Dogs may be in for a quarterback battle

In the minds of many fans, Georgia’s quarterback situation for next season is pretty clear-cut: Aaron Murray will be the starter, Zach Mettenberger will be the backup and Logan Gray, the only QB on the team with any game experience, will yield to the inevitable and switch to another position, possibly wide receiver, in order to get more playing time.

Nice and neat.

Aaron Murray (Bob Andres / AJC)

Aaron Murray (Bob Andres / AJC)

But that scenario might be in for some rewrites. First, the coaches indicate that whether Gray moves or not is up to him. You’d think he’d want to go into spring practice in the position he’ll play next fall, but he might decide to give the quarterback job one more try, at least through G-Day. And, who knows, if he’s still at QB come September, Mark Richt might decide to play it “safe” and at least start out the season with Gray.

That would not be a popular decision, but Richt has gone that route before with Joe T. back in Matthew Stafford’s freshman year.

Also, fan expectations might be shaken up in another way. Despite the fact that Murray got off to the faster start last spring and received more of the practice reps this season when Joe Cox took Wednesdays off to rest his arm, not everyone is convinced he’ll be Georgia’s starter. The other night on “The Dawg Report” on CSS, Kelin Johnson and Ray Goff seemed to think Mettenberger is likely to start because Murray fell behind in learning the offense while missing several weeks of practices last fall suffering from triceps tendonitis.

Murray is the more mobile of the two and more of a threat to run, but some observers think he’s a bit short. He’s listed at 6-foot-1, but that might be using the elastic ruler that’s often applied to quarterbacks. Still, he could counter that with his ability to roll out and throw downfield, which we saw in last year’s G-Day game.

Height certainly isn’t a problem for 6-foot-5 Mettenberger, who hails from Oconee County just outside Athens. I saw him play once in high school and he clearly towered over everyone else on the field. I also was impressed with how far he could throw. He has an NFL-caliber arm and reportedly throws a more catchable ball than the early Stafford did, but he came to Georgia needing more development than Floridian Murray, who played among a richer talent pool in high school. Mettenberger’s footwork, in particular, wasn’t very good.

Zach Mettenberger (Bob Andres / AJC)

Zach Mettenberger (Bob Andres / AJC)

“I think it’s going to be a race,” receiver A.J. Green told the Athens Banner-Herald. “Both of them look real good. Zach’s probably got the bigger arm, but Aaron is just prepared like he’s going to be a starter.”

Departing receiver Michael Moore said in the Athens paper that “Mettenberger is a prototype quarterback with a cannon of an arm. He’s like the Ryan Mallett-type kid if he gets everything together as far as mentally knowing the playbook. Aaron Murray is like the nitty-gritty guy with the pinpoint accuracy and has a little bit of mobility.” Not forgetting Gray, Moore adds: “Logan is just a guy that’s been here that has more mobility than all of them and is more of a dual-threat that puts a lot of stress on defenses.”

Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo has said that Murray needs to continue to work on progressing through his reads faster and understanding the offensive concepts, as well as getting used to working under center, since he operated out of the shotgun in high school. Mettenberger, Bobo says, has improved tremendously at not trying to rely just on his arm strength and putting more touch on the ball, but needs to continue to get quicker on his feet. Helping with that is that he’s trimmed down to about 232 pounds from 249 when he arrived at UGA.

Said Bobo in the ABH: “It’s going to be a fun spring.”

And Moore said he “wouldn’t be surprised if they go into the fall not really knowing who it is.”

Frankly, I’m hoping Gray goes ahead and makes the move to receiver or flanker. He has athletic ability but wasn’t at all impressive in his infrequent turns at quarterback this past season. And you’ve got to conclude that if Georgia’s coaches had thought he was capable of making a difference in a disappointing season, they would have played him more.

There no doubt will be rough spots in the Dogs’ quarterback play this fall, especially early on, because of the lack of game experience. But I think there’s a lot of upside in the choices Murray and Mettenberger offer Richt and Bobo. Whoever is the starter will have the advantage of working behind a veteran offensive line that proved adept at protecting the quarterback even when it was underperforming early last season. And in Washaun Ealey and Caleb King, the QB have a couple of backs who improved tremendously this past season and look to get even better.

