Bulldog Nation turns up its nose at Shreveport

(Independence Bowl)

(Independence Bowl)

Admittedly, most UGA fans aren’t too thrilled about the Dogs spending the postseason in Shreveport, but I’m thinking this is probably the least enthused I’ve ever seen the Georgia fan base about a bowl game.

The latest indication is the wince-inducing report in the Athens Banner-Herald that not only does UGA still have about 5,000 unsold tickets to the Independence Bowl, but some of the nearly 6,900 that have been sold so far have gone to Texas A&M fans. The paper reports that after the Aggies sold out their allotment of 12,000 tickets, the school’s athletics Web site encouraged A&M fans to buy tickets at Georgiadogs.com. “Let’s MAROON out the Georgia allotment,” is how they put it.

Tim Cearley, UGA’s director of ticket operations, confirms to the ABH that “a lot of the stuff that we’ve mailed out in the past few days has had Texas mailing addresses on them,” though he makes an attempt to save face by adding: “but we do have a lot of alums out there, too.”

Of course, travel time for Aggies fans to Shreveport is a lot less than for Dogs fans. And it doesn’t help that the game is on the Monday after Christmas; a weekend date probably would be selling a bit better among the UGA faithful.

Still, there’s no denying the malaise in the Bulldog Nation concerning this game. The years when any bowl was considered a reward at season’s end are long gone in these parts. We’ve frankly become spoiled by all those New Year’s Day games Mark Richt’s teams have played in. So any minor bowl would be a disappointment. And the fact that it’s the former “Weedeater Bowl” in the nonexciting location of Shreveport just makes it worse.

There’s no doubt that just about any of the other bowls parceled out to 7-5 SEC teams this year would be selling better among those in red and black. But when you lose to Kentucky at home, this is what you get.

Some have expressed concern that a weak showing of Georgia fans at the game in Shreveport will hurt UGA in future years when it comes to bowl selection. In other words, that it will indicate we don’t “travel” well.

But I wouldn’t worry too much about that. I think bowl officials are savvy enough to know that Georgia fans view the Independence Bowl differently from other bowls. The fact that Florida is having trouble selling out its allotment for the Sugar Bowl looks a lot worse in comparison.

And Dogs fans can take comfort in the fact that at least this game isn’t played on blue turf.

this is the bowl we deserved the way we turned over the ball and how bad we played on defense for more than half the year. One more regular season win and we’d be in tampa. I just hope the dawgs beat the aggies anyway….if it feels like a road game….UGA probably plays better. But if I had the money to go, I would’ve spent the money to go to Shreveport.

If I had the money, I’d go. The economy has a lot to do with it too, Bill. Beside that, we’ve got family coming in this weekend, and we’ll all be around the tube for the game. Let the Aggies enjoy their rare bowl trip. The Dawgs will still pound them like they were Hawaii.

Nice try Bill at trying to make this more exciting than it is. Face it, we had a poor season. Losing to UK at home, getting clobbered by UF and UT, beaten by Okie State, losing to LSU they way we did all add up to Shreveport. At least we beat Tech on national TV. That salvaged an otherwise miserable season. We don’t desreve much better than this. And who wants to spend a bunch of money and time to go see this team play in this game when it is on TV? Not me, especially after all the money I spent on tickets etc. during the regular season. We have talent and I am optimistic about next year as I always am. But the way this team has played no way would I go to this game. And the UGA athletic department should not be surprised.

Agree with Todd- no way is my money going to anything that might benifit the SEC until someone comes along that can get some control over the mess. I hope the SEC loses every game this bowl season and loses their butts on ticket sales also. I hope the SEC looks like a laughingstock after bowl season. That maybe will bring some change to an orgaization that has clearly gotten to big for its own good.

the 2nd half of the UK game sealed this trip.

If you review the season, defense not withstanding, if Aaron Murray had been healthy enough to go through summer workouts and start the season at #1 QB, THIS team could have finished 10-2.Joe Cox blew the UK game and was too sick to play against OSU. The LSU game only required 1 or 2 more plays on offense and we would have won.

florida and UT should have been the only losses and I wonder about UT with Murray instead of cox.

