It was the safe decision, but was it the smart one?

Kirby Smart

Kirby Smart

Having spent most of my day off today (I’m now working Tuesday-Saturday) away from the computer, I checked back in to find that the rumor one of my brothers had called me about earlier today is true: Kirby Smart isn’t coming home.

It’s disappointing for Bulldogs fans, of course. Smart had been the sentimental favorite for the defensive coordinator job dating back to, well, actually long before Willie Martinez got fired.

But it’s not really all that surprising. When you consider to the move from Tuscaloosa to Athens, what was really in it for Smart? More money? Doubtful. If Alabama hasn’t already matched Georgia’s offer, it likely will.

A chance to make a name for himself away from the shadow of Nick Saban? Well, yes, that was the biggest selling point Mark Richt had going for him.

That cuts both ways, though. Smart wants to be a head coach one of these days. By going out on his own at Georgia, he might have been able to build a strong case for himself. But there was an element of risk in that scenario that probably made Smart gunshy. What if the Georgia job hadn’t worked out as well as what he already has at Bama? Where would that leave him?

Staying with the Crimson Tide, where most people assume Saban is the force behind the defense, probably won’t allow Smart to develop a reputation on his own the way running the defense at Georgia would have. But the safer, more conservative approach for Smart is to continue to ride on Saban’s coattails.

Only time will tell if Smart played the odds correctly or blew his big chance.

How do you not want to return to your alma mater? I had a lot of respect for you Kirby until now. UGA was gonna double your pay and give you an opportunity to put a stamp on your career and set you up to be a head coach, possibly at UGA. I hope we can meet you in the SEC championship game and shove it down your throat!!!

Probably was best move for him. Saban isn’t going to retire as Alabama’s HC and when he leaves, Smart would be next in line. If he leaves UA, it will be for a HC job. Why go as DC and then not have success? That kills your chance at a HC job later on.

I hate that Kirby isn’t coming to Athens, but he’s a smart gut and he knows that in all likelyhood, Saban won’t be there 5 years from now. And that will create his opportunity to get a head coaching gig.

I have nothing constructive to add. After all, Saban’s the defensive genius. We simply don’t know how good Smart is, really. That’s not a dig. Saban’s defense at LSU was pretty good without him. I wish Kirby the best and hope we find an up and coming defensive coach who’s ready for the chance at a DC…

We just cannot start to panic as a fanbase… I have faith that Richt will get the guy that we are meant to have and he will succeed here. I am not sure if it will be. Grantham or not, but I do think that we need to offer Manny Diaz a job as LBs coach, offer Tresey from USF a job coaching DBs, and then look at bringing in a guy to groom Diaz a little more than being DC at Middle Tennessee has… I would really like us to make a run at Wilcox, from Boise State. I think his unit plays fast and smart… I am not ready to say that Grantham is the man for the job, but I will support whomever the hire is at UGA… We have won 90 games the past 9 years, 2 SECOND titles, and have gone to 3 BCS games. We may not be thought of like Florida, Alabama or Texas right now, but we are still one of the 10-15 best programs in the nation and a great place to live.

I wish Smart well. It was a tough decision. There are still good prospects out there and I have no doubt Richt will secure a good Defensive Coordinator for the Dawgs. There are some on here who seem to think it was a life or death decision. The wailing and gnashing of teeth is unseemly. Tebow was right. It is just a game. Even though people feel it’s Saban’s defense, KS still won the Broyles Award and was already mentioned for Texas Tech and USF. I don’t know if he would have even made it two years before finding his head coaching position somewhere. Again, why do we need a movie star, every time? How about an up and comer? Wise up UGa close-minded fans, UGa is not the do-all/be-all school that you think it is. There are many similar football-greater-than-god schools. UGa is coming across as a school for “football heads”, thus constraining its academic potential. Smart athletes do not want to be branded with this perception, and once more athletes wise up and start making better grades, they will gravitate toward schools with good academic credentials, because they will want to be viewed as being smart, and not just a dumb jock. It’s already happening in some sports. Athletes who do not have a future in professional athletics will take a scholarshsip to Duke, UVa, UNC, etc., over the “dumb jock schools”. (Those schools whose followers’ ego are quantitatively comparable to the number of seats in their stadiums.)

The entire nation respects Smart. The entire nation knows he’s a great DC. He just didn’t care to take a step back to UGA. Don’t hate on Alabama because it is a better program than thuggish GA. Hate your program, AD, and current coach for letting you slip into mediocrity. If you had a good coach and AD, a DC wouldn’t be the crux of your search. Wake up. This doesn’t make us look bad at all…we’re the only school in the country that had a chance at Smart, because he played at UGA – I seriously can’t see him even considering any other school after one BCS championship and the likelyhood of a good run at one next season. The National Championship game was Thursday, he thought about the offer over the weekend, and now we know. This is the earliest we could have known in any event. It just so happens that our top target made it to the Nat’l Championship game, and so we’re finding out later than we otherwise would have. I’m sure we are in negotiations with other candidates as we speak.

