Bulldog Nation plays waiting game

Like sands through the hourglass …

As Mark Richt’s search for a defensive coordinator crawls along like a TV soap opera, Dog fans must do something they’re not generally known for: exercise patience.

Each week seems to bring another hot name to the fore who then milks Georgia’s interest in him for a raise from his current employer. Such is the coaching game.

The consensus media view now seems to be that Kirby Smart’s statement at a press conference Sunday that “it’s been great having these players and doing this” at Alabama and “I’m looking forward to it next year” pretty much indicates he’s taken himself out of the running for the UGA job.

Well, maybe. We still don’t have a definitive statement from Smart. He hasn’t said flatly that he’s staying at Alabama. He hasn’t said he’s not coming to Georgia. That may simply mean he’s still negotiating his new deal with Nick Saban. But we don’t know.

Perhaps that means Richt will end up hiring his new DC from the ranks of NFL assistants. But it wouldn’t surprise me a bit for his ultimate choice to be someone in the college game whose name has yet to rise to the top of the rumor circuit.

Tim DeRuyter (Air Force Academy)

Tim DeRuyter (Air Force Academy)

Here’s one possibility: All along, one of my brothers’ friends has been touting Tim DeRuyter, the DC at Air Force for the past three seasons. His rationale: DeRuyter’s defense ranked 11th nationally this season in total defense and scoring defense, and his pass defense was ranked fifth. He’s known for aggressive defenses with a lot of takeaways. And that’s at Air Force.  Imagine what he could do with SEC caliber players.

Now Buck Belue has climbed aboard the DeRuyter bandwagon, noting in his blog: “Air Force played some great defense this season. Just ask Houston. The Cougars and that big-name QB [Case Keenum] got 14 points and dude threw 6 interceptions in their bowl game loss to Air Force. Why does this matter here in Atlanta? The Air Force defensive coordinator might end up in Athens.”

I have no idea whether DeRuyter is on Richt’s list of potential defensive coordinators or not. But if Smart really is saying no to Richt, someone like the Air Force coordinator just might surge to the front of the pack.

LADY DOGS EQUAL BEST START

Kudos to Andy Landers’ undefeated basketball Lady Bulldogs, who came from behind Sunday to beat Alabama 52-44 and improve their record to 14-0, matching the best start in the program’s history  achieved by the 1998-99 Final Four team.

The No. 9-ranked Lady Bulldogs rallied from a double-digit halftime deficit in Tuscaloosa to outscore the Crimson Tide 32-14 in the second half, opening the half with a 15-0 run and holding Alabama scoreless for the first 9:33 of the second half.

Landers’ team returns to Stegeman Coliseum for a two-game homestand this week, hosting Kentucky at 7 p.m. on Thursday and Florida at 6 p.m. on Sunday. The game with the Gators will be televised on ESPNU.

My son played for DeRuyter. That guy is a class act and a bad ass coach. Not sure it matters on whether the kids are highly disciplined or not. An athlete steps up. After a pre-season with DeRuyter, they will come around. He REALLY knows the game.

Doesn’t anybody get it but me???? The Dawgs were bad on defense mainly because we did not have good players. They were great in high school but never were worth squat at the next level….duh! I’m not a Martinez fan, but you can’t coach up stupidity and lack of dicipline.

What makes all you bloggers think any of the forementioned
candidates would want to come to Georgia and endure the
pressure from the fans on this site?
And it is not just Georgia, heck, look at Urban at Florida. Tremendous
pressure, probably ruined his health. More so than Richt. Takes a toll on a coach and
their family to try and coach a prima donna program that thinks
they should be in the BCS championship game every year.
I think I would rather work for a program for a little less money
and enjoy life along the way.

For those of us with a life……WHO CARES WHO UGA HIRES AS ITS DC…..the football program will still not be a “REAL” top 10 collegiate program next year or in years to come….the fans are arrogant A#&#s and there is way too much inbreeding,,,ever watch a UGA game on TV when they show the crowd…..enough said!!!!

I would be a good time for David Pollack to get a defensive coaching spot on the Curs if he has coaching interest. He was a hell of a player and it was so very unfortunate that his terrible injury ended his career in the NFL! I enjoyed watching him play….except in Jacksonville! LOL

I agree that it will be a hard sell to any big name DC due to our bad offense. Our turnovers resulted in short fields for opposing teams. Then there were the games when we only had a couple first downs before HALFTIME. CMR needs to show the next DC our potential without Joe Cox running the show. Murray will have the best group of recievers in CF to throw to.

