John Chavis (LSU)
Will John Chavis turn out to be Georgia’s next defensive coordinator after all? What about Kirby Smart, still any chance of that? Is Mark Richt really planning on getting his next DC from the NFL ranks?
Depends on which rumor you’re hearing, as the talk about who’ll replace Willie Martinez continues to generate conflicting stories. Are any of them based on real leaks of information out of Butts-Mehre in Athens? Or are they generated by agents looking to get their clients better deals from their current employers, or just sheer speculation? Only Mark Richt and Co. know for sure at this point.
It seemed a couple of days ago as if Chavis, the former Tennessee DC now running the defense for LSU, was off the board, after a Baton Rouge TV station quoted an LSU player as saying Chavis assured him at practice that he wasn’t going anywhere.
But ESPN.com’s Chris Low reports today: “In talking to several people close to the situation, Richt has serious interest in Chavis and is prepared to throw some serious money at the veteran defensive coordinator, who headed up Tennessee’s defense for 14 seasons prior to joining Les Miles’ staff at LSU for this past season.”
Low adds: ” LSU coach Les Miles has acknowledged that he’s aware that Georgia may have an interest in Chavis, whose salary was $450,000 this season. … The word out of Georgia, though, is that the Bulldogs may go to $600,000-plus annually and offer a three-year contract.”
Also, Gannett’s Bayou Bengals Blog reports that as of late Tuesday night, Chavis “had not completely ruled out a lucrative offer to be Georgia’s defensive coordinator after just one season with the Tigers.”
We may find out more later today when Chavis is scheduled to meet the media in Orlando as part of the Capital One Bowl coordinator’s news conference.
Low also notes that Richt has made a pitch to Alabama’s Kirby Smart (everything’s been very quiet on that front lately) and also mentions Todd Grantham of the Dallas Cowboys and Bob Sanders of the Buffalo Bills as “two NFL assistants to keep an eye on.”
The Bayou Bengals Blog noted that while Chavis may well have told LSU linebacker Kelvin Sheppard that he was staying at LSU, things could have changed since then. Richt may have upped his offer.
That is, of course, assuming there’s even been an offer. There’s been no confirmation either way.
Meanwhile, ESPN’s Mark Schlabach said on local radio and in an ESPN online chat: “I think Richt makes one more run at Kirby Smart. If Smart doesn’t take it, I think Dallas Cowboys DL coach Todd Grantham might be the front runner.”
Whether Chavis or Smart would consider a move to UGA is very much the subject of debate among college football observers. An NFL assistant might be more inclined to look on a coordinator’s job in the SEC as a step up.
What do you think? Feel free to offer your own speculation and rumors to the mix. …

Either Smart or Chavis would be good hires. LSU had a very good defense this year and while at Tennessee Chavis always had a very good defense and won a National Title and sent several highly touted players to the NFL. He is a lot more polished than Smart, who I still have questions about because he is coaching Nick Saban’s defense and we all know who the real mind behind that defense is. But Smart is learning from the best and has shown that he can recruit the top players on defense.

There was a real love hate relationship for Chavis while at Tennessee. I think he would be a step or two from willie, but he’s a little old school in his approach, defend rather than attack…….Tennessee fans said they gave up a lot of big plays ( ala Martinez) sitting back defending rather than attacking. I would like for some Vol fans to chime in here this AM to say what you think about Chavis in Red and Black.
I hope a Georgia fan next year has been in a coma for 2 years wakes up in bed during a ball game and hears on the Radio ” man, Chavis has got the Dawgs playing tough D today”. He’s think he was dead. LOL

I think Chavis, like Foster and possibly Smart (though he has remained fairly quiet) is using UGA’s interest (real or not) as a way to get a raise. If I was the AD at LSU, I’d be ticked that a highly compensated DC in the first year of his contract was playing that game. I hate all of this because each time a candidate turns down, or it is perceived they have turned down, the UGA job we look bad. I wish the hire would be made already.

This job search sounds like a Stimulus package now. Plenty of other coaches making money just for being rumored to be interested in the DC job at UGA. I wonder how many other coaches get a raise out of this whole circus. To my knowledge; so far Foster has, Vic K has, Chavis probably will get one now, Smart will definetly get one. Can anybody else name one?