Nick Saban does not coach the defense, he coaches the team. Nick has said many times that he is Kirby’s Graduate Assistant and lets him run his own defense. I’ve watch them practice a few times and Saban basically throw passes to the Secondary while Kirby coaches the overall defense. Kirby Smart knows that with another NC ring and more All-Americans on defense his stock will go up each year. Kirby isn’t dumb, why would he go to another team and try to build a defense when he has one already built. No Head Coach in the SEC is a graduate of the school they are coaching at now. That “My school, I went to” is highly overated.

Spot on, Alpharetta Dawg. To me, it was inexcusable to string us along this long. Recruiting is in its crucial stage now. Chavis was never given an offer nor was Bud Foster. They were diversions to keep pressure off of Smart before the NC, because somebody at UGA was given reason to expect that Kirby was going to take the job. Nick Saban would not have “gone for the jugular” with his septic tank remark if he had not thought Kirby was coming to UGA.. Mark Richt is far and above a better man than Nick Saban will ever hope to be. Whoever takes over UGA’s DC job will have complete control over the defense and can make a big name for themselves. Kirby Smart lost out, not from staying at Bama, but from the way he handled this whole situation. And by the way, Bama has been beaten by UGA under Saban, and Bama almost got beaten by Auburn, TN, and others this year. Nick Saban is not infallible and the tide does change.

BamaCLT…Fourth best in the East. I know you don’t actually believe that. I will give you guys props on being National Champions this year (I was actually pulling for you guys) and I agree that AL is back and will be the best team in the West (and one of the best in the conference and nation) as long as Saban is there. But to say that we are fourth best in the East is comical and you lose all credibility on this blog with statements like that. The only team you can put ahead of us in reality is FL (as much as that pains me). But they will not be as dominant as they have been after losing Meyer (he’s done), Mullen, Strong and not to mention Tebow, Spikes, Dunlap & Pouncey. Yes they are still recruiting like mad but they still have to be coached up. Look at all of our four and five star players on D and see what Willie did with them (not much). I am still not buying what Kiffin is selling in Knoxville and they will be lucky to win seven/eight games next year with what they have coming back. That leaves SC, Ky, Vandy and you cannot with a straight face say they are better programs than ours. Enjoy the fact that AL is doing so well and I am truly happy they are but don’t be suprised to see us in Atlanta sooner than later. And as you have pointed out in an earlier post you were a D1 football recruit/prospect and therefore that must make you an authority on the subject. Well, so was I a few years before you (based on your comment of Coach Goff being in your living room) so I guess that makes me one as well. I wish Coach Smart the best. As I mentioned in a earlier post I will never begrudge a man for doing what he thinks is best for him and his family but for him to “play” his alma mater the way he did was not cool.

This Hurts

January 11th, 2010
8:30 pm

This hurts as I thought we had good indications Smart was coming here.

In talking with some folks on the inside at Alabama, they said that Saban is tough to work for. He basically sits down with every coach’s wife and tells them that they will have to run their household and raise their kids because their husband(s) are going to be committed at all hours to Alabama.

That was where I thought we had him in that Richt is easy (maybe too easy) on his coaches.

The other train of thought though was that why would Smart come and help UGA be better if he has aspirations to come back home with a promotion some day. He could let UGA continue to sink into mediocrity until the swell of discontent ushered Richt out the door. Smart would be at the top of the list for Head Coach.

And let us not kid ourselves, if Tech doesn’t decide to throw the ball 4x at the end of that game, we would have lost to the nerds … would have had no bowl and Richt would really be on the hot seat.

Oh well, hopefully this doesn’t help recruiting as much as some of the experts are saying it will.

Lest we forget just last year they got blasted by Utah by two touchdowns in the Sugar Bowl. We’ll see.

“I hope Kirby Smart drops dead.”

That’s wrong. You’re going to hell.

It’s pretty sad to read alot of the comments on here, especially the ones posted fromthis loser mentioned above. Especially, since his monicker makes him out to be a Dawgs fan. There are many posters on these blogs that have made Kirby Smart out to be a traitor and a lowlife human being because he made, what he believes in his mind, at this time, to be the best move for his family and his future aspirations in coaching at any level. Give the man a break. I’m sure it was a very hard decision to make.

