It was the safe decision, but was it the smart one?

Kirby Smart

Kirby Smart

Having spent most of my day off today (I’m now working Tuesday-Saturday) away from the computer, I checked back in to find that the rumor one of my brothers had called me about earlier today is true: Kirby Smart isn’t coming home.

It’s disappointing for Bulldogs fans, of course. Smart had been the sentimental favorite for the defensive coordinator job dating back to, well, actually long before Willie Martinez got fired.

But it’s not really all that surprising. When you consider to the move from Tuscaloosa to Athens, what was really in it for Smart? More money? Doubtful. If Alabama hasn’t already matched Georgia’s offer, it likely will.

A chance to make a name for himself away from the shadow of Nick Saban? Well, yes, that was the biggest selling point Mark Richt had going for him.

That cuts both ways, though. Smart wants to be a head coach one of these days. By going out on his own at Georgia, he might have been able to build a strong case for himself. But there was an element of risk in that scenario that probably made Smart gunshy. What if the Georgia job hadn’t worked out as well as what he already has at Bama? Where would that leave him?

Staying with the Crimson Tide, where most people assume Saban is the force behind the defense, probably won’t allow Smart to develop a reputation on his own the way running the defense at Georgia would have. But the safer, more conservative approach for Smart is to continue to ride on Saban’s coattails.

Only time will tell if Smart played the odds correctly or blew his big chance.

YellowJacket – If Coach Richt wanted to Coach at FSU, he would be the coach. He loves it at UGA and we love having him.

It’s easy to see why GT fans come on our blog. They have nothing to celebrate but mediocrity, so they come here to try to stir the pot. I honestly could care less, so keep spouting off your hot air.

No true Alabama fan would come on here to rub it in. They are all on the Alabama blogs celebrating as they should.

oh and censored, we are greatly lucky and appreciative to play Tech every year. Nothing better then beating up on those patsies right before bowl season. It’s a huge confidence booster year in and year out. hahaha. 30-24 dork. Go sit on your pocket protector.

gomdawg: You wont be seeing Alabama in the SEC Championship anytime soon. Georgia wont win the east under the control of Mark Richt. Am I the only one that sees Richt is the problem…
Kirby made the right decision, he wants to gain as much knowledge from Saban until he gets a shot to be the head coach somewhere respectable. Good move in my opinion.

You leave the wife at home, you don’t have them serving koolaid on the sideline. What kind of man is that?

This Hurts

January 11th, 2010

This hurts as I thought we had good indications Smart was coming here.

In talking with some folks on the inside at Alabama, they said that Saban is tough to work for. He basically sits down with every coach’s wife and tells them that they will have to run their household and raise their kids because their husband(s) are going to be committed at all hours to Alabama.

That was where I thought we had him in that Richt is easy (maybe too easy) on his coaches.

The other train of thought though was that why would Smart come and help UGA be better if he has aspirations to come back home with a promotion some day. He could let UGA continue to sink into mediocrity until the swell of discontent ushered Richt out the door. Smart would be at the top of the list for Head Coach.

And let us not kid ourselves, if Tech doesn’t decide to throw the ball 4x at the end of that game, we would have lost to the nerds … would have had no bowl and Richt would really be on the hot seat.

Oh well, hopefully this doesn’t help recruiting as much as some of the experts are saying it will.

Will Alabama be the team to beat next year? I’m not so sure. They’re losing an awful lot of that defense including Mount Cody. Claiming next year’s Championship because of this one is a little premature. What were they two years ago 7-6? The margin is razor thin. Lest we forget just last year they got blasted by Utah by two touchdowns in the Sugar Bowl. We’ll see.

Dawgs2010:

“I hope Kirby Smart drops dead.”

That’s wrong. You’re going to hell.

It’s pretty sad to read alot of the comments on here, especially the ones posted fromthis loser mentioned above. Especially, since his monicker makes him out to be a Dawgs fan. There are many posters on these blogs that have made Kirby Smart out to be a traitor and a lowlife human being because he made, what he believes in his mind, at this time, to be the best move for his family and his future aspirations in coaching at any level. Give the man a break. I’m sure it was a very hard decision to make.

The part that really chaps my a.. is that you people that are posting this crap are probably Tech fans and a few UF and Bama fans but quite a few so called Dawg fans. You fair weather fans and people that don’t really follow or know what is going on inside the UGA football program are the ones that make UGA and it’s football program look like imbeciles to anyone else in the whole country that might drop in and read your illiterate nonsense.

Go away, no one needs your drunken insight into the state of affairs within this program. True college footbal fans across this country know the proud history of GA football.

Good luck Kirby Smart with all of your future endeavors. You are welcome home any time brother by the true UGA family and also by the true fans of the University of Georgia.

Kirby Smart did not seek the job at UGA. He was hounded by Richt for two weeks without expressing any inclination to leave Alabama. Of course Alabama would match any offer Georgia would make, so why would anyone leave a national championship program to go to a chaotic and declining program like that at Georgia.

Some guys have BIG BOY PANTS, step up, and handle responsibility, some guys, like Smart, are back riders, who are parasires, lack confidence in their own skills, and like to lap dog and follow a coach all over the nation. Smart has followed Saban around like a little puppy. Happy to bask in the glow of Saban’s success, afaid of the risk of failure.

Richt exposed Smart for the Saban Shadow he is, glad he turned us down, let’s get a guy with PROVEN ability to STAND ON HIS OWN.

Censored. More graduates than anyone in the SEC other than Vandy? Not so. Try SC, KY, Ole Miss, and Miss St. Oh, almost forgot one. Auburn. Thugs????? I’m so sure Bama has no thugs. Get real, it’s the south, they are everywhere. I do belive Courtney Upshaw, Rashad Johnson, and Jimmy Johns to name a few. So lets not to act like your team is highclass over there. And one more thing. Me, you, and 2 monkeys could have coached Bama’s Defense this year. The talent on that D was head and shoulders above anyone in the country. Smart is not that great, I have never lobbied for him. Those who follow football know that is Sabans “D”. So get off the GEORGIA blog and go to your local Walmart to get your picture with the trophy.

What an absolute joke and a waste of time and effort. CMR and Damon Evans once again have dropped the ball and has enbarrassed the University of Georgia and its fans. Some folks think that this is Kirby Smarts fault leaving CMR holding the bag. This is totally the inept actions by CMR and Damon by not nailing down Kirby BEFORE the national championship game. When are the rest of you blind homers gonna wake up and understand that CMR will NEVER bring us a NC. Everyone in the world 4 years ago could see that Willie M was clueless and so is Bo Bo. We are gettig our brains beat out every year by Florida in recruiting and UGA always struggles against the Vandys, Kentuckys and SC’s of college football and as a fan Im getting pretty irritated. Some of the rest of you fans think everything will be just fine. Well may I ask you how much longer are we UGA fans are going to have to wait to see some results? 30 more damn years ????????? I hope CMR is gone within two years and wish him the best of luck because today is a sad sad day to be a DAWG Fan!
