It’s a great day to be a Georgia Bulldog

The Dogs got clutch play from Ricky McPhee. (Curtis Compton / AJC)

The Dogs got clutch play from Ricky McPhee. (Curtis Compton / AJC)

Say this for Mark Fox: It didn’t take the new Georgia basketball coach long to get his first signature win.

To be sure, the men’s basketball Dogs are still an undermanned unit that faces a long, tough slog in the SEC wars beginning Saturday at No. 3 Kentucky. But facing No. 17-ranked Georgia Tech, a heavily hyped team with the nation’s most celebrated freshman class, Fox’s team played smart, hung tough and, most importantly, showed good coaching. The fact that the Dogs currently are the SEC’s best free throw-shooting team is an indication of that.

Georgia’s lone quality player, Trey Thompkins, came up big with 20 points in the 73-66 upset win, but here’s the key to what kind of night it was for the heavily favored Jackets: The Dogs’ Ricky McPhee, a former walk-on, hit two key baskets near the end of Tuesday night’s game at Stegeman Coliseum and scored 16 points, twice as many as Tech’s much heralded Derrick Favors, who many expect to be the latest in the string of talented players putting in a year at the Institute before going on to the NBA.

So the Dogs won their 13th consecutive game against Tech at the Steg, setting the tone for a great evening for anyone who favors red and black as the football Jackets learned the hard way that before you start talking about making a run at the BCS title next year, you first have to win this year’s bowl game. And the list of folks Paul Johnson would like to punch continues to grow.

If it weren’t Tech, you could almost feel sorry for them. First major bowl since LBJ was president, and they come up short. Again.

But it was Tech. So you’ll see a lot of smiling Bulldogs fans today.

With the Lady Bulldogs also having beaten their North Avenue rivals recently, the stars definitely seem correctly aligned of late. As the final seconds ticked away in the basketball game in Athens, those students in the “Wreck Tech” T-shirts who made it to the game despite school not being in session yet started chanting, “Just like football!”

OK, Diamond Dogs, it’s your turn next!

RENNIE NOT READY YET

As expected, Reshad Jones made it official Tuesday that he’s leaving school a year early to go pro, but reports from ESPN and elsewhere that Rennie Curran would join him in the announcement proved premature.

Apparently Curran is still undecided, which at this point can only be viewed as a good thing by Dogs fans. Odds are he’ll still skip his senior year for the NFL, but perhaps he’s waiting to see who Georgia’s new defensive coordinator will be.

Curran told Marc Weiszer of the Athens Banner-Herald Tuesday afternoon that he “definitely” hasn’t made up his mind. Curran said “it’s pretty funny to read newspapers reporting that sources close to me [say that he’s leaving]. I’ve told people many times that before I make a decision I’m going to talk it over with Coach [Mark] Richt and my family and we’ll go from there. I don’t know what information they’re getting that I’ve already decided to leave when they haven’t gotten it from me.”

I still think Curran will leave. But my fingers are crossed.

Bill, don’t you think you’re being a bit harsh with your “lone quality player” statement about Trey Thompkins and the bball team. Travis Leslie looks pretty good to me. He was on Sportscenter’s top 10 twice this morning and he has been a huge factor for the team up to this point. Trey Thompkins isn’t the only quality player on the team…

Loved the UGA basketball game last night. So much fun to view and wow, was I impressed with the free throws. Travis Leslie missed one that I recall late in the game but for the most part, that was THE indication for me that UGA is getting better. In three years, if Cox can get some great kids, UGA ought to be competitive. He only needs one or three really great kids to build around and he can make a nice statement in the SEC.

UGa fans would love to see on a regular basis, a 20-11 or 22-9 type of team. If he can win say 18 NEXT year, then in 2012 win say 21 or 22 and end up fourth or so in the SEC, that is success for UGA. The big dance every three or so years would be fabulous to UGA fans. I am one of them.

As for the Orange, it revealed once again, that if Tech plays a marginal football school ( like UGA was in 09 ) they will lose. In other words, any major conference team in the fourth or fifth best spot in their conference like UGA my alma mater, can whup them. Tackling is the key and Iowa tackled and in 08 UGA did not and that is why Richt has lost ONE to the G one T alibans in his 9 years.