The part that really chaps my a.. is that you people that are posting this crap are probably Tech fans and a few UF and Bama fans but quite a few so called Dawg fans. You fair weather fans and people that don’t really follow or know what is going on inside the UGA football program are the ones that make UGA and it’s football program look like imbeciles to anyone else in the whole country that might drop in and read your illiterate nonsense.

Go away, no one needs your drunken insight into the state of affairs within this program. True college footbal fans across this country know the proud history of GA football.

After reading the diatribes for a while now, I thought I would make some observations:
#1. Penalties/discipline : Total lack of discipline on and off the field lead to our massive amount of penalties.
#2. QB : nuff said
#3. Lack of defense: that is the problem we are trying to fix….at least get the fire back in their bellies and wrap those arms around the folks they are trying to tackle. Hopefully we won’t be sticking them defending a short field with Cox gone, but with a freshman QB it could happen some.
I think if we fix those three problems, then we will be in good shape, no matter WHO the DC is.
Kirby did what he thought he should do and I wish him luck. CMR went after someone that he thought would help the program and got played. Well I wish him the best of luck in continuing the search for our next DC.
Maybe the AF guy…the discipline would certainly go a long ways.

Richt will get a very good DC and we will be in the hunt in the east again next year. What is Alabama’s record over the last ten years compared to Georgia? I don’t have to look it up to know who has a better record. Post on your Bama sights, so we don’t have to read your look at me comments that discuss your six figure pay. No one cares what you make.

Dawgs do not take a backseat to Alabama. In 2003 Bama was 4 wins and 9 losses – they got to play an extra game for playing in Hawaii that season. Both 2006 and 2007 they were 6 and 6. That’s small time football at it’s best.

Yeah, all of the UGA detractors are right about UGA being a second tier program in college football, second tier if you call being a historic, academic institution nestled in a highly desirable town, in a beautiful, part of the country, with a coach that possesses the 4th ranked active, win perentage in college football.

An institution that ranks #3 on the Forbes list of most valuable college teams:

University of Georgia, Bulldogs
Value: $90 million
Profit: $43.5 million
Conference: SEC
Head Coach: Mark Richt

Georgia’s $60.3 million in football revenue last season was the highest in the Southeastern Conference.
Lower tier University all of the way.

I don’t blame you for posting your mindless, drivel. The truth is, you’re fools.

UGA need to look in the mirror and take an honest assessment of where they are as a program. You have pursued 3 straight coaches and asked them to make a lateral move at best but in reality, they were all taking a step down. Richt is on the hot seat and no respectable coach is gonna roll the dice and go there. Make an offer to a young hungry coach and move on. Richt reeks of desperation. Why not give Garner a chance. He has been loyal for years and won’t wait around forever.

It’s Richt and Bobo (along with a fresh-behind-the-ears DC ) coaching all over again. It’s a new untested starting QB. The stud juniors are gone to the NFL.

You’re competing in a conference that will have the defending National Champs (Bama), and #1 rated recruiting class (Florida).

If the Georgia D/C job carried career advancement, and the pull of home was too strong to resist, then why did the Mutt coach have to resort to the time-honored technique of buying this guy, in effect, by offering to double his salary?

Anybody who takes the Mutt job (and ours too for that matter) may not have as much talent to work with next year compared to this year—so its certainly no guarantee of improved results either way.

I don’t know what Suntan’s backup plan, but that’s four down and counting. The entire mindset from the get-go has been to go after a big established name and boy has it not worked.

I wish him all the best and I hope the overtures got him a big pay increase, and I’m looking forward to testing his defensive prowess in the SEC Championship next year. Richt needs his own Erk or Mickey. Don’t know that he’ll find one in this day and age, but if there’s one out there CMR will find him. Yesterday I thought Coach Smart would take the DC job at UGA, and it would not be a decision based on money, as Alabama would meet the compensation package and probably sweeten it a little. When I read these blogs, you UGA folks thought he was the saviour. The best DC in the country (which he was this year) cannot fix all your problems. He really did not reject UGA, he made a business decision. His heart will always be at UGA, and most likely he will be the HC somewhere around this time next year.

I pull for UGA, and I know many of your alumni who would be ashame of the comments that have been posted tonight. There are a couple of Alabama and GT folks who need to clean up their act too.

Hate Coach Saban all you want, he is a winner and he knows winning come from talented players, discipline and hardwork. Coach Richt use to be a winner, I have no idea what changed, but I do know the talent is still there.

