It was the safe decision, but was it the smart one?

Kirby Smart

Kirby Smart

Having spent most of my day off today (I’m now working Tuesday-Saturday) away from the computer, I checked back in to find that the rumor one of my brothers had called me about earlier today is true: Kirby Smart isn’t coming home.

It’s disappointing for Bulldogs fans, of course. Smart had been the sentimental favorite for the defensive coordinator job dating back to, well, actually long before Willie Martinez got fired.

But it’s not really all that surprising. When you consider to the move from Tuscaloosa to Athens, what was really in it for Smart? More money? Doubtful. If Alabama hasn’t already matched Georgia’s offer, it likely will.

A chance to make a name for himself away from the shadow of Nick Saban? Well, yes, that was the biggest selling point Mark Richt had going for him.

That cuts both ways, though. Smart wants to be a head coach one of these days. By going out on his own at Georgia, he might have been able to build a strong case for himself. But there was an element of risk in that scenario that probably made Smart gunshy. What if the Georgia job hadn’t worked out as well as what he already has at Bama? Where would that leave him?

Staying with the Crimson Tide, where most people assume Saban is the force behind the defense, probably won’t allow Smart to develop a reputation on his own the way running the defense at Georgia would have. But the safer, more conservative approach for Smart is to continue to ride on Saban’s coattails.

Only time will tell if Smart played the odds correctly or blew his big chance.

Definitely the conservative move for Smart. Do we really want another conservative DC? Smart hasn’t proven anything on his own and I don’t know that he was worth 700K. I wish him all the best and I hope the overtures got him a big pay increase, and I’m looking forward to testing his defensive prowess in the SEC Championship next year. Richt needs his own Erk or Mickey. Don’t know that he’ll find one in this day and age, but if there’s one out there CMR will find him. Maybe our best defensive showing was with Rodney Garner and the Graduate Assistants. Not that worried about the flavor of the moment, good luck Kirby but here’s to the Dawgs making you regret your decision. Gooooo Dawgs, Sic’em Woof Woof Woof!

think about it. maybe the same deal muschamp got. hc in waiting, 1,000,000 a year. afterall just like all the other dc, why go to the trouble moving when you can get same thing for staying.i moved one time and it was and it wasn’t fun but i didn’t get paid for it. i wouldn’t blame richt if he left the game. the fans, adams the ad the alumni are all on his back. i wouldn’t want to put up with all this bull oh and all the sports writers qn top of that. big time coachs will start walking away from the game that they once knew and loved for a smaller school that’s got players that don’t think they are GOD’S gift to football. and that’s all i got to say about that forrest.

Yesterday I thought Coach Smart would take the DC job at UGA, and it would not be a decision based on money, as Alabama would meet the compensation package and probably sweeten it a little. When I read these blogs, you UGA folks thought he was the saviour. The best DC in the country (which he was this year) cannot fix all your problems. He really did not reject UGA, he made a business decision. His heart will always be at UGA, and most likely he will be the HC somewhere around this time next year.

I pull for UGA, and I know many of your alumni who would be ashame of the comments that have been posted tonight. There are a couple of Alabama and GT folks who need to clean up their act too.

Hate Coach Saban all you want, he is a winner and he knows winning come from talented players, discipline and hardwork. Coach Richt use to be a winner, I have no idea what changed, but I do know the talent is still there.

Thuga is SUCH an embarassment for the rest of the SEC. Every other school has a niche for their pride. However, no one, NO ONE, wants to be known to be associated with the Walmart alumni that thuga claims. Your only pride comes from upsetting an ACC team you co sider inferior. UK wiped their shows with you and your fans. Just keep off the front porch and out in the fields. You’re never welcome in the SEC house.

Hell, CMR has gone for the big guns and I admire that! The man will have a top DC soon and we will all forget this soon. The only worry was, were we going to lose recruits? the answer is NO . and with the scholarships we have left to give, The kids out there interested in UGA are in reality interested in the BIG G and CMR.

Our fanbase is delusional. We ARE 4th in the east…that’s where we wound up. Behind UF, Behind UT, Behind UK. Also might want take a long look at Tuberville’s quotes where he has said repeatedly, Willie wasn’t the problem. Our team lacks discipline and drive, something other successful programs in the SEC have. Saban may be a lot of things, but he is a disciplinarian and he runs it his way. You don’t see stunts to try and motivate his team. You don’t see passivity, you see aggression. Hiring the DC from Air Force won’t bring discipline, the players there are a lot more disciplined for reasons that don’t involve their coaching staff. Discipline starts at the top. We need to be honest with ourselves about what the state of our program is. We may not have players robbing convenience store patrons, using dead girls credit cards, running cocaine rings or popping off a few rounds from an AK-47 into the air, but the problems we have do stem from the same undisciplined attitude. Driving on suspended licenses, driving the wrong way, driving on sidewalks… all lack of discipline and laziness. We may have talent, but we have the wrong type of talent. I feel bad writing this, because in general we have good, smart, non thug players, but they lack discipline just the same as the thugs doing that stuff at other schools. We need to scrap the Richt era and start over… call Kirby and offer him the head coaching job. We should have lost faith today in Richt, not Kirby.