Plus, of course, Georgia’s quarterback will have the phenomenally talented Green as a target.

Coming off a year when the Dogs were hampered by too many interceptions, Richt has indicated that “respect for the football” may be the deciding factor in who the quarterback is.

Despite what Johnson and Goff say, barring any more problems with the tendonitis I still think Murray is probably more likely to start, mainly because he’s the more mobile of the two and he’s known for his on-field confidence and gung-ho attitude. But down the road, I can easily see Mettenberger, who seems more of a pro prospect than Murray, behind center for the Dogs.

How do you see Georgia’s prospects at quarterback in 2010?

I look for a battle. I think Metz could be an awesome QB with the ability for the deep ball and AJ as a target. But Murray has the guts to will a win as proven in high school. Looks like fun and plenty of blog topics.
Logan should contemplate a move. Now me having said that, he will start and lead us to the SEC East. My words have bit me before.

Aaron Murray will be the guy. Goff doesn’t know what’s going on….he says Murray doesn’t know the playbook as well but all of the players have said all along this year that he seems so well prepared.

I thought that Logan Gray played the best of all the QBs in last year’s G-Day game. Cox could not move the team in last year’s G-Day game and Richt/Bobo did not improve his play much during the regular season. Gray does not look to be getting a good look at the QB position for some reason. Also, look out for the Lassiter QB this summer. Go Dogs!!

Personally, I’d like to see Mett taking the snaps…that’s just me with no rhyme or reason. I think he fits more into Richt and Bobo’s pro-style offense, and like Brandon Smith said about “speed” – you can’t teach height. His arm cannon should help too, and footwork should improve if coached. Murray supposedly has the “it” factor, but I just don’t buy into that until “it” has done what Green did at UT leading up to the hobnailed boot play…either way, I like both guys…just pulling for Mett.

It really is a tough call. Murray seems to be the more well-rounded, likely to win immediately QB. But in Mettenberger, we’d have a marquee quarterback who’s actually a local kid and has a lifelong love for the dogs – something that Stafford didn’t have (nor Moreno, for that matter), and I think it really showed. Mettenberger’s been waiting for this chance his whole life, and watching some of the best times in UGA football from righ down the road as he’s grown up playin. That’s a factor that I think people are far too quick to discard.

AS MUCH AS WE ALL LOVED STAFFORD AND MORENO, THEY WERE TRULY HERE FOR A STEPPING STONE TO BIGGER AND BETTER THINGS. HAD THEY BEEN FROM THE GEORGIA COUNTRYSIDE AND KNEW WHAT SEC FOOTBALL WAS TRULY ABOUT LONG BEFORE THEY SAW GAMETIME, I THINK WE WI THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP 2 SEASONS AGO.

1.)Neither one was ready in 2009.
2.)Gray needs to move to WR
3.)I say play them both, kind of like Robinson and Goff.

5.)Mason needs to redshirt and get stronger

My personal opinion is that Murray will start and Logan will move to Wide Reciever. He can catch the ball we’ve seen. He’s fast. He’d fit in good at WR. Whoever is the QB against Louisiana Monroe on September 4th is who I’m going to support.

I’ve always liked Logan Gray. You can’t ask for a better football attitude. I’m pulling for him to prove that he is our best QB. our last souteastern conference came with DJ shockley at quaterback and Aaron Murray is a similar type Quarterback.Sometime big strong quarterbacks as Mettlenberg and Stafford force the ball too much i saw this as a season ticket and at the games with Stafford.Aaron Murray is more accurate passer and thats what we need at Georgia and his mobility want hurt.HEY UGATAB green might have had hobnailed boot but shockley beat LSU in the conference championship and he is not the tallest bigest guy at quaterback.

At least one should have played this last year. There is no reason Cox should have been out there. it’s true that neither was ready but they were both better options than cox. We could be 10-3 and not 8-5 with a decent QB throwing to Green and Moore.