Our fanbase is delusional. We ARE 4th in the east…that’s where we wound up. Behind UF, Behind UT, Behind UK. Also might want take a long look at Tuberville’s quotes where he has said repeatedly, Willie wasn’t the problem. Our team lacks discipline and drive, something other successful programs in the SEC have. Saban may be a lot of things, but he is a disciplinarian and he runs it his way. You don’t see stunts to try and motivate his team. You don’t see passivity, you see aggression. Hiring the DC from Air Force won’t bring discipline, the players there are a lot more disciplined for reasons that don’t involve their coaching staff. Discipline starts at the top. We need to be honest with ourselves about what the state of our program is. We may not have players robbing convenience store patrons, using dead girls credit cards, running cocaine rings or popping off a few rounds from an AK-47 into the air, but the problems we have do stem from the same undisciplined attitude. Driving on suspended licenses, driving the wrong way, driving on sidewalks… all lack of discipline and laziness. We may have talent, but we have the wrong type of talent. I feel bad writing this, because in general we have good, smart, non thug players, but they lack discipline just the same as the thugs doing that stuff at other schools. We need to scrap the Richt era and start over… call Kirby and offer him the head coaching job. We should have lost faith today in Richt, not Kirby.

As muchas I liked the idea of Smart coming to UGA, after thinking about the way that freshman QB fron UT played against his D in the second half of the NC game this may be best for UGA. This also could have played into his decision. Think about what happens if he blows it at UGA without Saban hes done as a DC and HC. staying with Alabama hes able to look good with Sabans D.

Maybe Georgia fans got caught up in an emotional ride, but now that we’re all thinking RATIONALLY, we realize what an UNTESTED, UNPROVEN, RESPONSIBILITY DODGING BACK RIDIN’ SHOTGUN PAL SABAN’S SHADOW REALLY IS.

If that sounds harsh, sorry. Saban’s Shadow, aka Chicken Little, isn’t ready to fly out of his warm little nest yet so he’s gonna follow grandpa Saban around like a lapdog movin’ every 1-3 years in search of the Holy Grail?

Give me a break. Richt’s #5 winningest active coach, Saban ain’t even in the top 20 Bro.

Richt as OC got FSU to the Natl Champ 5 times. 5 times. Richt has Natl Champ years at Georgia in 2002 & 2007. Richt has won 90 SEC games in 9 seasons.

Saban’s Shadow, aka Chicken Little, just missed his lucky break and chose to RIDE SHOTGUN to Grandpa Saban instead of SHOWING US WHAT HE CAN DO.

Wow, I know that Bama is an incredibly strong and storied program with an amazing history but it amazes me how quickly Bama fans forget how awful they were between that last 1992 championship and the arrival of Saban. There were a few good seasons (that didn’t get wins reversed for violations) in there but man, 2003 – 9 losses, 2004 – 6 losses, 2006 – 7 losses, 2007 – 6 losses. UGA was actually 3rd in the east this year (not 4th) in our worst season since Richt arrived in 2001 with 5 losses and hasn’t had a season as bad as any of those peaches from Bama. Shoot, Bama was lucky this decade before Saban to finish 3rd or 4th in the west.

I thought elephants were supposed to be known for their memory, guess not. Bama may be back on top now but there certainly aren’t any guarantees that will last forever. Saban is just as capable of the kind of mediocre season UGA had this year as any other coach and he’ll probably ditch Bama for whoever offers him more money in a few years anyway. Yes, Bama crushed UGA last year but that doesn’t change the fact UGA has beat them 2 out of the last 3 either. I have a ton of respect for Bama but man, some of you fans need to remember what you felt like in those horrible seasons I mentioned and maybe be just a tad more humble.

Here we have Richt running around, struggling to find a DC and 2 defensive
coaches that he fired, by contrast you have Florida that has already replaced 4 coaches(that weren’t fired) and is hard at work on the recruiting trail. They have already
locked up the #1 recruiting class in the country and are now pursuing only 4 & 5 star recruits. This class has already been called, the best class in the history of the NCAA.
Now you understand the pain in Jacksonville each year.

Additionally, unlike Air Force, who did well also, Navy is an independent and therefore has to play a number of different teams, conferences and schemes. And, Navy boys don’t have as much time as other “student-athletes” so if he can get them ready with the limited amount of time he gets to work with them think of what he could do with UGA athletes. Finally, look at the coaches throughout history that have been successful at one of the military academy’s and how successful many have been after they move on. Was it the smart one???? Let’s see, stay at Bama (a team that just won the NC and will probably dominate the SEC and college football for the next 5 to 10 years. Then get a great head coaching job somewhere else). OR, Leave and go to UGA (a team that will be mediocre at best over the next five years, with a head coach that will not be there in 2 years. Then, end up having to become an assistant (downgrade) due to the fact that talent stops coming into the program). I wonder which one is the SMART move. What an idiot!! Oh yeah, almost forgot. UGA is a black hole right now. No GOOD coach in their right mind would touch it.

