Bulldog Nation plays waiting game

Like sands through the hourglass …

As Mark Richt’s search for a defensive coordinator crawls along like a TV soap opera, Dog fans must do something they’re not generally known for: exercise patience.

Each week seems to bring another hot name to the fore who then milks Georgia’s interest in him for a raise from his current employer. Such is the coaching game.

The consensus media view now seems to be that Kirby Smart’s statement at a press conference Sunday that “it’s been great having these players and doing this” at Alabama and “I’m looking forward to it next year” pretty much indicates he’s taken himself out of the running for the UGA job.

Well, maybe. We still don’t have a definitive statement from Smart. He hasn’t said flatly that he’s staying at Alabama. He hasn’t said he’s not coming to Georgia. That may simply mean he’s still negotiating his new deal with Nick Saban. But we don’t know.

Perhaps that means Richt will end up hiring his new DC from the ranks of NFL assistants. But it wouldn’t surprise me a bit for his ultimate choice to be someone in the college game whose name has yet to rise to the top of the rumor circuit.

Tim DeRuyter (Air Force Academy)

Tim DeRuyter (Air Force Academy)

Here’s one possibility: All along, one of my brothers’ friends has been touting Tim DeRuyter, the DC at Air Force for the past three seasons. His rationale: DeRuyter’s defense ranked 11th nationally this season in total defense and scoring defense, and his pass defense was ranked fifth. He’s known for aggressive defenses with a lot of takeaways. And that’s at Air Force.  Imagine what he could do with SEC caliber players.

Now Buck Belue has climbed aboard the DeRuyter bandwagon, noting in his blog: “Air Force played some great defense this season. Just ask Houston. The Cougars and that big-name QB [Case Keenum] got 14 points and dude threw 6 interceptions in their bowl game loss to Air Force. Why does this matter here in Atlanta? The Air Force defensive coordinator might end up in Athens.”

I have no idea whether DeRuyter is on Richt’s list of potential defensive coordinators or not. But if Smart really is saying no to Richt, someone like the Air Force coordinator just might surge to the front of the pack.

LADY DOGS EQUAL BEST START

Kudos to Andy Landers’ undefeated basketball Lady Bulldogs, who came from behind Sunday to beat Alabama 52-44 and improve their record to 14-0, matching the best start in the program’s history  achieved by the 1998-99 Final Four team.

The No. 9-ranked Lady Bulldogs rallied from a double-digit halftime deficit in Tuscaloosa to outscore the Crimson Tide 32-14 in the second half, opening the half with a 15-0 run and holding Alabama scoreless for the first 9:33 of the second half.

Landers’ team returns to Stegeman Coliseum for a two-game homestand this week, hosting Kentucky at 7 p.m. on Thursday and Florida at 6 p.m. on Sunday. The game with the Gators will be televised on ESPNU.

The longer Kirby just says “I am Happy at Bama” and does NOT deny the UGA job, then the more likely it is he is still a candidate.

I do not think it is very likely by the way that the job is going to Kirby, I just wish he would make a definite statement saying so.

All the rumors that I keep getting from my sources say it IS Kirby, so the longer it drags on, the more likely it is they are right.

I think that this AF guy may do well with disciplined kids but at UGA? Our kids lack ANY of that.

Maybe he could instill that in UGA’s men and maybe that is why he would ultimately be a great choice. It starts with desire, then talent. Without desire ( see UGA’s # 9 ) then you have lethargy, which is where UGA has been on D for about 4 or 5 years.

If Richt posts another 6-5 or 8-5 year, then it will not matter who his coach is. He is nearing the end, unless he can resurrect the program to the level that HE installed in his early days at UGA> All or nothing now with Richt in 010-11. The fans have had enough. Period. Period. Win and win now, like 9-3 ,plus a nice Outback Bowl or better to a 10-2 or 11-1 type year plus a major bowl on every thrid or fourth year. If Richt wins big in 011, he is retiring anyway, I am sure.

Go Dogs. On O in 2010 we should be oustanding, as A Murray has been in the system for two full practices rounds by the end of 010 summer camp and therefore he KNOWS that system. Besides, he is a complete QB and Jumping Joe Cox was only a plodder if he had to run. Murray can run aand he can pass.