I dont care if they are local or not….I just want a winner. Stafford had a big arm but couldnt hit the long ball to save his life. At first I loved Stafford’s “big arm” until I saw him miss wide open receiver after receiver. I am no longer sold on the “big arm”. Murray will start….book it. Who cares how tall he is? Stafford was 6 3….two inches is not that much of a difference.

I think Logan Gray has the ability to be a very good SEC QB. If they hadn’t stunted his development by putting him on all of those special teams units, then he may have been ready to play this year. If he puts in the requisite work this off-season, then he is a wild card in the race.

Murray came out of high school as a more polished QB, playing in a spread system, and has what everyone calls “it.” He is a little small, but is very smart and mobile. He is a great leader and I just don’t see anyway he gets beat out next year.

Mettenberger has a rifle, but played in a Wing T offense in high school. Supposedly his footwork was really, really bad, but has improved a lot. I just don’t think he is as ready as Murray is at this point. Plus, once Murray wins the job, I doubt he gives it up.

GW

Hopefully the coaches will recognize which QB is best and not play favorites based on “love of the Dogs” or where a kid is from. That does not mean I’m against Mettenberger. Murray strikes me as on of the many FSU dual threat QBs over the past decade they try to win it on their own and more times than not come up short. Besides Bobo does not have the creativity to use him. Mettenberger has more of a chance of overcoming Bobo’s stale playcalling just by being able to see the entire field.

If Murray does win it I hope Zach transfers it would be a waist for him to play backup all 5 years in Athens.

Yeah LSUnAtlanta, without the horrible celebration penalty that the SEC apologized for and ultimately got that officiating crew suspended after the same crew cost Arkansas the Florida game, UGA wins that game so…. whatever. Anyway, looks like UGA has a very good problem to have. Three great QB’s battling for the starting job. Our defense will be MUCH better too so look out everyone. Still hoping the Air Force guy (can’t remember his name) gets serious consideration. His stats were extremely impressive with lesser talent than what we enjoy here in Athens. My guess as far as the QB situation is exactly what Bill mentioned in the first paragraph. Murray is going to be the man! Maybe with a special teams coach that will concentrate solely on ST, Logan can showcase his mobility returning kicks and as a WR. The future is very bright for UGA!

I’m excited to see what I feel should be a 3 man race, as I am not ready to write-off Logan Gray quite yet. Gray looked great in the G-Day game last spring. I know he had mostly poor results this year, but Bobo did not really put him in situations to succeed or to build confidence. With the exception of the Florida and Tenn Tech games, Gray would come in and run the same read option play that the defense was going to key on given he was in the game. He never really had back-to-back plays or a whole drive to show his skill set. The UF game was bad, but the entire team played bad and we did not put in Gray until late in the game and backed-up in our end-zone. So please don’t read a lot into that for him…I am excited about Murray because I think he has good leadership skills and will take care of the football, but I do see Mettenberger as someone who can be a star if he continues to improve his footwork and keeping his eyes down the field, while moving in the pocket… I really do see this as a bright spot on the team as we move to the future. I think by the end of 2010 UGA will prove to have one of the best QB situations in the nation.

Now lets look at their QBs, Tebow and McCoy, especially McCoy. They are mobile. After looking at film of Murray, he looks a lot like McCoy. Lets not forget the big arm that was under McCoy that transfered to Ole Miss and led the nation in interceptions. Lets also not forget the big arm that was at UGA that did not lead us to a championship. My point is is that in college football right now the mobile quarterbacks are the ones winning, and a mobile quarterback is the last one that led UGA to a championship. Also, its not like McCoy can’t throw. He has a good arm.

Look we need to go with whoever gives us the best chance to win next fall and not get into a quarterback carousel. The coaches need to make a decision by the end of spring practice. Otherwise it could be another tough season!

Bill,

you make an invalid comparison with Joe T., because Stafford was a TRUE freshman at the time whereas Murray is a redshirt freshman. Also, Bobo said as recently as a few weeks ago that Murray was the more polished player at this time, so I don’t think either Ray Goff or Kelin Johnson know what they’re talking about in regards to Murray falling behind because of the injury.

Murray will be the starter.

