st

Again, it was Cox’s decision making that at times killed us. Cox had a much better year than most fans want to admit.

Little hint for you, Mr. Degree-meister. It’s about scoring points as an offensive coordinator, brother. Having to replace the #1 pick in the draft and one of the best RBs in college football the past several years in Moreno, we led the SEC in scoring in SEC games. The problem was discipline with the turnovers and penalties. And defense.

The defense finally has someone that will know how to gameplan AND adjust mid-game. We need to get to work on eliminating penalties and drastically cutting down on turnovers.

The fact UGA’s defense looked much better in the bowl game that in typically looked under Martinez supports the argument that Willie Martinez was completely in over his head and not qualified to lead the defense. Willie Martinez’s stint at UGA also supports the cliche “never mix business with pleasure.” I’m sure turnovers will be a problem for the first half of next season, but the to ratio will certainly improve. I also got completely aggravated with how Willie refused to adjust his schemes or defensive play calling. During the UT game last year I kept screaming “Why aren’t we blitzing a cornerback or outside lb???!!!” It didn’t take Bud Foster long to figure out how to stop a simple rollout.

Im not believing that Smart turned down the job because of the conditioning program. He could have changed that. Nonetheless, we have Grantham and I do expect more from him next year and I think we will get it. So what we only have 6 returning starters on defense. The depth will have to STEP IT UP! I dont think we will win every game and dont expect too, but I do believe we will win two more games. I am an ‘89 grad who back in the day spent my time in Army ROTC uniform before the home games. I was on the field holding the American flag proudly with Bulldog ROTC leading the color guard during the National Anthem. It was an awesome feeling being out their. I too am a lifelong Dawg fan. Grantham was the D-Line coach meaning he can’t go to the linebackers and or the D-Backs and get in their you know what. Honestly the Cowboy’s line was great the whole game. Held AP to 2.4 yds a carry and sacked Farve 3 times.

Grantham does not coach the DB’s you moron. If the Cowboys DB coach would have taught them to turn their head and look for the ball it may have been a different story. Also, if you watched the game you will see that Brett was not standing in the pocket all day to throw. He had the ball out by a two count almost all day. There is not enough time to get the QB when you get rid of it that quick. But the Cowboys D Line was in his face all day and Favre made some exceptional throws. The two long td’s to Rice Favre (once again on a two count) threw the ball to a spot before he got hit and Rice made the adjustment and great catches.

I am a lifelong Tech fan, proud grad, and a very talented engineer that is rich beyond any of your imaginations I am uniquely capable of seeing the big picture where others can’t. There is no significance whatsoever to the loss to UGA and Iowa. It means nothing that our overpowering offense has scored 10 points in 2 bowl games. What GT fans have to focus on is the monumental achievement of finishing #13 in the nation. #13 guys. Do you realize how big that is. More enlightening is the fact that after losing 2 out of our last 3 games we STILL finished #13. A lessor team would have dropped to at least #20, which in itself proves that GT is a giant in the minds of those that rank football teams.

So you get a guy in Grantham who was fired on January 11, 2008 after the 2007 season with the Brown’s defense ranking 25th against the pass, 27th against the run, and 30th in total-yards-against among 32 teams.

He comes into Dallas and the yards per game given up are higher than when he arrives….. If Dallas were not 3rd in OFFENSIVE RUSHING in the NFL, the Defense would be in the bottom quarter of the NFL maybe close to last where it was when he got fired from his last job.

UGA pays him $750k making him the 3rd highest paid DC in the country – WHY? because they could not afford to have a 4th person turn them down.

Tech gets a better DC for less than half the price and it ain’t my opinion, 49 out of 50 states agree the GT made the better hire than UGA.

We could not afford to Redshirt Washaun Ealey last season. We needed him against Oklahoma State; that’s game 1.

We could not afford to Redshirt Knowshon Moreno, but we did; and, as a result we got to see the best running back we’ve had in over 25 years, 2 years.

Marlon Brown. We threw Marlon Brown 2 passes for a grand total of 7 yards last season. Excuse me.

We didn’t even offer Rennie Curran a Scholarship.

I have said for some time that TJ Striping would benefit from a year bulking up; that’s obvious. What isn’t obvious to you sitting there making excuses for how great we are at evaluating talent, is that we cannot afford to sit down a player of his ability. We are not that good, that we can do without him. As a matter of fact, I’ve also mentioned that he might be moved to linebacker. Todd Grantham is not going to redshirt TJ Stripling.