Hmmmm: Our recruiting base going away? We have about 10 million people living in Georgia. We have more people living in one town that Alabama practically has in the whole state. When Alabama has won at least 8 games for 13 straight years (UGA tops in the Div.1) then you come talk to me. Where were you three or four years ago when Bama was 6-6? I have no problem with Smart turning down the job , I do have a problem with him not standing up and talking , you have to admit its pretty lame to let Saban talk for you , this actually might hurt his chance at landing a big time head job if he is seen as only a puppet, and I hope it doesn’t because he is still a dawg and always will be one but i am wondering what this does for his image with potential schools . It probably won’t matter unless his defense has a bad year he will get the blame if the defense has another good year Saban will get the credit. In the championship game the announcers were always praising nick sabans defense , and I think thats the perception especially now.

i think Alabama is Saban’s last stop. he has tasted the NFL and knows he does not like it. he has every resource available to him in Tuscaloosa. he will have his statue outside the stadium.

however, i agree with you that his presence at Bama gives an unsettling feeling. i have always thought of Saban as the LSU coach. it has been so weird for me to see him on that Alabama sideline. it’s like he does not quite fit but in reality he does.

CMR’s offense put FSU in the National title 5 times?

How much of that was Andrew’s defense? How many FSU fans weren’t happy with CMR’s red zone play calling? Did CMR take responsibity for the last loss in a National Title game? Just as Bobo has for ‘07 and UT?

Smart made the correct call, CMR has to fix problems in all 3 phases of the game but it is blamed on the defense.

What is CMR’s record since taking on the CEO roll and handing the keys to Bobo and CWM? It is night and day from the CMR and BVG teams. If things don’t change Smart has an outside chance at being UGA HC in a few years as DC he has ZERO chance.

I am not a fan of either team, but it was (no pun intended) a smart move for KS to stay in Alabama. Georgia will get a good DC. I understand the dislike for KS, due to his ties to the program. But think about it from this aspect. KS just went 14-0 and won a NC. They have their starting QB, great WR and Heisman trophy RB coming back on offense and lots of starters returning on defense. UGA has to break in a BRAND NEW QB. Who do you think has more job stability CNS (who just went 14-0 and won a NC) or CMR (who just went 8-5 and lost to Kentucky at home and played a bowl game in Shrevport, LA.) What happens if UGA struggles again this year on offense and KS is not able to turn the defense around in one year (it usually takes 2 yrs. at minimum)to impliment your system and turn around an offense or defense. If UGA struggles again next year and the UGA fan base starts rumblings, CMR may be out of a job. Do you think that Damon Evans will turn the team over to KS (especially if his defense does not play lights out)? The answer is no? What happens then, KS is shown the door just like CMR. A new coach will more than likely want to bring in his own staff. KS made the smart move for today and for his future. If UGA and Alabama had the roles reversed (UGA just winning the NC and Bama going 8-5)you all would think that KS would be crazy for wanting to leave, even though it was his alma mater. Just a thought from someone who is not wearing crimson and white or red and black.

Look we really wanted Kirby but he has a better gig right now. We need to go get someone who is qualified and is fired up to be our DC. We would not want somebody who has doubts. As well as Kirby is on the path to a HC job and we would be perpetually wondering about his leaving. If we get a guy that is motivated to be here then maybe we can get our defense to pay to their potential. As far his not speaking to the matter maybe it was difficult for him. alot yall are the same idiots who trash 18 year old kids for signing with another school. Who wants somebody who doesn’t want to be here. I trust OUR coach and yall seem to forget he just had to fire a friend. Alot of you wouldn’t have the nards to do that. So he does care about us taking the next step to elite status. Congrats to Bama( i did not pull for them i could care less about another SEC team getting a championship). You people who are gnashing teeth and griping about the 5th winningest coach since 2000. He’ll find a good one and we need to be patient and allow the process to work out. Also, don’t throw mud on the guys name now because he is not going to UGA. KS IMHO is a very good DC and is getting better by the day due to working with CNS. Just put your nose back to the grind stone and make a smart, wise choice. They are numerous other coaches who can run UGA’s defense. Evans and CMR need to do some homework and I am sure they will find one. Pete Carroll was not USC’s first choice when they hired him. I am sure they are countless examples of coaches and coordinators who ended up being great for thier programs and were their teams 3rd, 4th or 5th option.