Richt is quiet..Give him that….CMR has been saying since about 2 wks ago that He did not expect the DC search to last much past the 1st week in Jan…….so his target or targets are playing in bowl games or He would have made the hire before now. He knows that to meet UGA expectations–he has to get a really good coordinator and one with proven track record is probably best….He knows that Evans is going to give him the bucks to make a run at the big guys or he would have hired someone by now. He has to hire someone that can work well with him and his philosophy for the program–so assume high moral standards. He must have feelers out there that say his targets are very much interested in talking with him after their bowl games…Would venture to say He probably has a ranked pool of 3 or 4 top candidates and my guess is Bud Foster was at the top of the list…so may have pool now of 3 top candidates….don’t think Koenning met the criteria or He would have been hired..could have been some dialogue there..but no offer….Richt has his eyes on some Big Bucks….and my guess is the he is going to reel one in over the next 10 days.

Here’s the deal. Pollack says Smart WILL interview for the position. Smart has NEVER said he’s NOT coming to Georgia, only that he’s not “pursuing Georgia” and “not looking”. Richt feels like Smart will say yes after the Jan Bowl, but if Smart changes his mind, Richt needs some back up which is why Richt continues to talk with other coaches. A lot of names are going to come up who are not real candidates, like Koenning and Foster, just agents trying to get them more money.
Don’t trust ESPN anti-Georgia biased reporters, these are the same guys reporting Georgia would hire Koenning, and they have anti-journalistically minded reporter Kirk Hierbstreet, the guy who tried to steal the Natl Champ from Richt in 2007. David Pollack is VERY well connected to Georgia, Pollack leaked the story of Martinez staff firing days before it happened, Pollack says Smart will interview, and Pollack says Smart or Van Gorder will get the job. I say no way Richt hires Van Gorder, Richt’s not a 1 year commitment kind of guy.

It may be a better move for Kirby Smart to get away from Saban’s shadow. As long as a DC works for him, most people will give credit to Nick Saban for a good defensive team instead of the actual DC. Will Muschamp may be a good example. Once he went to Auburn, his recognition and stock went up pretty well….enough to get the DC job at Texas pretty quickly and now he will be the HC at one of the most prestigious jobs in the business when Mack Brown retires.

As far as Kirby Smart – please, no more Georgia homers. Georgia has one too many already. Especially after the Richt-Martinez disaster. As far as Chavis – Georgia had the opportunity to get him last year, but it took over 18 months for CMR to “get it”. Mike Bobo needs to spend 8-10 years honing his skills at Valdosta State or East Carolina before being an OC at a place like Georgia. Come on, the offensive game plan for the Independance Bowl was alsolutely horrible.

Bama will sacrifice education for football any day, but UGA can pay Smart more than Bama and not sacrifice education. I think he’ll be the guy, otherwise I think someone would already be named. CMR is sure keeping this close to the vest as are the people he has contacted.
Now my two cents, I don’t like Smart or Chavis as a hire. Here’s why!! Smart is an unknown. Yes he has learned from Saban which is good but how much has he really been given game planning and running the show. Two, with Smart if he comes to UGA and is successful another big time program will pick him up as a head coach. On to Chavis, if Chavis leaves LSU after 1 season why would any of us think he wouldn’t do the same to UGA.
Me, I would prefer one of the up and coming NFL guys or another promising young guy from the college ranks that isn’t on fire like Smart. Of course there are also a lot of college DC’s that are proven who might be willing to remain with a program for a long period of time and have a track record of doing so.

I said it before and I will say it again: College football world has the dumbest people. How hard is it to be a defensive coach? There is only so many options to stop the run or cover. Once in a while you see some creative coaches, you treat them like genius. They are no genius, it’s simply those coaches are mostly dumb. Believe me, if we have an IQ survey, I guarantee you those football people are among the dumbest.
It re-confirmed my view last night when I watch the Miami game. Miami has tons of talents, but the coaches are too dumb to be a little creative or make adjustment. They lost the game.

If somebody …anybody ..can’t get it thru the heads of our defensive players that you HAVE to actually lock up to make a tackle..well you know what i mean…we have only one player who knows how to make a textbook tackle.(Curran) The bowl game was a perfect example of what i’m talking about. It is not a bad thing to have your DC (or OC) get hired to be a head coach in a few years. That means that during that time your team was successful. Also, there is no guarantee that a DC/OC gets promoted when a HC leaves.
I say hire the best person for the job in the HC’s estimation and let him coach. If he gets a HC job, then you find a person to replace him. If you have a good program you can absorb losing a couple of coaches every few years in this manner. Other coaches will want to come to get a chance to promote himself into a HC job.