With the depth of talent on-hand and proven top-notch QB coaching, QB is the least of UGA’s problems. I’ll be much more interested in seeing what the defense will look like. Priority #1, though, is finding a camera-friendly Dawg that can make it through a full season.

you guys are retarded. Every player comes to Georgia as a stepping stone, THAT’S WHAT COLLEGE IS. Saying that Stafford or Moreno didn’t love Georgia is about the most asinine thing a Dawg fan could say. You guys are the ones who said the exact same bullcrap about Joe Cox and listed his “love” of Georgia as the reason why he would be better than Stafford. Joe Tereshinkski III loved the Dawgs too, you know.

Not as if it matters who is the QB for the Pound Puppies next year. They can brag about beating a Texas A&M team starting some 18 freshmen with high hopes going into next season. There are 3 things that can help the Puppies and they are:

1. Meyer stays retired
2. Richt has a miracle performed on his backbone to motivate his teams to play with the heart of “wanting” to be a champion
3. Headlines out of Athens changes from arrests and how big of PIGS their fans are while tailgating (maybe they forget that Athens isn’t the trailer park they are used to)

Richt is SOFT (PERIOD)! His commercial for being Ford Tough makes me laugh because he should be the new Charmin man because he is Charmin SOFT!!! He’ll simply keep going to church and praying for the almighty to deliver on his inability to win big games.

Don’t let you Puppie Pride cloud your judgements. What I have sad is true when you actually put the pride aside and look at the facts. How many of you threw “Tebow Is Gone” party’s???

CMR needs to stop this inheriting jobs stuff move gray to WR. I personally think AR or ZM should have started last year . I will be surprised it you don’t see both playing at the start of the season. Both have things they can improve on and both have there strong points. Which ones develops the “it factor” first will have the upper hand. The DAWGS would be favored to win the SEC if they had a proven QB. That’s why I was wanting somebody to get in there this past year to get some playing time. This can cost us down the road more than it would have this year. Time will tell.

We need to get back to the kind of defense we once had. Just take a look at which teams lead the nation in fewest yds per game on defense and compare those teams to who is in the big bowl games. Did anyone pay attention? Did anyone read this blog?

Mettenberger will have the best shot at starting…Why?

1) Logan Gray is a dual-threat….Mike Bobo calls Mark Richt’s pro-style offense. There is no way it’s going to change to the spread.

2) Aaron Murray is on the short side and not making quick enough reads. At best, he’s going to go into next year as the back-up. More likely is that he will transfer out if he doesn’t win out. He’s no DJ Shockley…

3) Mettenberger is a local kid, has good size, a big arm, and is the prototype QB to run this offense. Under center, he’ll be making the following progression reads: Green, King, Durham, Wooten….how hard is it to get one of them the ball?

Seriously people…

There’s something in the water at UGA that gives receivers butter fingers. Our guys are so talented – I hope they overcome it for once and give our QB’s some super-caliber guys. Green is obviously super-caliber, but other top UGA receivers started out better and got worse as they drank the UGA water – Edwards and Gibson both got worse in my opinion – Massaquoi got better.

I am a fan of the big, prototypical pocket QB. Saying that, I like Metz. I think UGA will employ a ‘Bama like offense. With backs like Ealey and King, just turn around, give it to one of those guys, carry out your fake, and watch them go. It the event that you have to pass, go play action and pick a color: Green, Brown, White or (Rogers, obviously not a color, but worth throwing it to). If that O line holds up, you should be in good shape, offensively (defense is another story). I think what matters more than how good UGA is, is how far down to earth UF is.