You fair-weatherd fans are unbelievable. When times are good, you guys talk more smack than anyone. However, when times are bad and things arent going your way, you cant accept it. Smart made the right choice. You may not agree with it but that’s college football. We all know Saban will cut out of Bama real soon. It’s in his blood to do that. Smart will be the new HC at Bama in about 2 or 3 years. Why would he screw that up just to “come home” and coach a team that lacked discipline on and off the field.

And before you spew more crap, if you don’t like Ole Miss much, why was it reported a few weeks ago that Richt talked to Tyrone Nix, the DC at Ole Miss?

Calm down people…and whatever you do don’t let the sports-scribes from ‘those lyin’ Atlanta newspapers’ (if you’re as old as I am, you know where that came from) get you all riled up. There were only two reasons why Kirby would have considered coming ‘Home to Momma’. The first was money – reportedly double what he was making – but he was assured early-on that Brother Saban and the Tide would ‘do what it took’…the other was what I said earlier – Momma’s calling. If we had been truly hurting…if we didn’t have one of the best coaches, and the finest man, and one of the top, overall, programs in the Conference, and, for that matter, the Country, maybe he woulda’ come for that reason alone. But he didn’t and who can blame him? Why disrupt your family and your comfort level when you don’t have to?

So Mark Richt will have to continue to look – and disrupt his time and efforts during a critical recruiting period – for ‘his guy’. He’ll get him – of course we’ll have to put up with the Bradley’s, et. al., of this town dissin’ on the Dawgs, but it’ll all come out in the wash – and we’ll actually field a football team come next September.

By the way Kirby, Momma only calls once. Hope you continue to enjoy life with ‘Brother’ and we’ll see you along the sidelines.

The decision by KS is based on this very simple calculation. He stays at Bama, NS leaves at the end of 010 and then, KS is offered the HC job there. Scenario II is that Richt bails within two or three years ( hopefully, after two really great years out of the three ) and again KS will be offered the HC job at his alma mater. Win win scenario.

If you have ever been offered a great job, while you had a great job, it is called the “rocking chair”. NO, things do not last forever, but right now for KS he is in the so called “rocking chair” and by being there, he could DOUBLE HIS PLEASURE at either UGA or Bama or another SEC school. It is a smart calculation by a still very young ( experience too ) coach.

This is the logical explanation and Richt is just part of it and it is the way things are. Richt was not the issue ………….. MULTI job options in the immediate KS future were the reasons.

Plenty of great firebrand D coaches are around, we must find one soon. Big deal. Besides we won w.o. CMW did we not win vs the 5th BEST offense in the nation? HAHAHAHAHA

Archie was good. Had he not broken his hand his senior year, he might have won it. we will never know.

Everything happens for a reason. You think Richt may have realized that Smart is just a puppet for Saban. Richt is smart (no pun intended). He knows Saban runs that Defense with an iron fist and Smart is just managing it. You will find a guy (Bumpas, Grantham, the guy from Air Force). he may even have an NFL guy in mind.

Coachdawg, i agree. There was a time when Tennessee was the “dream destination” just like Florida and Alabama are now. Even then, Georgia found talent and competed with everyone (David Greene, Garrison Hearst, Hines Ward) every Saturday.

Im not saying that to suck up.

A unstable program now and in future

January 12th, 2010
11:15 am

True bama grads know that they have been basically an unstable program for years and years and years. Yes, they are NCs and I am happy for them. Yes, likely in 2010 they will also be NCs.

Facts are facts; NSaban is the coach there and he jumps about every 4 or so years for the NFL, Pop Warner or wherever he wants. I still say his name will come up for the USC job by Thursday. If not, then it will be next year at Michigan or some large school. Easy to predict this is.
Where will that leave jilted Alabam? Here is where …
Bama has had in the last 13-15 years about 5 or 6 coaches. Stallings, Francione, that guy that got charged with sexual discrimination, the guy that was hired, then got into a tacky situation with some gal in a cheap hotel room ( all Alabama rooms are sleazy and cheap ) and left town PDQ for the Pacific NW and Shula and now Nick The Trick Saban.

THIS is a sign of a very, very unstable program. MOST TRUE TIDE FANS ( grads do ) know this. Francione left Bama wihout even saying good bye to his boys. Gone, slammed the door, got the heck outta the state. He dropped them like a bad habit. See? Why??? Because the state is Alabama is why. Most ot their wiives despise that state is another reason. I rest my case.

I am not shocked at all by Kirby’s decision to stay at Alabama considering all the pros & cons. What I am confused with is the timing of this decision. Here’s what I mean, why didn’t Richt offer Smart a contract offer a month ago? There was no “legal reason” why Mark couldn’t have made this decision a month ago before the NC game/outcome. Mark put himself in a “no-win” position by waiting until after the NC game, and now UGA is still without a DC.

