David Greene figures in quite a few of the games of the decade for the Dogs. (University of Georgia)
Having long ago accepted that the media is determined to mark the ending of millennia and decades a year early (remember, there was no year 0 A.D.), I decided to poll a few UGA friends as to what they view as the Dogs’ greatest games of the past 10 years.
Three games tied for the most support, and I’m pretty sure they’d top just about any fan’s list for this decade:
Georgia’s 26-24 win over Tennessee in Knoxville in 2001. The “hobnail boot” game from Mark Richt’s first season, capped by cool redshirt-freshman David Greene’s throw to Verron Haynes. Says my friend Rusty: “I remember thinking Richt was a genius. What play-calling! Plus it generated one of Larry’s classic calls.”
Georgia’s 24-21 win at Auburn in 2002. The Dogs took the SEC East with Greene’s fourth-down throw to Michael Johnson in the corner of the end zone on the famed “70-X Takeoff” play. One of Georgia’s most dramatic and important victories ever.
Georgia’s 34-14 win over LSU in the 2005 SEC Championship game in Atlanta. The No. 13 Dogs upset the No. 3 Tigers with big plays on offense, defense and special teams, including two early touchdown passes from D.J. Shockley to Sean Bailey right down in the corner where I was sitting.
Coming in right behind those three games was another classic:
Georgia’s 42-30 win over Florida in 2007. My brother Tim calls this the “Dance Fever” game because of the infamous end zone celebration. Summed up my friend Johnny: “This was fun.” Urban Meyer would later tell the world in the third person that Urban Meyer didn’t agree.
Rounding out the Top 10 games of the decade:
Georgia’s 45-20 win over Auburn in 2007 in Athens. The “Blackout” game. My son said it was the “home game of the decade, hands down.” Rusty said it was “the most electric I can ever remember the stadium (including Bama in 1976).”
Georgia’s 51-7 demolishing of Georgia Tech in Athens in 2002. A number of us agreed this was one of the most enjoyable games we’ve ever seen in any decade.
Georgia’s 41-10 win over Hawaii in the Jan. 1, 2008, Sugar Bowl. The Rainbow Warriors came into this game as the media darling and the Dogs proceeded to dominate them in every phase of the game. As Johnny put it: “Not really a great game, but every once in a while it looks and feels good to pound someone in a nationally televised bowl game.” And remembering the TV shots of Hawaii QB Colt Brennan weeping on the sidelines, Tim adds: “Another example of ‘there’s no crying in football.’”
Georgia’s 45-16 win over LSU in Athens in 2004. The Dogs racked up 430 yards of offense against Nick Saban’s Tigers as David Greene threw five touchdown passes. Probably runner-up to the 2007 win over Auburn as best home game of the decade.
Georgia’s 21-10 win over Tennessee in 2000 in Athens. The only game from the Jim Donnan era to make the list, this broke the nine-loss drought against the Vols and gave Donnan his 100th career coaching victory. After Tim Wansley sealed the win with his second interception, the crowd surged onto the field with 1:13 still on the clock. The officials cleared the field, but not for long, and one set of goal posts came down.
Georgia’s 30-24 win over Georgia Tech in 2009 at Grant Field. Not many folks saw this coming, but as Johnny put it: “I just love surprises.”
Other games drawing honorable mention: The 2002 SEC Championship win over Arkansas, the 2006 comeback win over Virginia Tech in the Chick-fil-A Bowl, The 2004 win over Florida, the 2002 win over South Carolina (with the emergence of David Pollack as a star), the Reggie Ball games, the 2006 upset of Auburn and the 2007 overtime win over Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
Some great memories there. Any other games of the decade you’d add to the list?