Pollack got good jobs in broadcasting with no experience…now people want him to go strait to another job he’s not even close to qualified for? Really?

The Air Force DC is the best speculation I’ve heard since this kicked off.

Why would Kirby Smart take a step backwards, leaving a vaunted Alabama program as DC, to be the DC at Georgia who is closer to falling out of the Top 50 than getting into the Top 25? Makes no sense.

Why would Smart leave the vaunted Alabama program?

Because the state of Alabama is filled with knuckle-dragging savages.

Actually, we need no improvement to beat Tech. UGA even beat Tech with CMR.

Two reasons that obtaining a “big name” DC is difficult: 1. He will be under the most intense scrutiny imaginable. 2. At the bottom of any UGA defensive game plan are the initials CMR!

If Smart or anyone else is not interested in the job, then they ought to come out and say so, intstead of trying to milk every last dollar out of their present employer a la the guy at VA Tech and the one at LSU. Of course, “being up front” ain’t in style no more. Too bad.

A long time and close friend of Kirby Smart recently spent several hours together sipping a few beers. The word is Kirby wants several things: Complete control over the defense and the hiring of his assistants; no interference on recruiting (which means Gardner is gone); $1.8M for 3 years; a much improved weightroom (currently under construction); and for Richt to wait until the MNC game is over. Richt has agreed to all of those things so I’d say Kirby is about a 75% lock. If not, look for a quick hire off of the Dallas Cowboys defensive staff before the weekend is over. Either way, UGA gets a great DC and the recruits should be delighted.

Guessing who our new DC will be is almost as much fun as ranking NCAA teams on their high school recruits. While it’s fun, what’s really important is 3 years down the road. Who knows if Kirby Smart is really qualified…Jasper Sanks, Denaris Ward, and Mudcat were all “can’t miss” prospects. I’m figuring that CMR will hire someone who (1) will coach up our defensive talent and (2) put in a simple scheme which puts our players in position to make the play. And, I don’t think Kirby Smart is that person. Anyway, just my opinion…Go Dawgs!

Offer Kirby $850,000 a year and see if he thinks it is a step back, or maybe $1,000,000. It is only money, and the University of Georgia has it. I can assure you that a lot of money would come back to Georgia in donations, if he is truely the one.

Well I see ole dawgstephen is back tooting his blog here on the AJC. This guy was a blind homer for …ahem…Willie. All of these folks like him are clueless and if we listened to him Willie would still be at UGA who should have been let go 4 years ago. The Air Force guy stats are very deceiving because of the level of competition he faced and I dont think he would be a good fit for the dawgs. dawgs need a proven DC , be it in the SEC or an NFL.

I don’t know if Kirby is worth the kind of money it would take to get him in Athems. Right now he has better players that we do on D and we all know that Saban is a defensive guru. I would like for Richt to look at some guys like Tim DeRuyter, we could some of that agressiveness in Athens. He is a low profile guy and the max years you would have Kirby would be 2. You could get this guy and he would be there to prove himself. Then with the extra money, hire a freaking full time special teams coach. You saw what happened in the bowl game with special teams.

Looks like Florida is cleaning our clocks again in the recruiting battle along with Bama and even Auburn according to one recruiting service. Im not too impressed with Mr. Garner anyway. Something is definitely missing if we have these top classes and we struggle with the Ky’s ,Gamec0cks and Vandys. I still cant believe we could only score 14 measly points against a sorry program like South Carolina with a Moreno and a Stafford in the backfield. Not to mention the 2007 debacle playing SC at home. Frankly I dont think the defense is what all is ailing the dawgs either.

Hell, he might be the most logical guy if heard in all of the rumorings. He’s young, proven, experienced, have teams prepared every week…….what could you not say good about this guy other than not having SEC connections (which in my opinion would be a good thing)

Dawgs will be required to stand back and let the Gators at the feeding trough for a DC. Florida is the big guy now and they are in the market for a defensive guru. Let’s face it, anyone who is out in the market is going to try to fish for a job offer from the Gators before they consider coming to Athens.