I know it sounds easy on this end, but the more time passes the more idiotic this search becomes.

If, perhaps, he did it to screw over his Alma Mater, however, then he is either a chicken sh** or a piece of sh**, and neither one of them is what I want to lead out dedfense. Good riddance, and now let’s go get someone, big name or not, that is dying and excited to be our d-coordinator. I just want someone who really wants to be here, and that also teaches fundamentals and an aggressive/attacking style of defense. We will be fine, and Coach Richt, thanks for being one of the few out there with a sense of integrity and dignity, as I don’t want you trolling with the likes of scumbags like the money-grubbing, arrogant and self-seving a-holes that are so prevalent in the SEC. In the UGA game vs Ole Miss, Manning was knocked out before the half or at any rate, had to leave the F of play. He re entered the game from the visitor’s dressing rom, put his helmet back on to a standing ovation. He was to my left, as I was in the mid level of the student section, around the 20 yd line, near their entrance. We knew that he was a legend.

He and Sullivan were and both were UGA rivals. Sullivan and Archie did compete in a minor bowl later on, I recall. Saw Auburn in 69 or 70 when UGA beat Sullivan his Jr year and Ricky Lake was a real horse that day. Great memory and that was in Auburn. Fabulous party that night, we had.

Jake Scott got beat deep vs Archie Manning but also had a great punt return and a pic. Imagine ………those two …… Manning and Jake Scott would be in the NFL Hall of Fame and Scott was MVP for both the DC Skins and the Dolphins and to this day is usually considered around Super Bowl time, as one of the “greatest safeties in the NFL”.

Great UGA memories which is what 98% of the so called fans on this site will never experience because they stay at hom on Mom’s PC and do nothing all day long. UGA did not win the SEC in either year that I describe here BUT the memories of fun, partying and other things are wonderfull, if you know what I mean. Still married to my UGA gal friend too. On Monday, the Bulldog Nation was like a kid in a candy shop. They thought, much like myself, Richt found his guy – it was a done deal. Then Nick Saban steps up to the table and Kirby is heading west on I-20. Look guys, Richt offered him everything a coach could ask for: Total control, the authority to hire his own defensive staff and lots of cash. He didn’t take it. Would it have been a good move to come to Athens from a national champion? In my opinion, no? Here’s my reason: Smart is a guy that obviously needs a few more years of guidence from his obvious mentor. He’s not fully ready to get out from under Saban’s thumb or should I say his keen oversight of the Bama defense. Smart obviously feels he needs that nurturing – after all the guy is only 34 years old. Sure, it was a lateral move in terms of title, but it wasn’t in terms of total responsibility. On the flipside, maybe Richt didn’t really even need a guy that’s afraid to venture out on his own. Perhaps Richt should stop trying to hit a grand slam with this decision. Maybe Richt should go the D-IAA level and find a man that knows defense like the back of his hand. Georgia doesn’t need a top-name DC or NFL guy to run its defense, it needs a guy who can get the most out of the players on that side of the ball, teach the fundamentals of tackling and be agressive when it’s time to be aggressive. I think all the Bulldog Nation wants is the defense it had back in the early 2000s. Just a thought from this guy who is like the rest – on the outside looking in … My only other question: Can somebody tell me the last coach off a Saban staff to become a major college football coach? Go Dawgs!!!!

If anyone wa wondering how much of the defense was Kirby or Nick, the answer just came. By Nick saying we will pay you to stay, he said himslef that Kirby Smart is the force behind the defense of Alabama. Which says a lot about Smart, and the fact that they will continue to build additional good defenses for Alabama. That is the news that is not good for GA fans.

Theres Always Next Year...

Why would he leave Saban and Alabama, with his star on the rise, for a lateral move to Richt and Georgia, whose star is rapidly descending?

Alabama is loaded with talent, will start next year no.1, they will pay more and, most importantly, he will continue to GROW under Saban instead of helping to SAVE Richt.

But don’t worry Joja fans, timing is everything…

He’ll still be available next year when you guys call him about your HEAD coaching position.

By the way Paul Johnson, no GT will not have the talent in 2010 that they had in 2009, that is a fact. for the simple reason of the 3 Juniors that just left. GA on the other hand will be as good, if not better in ‘10 than in ‘09. And as some GT fan said yesterday, “the best team that GT had in 20 years could not beat the worst team GA had in 13 years” says a lot. And when considering the fact that our defense will be better next year, because of the new DC – think about that. The Army DC would be a good hire, if he is available and wants to move out and up.