You left off the real Black-Out game against Bama in Athens 2008 after Dawgs were rated #1. Awesome perfomance by Bama with a 30-0 whitewash in first half. I remember Mo-Reno wasted more energy struting in pre-game than during the game.
Jawga & Richt got a lesson from the master that night. All the pre-week black-out hype by Richt and UGA website went up in smoke once the ball was kicked. I call it the “blow-out affair in Athens”. Looked like a funeral in the Dawgs stands until they left early 3rd qtr. Great game.

Bill – good selections, but I have to put the Hawaii beatdown at the top. The media azzes crowed for WEEKS about how the Warriors and Colt Brennan were going to destroy the Dogs, that we couldn’t stay on the field with them. Watching the Dogs pound Hawaii into the turf was as sweet as anything I’ve seen in a looong time.
Also, unless I missed it, I thought the “one-and-done” win over ‘Bama in Tuscaloosa should have been on the list. Great game, gutsy call, perfectly executed OT winner.

I’ve got your burning question for New Year’s Day : Does every student-athlete for the TN vols on their football and men’s basketball team have a woman who provides their automobile and takes all the raps ?
vols Number 14 men’s basketball team wishes everyone a Happy New Year.
Not wanting to be outdone by the felony armed robbery charges against 3 football players just recruited by Lame Kitten, the men’s basketball team goes on the town all night long to celebrate the vols’ football team loss, and are arrested Friday morning, New Year’s Day, the start of The Twenty-Ten Decade.
In a rental car belonging to a woman, the number 2, 4, 6 and 8 leading scorers of Bruce Pearl’s Number 14 men’s basketball team were arrested on felony gun charges gun under seat of driver with serial number filed off, another gun with serial number still on the gun, marijuana charges for a bag, open container under driver’s seat, and the car was speeding causing Knoxville Police to pull the car over and smell the marijuana recently smoked.
Tyler Smith is Strong Forward and Starter on the vols’ team, as well as team leader. His leadership skills ? Tyler is the 2nd leading scorer on the team. Take 2nd leading scorer, and gather up the 4th leading scorer, and 6th and 8th leading scorers as the first off the bench for Bruce Pearl, get in a car with out of state tag, gather all the guns you can including filed off serial numbers, go buy a bag of pot, smoke it, go the liquor store and get you some alcohol, then go speeding around Knoxville.
Sounds like the football players which Lame Kitten just recruited to ObKnoxiousville with their multiple felony charges of armed robbery, just 3 weeks ago, now, doesn’t it ? Once again, to remind you all, there was a woman who stepped forward and said all the drugs, alcohol, and charges against everyone in that automobile owned by a woman and filled with nothing but TN vols men student-athletes are all her fault, she asserts.
Presumably, these 4 were celebrating the wonderful end to a season full of moral victories for the orange-clad nation. Orange-Clad as in Felony Prison Garb. 14-37 in the Peach Bowl they have LOST the last 3 of in a row by a combined 50 points against the hapless ACC. This loss allowed UGA to take the lead in Bowl Victories over the Tennessee vols with UGA now having the lead at 26 Bowl Wins behind only now Alabama, Southern California, and Pennsylvania State. This 14-37 shellacking in the Peach Bowl to set off the 4 men’s basketball players to their binge here, seemed to occur as the night wore on from this latest 14-37 moral victory of Lame Kitten. This also left the vols 15 Wins less and 11 Losses more than UGA Bulldogs in the Coach Richt Era.