Tech is a joke and when Chan’s athletes leave………..they will be around 7- 4 every year. By the way, my senior year in HS was 67 and I ALSO SAW tech lose then in the Orange to a SEC mediocre team. HAHAHAHAHAH Some things never change over 43 years.

“Slap em hard”, screamed the man with boobs. “Slap em hard, they ain’t got nuttin on me.” I am sure on the bus ride home CPJ was throwing his resume out the window hopeing to land any coaching job in state of Florida. HAHAHAHA

The trade school’s performance last night in Miami shows just how weak the ACC is. You are right about last night, UGA winning in b-ball and the nerds losing in the Orange Bowl made it a special night.

Iowa as well as UGA exposed this offense run by CPJ, (A high school offense). It is one demensional and with no passing attack against good teams you will get beat. It is a good thing Nesbit is at tech, at UGA he would be third string. Talk about poor passing skills, he’s lucky he playes in the ACC. Do you think even Vandy would want him? No way.

as for tech, that high powered offense scored 7 pts last nite,,,7!!! they’re about to lose several key guys also.. we’re losing R.Jones, who really only had 2 good games in his career here, and maybe Rennie, who would be a big loss, but can definately be overcome.

UGA Class of 89 --GT fan for life

1:05 pm

Since so many UGA fans feel compelled to surf the GT blogs I thought I’d come on over. It’s really funny how obsessed UGA fans have become with Georgia Tech. I thought you guys didn’t care about the Jackets?

It was a very good season –great if we had won the OB and beaten UGA.

Any time that you win 11 games, win a conference championship and play in a BCS bowl game it is certainly cause for celebration. Everyone will get over the hangover of last night –I had a rough night myself but I’m ok now …it’s college football, it’s Georgia Tech so it is important to me, but it’s only college football, there are many more important things in life. Doesn’t make swallowing a loss any easier though.

A very fun season to be at BDS with so many games going down to the wire (on the road as well).

GT won 11 games –and has so much room for improvement. Imagine what the possibilities are if we get a defense that’s capable of stopping the opposition with some consistency, bring in some o-linemen who are a better fit for the TO, develop a consistent passing game, etc.

GT 11-3
ACC Champions
BCS Bowl bid

…a very good season is now in the books.

I enjoyed the ride

- – - – -

The Georgia Tech football team has some deficiencies
The Georgia Tech basketball team has some deficiencies

But despite those deficiencies:

–The Georgia Tech football program is now better than the Georgia football program as GT won 11 games and still has a ways to go before being considered a really really good team, but they will get there.

–The Georgia Tech basketball team will always be better than the Georgia basketball team.

Everyone stated that no one could stop the triple option offense and that D.Morgan was going to give Stanzi hell. Sounds very similar to “GA can not possibly slow down J.Johnson and TAMU” and Von Miller will be in the backfield on every down. A&M scored 14 pts on our 1st string defense, thats it! Yes it was A&M, but we were supposed to get blown out of the building by their offense and didnt. Now, everyone says “oh you were supposed to win that game”. Im sick of these analyst I think they all have the M Bradley disease. Everyone talks about us not having a D cord., neither does FLA!!!, they dont even have a steady coach! Reggie has the always-present risk of injury so this might be a dumb move but, IF he came back for another year (after all, kids coming out of college are still awfully young, whether or not they realize it)…..

He could BLOW UP the SEC next year and make a very loud statement (not to say he hasn’t already made one but, with the “lingering” whispers about his size, maybe it’s worth shutting them up). Don’t know if he/family could afford an insurance policy against catastrophic injury but, with a policy in place, I’d love to see him get his due in this league and, thereafter, his due in the NFL where I expect he’s going to play for a long time.

I don’t relish that Tek lost their bowl game. When they are not playing the Dawgs I usually pull for them. They are from the State. It was obvious that their offense was one dimensional and Iowa had a long time to prepare to shut down the run. Give the Iowa defense credit. But the Tek defense kept them in the game. It could have been a lot worse.

It is great to see the Dawgs BB team begin to rise. Maybe we are really turning the corner. It’d really help to see a few more upsets.