Dawg Fans, Overall Chavis would be a big upgrade from Willy Martinez, but he still had his setbacks at UT. “3rd and Chavis” became a common theme at times. UT had a bad habit while Chavis was there of giving up 3rd and longs. Also if UT had the lead he had a habit of going very soft on coverage (this problem boiled over during last year’s UCLA loss when after throwing 4 int’s in the first half, UT continually let UCLA’s QB dink and dunk the entire 2nd half and UT ended up losing). But overall he would be a big upgrade over Willy M.

Look, some guys just are not loyal. It’s not in their makeup.
Meyer quits a team every 1-5 years over his 24 year career.
Saban quits every 1-5 years.
These guys are just not made up the same way Richt is with his 90 SEC wins in 9 seasons. Nobody does it better than Richt.

I agree with the Jesse and Paul’s Johnson (did I really just write that!) that the obsession with a big name is stupid. I think Chavis would be a good DC, but not sure how good. Smart seems like the hip hire, but I am in the crowd of “Saban runs that defense”. Smart could very well turn out to be a great coach, but I think it’s a crap shoot.
As for coaches leaving in a few years…it is hard to find a great coach and retain him for a long time. That is the nature of the game. The Bud Fosters and Mickey Andrews of the coaching world are few and far between.
Cycling in new coaches is the norm and Richt needs to be prepared to do this more often.

I am not a Vol fan but I live in East Tennessee. While all the fans were blasting Fulmer and the offensive coaches Chavis wasn’t hardly mentioned. The perception was all Tennessee had going right was the defense. Plus he produced NFL talent like Jerod Mayo and Robert Ayers recently. I still would like to see Kirby Smart first, but if Chavis is the fall back option then that is a pretty good option. My only concern about Chavis is if Fulmer gets another job he will no doubt like to bring Chavis with him.

This blog should not be used to criticize individual players and any entries that do should be wiped off. Bryan Evans is a young man who worked hard as a student athlete at UGA. I thank him for his effort and wish him well in the future. As for “To Bryan Evans” the person who criticized him, did you even go to college? How many SEC collegiate footballs games did you start in? How many tackles did you make for a division 1 football team? How fast do you run the forty? How many interceptions did you make for the bulldogs? Did you earn a diploma while playing varsity football at an SEC school? Did you even graduate from high school? Before you criticize another UGA football player, take a long look in the mirror.

I really believe Willie Martinez was a better defensive coach when Coach Richt was more of the hands on coach. Alot of coordinators are a result of the Head Coach. They are a reflection of him. I think UGA got away from discipline and it hurt the total program. I agree and I guarantee you Coach Saban has his hands on the defense. Of course now with the firing of Coach Leach maybe we need to turn all this over to the mommies and daddies.
Reality Check
December 30th, 2009
1:34 pm
It is nice to throw out names for the DC, but we have no choice but to wait. Other schools in the conference need coordinators but the nature of the beast is that most good candidates are coaching in bowls or NFL regular seasons. It is not common practice to raid these other teams until after the season is over. Lots of names will come out but probably will not in the end be a big time college coordinator from a school where the schools can match UGA salary (Al, LSU, Texas, etc.). I am starting to believe it will be an NFL assistant or smaller name from Middle Tenn type of coordinator.
The majority of Dawg fans wanted a change but this is the downside of firing coaches right after the regular season.

Fulmer is not getting another big job so do not worry about Chavis leaving. Having said that, Chavis is a very good DC. But I do not know if very good is what you want. You have to “match staffs” in other words the reason GA lost games this year was due to poor coaching not talent. Get a staff on par with TN, AL and FL and you will be fine. Bama 1 – I agree anytime a teams’ goal should be the best. We all get caught up in this Naitonal Championship stuff. I think any coach is hired to put a winning product on the field and do it the right way. But I don’t believe you say have to win a NC. I believe you say give me a winner and you will always have a chance at the NC. Georgia was just there a couple of years ago and this silly thing about you had to win your conference came up. I’m glad the NCAA doesn’t require that in their basketball tournament. So don’t tell me Coach Richt hasn’t had UGA in a position to win it all. Sometimes things have to go your way and you get alittle lucky. I don’t care if we don’t win a NC, as long as I feel like when we tee it up in September we have a chance. Would I like to win one you bet, but I will not measure my program by how many we win. Even if Bama wins, I’m still not convinced they are better than TCU or Cincinnati if they win their bowl games.