I was in Phoenix year before last when Georgia was pre season #1 and we took over a third of the stadium that was 2,000 miles away, so like any business, when the product is good, the people will come. college football is a tough business. There are no years off. The Georgia team is feeling and seeing that now. It is what it is…….I do think Mark is doing the right things to get us back on track.
Next year could be tough though, a rookie red shirt freshman QB and a depleted defensive front, but the OL and running game and AJ Green give us all hope.

Georgia sucks. UGA and the fan base are made up of spoiled, me first, I’m better than you Fraternity type people. Husbands work and let their 10 year youger wife stay at home and drive suv’s with balck an red color schemes. They treat salespeople friendly but if another UGAer comes into the picture the retailer becomes a house worker. I hope they have to crawl on the knees and learn that they should treat other regular people decent. We not here to serve them. Be kind to people and just because daddy sent you to UGA you are no better than middle class working people.

This is not a surprise. I have gone to every bowl game since 2002 in Nashville against BC, but I will not be going this year. The only thing Shreveport is good for is getting murdered. I even would have gone to Birmingham (an underrated city) though that is considered a “lower ranked” bowl game than Shreveport. The problem is that no one wants to get to the end of the Dawgs game and then be stuck in a s***hole 11 hours from home with nothing to do. Nashville=great city, Memphis=great city, Tampa and Orlando, great cities. Atlanta goes without saying, but SHREVEPORT?!?!? Why do they even have a stadium there?

The reason we didn’t get the Outback bid is because they knew we wouldn’t travel there, either. It’s a disappointing season for a program with high expectations. A&M feels they are on the way up, but they find themselves one game away from a losing season.

Frankly, the Independence and about ten other bowls should not exist. Good grief. Two teams playing that one at 6-6 doesn’t deserve to even be in a bowl and the other at 7-5 that probably should have passed on a bowl.

Meanwhile, Tech has the Orange Bowl, a great bowl, and they can’t sell their tickets.

Congrats Tech fans on having 1 good season since lord knows when. Your team beat UGA by 3 last year and then got crushed by a weak LSU team. This year you won your conference championship against a team that just lost to another weak SEC team, just like you guys. Tech’s program is not at UGA’s level, not even close. We had 1 bad year and we still beat you. Take a look at recruiting. Tech is not in the top 25 based on any source. You may get a good player or two, but not 15-20 like UGA does. No matter how far back you go, UGA still has the better program. This upcoming decade will be no different. We are like Penn St. and you like Pitt. We are like Texas and you are TT. We are OU and you OSU. It’s just plain silly for you guys to even think that you are a formidable program. I would have thought that Tech fans would be really good at logic and critical thinking. oh yeah….30-24, 8-1.

Road, you don’t get to talk trash to fans of the team that just beat you, especially if that team has won 8 of 9 and has a big lead in the overall series.

“We had you where we wanted you but dropped the ball” doesn’t excuse the fact that Tech lost, at home, to one of the sorriest Georgia teams in a decade or more. Besides, catching the ball is a fundamental part of the passing game.

My years at UGA were the initially the 67 Liberty Bowl and we lost to NC State and their loud mouthed Qb Jim Donnan.
We in 68 played in the fine Sugar Bowl and were 8-0-2 and were ranked #4 and played Arkansas
(# 9?) with a fine bunch of big time athletes and even though we were a better team led by Qb Mike Cavan ( who beat out Archie Manning for SEC Soph of the year ) and Jake Scott, Brad Johnson and a totally great UGA team ………we LOST.
We in 69 played Nebraska in the mighty Sun Bowl and LOST to a team that in 70,71 and maybe 72, won the NC. In the Sun, we got blown out like 47-3. We were 5-5-1 that lousy year and this year reminds me of that year.
In the 71 Gator, we defeated a decent NC team like 10-3. We were 10-1 that year.
This dismal bowl record was MY UGA years. 2009? Similar and we nealry belw Vince Dololey out of his cleats with that record but it was not until 75 and 76 did UGA have teams worth talking about.