It doesn’t surprise me at all that he’s not commenting given that their game against Texas is right around the corner. The fact that he’s not categorically denying it does however leave the door open a crack….or it could mean nothing at all.

Even if it isn’t Smart, I think we can all agree that we’re likely to see a significant DC upgrade next season which is something to which I’m certainly looking forward.

While the USAFA DC sounds good, one also needs to examine the MWC (and I live out here) to see if the defense is that great or they just faced weak offenses. Where do the offenses they played against rank nationally?

Also, while it is true he achieved that with Air Force kids, he also would be facing SEC athletes on the other side of the ball.

The following are total offense rankings (http://www.ncaa.com/sports/m-footbl/stats/ncaa-m-footbl-fbs-team-total-offense.html).

Minnesota 109
New Mexico 103
San Diego St 86
Navy 77 (surprised by that one)
TCU 5
Wyoming 107
Utah 54
Colorado St 79
Army 117
UNLV 78
BYU 23
Houston 1

Does not look like they faced a lot of high powered offenses.

BTW, just for comparison, UGA faced the following offenses:

UF 8
Tech 12
Auburn 18
Ark 22
UT 60
Okie State 70
SC 82
ASU 89
UK 92
Vandy 110
LSU 112 (my gosh, that is horrible)
Texas A&M 6

I think the Air Force guy would be a great choice, perhaps better than smart. Let’s see how Bama does against Texas. I have been very disappointed in the SEC in a number of the bowl games so far. Certainly Chavis at LSU did noting to distinguish itself. The bad turf killed team speed, but that should have given the defense a chance to shut Penn State down.

I know it is football, football, football for most Dawg fans and it is for me too. However, I am excited about the Lady Dawgs. If they continue to play like they have so far, with a liitle luck, maybe they can get Andy’s first NC. They deserve better support than they get. Everyone ought to plan to see them at least once this year. Also, I think they deserve more TV time. I also think Fox, may get us excited in another year or two. I also like the idea of the

Bill, I like ya buddy but, this is about as nothing as a column I’ve ever seen you write on the Dawgs. If DeRuyter was a candidate, Belue and his big mouth probably just blew it for him. Why people continue to quote Belue is beyond me. He is about as significant as Saint Simons and about as loyal to Bulldog Nation.

Kirby Smart isn’t “out” of the fray until a DC has been named. Seems to me quite logical why the search continues, Kirby hasn’t coach his last game for the year.

HAPPY NEW YEAR BILL, AND TO ALL DAWG FANS ON THE BLAWG

AS THE COX ERA CAME TO A SATISFYING END, I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT WHAT THIS OFFSEASON AND THE UPCOMING YEARS ARE ABOUT TO BRING. PERSONALLY, I HAVE NOT GIVEN UP ON KIRBY SMART, MY CANDLE IS STILL LIT, HOPING IT WILL GUIDE HIM HOME. HOWEVER, IF WE DO NOT LAND HIM, I AM STILL EXCITED ABOUT WHOEVER IS COMING IN. ENOUGH OF THE POLLACK FOR DC…. BUT I THINK HE WOULD MAKE A FINE ASSISTANT DEFENSIVE COACH. HE POSSESES GREAT POTENTIAL AND I WOULD LOVE TO SEE HIM ON THE DAWG SIDELINES.

IM ALREADY EXCITED TO GET OUT TO ATHENS FOR THE G-DAY GAME THIS APRIL. AARON MURRAY, WELCOME YOUNG MAN!! THE STARTING JOB IS YOURS TO LOSE, AND THIS IS NOW OFFICIALLY YOUR TEAM. I AND THE REST OF BULLDAWG NATION WILL BE BEHIND YOU THE WHOLE WAY!