Of the two Rennie Curran probably has the better shot at entering and sticking in the NFL. If he stays his Sr. Year then all the better for us.

First – Congrats to UGA on a great game last night at Stegman. This was a bitter pill to swallow – however – I am convinced that this tough loss will benefit us down the road. Again – gutsy performance by UGA’s basketball team.

Second – a bad night in Miami – yet – we won the ACC – made it to a BCS Bowl in CPJ’s second year – and our future looks very good. Give Iowa credit – they were the better and stronger team.
Look forward to the next war in Athens next year between the hedges.

Go JACKETS!

Bremen Dawg – you are late to work ….again.

I noticed that your are continually late for second shift duty and your time card shows you run about 15 minutes late every other day.

What’s the excuse this time? Wind shake the Double Wide and had to inspect the tie downs? Bow season ending? Got confused again reading the directional signs on the highway to the plant?

By the way – when your done sweeping the halls – my trash can needs to be emptied.

Good thing that all of the Tech grads you work for have pity on your education and your family – and by the graces of Bobby Dodd are keeping you employed…for now.

Tech BB team is overrated, but we all know the Dawgs are terrible if BB. Granted they won the game, but it isn’t saying much by beating a Hewitt coached team. He’s lost he niche since going to the Final Four. I think he is the most overrated coach in america. He can get the best players and they still lose. As far as football is concerned, get ready for next year cause it’s gonna be a tough one for both teams. They both have something to prove on considering the Dawgs had a bad season and the Jackets had a good season but flopped at the end. That being said, I hope both sides understand that it’s gonna be a struggle next year. UGA trying to get back to what they used to be and Tech trying to pick up the pieces.

ice dawg – thanks for the positve comments about Tech. I am in similar position in that I will root for UGA except when playing Tech as I grew up rooting for both teams – and have many friends and family that went to UGA.

This STATE is blessed with some incredible PUBLIC colleges – leading the way are GA TECH and UGA – making affordable a quality higher education to hopefully add earning power to all of it’s graduates.

8. When you look at the tech student body, you begin to feel pretty good about your own appearance.
7. You see people who seem to be happy WITHOUT pretty women around.
6. Plenty of available parking close to the stadium.
5. Those delicious free hot dogs and cokes.
4. It’s a safe refuge from the surrounding area in Atlanta.
3. Singing “helluva helluva…” all night long makes you feel like such a bada$$.
2. Watching high school caliber football is such an American thing.

Overrated – Hewitt is not overrated – nobody rates him very high. Nost Tech fans are ready to get rid of this clown – who is more interested in providing black kids a stepping stone to the NBA than getting them an education. He has played the race card in justifying his position and college basketball. He obviously does not get it – or maybe it’s me – I don’t get it.

My thoughts are that your get the best talent you can – perform the best you can – and make sure that they get a great education!

His teams underachieve and he always has some kind of excuse. We screwed up on his contract – and if it were not for his recent recruiting classes that showed promise – he would be deeper hot water than he all ready is.

If Tech has a mediocre year – he will be gone soon!

Another failure in a bowl game by the overrated yellowjackets. GA owns this state and in 2010, look for the Dawgs to make a run to the SEC east title!!!! Florida’s down and their coaching staff is in disarray. UGA’s loading up with talent on both sides of the ball. They’ll hire Kirby Smart next week and be ready for action!! Tech will end up in a minor bowl next year, sponsored by a nut company somewhere. Ga blows out Tech: 40-20!

The irony, UGA has a down year and beats Tech in their best season since ’91. UGA won their bowl game, while Tech lost theirs. UGA BCS BOWL GAME RECORD: 2-1, GT: 0-1. I think GT is going to have a hard time in bowl games and recruiting. The type of offense they run limits the type of players they can recruit and a month to prepare for the option gives teams plenty of time to hammer out the responsibilities’ for the defense. Ask yourself this question if you were a DL would you want to go to tech to be cut blocked every week?