Mike Bobo, you want BRAG about :

Number 80 Passing Offense.

Number 75 Total Offense.

Now, which 2 games did you want to say he was GREAT in, when he played 13 games and LOST 5 of them ?

We had 3 TURNOVERS against Oklahoma State. They had none.
We had 3 TURNOVERS against the vols. They had one.
We had 4 TURNOVERS against the crocodiles. They had none.
We had 4 TURNOVERS against Kentucky. They had none.
Why did we LOSE all these and won last 2 games ? TURNOVERS.

Number 118 in Turnovers.

Number 107 in Penalties.

Hell, every time we lined up we either we called for a Penalty, or Turned the damn ball, over.

We are Number 51 in Scoring Offense. And, you come running in here to tell EVERYONE at the games who boo Mike Bobo’s play calls, and trust me it is EVERYONE, that my grandmother could call better play calls.

We are NOT that good.

17-19 vs Final AP Poll Top 25, plus 8 losses to unranked teams Richt Era.

Matthew Stafford ended the previous 3 years under Mike Bobo with :

Stafford 18 Fumbles 33 Interceptions to 51 Touchdowns Passes.

We are NOT that great.

Truth be told, this recruiting class isn’t all that great.

And, you insist that you are correct and that I am incorrect that Todd Grantham said that he ranks the football players, and gets the best play makers on the field and that you think that although EVERY RECRUITING SERVICE has TJ Stripling as 1 of the best football players in the state and at his position in the nation, that he has sit down because he is NOT a Defensive Nose Guard.

Excuse me.

I was the 1 in here daily since Spring who said that Washaun Ealey has to play game 1.

I did not see you echoing my statement on him. Who in the hell did you look at and evaluate would be so damn great as our Running Back ?

Caleb King ?

Richard Samuel ?

Carlton Thomas ?

Come on, fess up Mr. Know it ALL.

2007 Total Offense Number 74. That’s with Stafford & Moreno.

2007 Passing Offense Number 83. That’s with Stafford & Moreno.

Willie Martinez was Number 14 Total Defense & 18 Scoring Defense 2007.

The Offense sucks under Mike Bobo.

2008 we were Turnover Margin Number 73 in the nation.

73.

2008 was Stafford and Moreno. Number 73 Turnover Margin.

This Offense sucks.

Number 80 Passing Offense 2009.

Number 75 Total Offense 2009.

Number 118 Turnovers 2009.

2008 Penalty Yards Number 115 in 112 Penalties.

2007 Penalty Yards Number 84 in 91 Penalties.

2009 Penalty Yards Number 107 in 105 Penalties.

We cannot even line-up and run a play call.

THIS “coaching staff” of Coach Richt Era has NO DISCIPLINE.

NONE.

Not off the field, and NOT ON IT. 121 ARRESTS/SUSPENSIONS in 9 years.

God Almighty.

We are NOT that great.

Sorry.

On 3rd down, we are Number 61 in the nation 2009 making it, 61.

On 3rd down, we were Number 38 in nation 2008 with Stafford & Moreno.

I’m sorry TommyP, we are not great.

2008 in Red Zone Offense we were Number 53 with Stafford & Moreno.

Matthew Stafford had 18 fumbles & 33 Interceptions to only 51 TD Passes in his career.

Now, what 1 stat and which 2 games did you want to compare UGA to what other 11 teams, not 118 disregarding EVERYTHING so that you can make your point that you are trying to make to ALL of us that Mike Bobo is GREAT ?

TommyP, you sit there and take 1 stat and try to make your point. Try.

TommyP, you sit there and take 2 games and try to make your point. Try.

TommyP, we LOST 5 games this season. Then, WE ALL read your post and stats on how great our Offense was in 2 games on 1 stat line and damn son, I almost FORGOT we LOST 5 DAMN FOOTBALL GAMES.

Kentucky, a 7-6 UNRANKED TEAM.

Tennessee, a 7-6 UNRANKED TEAM.

Wasn’t it SEC Games you JUST TOLD US ALL TO JUST LOOK AT SEC GAMES ?

Excuse me.

You have no idea what you are talking about.