I THINK ITS GOING TO BE A GREAT GREAT GREAT NEXT FEW WEEKS FOR COLLEGE FOOTBALL, BEING A LOYAL DAWG FAN! I TRULY BELIEVE WE WILL BE TREATED TO AN EMBARASSING SHOWING BY THE BUGS TOMORROW NIGHT, AND WE WILL GET TO LAUGH A LITTLE HARDER AT THEM OVER THE OFFSEASON. I STIL HAVENT LOST THE CHUCKLE SINCE NOV 28TH, THE GAME WE HEARD ABOUT FOR A YEAR, AND WILL NOT QUIT TALKING ABOUT FOR ANOTHER YEAR. IN ADDITION TO THE BUGS HOPEFULLY BEING BEAT DOWN, I ALSO LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING SEVERAL TECHIE FOOTBALL JUNIORS ANNOUNCING THEY WILL BE LEAVING FOR THE NFL, AND CANNOT WAIT TO ESCAPE THE GLORIFIED HIGHSCHOOL PROGRAM AND OFFENSE THEY HAVE BEEN PLAYING FOR. THIS IN TURN WILL CREATE PANIC AMONGST THE TECH FANS, AS REALITY WILL SETTLE IN THAT THEIR “GLORY DAYS” ARE DONE. NO PLAYER IN HIS RIGHT MIND COMING OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL WILL WANT TO RUN THAT CRAP SHOOT OF AN OFFENSE. PAUL JOHNSON’S DAYS ARE OFFICIALLY NUMBERED.

LET US NOT FORGET THAT ST. TEBOW IS GONE, WHICH SADDENS NOBODY OUTSIDE OF METRO LAKELAND, FL. THE DEVIL’S ASSISTANT URBAN CRIER JUST COULDN’T PHATHOM A TEAM WITHOUT HIS BOY, SO HE WIL NOT BE MISSED NEXT YEAR EITHER (THAT IS IF HE HASN’T CHANGED HIS MIND SINCE ME BEGINNING THIS POST AND SUBMITTING IT). I’M GUESSING JUST ABOUT EVERY OTHER GATOR STARTER WILL BE GONE AS WELL. I AM SURE THERE WILL BE MORE THAN ONE OR TWO RECRUITS CHANGING THEIR MIND ABOUT FLORIDA BEFORE IT IS ALL SAID AND DONE. LET THE IMPLOSION IN GAINSVILLE BEGIN!!!

ERIC BERRY IS GONE, AND THE ENTIRE SEC OFFENSIVE REPRESENTATION IS HAPPY ABOUT THAT! THE TRUE TENNESSEE FANS I KNOW ARE VERY DISTRAUGHT ABOUT HIM LEAVING, BUT THAT WAS INEVITABLE. BEST OF LUCK IN THE NFL ERIC, YOU ARE A TRULY GIFTED PLAYER!

BB, I love women’s basketball only because I have coached it for many years. I will tell you this that the only this the Lady Bulldogs can hope to do is get a #1 seed and not have to face UCONN until the final 4 or championship game. No one is beating UCONN! They are great! The thing that makes the Lady Bulldogs great this year is that Andu finally recruited some young quick guards to go along with a senior veteran post players and of course Ashley Houtes. They will have toss up games this year with Tenn, LSU, and maybe Mississippi State. They should win all of their other games. If they get a #1 seed they could get to the final four but they cant beat Stanford, or UCONN or maybe Baylor with the monster they have inside dunking on other teams. As far as the defense coordinator job, just get someone before signing day. My guess is that it is the TCU DC. Kirby would be an idiot to leave Bama. It may be the dline coach from the Cowboys! It has to be someone from a team that is currently playing in college or pros. If it wasnt then the decision would already had been announced.

Get the Brooks guy from Kentucky – best defensive guy in the business – since he ‘retired’ from Basketucky – he would make a perfect fit and put some FIRE and BRIMSTONE in the bulldogs – something they have lacked since the late great Erskine Russell – all these white outs, black outs, red outs – black helmets, red helmets – all that junk is nothing without a little bit of bite – DawgNation is supposed to be know as the most feared defensive outfit around – sadly it must be said, it isn’t even close to being the second or third most feared – Brooks makes perfect sense – bet he would be a cheap purchase!