13 Consecutive Seasons, every year starting 1997, UGA has at least 8 Wins, a streak longer today than any other team in America, while the vols were not in a bowl game even the 2008 Season, not even in a bowl game even in the 2005 Season – both 5 win seasons, and follow that up with this season’s 7-6 against a really soft schedule with no win over any ranked team. Yet, this is what these Felons on the vols were celebrating still the morning after the moral victory.
3 Blow-Out Losses for the vols in a row at the Peach Bowl 3-30, 14-27, and now 14-37.
Since Tee Martin was paid $7,000 in a convenience store wire transfer he later admitted after the statute of limitations lying about it every time accused of it at the time, then talking in the 3rd person stated “That was a different Tee Martin; I would not take that money now” – since that bowl game, the vols have WON only 3 Bowl Games in the last 11 years now and counting. And, witnessed UGA be the Higher Ranked Football Team 8 Consecutive Years and Counting now, compared to the vols football team.
3 Bowl Wins in the 11 years since Tee Martin admitted he took $7,000 wire transfer.
3 vols football players just recruited by Lame Kitten charged with felonies.
Now, Bruce Pearl has Felony Charges brought against these 4 vols of his :
Tyler Smith is 2nd leading Scorer on vols # 14 basketball team.
Tyler Smith leads, is 1st on the vols’ basketball team in Assists.
Tyler Smith leads, is 1st on the team in Steals.
Tyler Smith leads, is 1st on the team in Field Goal Percentage.
Tyler Smith leads, is 1st on the team by a wide margin in made free throws.
Tyler Smith is 3rd on the team in Rebounds.
Tyler Smith is 5th on the team in Blocked Shots.
Tyler Smith is a Starter, and is the Team Leader.
Cameron Tatum is the 4th Leading Scorer.
Cameron Tatum is 2nd on the team in Made 3-Point Shots.
Cameron Tatum is 5th on the team in made Free Throws.
Cameron Tatum is 4th on the team in Made Field Goals.
Cameron Tatum is 5th on the team in Assists.
Cameron Tatum is 4th on the team in Steals.
Cameron Tatum is a GREAT swing man.
Melvin Goins is 6th on the team in Scoring.
Melvin Goins is 3rd on the team in Steals.
Melvin Goins is 4th on the team in Assists.
Melvin Goins is 5th on the team in Free Throws.
Melvin Goins is 6th n the team in made 3-Point Shots.
Melvin Goins is a fantastic guard.
Brian Williams is 2nd on the team in Rebounds.
Brian Williams leads the team in Offensive Rebounds.
Brian Williams leads the team in Blocked Shots.
Brian Williams is 2nd on the team in Field Goal Percentage.
Brain Williams is a hell of a great inside player.
These are CLEARLY 4 of the best basketball players in America.
They just beat Memphis in their last game.
They score a ton of points.
They shoot a high percentage of their Field Goals.
They do not shoot free throws particularly well.
But, they do hit their 3-Point Shots.
They are Deft on Rebounds, especially Offensive Rebounds.
They pass the ball as well as any in America and make the extra pass.
They Steal the ball from their opponents.
And, they do not turn the ball over.
These 4 players have not begun their SEC conference games yet.
Does every automobile that every student-athlete at Tennessee on their football and men’s basketball team are actually in, belong to a woman ? A woman who quickly then steps forward and claims all the drugs, open containers, and illegal guns in the automobile and all the blame ?
Just what exactly is going on with the vols ?
They have all these women from the time they are identified in high school who always are there beside them, and providing them their transportation everywhere they go in a car the woman owns, and then she takes the raps as they are charged with Felonies.
What does that job pay ?