Let me get this straight TommyP, sir – Guru of Football. Not. We can’t line up and run a play without a penalty, when we do, we either fumble it or throw an interception, end up Number 80 Passing Offense, Number 51 Scoring Offense, and Number 70 Total Offense and you come running in here telling ALL of US that YOU KNOW we are GREAT ON OFFENSE. BEST in The SEC. Never mind, we are the Number 9 team in The SEC of 12 with ONLY Vandie Mississippi State and the vols WORST FOOTBALL TEAMS than UGA this season just ended. Oh, yeah, we’ve got the best Offense in The SEC. That’s why we are the Number 70 Offense of 119. There are 35 Bowls, 70 teams, and we are Number 70 Offense, and you come running in here to tell ALL of US that we “REALLY WERE THE NUMBER 1 BEST OFFENSE IN THE WHOLE DAMN SEC” with 5 LOSSES and UNRANKED for the 1st time in 13 years starting 1997.

TommyP, I will BE HERE to talk about TJ Stripling.

Let’s see who is RIGHT bout TJ Stripling and Todd Grantham ranking his players (not a great recruiting class, sorry), and getting his play-makers on the field.

Bring it BACK in HERE TommyP, and daily for the next 3 years I will tell you so about TJ Stripling, while you SIT THERE AND ROOT AGAINST TJ STRIPLING, TommyP – you POS.

Todd Grantham has ALREADY SAID he ranks the players and then gets his play-makers on the field. TJ Stripling will be on the field sir. Our recruiting class is not that good. We cannot afford to redshirt TJ Stripling to beef him up so you can play him at Nose Guard. TJ Stripling is a play-maker not a Nose Guard.

TommyP, I will Be HERE for you about these statements about TJ Stripling. The Next 4 years when you post in here, I will say “TommyP, is that you ? How is TJ Stripling doing, son?”

There’s a lot of ignorance on this blog. Geez…

And Bobo, if you get past the interceptions, had one of the best seasons of any QB in the SEC this year against SEC opponents. This is how Cox ranked this year AGAINST SEC opponents:

TDs: 1st
Yards per attempt: 1st

Again, it was Cox’s decision making that at times killed us. Cox had a much better year than most fans want to admit.

People, just because Bulldawg broke down just about every player on the roster and in our signing class does not mean he knows what he’s talking about. Sounds like that retard “Ghostzilla” on rivals. Everyone is going to be an All-American.

Bulldawg: How much does TJ Stripling weigh? And if we’re going to a 3-4, there’s no freakin’ way he sees the field next year. Stripling is a lightweight for a 4-3 DE right now. You need much more size at DE in a 3-4 set.

You sit there trying to make excuses for Mike Bobo as Offensive Coordinator, TommyP P for POS. Then, you call MIKE BOBO OUR QUARTERBACK FOR 2009-2010.

Well Bill I got to say that this is Richt’s last stand.

If he can’t make this work then he needs to go. If He can’t put a better product on the field then he needs to go. If he and Bobo can’t develop a QB better than they did with Joe Cox( isn’t this the guy who coached 2 Heisman Trophy winning QB’s??), then he needs to go. If he can’t evaluate talent better then he has and put his best players on the field then he needs to go.

Ya’ll got to understand, this Grantham hire is more than just a coaching change, this is a shift in Richt’s coaching philosophy! And that’s so hard to change! And I got to say that Bobo still being our OC bothers me. Some of his play calling in games actually makes me cringe! As in ” wow are you really THAT stupid to call THAT play in THAT situation!”. If Richt were to take over the play calling duties again while allowing Grantham to run the defense, I would feel better about the situation. But keeping Bobo around sucks and shows that Richt is still stuck in his old loser ” let’s be loyal to my under-performing coaches” mentality. *Sigh*

Regardless, the Dawgs are talented enough( and as always I feel our overall team talent is WAY overrated by our fan base) to finish 8-4. 7-5 or worse is completely unacceptable! In fact if this program finishes 7-5 and embarrasses itself in losses like it did last year, then fire Mark Richt. I’m sick of this crap! Run the program like a competent person or get the hell out. I’m sick and tired of being embarrassed to watch my team play on Saturdays

Response : Matthew Stafford’s NFL statistics are a more accurate source on the ability of Matthew Stafford than a legend in his own mind armchair qb like you.