Good read as always Bill. I’m not one that will be upset if we don’t land a “big name” guy. I just want someone who can do the job. It’s rare that the top assistants make lateral moves to do the exact same job. I’d almost say I’d be happier with someone from a smaller, lesser known, program with the proven track record and hunger to be in the SEC. Richt will find a winner, people just need to relax.

The fact of the matter is (per a Div-I asst. coach I spoke with over the holidays) is that any decent DC is hesistant to take the UGA job right now because so many games were lost due to the ineffective offense, but the DC got blamed for turnovers. If things are not better in a year or two, then the entire coaching staff may out, so why take the risk of being a short timer? UGA is going to have to pony up a record salary to convince a DC to jump ship right now.

Ginger

1. Smart’s recent comments—-what else could he say…I am happy at Bama…would be the right thing to say since he is working for Saban etc and did not say I am not going to Georgia….so he did not rule anything out…..Thinking that he would talk to UGA, but his statements say to me the price has to be right and then he may or may not would come…Bama is probably the best for him to stay in spotlight and get an HC job one day….Saban is just a championship coach in college ranks. Now question if he is really happy working for Saban — control freak…..but probably he is because he worked for him at LSU, then went to Ga., then went back to Saban at Miami….so he knew what Saban is and was happy going back to him. ……so right now I think Smart is long shot. UGA would have to be willing to really paid well to lure him and Va Tech and LSU kept their coaches.

2. the Tim DeRuyter thought….–intriguing….definitely think Richt should interview him……still believe that we can get a quality DC…..other names include–Sal Sunseri, Tyrone Nix, Todd Grantham etc…

We just gotta be willing to pay and pick the right man…the coach that can coach some defense…aggressive….get turnovers, no dumb penalties, good at making the right D calls at the right time, a coach who can teach players to recognize different offensive sets and plays…that was a big problem this yr..our players not recognizing different O set and plays quick enough…..

A long time and close friend of Kirby Smart recently spent several hours together sipping a few beers. The word is Kirby wants several things: Complete control over the defense and the hiring of his assistants; no interference on recruiting (which means Gardner is gone); $1.8M for 3 years; a much improved weightroom (currently under construction); and for Richt to wait until the MNC game is over. Richt has agreed to all of those things so I’d say Kirby is about a 75% lock. If not, look for a quick hire off of the Dallas Cowboys defensive staff before the weekend is over. Either way, UGA gets a great DC and the recruits should be delighted.

Guessing who our new DC will be is almost as much fun as ranking NCAA teams on their high school recruits. While it’s fun, what’s really important is 3 years down the road. Who knows if Kirby Smart is really qualified…Jasper Sanks, Denaris Ward, and Mudcat were all “can’t miss” prospects. I’m figuring that CMR will hire someone who (1) will coach up our defensive talent and (2) put in a simple scheme which puts our players in position to make the play. And, I don’t think Kirby Smart is that person. Anyway, just my opinion…Go Dawgs!

Offer Kirby $850,000 a year and see if he thinks it is a step back, or maybe $1,000,000. It is only money, and the University of Georgia has it. I can assure you that a lot of money would come back to Georgia in donations, if he is truely the one.

All of these folks like him are clueless and if we listened to him Willie would still be at UGA who should have been let go 4 years ago. The Air Force guy stats are very deceiving because of the level of competition he faced and I dont think he would be a good fit for the dawgs. dawgs need a proven DC , be it in the SEC or an NFL.

I don’t know if Kirby is worth the kind of money it would take to get him in Athems. Right now he has better players that we do on D and we all know that Saban is a defensive guru. I would like for Richt to look at some guys like Tim DeRuyter, we could some of that agressiveness in Athens. He is a low profile guy and the max years you would have Kirby would be 2. You could get this guy and he would be there to prove himself. Then with the extra money, hire a freaking full time special teams coach. You saw what happened in the bowl game with special teams.

Looks like Florida is cleaning our clocks again in the recruiting battle along with Bama and even Auburn according to one recruiting service. Im not too impressed with Mr. Garner anyway. Something is definitely missing if we have these top classes and we struggle with the Ky’s ,Gamec0cks and Vandys. I still cant believe we could only score 14 measly points against a sorry program like South Carolina with a Moreno and a Stafford in the backfield. Not to mention the 2007 debacle playing SC at home. Frankly I dont think the defense is what all is ailing the dawgs either.