2002 auburn georgia game without a doubt best game of the decade. That catch by michael johnson did some many things for us. As my auburn friend put it . . when johnson caught that pass it sounded like a home game for Georgia fans It was so loud. Okay you ACC fans. How about you guys become relevant in the National Title discussion, and we’ll give your conference respect. I’m sorry, but when the champion of your conference loses to two mediocre teams in UGA and Miami, you’re going to catch crap. I for one will give the ACC it’s due. It sends plenty of athletes to the Pros. But top to bottom it’s a conference full of mediocre teams. Just because some of the SEC teams didn’t show up in their bowl games doesn’t mean that the SEC still isn’t vastly superior to the ACC in every way. When the winner of the SEC wins 3 National Tiles in a row( soon to be 4) and 4 so far in this decade, you have to give respect where respect is due. The ACC is clearly superior to the SEC in basketball. Can some SEC teams beat some ACC teams every once in a while? Yes. But does that make the ENTIRE conference overrated? Of course not.

How about I call it like it is: the endzone dance worked in that game. If the Gators hated it so damn much, then they should have done something about it in THAT game. Clearly it worked in that game and clearly it was the catalyst for the second half of that season. A team with a nasty swagger is not a bad thing and it was something that every team under Mark Richt lacked and they WOULD have beaten Ohio State, LSU, and USC at the end of the season if given the chance. Maybe if the Dawgs would have played with that same intensity in 2008 and 2009, they would done better.

Man I am bored!!!I guess I will take over this blog for a little ranting, observations and random musing….AUB 02 was a thriller in my book! The SEC looks a little average this bowl season…college football in general seemed a bit boring in 09…nobody looks great just a little better than good for the top 5…My gut tells me UGA and FSU will meet in a bowl next season…now will that come in the NC game,Peach Bowl or Music City bowl is the question,..the more I think about the NC game the more I see a blow out coming unless of course the BAMA kids are thinking like I’m thinking and come out and lay an egg!A lot of folks seem to think we are waiting until the NC game to name Kirby Smart our new DC…me I don’t know why but I’m thinking it’s going to be the Bama LB coach instead….Mike Leach situation….kinda on the fence on this one….on one hand as a parent I don’t want my kid abused but the Old School in me says these kids today are extremely soft even the football players!!Hell the old fashioned butt whuppings most guys in their 40’s and 50’s like me caught growing up would land our parents in jail today!Erk Russell wouldn’t make it in today’s college football.Times are changing….you have 9 year olds with cell phones these days…when I grew up most folks only had 1 phone and that one was the black rented MA Bell rotary phone!!Anybody remember pulse dialing? They are sending 17 year old boys to jail for having sex with his 15 year old girlfriend but a 35 year old teacher can have CONSENSUAL sex with his 17 year old student?Barrack Hussein Obama is elected president after 8 years of George Bush? But I digress…back to the football.Lame Kitty better crank out a 10 win season here soon or 2011 will be his last in Knoxville.Speaking of the VOLS you best believe THAT game is going to be on Mark Richt’s mind this summer more than even the hated GATORS.!!Demetre Baker…if you don’t know who that kid is I advise you to look up his film.Baker and Brandon Burrows check em out….You will be watching two future stars at UGA.We may lose BJ Butler from this class but I’m feeling like we sign C.Green,Whittaker,Thornton and in a shocker Marcus Lattimore…best class ever for CMR,…for all the talk about UGA under performing with all this talent…what the hell happened to USC AND OKL?Curran may be gone but Jones will be back and be a 1st rd pick along with AJ.UGA will win the SEC east next season but where are we going to face the Seminoles is still fuzzy right now.Les Miles will be coaching in Michigan in 11

