UGA-Tech rivalry goes full-bore all year long

Any time Georgia and Georgia Tech meet in athletics, there’s plenty of trash talk and bad feeling between the two camps.

Which is as it should be. What good is an in-state rivalry if the word “hate” doesn’t get bandied about regularly? And in that regard, the folks from North Avenue make it so easy. …

The main focus of the rivalry between the two schools may be in football, but it’s hard to beat the atmosphere at a men’s basketball game between the Dogs and Jackets, especially the student sections.

Unfortunately, the UGA athletic association schedulers, who didn’t do Mark Richt any favors this year, have made it tough for new coach Mark Fox as well by agreeing to play Tech in basketball a couple of days before classes resume at UGA, thus possibly negating some of the Dogs’ home court advantage, which has been considerable in this series. UGA has won 24 of 27 games played against Tech at Stegeman Coliseum.

Remarkably, the Jackets haven’t won in Athens in men’s basketball since Gerald Ford was president. Of course, the game wasn’t played on either school’s home court for a while. The series returned to the campus arenas in the 1995-96 season after 14 straight meetings at the old Omni in Atlanta. The home team has won every time since, with one exception: Georgia’s 75-70 win on Dec. 6, 2000. Tech’s last win in Athens came 13 tries ago, on Nov. 26, 1976.

Hopefully enough students will already be in town to have the Steg rocking tonight, but reserved-seat tickets for the game are still available. My new editing duties on the AJC’s print side will keep me from attending, but I’m hoping any of the folks in red and black who are free tonight will make the trek over to the Classic City and pack the house. The ticket booths at the Steg open at 5:30 p.m. and tickets are $15. Student tickets are $2 (student ID required) and are on sale until 3 p.m. today at the UGA Bookstore and from 4 to 5:30 at the coliseum. The first 1,000 UGA students in attendance will receive a Wreck Tech T-shirt.

Meanwhile, the football Yellow Jackets will be playing their bowl game against Iowa tonight, which raises an interesting situation for UGA fans, who generally aren’t too fond of the Big 10. But if there’s anything UGA fans hate worse than the Big 10 (and Notre Dame), it’s Georgia Tech. So not surprisingly I’m hearing from a lot of Dogs fans that they’ll be pulling for Iowa in tonight’s Orange Bowl.

What about you? Can you bring yourself to pull for a Big 10 team as long as they’re playing the Jackets?

RESHAD AND RENNIE

Not many folks are surprised to hear that safety Reshad Jones won’t be returning for his senior season with the Bulldogs, and the expectation is that linebacker Rennie Curran probably will join him in leaving for the NFL. ESPN says they’re both likely to make the announcement official later today.

Jones had his ups and downs as a Dog, particularly with pass coverage and tackling, but finished strong this season and made a couple of key interceptions. Curran has been the leading tackler and one of the mainstays of the defense for the past couple of years. They’ll both be missed next year, when whoever winds up as Georgia’s new defensive coordinator will have a pretty big rebuilding job on his hands, with graduation meaning the departure of the heart of the D-line as well.

I think these dawg fans are just jealous. Enjoy the Orange Bowl, and maybe one day you will make it to a BCS bowl.

GT – 11-2
UGA – 8-5

And how many national championships? Why don’t you call me when you can beat Florida, or Tennessee, or LSU, or Kentucky.

GT – 11-2
UGA – 8-5

Enjoy the Orange Bowl.

Great post Bill. And yes, the Trade School fan base does make it quite easy to hate them. They are the most foul, vile, hypocritical, uninformed, bandwagon fan base in the nation.

This is a no-brainer. I WILL BE PULLING FOR IOWA!

But it’s another mismatched bowl game. Iowa can in no way match up with GT and will get blown out unfortunately.

BUT GO HAWKEYES!!!!!!

As for basketball, that’s a joke. UGA will lose biiiig time.