Im a 2001 graduate of Ole Miss. I remember a lot of games. I was a manager on the 1997 team that beat Miss. State 15-14 on that gutsy two-point conversion call by Tommy Tuberville. I was on the sidelines when we beat LSU 36-21 in Baton Rouge that year. I was there when we held LSU four times at the 2-yardline the next year to win 37-31 in OT, the last play being a QB sneak by Herb Tyler.

I remember Ole Miss beating Oklahoma 27-25 in the last game played in the 20th century. Les Binkley kicked the game winning FG at 12:15 am Jan. 1, 2000.

Lets face the facts. We have become a second tier program in the SEC east along with Vandy and KY. We lose out on top rate recruits every year from our own state. We have lost the status and prestige that we use to have, and that is why we are in this situation. I dont see it getting any better in the years to come. Get use to the phase, wait until next year.

Kirby Smart has followed Nick Saban around for what, 3 jobs now? He impresses me as someone who is not yet quite sure of his abilities and not comfortable in his own skin. He chose to continue to suck at the Nick Saban tit rather than get out on his own and make his own mark. I hope the Kool-Aid taste good and I wish him the best.

I know Richt and Damen are taking heat with the PR backlash, but I think what they are doing is commendable and Dawg fans should be happy they are going for the top and working their way down. They can’t MAKE Foster, Chavis or Smart take the job. What they can do, and did, was put the best offer they can possibly put on the table in front of them and make them make a tough decision. They all stayed with their current schools, but we are expending every possible resource to get the best guy. Sometimes the best moves are the ones that don’t work out, and I am optimistic that this will be the same. Richt and Damen will get the guy who WANTS to come here which will mean he will work even harder and put together the best staff he can from the college ranks and NFL.

Bulldog fans are sounding as crazy as Clemson fans about this and they need to back off and let Richt/Damen do their do diligence and get the RIGHT guy. Obviously, Kirby was not that guy or he would have come.

Be patient….don’t sound like Clemson fans….and we’ll ok soon.

Good riddance. ONe of the main problems on def. was lack of basic tackling skills. Smart was a fast, intelligent player at Georgia but one of the least physical players to ever play for UGA. Didn’t use his shoulder pads in 4 years so it may be a blessing he isn’t trying to teach our players tackling fundamentals. Saban is the one who is doing that at UA as it is well known that is Saban’s favorite part of his job.

UGA has had some of the best talent in the country over the last several years. When you have two first round picks including the first overall you should at least win your conference and make a run a the national championship. All this chatter about DC is just shaddowing the fact that Richt is not getting the job done. UGA leads the nation in penaltys every year, they have a severe lack of leadership and would rather show boat and look good than work hard and win. Maybe Kirby Smart saw what UGA fans keep over looking, Mark Richt is not getting the job done. The talent has been there but the finished product has not transfered to the field.

I don’t begrudge Kirby Smart for staying at Bama. He obviously likes the situation with Saban, despite the fact that the TV announcers constantly refer to the Tide defense as Saban’s. The argument that coaches don’t make lateral moves is specious, as it often happens. One thing Smart assured himself of is that he will never be coaching for UGA. I attended and watched nearly every game Kirby Smart played in at UGA. He was scared to hit or tackle and could not cover. He led the SEC in interceptions – big deal – because when he didn’t intercept he did nothing at all.

However, there has been a lot of thought that bad players make good coaches and I thought, well maybe Kirvy could coach. We still don’t know because he is still Saban’s understudy. I think he looks like a good apprentice though.

Evidently Kirby played at UGA but didn’t bleed red and black and he changes jobs quite often.

I hope Coach Richt makes a better decision next time.

KS new he would have a job next year with Bama, not such a sure thing if he jumped to UGA. Look at Lance Thompson, ex linbacker coach left Bama to go to Tenn last year and now he will be unemployed next week. Maybe he could be CMR DC. He is available and depserate, like UGA.

Bama runs this conference, what a joke. You guys were awful for a long time before Saban saved your butts. You lost 9 games in ‘03 – 9 GAMES! UGA hasn’t had a season that bad in ages. Your once honored program was a total joke for like 15 years before you righted the ship to get back on top.

You guys talk about 1 5 loss season for UGA as the death and decline of the UGA program. It’s one season with 5 losses, not near as bad as some of the dog crap seasons Bama had between 1992 and 2008. I just hope it doesn’t take UGA 15 years to fix some of these issues like it did Bama.

Was UGA not predicted to be Number 1 a few years ago or at least Top Dawg in the SEC. But Bama beat you like a wet poodle. Since then Bama has won the SEC, had a Hiesman Winner, 2 Top 5 Recruiting classess, oh and might I mention the current National Cahmpions.