1 YEAR NFL FUMBLES : 4

1 YEAR NFL INTERCEPTIONS : 20

1 YEAR NFL TOUCHDOWN PASSES : 13

1 YEAR NFL QB RATING : 61

1 YEAR NFL SACKS : 24

No different whatsoever, than what he did here. Our Offense sucks, and has since the very day DJ Shockley graduated with Honors. Matthew Stafford had 18 FUMBLES at UGA, 33 INTERCEPTIONS at UGA = combined 51, and threw a grand total of 51 TD Passes.

What Matthew Stafford has done in the NFL, is EXACTLY PRECISELY what I said he would do in the NFL. We never taught Matthew Stafford to value the football, and he hasn’t learned how in the NFL either.

Has he ?

Now, what do you think he has proved in the NFL ?

That I am WRONG ?

With Grantham, who will be the top D coordinator in the SEC, the Dawgs will rule the SEC east, and easily shut down florida, tennessee and tech. Tech may have trouble getting 13 points next season in Athens. The old geezer that Tech hired will not stop the Georgia O. Tech loses 5 games in 2010–mark it down.

Yes. Great spot on comments. I knew I heard everyone boo at Sanford Stadium. Boo the play calls.

Boo Mike Bobo’s play calls.

2008 when we had Knowshon Moreno, we ran the football to Knowshon against Alabama, Florida, and Georgia tek an average of 14 carries per game.

Why did we LOSE all 3 games ?

2007 when we had Knowshon Moreno, we ran the football to Knowshon against South Carolina and Tennessee an average of 13 carries per game.

Why did we LOSE those games too ?

2009 against Georgia tek, after we had LOST 5 GAMES and had beat NO Final AP Poll Top 25 team all season long low and behold, we run the football 44 times against Number 13 Georgia tek and threw the football only 14 times, and we WIN.

Isn’t it amazing.

In 9 years of The Coach Richt Era, we have beat 3 Final AP Poll Top 10 teams, and only 1 of those by David Greene. He never repeated it after his freshman season hobnailed boot win.

17-19 vs Final AP Poll Top 25 teams plus 8 Losses UNRANKED teams

Since Mike Bobo took over as Offensive Coordinator, we have beat ZERO Final AP Poll Top 10 teams.

LOST 2009 to Oklahoma State, UNRANKED Final AP Top 25.

LOST 2009 to LSU # 17, otherwise they aren’t ranked, LSU beat no one..

LOST 2009 to vols UNRANKED 7-6 team otherwise not winning record.

LOST 2009 to Florida, 2-7 vs. Florida who owns Coach Richt.

LOST 2009 to Kentucky UNRANKED 7-6 team otherwise not winning record.

LOST 2008 to Georgia tek # 22, otherwise they aren’t ranked.

LOST 2008 to Alabama, who has better coach too.

LOST 2008 to Florida, 2-7 vs. Florida who owns Coach Richt.

LOST 2007 to South Carolina UNRANKED 6-6 not even in bowl game.

LOST 2007 to vols, who therefore Won SEC East thanks to blowout.

Final AP Poll Top 25 teams beat with Mike Bobo Offensive Coordinator:

2009-2010 we beat only GA tek Number 13 and that is a great win for us.

2008-2009 we beat really no one # 24 Michigan St no business being ranked.

2007-2008 we beat # 19 Hawaii oh that’s great, # 13 Florida, # 15 Auburn.

Mike Bobo has EXACTLY no win over a Final AP Poll Top 10 team.

Mike Bobo has 2 wins over Final AP Poll Number 13 teams.

Mike Bobo has 1 win over Final AP Poll Number 15 team.

Mike Bobo has 2 wins over Final AP Poll 19 and 24 teams.

Everyone above Number 13 in the Final AP Poll Top 25 has beat Mike Bobo.

How can you finish any higher than Number 14 ?

The wins over Hawaii and Michigan State are hardly good wins.

Mike Bobo is 5-6 vs Final AP Poll Top 25 teams, as the Offensive Coordinator. Overall, Coach Richt is now 17-19 vs Final AP Poll Top 25 teams in The Coach Richt Era.

Mike Bobo has Lost to 4 UNRANKED teams in the Final AP Poll Top 25. Overall, Coach Richt now has Lost to 8 UNRANKED teams in the Final AP Poll Top 25.

If Mike Bobo was to be the answer to our Offense, the record is clear; Bobo has NOT been the answer as Offensive Coordinator.

NOT GOOD Mike Bobo as Offensive Coordinator, are we ?