Cuz- Cut out the games against Ga. SOuthern and Western Kentucky, make every conference play a champ game, conference champs make the playoffs, 2 spots for “at large bids”, 8 teams, use current BCS bowls plus 4 more, keep other bowls so that 6-6 teams can continue to be rewarded, celebrate the best college football season the world has ever known.

Rick S is right. I too was skeptical of this hire, until I went to Gwinnett Arena and saw how Fox handled the players in the Illinois game. That Sunday night, I watched the Mark Fox Show. Everyone should listen to him speak before forming an opinion. He has it all, the knowledge, the vision, a plan, and the ability to relate to players. Most importantly, he knows when to teach, when to praise, and when to reprimand, an ability Felton REALLY lacked.

Too bad for Tech. I was hoping they would pull out a win. The biggest problems that I see for tech are the O and D lines. Lose the battle in the trenches and you will usually lose the game. Tech has some very good skill players on D but needs a bigger and stronger D line. The key to the Tech O is Nesbitt. I like that kid, he reminds me of Hines Ward, tough with a capital T, but stop Nesbitt and you
you stop Tech. Again the line is the key, stop the dive play and lead draw and don’t let your ends overpersue and Tech can be beaten.

GA Tech’s program has always been a big joke. Everyone knows that Tech Lies and Cheats. Everyone!

Paul Hewitt is the worst coach in America. If Tech people were very smart, they would have already fired him.

Paul Johnson runs a high school wishbone offense. Any school that runs that offense admits that it can’t compete with the big boys so they agree to run a “gimmick” offense to try to steal a few wins. Great players will NEVER want to go to GA Tech as long as Paul “Gimmick Offense” Johnson is the head coach. Plus, Paul Johnson has to be the ugliest coach in America. He looks like an old women if you look very closely. He has at least 3 chins. He’s perfect for the ugly GA Tech fan base. LOL!

No other school will ever want to hire Paul Johnson or Paul Hewitt. Ga Tech is “stuck” with those two coaches for years. I love it! LOL!

How many people do you know that is named Paul? LOL! The Georgia Tech Institute of Paul. LOL!

I’m glad the dawgs beat us, hope they do it every year while we are tied to this horrible coach. UGA had the guts and sense to fire there’s, but Tech’s administration isn’t that tough. They’re afraid all of the democrats will transfer, and they will have to forfeit a whole year of play. We have nothing now, so why would another year make a difference. What if UGA had 3 blue chippers on their team, wouldn’t you expect to win most every game?

GaGator- Harvin is on a much better team than Stafford & Moreno, which believe it or not has somthing to do w/ what kind of season a player has sometimes. Don’t get me wrong….Harvin’s great, but considering that Staff was drafted by a team that was the worst in football before he arrived…they didn’t win any games before he arrived, & they won 2 this yr. I know that’s not great, but it’s improvement. A lot of QBS wouldn’t be good on that team. A lot of times the kind of season a skill player has…especially at QB & RB…has to do w/ how good the blocking is on the OL. That does make a difference folks. If you want to single out one incident like that. I could say that Champ Bailey is probably the best DB in the last decade…so there!

This guy is the biggest blowhard. I don’t understand why he gets a blog. He hardly ever writes anything intelligible and, apparently, Tech losing is the only thing that makes him ever feel good (see the “All the way turnt up” article). What a loser. Get a shave you mutt loving dork.

Also, I will point out that most Georgia Tech people are so proud of the young men on the football team we cannot contain it. You know why? Because they played hard, are winners on and off the field, and because they represented everyone associated with Tech with class and humility. I was at the Orange Bowl and I loved being there with my greater Georgia Tech family, win or lose. Why UGA people hate on the fact that the Jackets had a good year is simply amazing. Tech is not UGA. It is different. It is smaller. It is academically elite. It’s alumni are spread across the country. It does not have “street” (or “farm”) fans like UGA. And the truth is, UGA is going to get more recruits, have 40000 more fans at its games, and is going to win the majority of the football games that these teams play. We don’t care. Yet, UGA fans just sit around and make “A-She-She” comments and what not or a 60 year old woman smelling of cigarettes will shout “nerds” at Tech students. Why are you so preoccupied with Tech? Is your inferiority complex related to the “real world” comparison between the schools that great? It is mind boggling.