My point? NCAA football is cyclical folks. Get used to it. No none likes it but that is the way it is.

UGA ought to handle Texas A& M but then, who knows what team will even show up???

Go Dogs.

Tech fans are so funny. They spend an entire year crowing about owning the Dawgs and then promptly lose, making UGA 8-1 against Tech. They got their one win per decade (almost). Now they are crowing about going to the Orange Bowl. Let’s see the last time Tech played in one of the major bowls (for the purpose of this I will count Sugar, Rose, Orange, Cotton and Fiesta) was when? 1966! Let’s see how many of the above UGA has played in since then:

1966 Cotton Bowl
1976 Cotton Bowl
1977 Sugar Bowl
1981 Sugar
1982 Sugar
1983 Sugar
1984 Cotton
2003 Sugar
2006 Sugar
2008 Sugar

All this is due to the fact that UGA failed to be eligible to go to the Outback. Beating a top 10 team on the road to finish the season isn’t nearly as impressive as being tied for the worst record in your division. WAR EAGLE

Bill King, you should work for CNN since you obviously have a Masters Degree in “Spin.” We are in a RECESSION, Shreveport is not affordably reached via air, it is an 8-hour drive from Atlanta from what I understand, and a Nobel Prize for Stupidity should be awarded to the individual(s) who EVER concocted the idea of hosting a college bolw game in Shreveport. Heck, why not have one in Chattanooga? Same difference. If the game were closer, Dawg fans would attend. Period. This will NOT hurt UGA in bowl selections in the future. I also heard (you can confirm) this is the final year of an SEC tie-in to the Independence Bowl. Thank goodness, but too bad because that is where Tennessee would be headed in 2010 (if they can even win 6 games). I would enjoy the laugh since they seem to think they will be “better” in 2010.

Let’s face it gang, beating Tech should not be a big deal for UGA on an average year. We stunk the place up for the most part this year. A bad year happens. I hate the fact that we have to measure the tech game as a good win this year because it normally is a game we are expected to win.

We have the bowl we deserve this year. However, myself and my son will be there pulling for our Dawgs! We will be much better next year. The Nerd Herd knows that and that’s why they are on here running their mouths. I find it hysterical! Knelson, no way Berry returns. See Bradford for a reason why. Berry is predicted to be a top 5 pick (some of that depends on the 5 teams of course). He needs to take the money now. His draft stock will not get higher and the potential risk is too great both in terms of injury and his “stock” dropping. Also, he will never get that money back. I also suspect the talk of a rookie salary cap is going to pick up.

Knelson, you did beat UGA pretty handily this year, but we are not tied for 3rd in the east, and we did beat a top 10 team. So with our 17 starters returning, it should be a great game between the dogs and the hillbillies next year. I just hope that the joke Kiffen doesn’t get us embarassed in the Peach Bowl. I think that the conference lined up all the bowls in terrible match ups for the SEC, and a 3 -7 SeC bowl record would not surprise me.

Just remember 4 players off of UGA 2008 team are starting in the NFL, so UGA did take some hits and your good def coordinator did a great job exploiting that this past October. Georgia played a better schedule than Auburn, Arkansas, and Kentucky. If we had Ball State at home instead of OK State on the road we’d be 8-4 and in the Outback. Schedule down Damon, all of your top rivals do it and are being rewarded. (UT being the exception) Who cares what anyone thinks. Look at Alabama’s non- conference schedule. Rewarded physically and mentally with Chattanooga, North Texas, & Florida Int’l, cream puffs during the middle of AL’s SEC grind. Good VT win but you have to play one good out of conference because your big one is in your division. That being said, Georgia did not have the coaches or the players, for some reason, to compete at the highest levels this year, but did three teams UGA beat this year all with 3-5 Conference records deserve bowl invitations ahead of Georgia? Did they honestly compete at the highest levels? Schedule down Damon to get the wins. That’s the message being sent! Also, play more home games. UGA and Vanderbilt were the only two SEC teams with 6 home games this year. Some teams had 8. Most 7. I know, cry me a river. Happy Holidays to everyone and hope you have a great New Year!