Absloutely! The Dogs need a truly great, well-known DC, not some unknown clown such as the guy Richt brought in before Martinez. What was that guy’s name again? Coached at Eastern Michigan State A&M Tech or something like that?

Everyone knows that there are only 2 or 3 decent DC’s in the college ranks. If all 3 of them haven’t gone on national television by now to beg for the UGA job, it’s the end of football as we know it here.

By the way, Air Force faced 3 of the top 11 offenses in D1 this year. That’s SCORING offenses, not YARDAGE offenses, as I keep seeing quoted on here. Level of competition my arse. You B&M all year about points, points, points…so use the same criterion when judging replacements for Willie.

I have to go check the UF blogs…NO WAY those fans are wetting themselves because Meyer didn’t name a replacement for Strong within 20 minutes of his accepting the job at Louisville. Of course, those were the same fans who were calling for Strong’s ouster 2 years ago when the Gator defense was getting trashed on a weekly basis, so you never know.

Or better yet, maybe I’ll go swizzle a 6-pack of malt liquor and get on here and tell everyone about all of my inside information regarding the DC job! Yeah, thaaaat’s theeee ticket! I’ll be back in a few! I, uhm, need to go to the liquor store, er, I mean, answer the phone, I think it’s Mark Ri—er, Evans calling. Yeah, that’s it Damon Evans. He probably wants my advice on something about the new DC. Yeah, he won’t offer anyone without my approval first…because I threatened to withdraw my, uhhhhh, TEN GAZZILLION DOLLAR annual contribution to the program.

Okay, gotta go (ringgg, ringg)…be back soon!

I’ve read much about how much money UGa has to burn on athletics, and that they can buy coaches because of this treasure chest. Check out US News College rankings and you’ll find that the UGa endowment as stated is $50,137.517, compared with UNC’s, for example, which is listed at $2,335,824.025. Maybe UGa grads are apparently giving their money to fund athletics instead of academics. That’s why they truly fit into the SEC.

Tim Deruyter would do as good of a job as any DC you could get. The problem is that UGA has to get the quality players to UGA. I would bet you wouldn’t be seeing STUPID late hit penalties on 4th and 50 under Deruyter. lol

DeRuyter is starting to look like the right man for the job. I’m not so sure I wouldn’t put him above Smart or Muschamp. They’re all great DC’s but getting a guy in here without having to give him a golden parachute and/or the HCIW whether he produces or not seems sensible. Let’s get this guy and see what he can do with the great recruits we have here at UGA. Besides, remember when we were saying “who the hell is this Van Gorder guy?”

Larry Munson, that would ,unfortunately, be true IF your head coach knew what he wanted to do. If I’m a DC (or any assistant for that matter), I would be very hesitant to work for Meyer right now. That’s why a few have left already. They’ll all be fine though. It’s the SEC! The best football in the country. When was the last time an SEC team lost a national championship game? I can’t remember either. The only time an SEC team doesn’t win it is because they got screwed out of playing for it. FACT!

With former ties to the program, I can say this. According to former players close to the program as well, UGA football admin are really working hard to keep their recruiting class. It looks like a couple of their big verbal’s are headed to look at other programs, especially Tennesse who has been working on UGA commitments hard. Tennesse has already snared two UGA targets, that were on the verge of commiting to UGA.

Not Kirby Smart and not W. Muschamp – why – b/c TX defense is not that good if you break it all down – TX is in a weak conference and always has a top 10 recruiting class and their defense gives up a lot of points and yards – the only thing helping TX is the teams they play have a worse defense – AL will prove this point tomorrow night!

And Kirby Smart is not proven – he is just a pawn for Saban and everyone knows that –

I am sure CMR is looking at the stats of some of the Top D’s (that actually play against teams with a good offense) not some over rated defense that plays looser teams with no offense –

Anyway – just wait and be patient and we will have a great D coordinator – GA will be fine