My favorite games of the decade are:
1) 2001 Tennessee Game – come from behind win in the last seconds solidified the career of David Greene. And the look on those stunned Vols fans who I was with that day was priceless.
2) 2001 Tech game – The geeks were crowing for a 4th straight win and were favorites at home. David Greene and Verron Haynes sent the bee fateful home early with a cooked Goose and George O’Leary to fib on his resume so he can get out of Atlanta.
3) 2002 Clemson opener – Everyone talks about the great games of 2002, but no one ever mentions the barn burner of an opener and how Georgia pulled it out at the end. A great start to a great season.
4) 2002 Bama game – I remember the “man enough” comments from Pat Dye from the week prior and how Coach Richt used it as motivation to get his team to pull out a great win on the road. Billy Bennett kicking the game winner and the back and forth action were classic. Had to watch this one from home recovering from an illness and it made it that much sweeter.
5) 2002 Auburn Game – 70x Takeoff to Johnson in the corner and the Dawgs were SEC East Champs!!. This one still stings my Auburn buddies to this day.
6) 2002 Tech Game – 51-7 – Welcome to Athens Chan Gailey.
7) 2003 Shutout at Death Valley – UGA was supposed to be 8-4 according to the “experts” and they would lose the opener to a better Clemson team. Well someone forgot to tell Clemson as the Dawgs shut them out 30-0.
2003 Tennessee Game in Knoxville – Casey Clausen ran his mouth all week long about how he could beat UGA with one arm. Close game early until Mr. Sean Jones made Clausen eat every word on a fumble recovery and return as Tennessee looked to score. Dawgs defense turned it up an extra notch on the big mouth and his lasting image was a home massacre at the hands of a team he never beat. 41-14 was purely sweet!
9) 2004 LSU Game – Revenge on St. Nick was awesome and I agree was probably the best home game of the decade.
9) 2005 Boise State – All summer we kept hearing how Boise was coming to Athens and beating the Dawgs. Even our own Tim Brando made that prediction just before the game. But DJ and the boys had other plans and routed the boys from the blue field.
11) 2005 SEC Champ Game – Getting another win over the Tigers and this time avenging that 03 SECCG loss. The beginning of the end for Jamarcus Russell. Don’t think he ever recovered from that game.
12) 2007 OK State Game – Another season opener at home the Dawgs were supposed to lose according to ESPN and other experts. Dawgs shut down that Cowboy offense and run away with this one.
13) 2007 Florida Game – End zone dance and the Tebow sack-a-thon. Dawgs get an impressive win over the Gators.
14) 2007 Auburn Game – The Original Blackout
15) 2009 Tech game – No one…..AJC, 790, 680, ESPN, etc…. thought the Dawgs stood a chance. Well Coach Richt and Coach Bobo decided to beat the bees at their own game and run it down their throats. 30-24 and We Run This State says it all.

Hey Mike B – The out of conference schedule is usually easier for SEC teams because of the fact that they are — duh – out of conference! ACC backers bring this up every year when a couple of ACC teams beat a couple of lower tier SEC teams in bowls. There is no debate here. Everybody knows the SEC is superior. Look who is playing for the NC. Oh, and who played last year? Oh yeah, and who played the year before? 30 – 24 baby! You Jacket people can gloat next December if you beat Ga. For now – you are second rate in this state! I love this hatred!

Bill, don’t know if anyone else told you this on the blog, but a decade is 10 years and does not depend on the year 0. Surprising is the fact that two of your biggest games were against GT since no one on these blogs think they should be on the same field with UGA or the SEC. I’ll also bet that there is a game or two with the Jackets that make the list of Georgia’s worst (or maybe least favorite).

I guess we can not put all the pretense about the SEC being a tough football conference!!. Most of their bowl teams have either lost or have needed overtime to win (Arkansas nearly lost to East Carolina – that’s East Carolina!!; and Auburn nearly lost in OT to NW; LSU couldn’t cut it, neither could S. Carolina; and UT got their butts kicked).

We all know that the SEC has become a two-team conference. One of our teams took care of business by beating the #4 ranked team by four TDs. Bama probably will do the same. Who cares what our mediocre teams do in postseason?

Top two wins for me,1- 2007 UF game, I was there and loved the end zone dance! 2- 2009 Tech game. Saint Simons has shut up! ‘Nuff Said! Comments after watching the Bowls. AU was lucky to win with all their mistakes. Two celebration penalties, numerous false starts and tutnovers. The WarEagleTigers reminded me of the 2009 Dawgs! Speaking of false starts, whats up with that? I have seen more false starts in all the Bowl Games than I ever recall seeing. Are offenses getting too complicated or are there too many audibles being called by the QBs?

Beating florida, any year, is the biggest win for the Dawgs. Fla is easily Ga’s biggest rival. That blowout in 2007 that ruined florida’s season is easily the biggest win of the decade for the Dawgs!!! Mark it down–Ga beats florida in 2010—they’ll be way down and meyer will not be back!!!