First of all don’t for a minute think that Kirby Smart coming to the dawgs is a done deal, Bama would have something to say about that if indeed alot of money was thrown his way…CMR will be looking to add someone who wants to be a dawg and can recruit very well along with being a good DC…Coach Garner will probably stay if the right DC is hired, but wouldn’t be surprised if he left when the DC is announced…Coach Garner will probably make a very good DC, but not sure if he wants that responsibility just yet, i just hope we can hang onto him but it may mean he has to have the DC job or as i said feel real comfortable with the new DC and feel he could learn alot from them…I don’t know if Kirby Smart would fit that mold as they have worked together before…There have been alot of names thrown out there, but whoever it is had better be able to recruit the places that they need to and get the big-time players…A great DC is only as good as the players that are around him…I know alot of fine high school and college coaches who were really good when the talent was there but when it wasn’t, did they just forget how to coach, don’t believe so….Our new DC must be able to bond with the players yet have their respect in order to coach them into big time players…

Smart’s a person of faith and integrity, someone that CMR can feel comfortable with, having the same priciples.
He also knows that if he comes to another elite program and makes immediate changes resulting in a NC, his stock will make him an elitist throughout the NCAA and the pros.
Smart’s ambitious and knows that he is in an he controls his destiny right now, it’s time to be get paid.
Most importantly, he knows that this all correlates into a very large payday forthcoming within his young coaching career. Will he bluff or will he throw the cards? Enquiring minds want to know.

UNC held high-scoring Pitt to just 1 TD in their bowl game. If UNC had any offense at all, it would be a top 10 program. Their defense is elite.

“As for “To Bryan Evans” the person who criticized him, did you even go to college? How many SEC collegiate footballs games did you start in? How many tackles did you make for a division 1 football team? ”
I didn’t read the criticisim of Bryan Evans you reference. However, a point of logic:
Suggesting you have to be a Div. 1 football player to criticize Bryan Evans is like saying you have to be a politician to criticize the President. This simply is not logical.
The truth is that anyone who watches enough football can compare and contrast a players performance against what they have observed. It is not that difficult to do. How many people on these blogs pointed out that the UGA defense was trending downward for three years? They argued that WM should be fired because of it. Now I’ve read an interview with MR where he mentioned this very thing. You can bet that few of those on the blog pointing this out ever coached a Div. 1 football team. I bet few of them ever played a down of college football anywhere. But they could spot a trend.
Logic.

I’m sure that CMR will do just fine next year. he always does, year in and out. He is a great coach and has plenty of $ to buy what he needs.
I think taking that job would be a mistake for any top DC. If UGA does great you’re a great find but any thing less than a 12-0 season you would be hung from the nearest pecan tree. Who would want that? Who ever he picks will do fine. I can appreciate the passionate fans who think that their team should win every NC but thats not how things work. UGA has one of the best programs in America and that should be good enough. Florida is better but they don’t win it every year either.
I am a huge Tech fan and enjoy playing UGA every year. I think its way better than playing Vandy or SC. I have never said a cross word about the bulldog football team. They all work their butts off every year win or lose. I would love both teams to be undefeated every year come Thanksgiving. Lots to be thankful for …..We don’t live in Al or TN. (ha ha)….We have a great State Rival and thats the best thing about UGA.

I would be ok with a no name hire at DC as long as he ranked high. worked with van gorder. pollack would be a big addition to staff, I would consider mike leach as OC we do need change there also. Discipline has got to pick up.Chavis is a good consider but Fulmer will be back and by by chavis.Smart could be hc in waiting but he is getting some bear bryant type training. cmr has got to instill toughness in these kids, we get top recruiting classes every year, and there is no excuse for our record.

http://blog.al.com/birmingham-news-sports/2009/12/university_of_alabama_athletes.html
The review identified at least 27 schools where athletes were at least 10 times more likely to benefit from special admission programs than students in the general population. That group includes 2009 Bowl Championship Series teams Oregon, Georgia Tech and Alabama, which is playing Texas for the national title Jan. 7.
What was all that about GT having players who were engineers? Looks like your players are 10x more likely to get “special help”.

Doesn’t really matter if it’s Chavis or Smart – either one will be an upgrade over Willard Martini (even though the latter handed the best the ACC had to offer a 30-24 loss on their home turf).

I don’t think it’s going to be Chavis because he’s doing the same thing that Bud Foster did. He’s salarybaiting. If Alabama wins the NC, like I think they will, Kirby Smart will get a raise to keep him there. Smart isn’t going to make a lateral move to make lesser money. The only other step for Kirby is HC. I think it’s going to be Muschamp, That 5 year extention on Mack Brown’s contract would be enough reason to leave if Muschamp was going to be the “coach in waiting”.