I talk to Aaron Murray quite a bit. He has a good head on his shoulders and is ready to lead the Dawg Nation to multiple championships. I for one am quite upset he didn’t get the starting nod this season and a true freshman to get more experience. Look what happened with stafford he left early and wasn’t even redshirted. Watching Aaron in Highschool he is the leader the Dawgs have needed since Shockley left. When he is on the field everybody knows and he is going to get the Job done. He came his senior year after breaking something in his leg early to bring his team to the National Championship. Not to mention that big athlectic guy that wears number 7 at TE was his main target and those two were nasty in highschool! Well who ever they put in there, I just hope they’re able to make good decisions with the football.I’m tired of seeing turnovers and INT’s cost us games! I was really pretty dissapointed in Joe Cox’s inability to make good decisions in the pocket. I mean the guy had 5 YEARS to learn this offense! And he didn’t perform any better than a rookie QB would have. Let me put it this way: I suck at math! If all I did for 5 YEARS was study word problems, by the time the test comes, I’m going to at least know how to do word problems if nothing else! Cox should have been able to run that offense in his sleep! Either Joe Cox didn’t put in the work to get better or the coaching staff doesn’t do a good job of getting their backup QB’s ready to play. The defense will be better next year if the Offense runs the ball more and keeps the other teams offense off the field. We need a short passing game to complement the long pass. Hopefully Bobo will implement a good short passing game with a good running attack. They do not need to sit the three other RB’s on the bench either. It is a shame to waste good running backs.

What a terrible situation for the Bulldogs – Murray, Mett & Mason. Hopefully we will make every effort to play two of these guys a good amount in lesser games next season. Murray should start but they need to get Mett in there as well ( more than one lousy rep a game ). I really hope Logan gets to play if he goes to WR.

LSU isn’t exactly known for excellence at the QB position. That’s been their achilles heel. (As most NFL scouts privately knew, Jamarcus Russell was vastly overrated.) And LSU doesn’t have any strong QBs in the pipeline either.

UGA fans have reasons for excitement with the competition between Gray, Mett., and Murray.

We needed a QB in this class so Hutson Mason is a decent late signee. His stats are impressive but he played in an extremely pass-happy offense–so I wouldn’t take those stats too seriously.

Do I agree with the call in the LSU/Bama game? No I sure don’t…But I have never said it was the reason LSU lost the game, Like I believe you stated that the penalty was the ONLY reason UGA lost to LSU this year.

Maybe UGA and the Mighty Richt should have figured out how to gain more than 45 yards of TOTAL OFFENSE in the 1st half. And if LSU had a HC that could put a decent game plan together, UGA wouldn’t have even been in that football game and even you know it..

UGA perfect storm question

January 7th, 2010
4:12 pm

Hello fellow dawg fans & dawg hatters,

What does everything think it is going to require for Mark Richt and company to have a great run like Alabama and Florida. Where UGA competes for let’s say, atleast 2 national titles in a 4 year span and be in the mix for BCS births for let’s say 3 our of 4 years. Is this realistic for UGA?

Jeff

January 7th, 2010
4:13 pm

Either way we are going to be in good shape. Richt did the right thing by redshirting both of these guys last year. I think both will play at times next year. Gray is not an SEC caliber QB, but he can help our offense in lots of other ways. Either way, a good O line and good running backs can make an average QB great. Not to mention the deepest and most talented WRs in the SEC in 2010. Whomever the QB is, they are going to have every advantage.

Bill Stanfill

LSUnAtlanta, as per NCAA stats, UGA total offense ranked 79th in nation(bad!!), LSU?—112th (SuperBad!!!). And you’re lecturing to me about offense???

And no, I NEVER said the AJ Green call was the reason we lost that game. We COULDA won the game, but in my opinion, the better team (LSU) of that game won. Just like the LSU-AL game, you COULDA won the game had the Peterson call went your way, but CLEARLY, the better team(AL) did win the game.

For all the hype about how much better y’all say you are, you were 9-4, UGA 8-5 and you were one very late TD away from losing 4 straight to UGA

So stick it where the sun don’t shine. You’ll be second fiddle in the West so long as Saban stays in Tuscaloosa and Les tries to figure out what day it is….

Gotta be painful, watching your ex-coach abandon you and take your arch rivals to the NC game!!!

Height is BS. Just ask Drew Brees.

Murray played against MUCH better competition in high school than Mettenberger but either could start. If Gray couldn’t get time this year then he isn’t (shouldn’t be) the guy. We also don’t need to play 3 different QBs for 3 straight years. Go with the young guy that can play for 3 or 4 years. My guess is Murray but I think both could be good and will be needed and will play.