As muchas I liked the idea of Smart coming to UGA, after thinking about the way that freshman QB fron UT played against his D in the second half of the NC game this may be best for UGA. This also could have played into his decision. Think about what happens if he blows it at UGA without Saban hes done as a DC and HC. staying with Alabama hes able to look good with Sabans D.

Maybe Georgia fans got caught up in an emotional ride, but now that we’re all thinking RATIONALLY, we realize what an UNTESTED, UNPROVEN, RESPONSIBILITY DODGING BACK RIDIN’ SHOTGUN PAL SABAN’S SHADOW REALLY IS.

If that sounds harsh, sorry. Saban’s Shadow, aka Chicken Little, isn’t ready to fly out of his warm little nest yet so he’s gonna follow grandpa Saban around like a lapdog movin’ every 1-3 years in search of the Holy Grail?

Give me a break. Richt’s #5 winningest active coach, Saban ain’t even in the top 20 Bro.

Richt as OC got FSU to the Natl Champ 5 times. 5 times. Richt has Natl Champ years at Georgia in 2002 & 2007. Richt has won 90 SEC games in 9 seasons.

Saban’s Shadow, aka Chicken Little, just missed his lucky break and chose to RIDE SHOTGUN to Grandpa Saban instead of SHOWING US WHAT HE CAN DO.

Kirby Smart is a shotgun back ridin’ parasite.

That’s the cold hard truth.

Wow, I know that Bama is an incredibly strong and storied program with an amazing history but it amazes me how quickly Bama fans forget how awful they were between that last 1992 championship and the arrival of Saban. There were a few good seasons (that didn’t get wins reversed for violations) in there but man, 2003 – 9 losses, 2004 – 6 losses, 2006 – 7 losses, 2007 – 6 losses. UGA was actually 3rd in the east this year (not 4th) in our worst season since Richt arrived in 2001 with 5 losses and hasn’t had a season as bad as any of those peaches from Bama. Shoot, Bama was lucky this decade before Saban to finish 3rd or 4th in the west.

I thought elephants were supposed to be known for their memory, guess not. Bama may be back on top now but there certainly aren’t any guarantees that will last forever. Saban is just as capable of the kind of mediocre season UGA had this year as any other coach and he’ll probably ditch Bama for whoever offers him more money in a few years anyway. Yes, Bama crushed UGA last year but that doesn’t change the fact UGA has beat them 2 out of the last 3 either. I have a ton of respect for Bama but man, some of you fans need to remember what you felt like in those horrible seasons I mentioned and maybe be just a tad more humble.

Kirby used UGA just like the others. I don’t believe he had any intentions of becoming our DC. I still hear the name of Tim DeRuyter who is currently at Air Force. His aggressive style of defense is more what everyone wants. Time is becoming an issue at this point.

Here we have Richt running around, struggling to find a DC and 2 defensive
coaches that he fired, by contrast you have Florida that has already replaced 4 coaches(that weren’t fired) and is hard at work on the recruiting trail. They have already
locked up the #1 recruiting class in the country and are now pursuing only 4 & 5 star recruits. This class has already been called, the best class in the history of the NCAA.
Now you understand the pain in Jacksonville each year.
You’ll never compete with Florida again until you get rid of Richt, “Mark is just too nice to be a head coach” Bobby Bowden 2000.

Smart move by Smart. Alabama fan here. BUT, let me say. Looking at the situation in Georgia, how many more years are the University of Georgia and the fans gonna give Mark Richt before they say, “Ok, total coaching change.” I believe there is a little bit less of the “hot seat” Syndrome at Alabama right now.

However, I would a lot rather have Georgia win that division than Florida!

What makes Bulldog Nation think coaches at Alabama, LSU, Florida, Virginia Tech or the Dallas Cowboys would want to take a step down to a second tier SEC program. Take Alabama, Florida and LSU out of the SEC and you have no bragging rights. That my friends is what makes the SEC superior to all the rest. Unbelievable to think UGA should be some dream job.

ESPN has lost their objectivity when it comes to Georgia, Kirk Herbstreit lobbied against Georgia in 2007 to get Georgia dropped from 31 ranking to #4. Wrong. Unethical.

Now Craig James, 90% of NY Times Union Bloggers say James should be fired for abusing his power t get Leach fired, yet not 1 ESPN reporter spoke up for Leach.

Biggest credibility hit for college football I’ve ever seen. Never imagined the day when bloggers would go AGAINST ESPN 90% to 10%.

DawgVoiceofReason, the trophy touring Wal Mart was a mandatory concession by the BCS to a sponsor of the BCS trophy (Dr. Pepper). Alabama had nothing to do with the tour of Wal Mart of the trophy. Had Texas won the trophy would have toured Texas Wal Marts.

Additionally, lots of parking, good deals for people trying to save money, and a highly visible venue in your own home town! What’s wrong with Wal Mart? Are you to good to shop there?

I say interview Buddy Green – DC at Navy. Why? Anyone that can be successful at Navy should be considered. Additionally, unlike Air Force, who did well also, Navy is an independent and therefore has to play a number of different teams, conferences and schemes. And, Navy boys don’t have as much time as other “student-athletes” so if he can get them ready with the limited amount of time he gets to work with them think of what he could do with UGA athletes. Finally, look at the coaches throughout history that have been successful at one of the military academy’s and how successful many have been after they move on. Just say’n, talke to Buddy Green DC at Navy.