Folks, if Georgia is really serious to contend for the NC, Brian Van Gorden or Smart must be our DC. 800K will land either one and we will have mind peace. Im more toward BVG, the Atlanta Falcons D is pretty impressive considering the lack of talent in the secondary. just focus on those 2

I think Chavis is the man Richt wants. Richt doesn’t want to be doing this again in a year or two because Smart takes a head coaching job. Chavis is a proven coach who doesn’t appear to have ambitions to be a head coach. He will be in Athens long-term. He won’t leave UGA after a year because it appears if he takes the job one of the main reasons would be to be closer to South Carolina where he is from. And of course more money would interest anyone. I hope we land Chavis it would solidify the program, make the defensive recuits happy and allow Richt to concern himself more with the offense (Bobo’s play calling in the bowl game was terrible).

Everyone thinks the defense is the problem. The mistakes this team makes is the problem. The turnovers are a big problem. I dont care how good your defense is if there starting field position is there own 20 there gonna give up points.

I’m not a UGA fan, but my wife is a graduate so I’m curious. Why does the DC hire have to have a tie to the university? Why is this even an issue? Richt never had ties to the university, did he (I can’t think of any, but I could be wrong)? It seems to me that you should chase an up and coming defensive coach that can get the most out of his players. This may sound stupid, but someone like Tim DeRuyter at Air Force sounds like a great fit for a “bigger” school. In the offensive-minded MWC, opponents scored 20+ on AF only 3 times (TCU 20, Utah 23, and BYU 38). Additionally, only 2 OOC teams put 20 on them (Minnesota 20, and Houston 20). And this is with players who have academic and size restrictions. I don’t know…it just seems to me that to limit the search to a “Georgia Guy” is extremely short-sighted. Dooley wasn’t a “Georgia Guy.” Why does the DC need to buy.
This is not really a criticism–I just don’t understand why you want to limit yourself to a Georgia (or SEC) guy. A good coach can coach no matter where he is.

Chavis has proven in more than one place that he is one of the premier DCs in the country. he made tennessee the great defensive football team it is today. he made LSU’s defense the dominant force in the SEC west (with the exception of the Alabama defense). Georgia has just as much talent as tennessee and LSU. so there’s no reason Chavis couldn’t transform the dawgs into a top ten defense like it was when Brian Van Gorder was here. I hope Richt throws as much money at either him or Kirby Smart as possible.

Chuck Amato….It’s because you sucked at NC State. Your linebacking core sucked at FSU and you just got canned by a guy who hasn’t even officially coached his 1st game as a head football coach. Go talk to Tech. They might need something. As for alphare…why not do some math of your own. A little Calc 2 here…if you ran a series progression on how many different ways 11 people can cover 11 people for each play of the ballgame…wow. I’d say it takes someone pretty smart to figure out the best way to do it.
Now my 2 cents. As for the DC. Countless coaches in NCAA football will rumor themselves (or their agents will) to have been approached. If it doesn’t come from the National Championship, it’s coming from the Pros. My guess is that we’ll know if nothing is announced in the next 2 days.

I’m just asking….I went to Air Force. I’m from Athens. I’m glad we one our bowl games this year (both USAFA and UGA). That said…NO! There is no MWC coordinator, head coach, athletic director, PT professional who belongs in the SEC. NOT ONE. Different ballgame here. We saw it with Cincy tonight against Florida, we saw it a few years ago with UGA vs. Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl. No. IT JUST DOESN’T WORK!
I’m fairly certain that the DC hire will not have a UGA tie. That said, we’ll see where they go! Appreciate the try though!

I guess we can forget all the pretense about the SEC being a tough football conference!!. Most of their bowl teams have either lost or have needed overtime to win (Arkansas nearly lost to East Carolina – that’s East Carolina!!; and Auburn nearly lost in OT to NW; LSU couldn’t cut it, neither could S. Carolina; and UT got their butts kicked).

I commented at the on set; Dance w/ the one who “brung you”…also look to MSU’s former Head Coach, he ha dbeen w/ the Pros and with the NFL..all this “would satisfy the fickle fan aka alums and yet bring a loyal man and Coach to the ranks of Richt wanting loyalty and teaching first..and keep the three who were there for the G-GA. Tech game; I belive Crooms woold do that, these coaches kep the defense together and arevthe ones who have been in the trenches all along.. give them there chance too, somebody belived in Richt when he was younger, keep the youth and desire..the talented players will respond to whatever defensive scheme is given to them…the kids, players, know who really cares!!