Again, we won’t be able to go this time, but it won’t be because of who we’re playing (I mean…Iowa?…so what if you win? Who’ll care?). The fans that do go won’t be sorry. Now if they just had a reunion of The Louisiana Hayride…and remember, Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler (they’ll show you what it means).

Chuck Uga, you’re an idiot.

thUGa should go to the Outback because they beat Auburn? But they lost to Kentucky and Tennessee.

Tennessee should go? But they lost to Auburn.

Auburn should go? But they lost to Georgia and Kentucky.

Kentucky should go? But they lost to Tennessee.

Stop whining. The Outback Bowl didn’t want your precious thUGa team because of your team’s your fanbase’s attitude this year. The representatives from the Outback Bowl were in Sanford-and-Son Stadium when you’re crowd was abandoning the stands in droves with 4:00 left in the game when you still had a chance to beat Kentucky.

Stop being such bleeding whiners and support your team win, lose, or draw, and maybe bowl committees will be more impressed. I still remember a game in the late 1990’s when AU was beating the crap out of thUGa and your fans were abandoning the stands at half-time and the ESPN announcer, after the camera’s showed the shot of the thUGa herd leaving their team in the lurch, commented “That’s thUGa fans for you… they support their team win or tie.”

Sanford: Lucky for you, no one in Georgia offers those silly majors. If Tech did, we’d surely be ranked far higher, considering our business school WHOOPS uga:

UGA fninshed tied for second in SEC east and fired all the defensive coaches. That tells you where the program is more than anything else. I am glad the rest of you are happy with your mediocrity, we aren’t. We accept smack from the Gators, they have earned it. You asked for specifics. I gave them to you.

I understand Tech has a great business program, however, each school specializes in different areas. Tech’s specialties are Quantitative Analysis, Operations Management, MIS and Supply Chain Management/Logistics. UGA specializes in MIS, Real Estate, LAR, and Accounting. The only common denominator between these top programs is MIS – both schools would be great for that major.

GT Joe, why the name calling? Rednecks? I have had fine dining all over the world thank you very much. I was keeping the conversation civil and not personal. I know I am winning when a person starts making personal attacks. I know which side is winning a college sports argument when someone starts to spout off about academics. Tech is no different than other schools at putting their athletes in the easiest possible majors to keep them eligible. All schools will have some top students who are athletes, but they will have far more who would not make it were it not for the hand holding the athletic dept does.

Tech is a fine academic school. I find it amusing when UGA fans (most of whom probably did not attend a single class) spout off about Tech being a poor school. The missions of UGA and Tech are different. Simple enough. Now let’s keep this about football. No one really cares about academics in a football discussion. But here are some numbers to remember: 30-24, 8-1.

7-5 SEC teams also beat the everloving crap out of Georgia Tech teams coached by the great Paul Johnson.

LSU 38 Georgia Tech 3. Total humiliation on national prime time television. Tech fans were pitching one of their usual hissy fits and throwing things on the field like the trash that they are. Cry babies cry…

Georgia 30 Georgia Tech 24. Georgia punches Tech’s candy azz defense directly in the face to the tune of 300+ rushing yards. The overrated offense, accustomed to steamrolling 1 star prospects at Wake Forest and Duke, didn’t fare much better against a determined Georgia defense. Down by 6 with plenty of time left on the clock and the ball, the great Paul Johnson panics and hurls the ball downfield in desperation, essentially admitting defeat. So much for “playing to win.” What a puzzbag. Afterward, emotionally fragile Tech fans unravel at the seams. Their first knee jerk reaction is to accuse UGA of cheating because their QB misses a whopping two series of play. Then when they realize absolutely no one is buying that line of cowdung, the cowards claim that the game never really even mattered to them. ESPN’s coverage of the game tells a different story. Their shots of Tech fans after every Georgia big play was classic. They looked like they were at a funeral. Maybe, in a sense, they were…

Perhaps Richt now has a complete idea of what happens when he supports losing assistant coaches.