Remind me, wasn’t it Meyer just a few years ago that went 7-5 and lost to Michigan in the bowl game? Also, as good as the Gators have been over the last few years, Florida has NEVER has an undefeated season …something that Georgia has, as well as the winner of the ALA-TX NC game tonight. AU was undefeated in ‘04, and Georgia 13-1 in ‘02, 12-2 in ‘07. The only difference is Florida & LSU have had the luck of others losing in the same year which propelled them to the NC game.

The best move for UGA at QB would be to play the guy who hands off the the RBs better and who has the brain to walk up to the line and get out of a bad play/formation. If Richt elects to go with the “arm” and remains in love with Green at WR, UGA will win 8 games next year. Run the damn ball, play defense and win the Division.

Green can get his touches with a few passes, a few “wildog” plays and a few reverses. Heck, line him up at TB and run the toss sweep. But do not throw the damn ball 30 times a game, 15 passes is plenty.

Mike Bobo said Murray studied the game more than any QB he had coached. Since Murray had a 5.0 HS GPA all that hard work will better prepare him to start. Murray also trains hard, he tied Cox, a 5 yr senior, as strongest QB in the UGA program. The kid benched 350, not bad for an 18 yr old. Anyone with a scholly at a Div 1 school is a better than average football player, so 90% of an athlete’s success at that level will depend on how hard he wants to work. I think Murray earns the job.

I don’t know, but it’ll certainly be interesting to watch. Logan didn’t get enough of a workout in game situations to get much rhythm going, so it’s hard to tell. But I really like how the offense is stacking up with the improved running game, and with a ton of receivers…especially if Da’Rick Rogers keeps his pledge. If they run an option offense, then Gray or Murray have an edge. If they go more pro-style, then Mettenburger may have a shot.

TE is kind of an interesting situation. Both Charles and White are really undersized as prototypical tight ends, but they’re both pretty fast and talented. Bruce Figgins and Arthur Lynch are more typical, but still relatively unproven. Lot of choices, though.

Richt said during the year that Joe Cox at quarterback gave us the best chance to win. If that is true (and I trust Richt’s judgment), then Logan Gray was clearly a worse choice at the position. I don’t see how he can be our quarterback. Richt very publicly stated that Gray could opt to try for another position such as receiver. I have no inside sources but it appears that Murray should be the next quarterback. If the offensive line can jell, if King and Ealey continue to run like they did late in the season and if Green, Wooten, Charles, White, Brown, T. King, etc. continue to do well, it could be a very good year. The question mark aside from quarterback will be the defense.

I’m not sure if the success that Ward had at Florida State was the planning of Richt or Bowden, but if we can take advantage of Murray’s mobility the way FS did with Ward, watch out!

Richt (or Bobo) seem to favor the pocket passer, maybe too much. I’d love to see UGA have a qb that can keep the defense off balance and unable to predict our 35 quick passes to the outside for two yards.

Richt (Bobo) are way to predictable in their play calling.

Both Coach Richt and Coach Bobo have shown favoritism with the QB position over time and they will continue to support the local boy, though he shows no sign of leadership, which quite frankly is missing from this team. They will give Logan a shot, allow Mett to goof around because he has been hanging out at Butts Mehre for years and they will end G-Day undecided. Aaron Murray will then transfer back to one of the Florida schools where he can compete without bias.

Don’t be too quick to give up on Gray because of the way he played in brief appearances this year. Remember how awful DJ Shockley was late in his junior year. Came on the next year and won the SEC title. Don’t judge by cameo appearances.

Gray is not an option. If he couldn’t get on the field to spell Cox I can’t see him as a serious contender. One thing about G-day games people have to keep in mind.QB’s are not hit.If you think there is not much difference playing QB in a green no contact jersey or getting cracked in the mouth in live action…you are in Lala land. The guy that can take the hits and still execute the Offense will be the starter.I don’t care about the name as long as he has a game.