Go BB Dawgs. We have the right coach but Tech has way more talent. Look for Jackets to win tonight in BB. Keep the faith, CMF will get the job done in time. We will never be Kentucky but hoping to be a factor in SEC in a few years. The fans will support a winner but really can you blame them for a wait and see attitude? There was a day when Tech was the MacDaddy of football in South. Bobby Dodd was great coach but didn’t see the future when he got out of SEC for petty personal reasons. Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, etc. were great rivalries and the place was packed every game. Why would you buy a season ticket to see Duke, NC State, Wake Forest, etc. Can’t say as I blame them. The Dawgs have hardly ever been a factor in BB, except for the Tubby years and here and there. Can’t say I blame us either.

Yup, you are right there hahahaha!!! That bandwagon is currently in Miami getting ready to see GT play in the Orange Bowl. I figure a couple more 8-5 seasons, and we will pick up a few more stragglers, at least the ones who haven’t already hopped onto the Florida bandwagon.

Go Hawkeyes!!!

As far as this “representing the state” business, how does Georgia Tech represent this state when a majority of their students aren’t from here and don’t stay here when they graduate? Its a transient trade school which a vast majority of Georgians have no connection to. Tech fans like to act all high and mighty and say that this doesn’t bother them, but underneath all the arrogance I sense a deep seeded jealousy of UGA’s prominence in this state. We are the Yankees and they are the Mets. We are the Lakers and they are the Clippers. It absolutely kills them.

Anyway, go Hawkeyes again. I’d love for Johnson to tell us how this game didn’t matter.

30-24.

Uhhhh, nice try there ‘dawgfan’, but to put UGA in the same class as the Yankess and Lakers is stretching it a little. The Yankees and Lakers have won at least 1 championship in the last 30 years.

Try again genious!

Enjoy the Orange Bowl!

Have I mentioned that GT is playing tonight in the Orange Bowl? It is one of those BCS bowl games.

GT – 11-2
UGA – 8-5 (lost to Kentucky at home……who lost to Clemson in Music City bowl)

Tech

January 5th, 2010
1:16 pm

The majority of Tech’s students are from Georgia. And some of the best of Georgia’s leaders went to school there. The degree is respected worldwide, I know because I’ve seen it first hand. How often do you meet someone in another state or country who is impressed that you graduated from UGA? Probably never. Trust me, no inferiority complex here, and UGA is not as big of a national powerhouse as you think it is, the gap between Tech and UGA isn’t that large.

Facts

Georgia Tech and Texas are the only two schools to currently have Top 20 teams in all three major sports. Georgia Tech is the only top 20 academic school to have ranked teams in all three major sports, and they do this annually. The best combination of academics and sports east of the Mississippi, don’t hate.

Tech:

“UGA is not as big of a national powerhouse as you think it is”

That’s funny because I travel for work throughout much of the country and most of the people that I talk football with don’t even realize that GT has a football team. If you ask them what college football team represents the state of GA and they always say the Bulldogs. I guess GT truly is irrelevant.

You cant even really compare UGA and Tech basketball. I mean we play in the ACC….its the same logic that SEC fans use for football. The ACC has 11 national titles and a final four participant or two year after year. Tech could lose to UGA in basketball every year and still be the “better program” just because we play in a nationally respected conference where a 8-8 conference record is considered good. With that being said Tech should win tonight with the insane amount of talent that we have( we start 3 mcdonalds all americans) but…lets be real…paul hewitt is not a good coach and will find a way to make this game very close to an inferior team. There will be very few tech fans in attendance tonight though….everyone is watching the orange bowl or attending the game.

Vince,

I doubt your grandfather wasn’t even born yet the last time Tech won a national championship out right. Claiming Michigan State’s and Colorado’s titles as your own is a bit pathetic. Fyi, UGA has 2 National Titles. Using Tech logic they would have 12.

Wiley,

So a team could lose to the same opponent, year after year, and still manage to be the better program? Hmmm….Tech rationale is strange…..

What is the difference between a fleabag and a sewer system? Sewer systems are good for something and were designed by engineers. However, they are very alike in that they both are full of crap, stink like hell and best kept out of sight.