Since Mike Bobo took over as Offensive Coordinator, we have beat ZERO Final AP Poll Top 10 teams, are 5-6 vs Final AP Poll Top 25 teams, and have another 4 Losses to UNRANKED teams in the Final AP Poll Top 25 – the real teams we played that season.

LOSING RECORD

You are right Go DOGS. And, isn’t it amazing there are those who argue that in this blog right here today that we are great with Mike Bobo OC.

Who cares what Georgia tek does next season ?

They played 6 games against teams NOT EVEN IN A BOWL GAME and there are 35 bowls, top 70 teams.

How in the living hell can Georgia tek play 6 games against teams NOT EVEN IN A BOWL GAME ?

South Carolina beat Climpsum Farmers then UGA beat Georgia tek, and then THOSE 2 hapless ACC teams played each other for the ACC CHUMPionship Game.

The ACC is a joke.

And, anyway, it has been 56 years since 1955 that Georgia tek won a MAJOR BOWL GAME.

UGA has been to 8 MAJOR BOWL GAMES since Georgia tek last even went to one.

UGA has Won 2 of the 3 MAJOR BOWL BCS Games Coach Richt has been to. But, of course, that was BEFORE Mike Bobo became our answer on Offense, as our Offensive Coordinator getting boos from everyone at Sanford Stadium calling running plays on 3rd and 10 – giving up.

When 1 team loses 5 games while only playing 3 non-bowl teams and the other team plays in a horrible lousy conference without a Top Ranked Team who NEVER has a top-ranked team and plays 6 games against teams NOT EVEN IN A BOWL GAME with 70 teams in a bowl game and loses 3 games, has not won a bowl game in 5 Consecutive Years and not won a MAJOR BOWL in 56 years, it doesn’t matter one bit what they did in the NOT READY FOR PRIME TIME, ACC.

I just don’t care. 30-24 for the 8th time in 9 years of Coach Richt Era. And, our Academic Progress Rate APR is much higher for our football team than their APR for their football team.

CBS SPORTS Dennis Dodd has UGA UNRANKED.

Why do you provide this preseason poll URL Link ?

Dennis Dodd is not a recognized Poll.

He has Texas at Number 11 for God’s sake.

And, Georgia tek at Number 10. For what ?

Dennis Dodd has proved to be one of the VERY WORST predictors of anything to do with college football.

The other polls I have seen all have UGA in the Top 25.

That is all that matters at this point. That and getting Aaron Murry to practice.

And, getting out best play-makers on the field, like TJ Stripling.

And, getting Mike Bobo OUT OF HERE.

It’s hard for a guy like Dennis Dodd to get too excited about UGA’s Offense, while he totally overlooks our 2 top-kickers and our Excellent Defense for 2010.

We’re a little thin at running back.

We don’t have good credentials with Mike Bobo as Offensive Coordinator having beat no top 10 Final AP Poll team the entire time he has been our OC while he has LOST 4 games to unranked teams and is 5-6 against the Final AP Poll Top 25.

We play 2 of CBS SPORTS Dennis Dodd Top 10 teams and we play Arkansas whom he also has highly ranked, and I figure we win 2 of those 3.

10-3. It could be 9-4 with this Offense. I doubt seriously we go 8-5 again losing to 2 UNRANKED TEAMS both 7-6 the vols and Kentucky.

After all Coach Richt only loses to 1 UNRANKED TEAM in the Final AP Poll Top 25 every year with 8 in 9 years.

19-20 vs Final AP Poll Top 25 teams in 10 years plus 9 losses UNRANKED teams, that is my prediction for this 10-3 or 9-4 season. Then, everyone can come back in here and tell me how great we are again this time next year. And, how we are going to beat Alabama (Have to agree Bama Fan, that was funny.) DISNEYDAWGS. We are NOT who you say we are, we have not been, and we will NOT be. Not with this offense.

chazzo

Clearly it will take an aggressive D to win in the SEC. I can’t help but think also that it will take a 3-4 D. To beat Saban, who inevitable you will have to beat, your offense had better stand up to the 3-4. It will help if the guys go against a 3-4 in practice all year. While it might seem far fetched to assume that Saban’s D scheme weighed into the decision, just look at all the firing and hiring and moving going on. Coaches with a connection to Saban or who coached directly under him were at a premium. Everyone knows he’s the guy to beat.

Other teams in the league, particularly the west, are coming on. But, if you win the east, you will most likely face Saban in Atlanta.