If Murray isn’t better than any other of the other QB’s, then UGA is in for another long season…I’ve seen Murray play in pee wee ball on up and through the State Championship game and haven’t seen a better HS, and possibly college QB…he’s gone against the best during summer and won the MVP and/or the leadership awards…I’ve seen quality receivers flock to get on his team in 7 on 7 games during the summer…there is NO WAY that Murray doesn’t know the playbook and isn’t ready to run the huddle…I hope this is all a smoke screen by Bobo…when Murray steps on the field, everyone else is playing for second place…here’s hoping that CMR, and/ or Bobo, don’t screw this up for everyone…but I will say that if Murray hasn’t won the position already, then he needs to transfer, because sometimes you and the coaches just don’t click…there’s no way that Met could have made up so much in this past year, however if Met comes through the spring game and he looks 100% better than he did at the last game-day, then he has a chance, because he was really bad even if he was a freshman and was nervous

RED DOG 77

2:36 pm

Hmmm 11:41am 1/9…Without a break here or there, mabe just a simple funny bounce of the ball, or a refs call can be all it takes to be considered a failure or mabe a MNC. 2007 was very much like that for the dogs, I will just let you do the resaerch. Ever heard of cycles in college football? what impresses me most is consistancy. CMR 90 wins in 9 seasons, pretty impressive to me, perhaps not to you.Wonder how those who follow Southern Cal have felt this year? or mabe Oklahoma, poor ol Michigan if I am not mistaken is the winningest program in major college football history……what were they ? something like 3w 9l or so? Then there is Notre Dame, also aa traditional powerhouse…..flat on their faces of late….Heck Alabama lost to La. Monroe just year before last, before that they were pathetic over the preveous decade. Mabe you are a Dog fan mabe not ,I dont know. Ga. Tech was horrible for what ? 10 years before last year? The reason I mention these other programs is I am pretty sure all of them have had top 10 or close to it for some time…..Again , cycles, I am a proud UGA grad and I support UGA atheletics. particularly football, and yes I would love a MNC, however I would never trade consistancy over a decade for just one MNC and then 9 down years. I will take CMR AND HIS 90 wins in 9 seasons any day. Mabe you dont see it that way, but I think if you will check there are only 1 or 2 other programs that have been as consistant as UGA has during the CMR era…………..Perhaps you should check with BuLLdawg, dude seems to know his statistics, and the boy sure can type!……RED

Also for a prototype qb Murray does seem a bit short, however, Ibelieve he is listed at 6ft. 1in. mabe thats a stretch, but wasnt David Green and Eric Zier about the same? I believe I would take either one of them in a flash, wouldnt you? I do agree though, Mettenberg sounds like a real hoss, sort of like the Mallett kid at Arkansas, but somewhere along the way seems I have read his accuracy is pretty poor….mabe CMR and Bobo can coach him up…..Regards, RED

don’t know where you folks get the idea that Murray is short. I’ve stood right next to him and he’s over 6 ft. The guy moves and throws great outside the pocket. Just wait.

Freshness and enthusiasm that are legit

January 10th, 2010
10:35 am

The two newer UGA Qbs bring a new freshness and enthusiasm to the team. That is often overlooked in such things. Joe Cox was the “hold your breath” QB for UGA this past year, because sometimes you end up with that kind of stand in situation. Last summer Aaron hurt his biceps tendon or something and it prevented him from getting in and so they red shirted him. Good! 2009 is over. Now? We have both ZM AND AM. I for one am glad.

These QB kids are good and will boost UGA to decent heights within two years. Logan Gray? Athletic and is better placed to be a receiver, punt returner, etc. He can help UGA in these spots.

UGA will be fine in 2010 and much better in 2011 ……………OUR D COACH WILL be the key. Can he motivate and inspire? Time will tell. His position coaches will be very, very important too.

I am for one am very excited about the UGA future in football and BASKETBALL.

Go Dogs.

I saw Mettenberger at the G-Day game and for him to be considered a contender for the starting role, he would require 100% improvement. In short he looked like a deer in an 18 wheelers high beams. Mettenberger is slower than Molasses in January. Murray looked way more polished to me and everyone else who saw him at G-Day.

I hope this shootout does not drag on into Fall practice. I hope Murray can solidify the starting role so we don’t have any controversies going into the season.

Not fair to label Gray a bust just yet. The kid threw six passes and was put into an impossible situation against Florida. He looked far better than Cox in last year’s G-Day game and, IMO, should have started. Let’s at least give him a chance.