I hope this experience will allow him to grow into the role of Head Coach the way Dooley did (I remember the Dump Dooley signs) and stop being friends with The Players.

This is business – and unsold tickets to a lousey bowl game costs UGA much more than a short term monetary gain. The impact of Richt’s poor decision making ability extends far beyond one bowl game. Recruiting, inability to train talented players, poor gameday playcalling, poor player execution, penalties, etc.

We’ll all see if a real change is in the works based on who comes onboard as DC. I am concerned that Bobo was not released – aren’t you? Richt used to call O Plays for a living. He should go back to doing just that.

I’d bet a decent sum of money that you are in fact a Techie yourself. Tech fans are cowards and always disguise themselves as fans of teams that beat Georgia more than once in a blue moon. Its just pitiful. Anyway, I can’t prove it but you’re probably a Techie.

Some say the climate has a magical effect, others say it’s the water from a local body of water, yet others believe it’s magic is related to the spirit of the La. fans. The funny thing is that before the season started, I predicted that the Dawgs record would be 8-4. I only missed by one game, but the way we got to 7-5 made it seem much worse.

As for the Independence Bowl itself, it just seems so “small-time” compared to what we have gotten accustomed to for our post-season. The stadium itself has the look of a large high school stadium. The whole bowl system needs to be scrapped in favor of a playoff, but that’s a different topic for a different day.

Even the time of the game and the network carrying the game scream “SMALL POTATOES”. The game will be played at 5:00 pm on the Monday after Christmas, which is just another work day to most of us. Further, the ESPN family is televising 24 bowl games this year and only two of them are on ESPN2 – The Independence Bowl and the International Bowl featuring South Florida vs. Northern Illinois!

Things have GOT to get better next year!!!

I’m going to set the record straight. I’m tired of Tech fans bragging about South Beach and Dawg fans boo-hooing about Shreveport.

Now Tech fans can brag about their season all they want to. Your high school wishbone or whatever they want to call it was good but not good enough to beat Miami or UGA and barely got past Wake Forest and Clemson the second time. Having that been said, You cannot win your Bowl game without a run defense. Plain and simple. And if you think your going to beat Iowa, then Tech Fans are more delusional than I thought.

UGA fans are so spoiled because they are not playing on New Year’s day. Get over it. When you’ve had the season you’ve had, where did you expect to play? When the coaching staff doesn’t make the necessary changes until it’s too late, you get what you deserve. The win over Tech was a “Save Face” win, nothing more. And to think that was going to up your chance for a better bowl was also delusional, In my opinion, I don’t think UGA will beat TAMU. Now I’m only going by what I know about UGA and the TAMU – Texas game. TAMU has a mobile QB and mobile QB’s give UGA defense fits. Just saying.

I’m a UGA fan, but more important, a fan of football.

There will be more than the allotment of Dawgs in Shreveport despite all of the good excuses for not going (and there are plenty). Buying tickets through the university will get you the worst seats in the stadium for a premium price. You are better scalping at the game and get better seats below face.

Weather, Monday game, miles to travel, lousy city, bad season for Dawgs….

Dawgs would (as ussual) sell out more than there share for any of the other bowls that were options (B-ham, Memphis, Nashville and especially Tampa).

Once our defense is settled and CPJ gets his players we are going to be a power for a very long time…

Also I have HAD it with the SEC greatness stuff…the SEC is UA, Florida and MAYBE LSU…the rest of the league is FAR inferior…

And yes I know that UGAG beat Tech but its a rival game. My hope for 2010 is that we are both 11-0 and yall are randked 1 and we are 2 and that we go into Sanford Stadium…you know the place that most Dog fans cant find cause they have never been anywhere near Athens…beat yall 63-7…now that would be fun…

all this and people STILL can’t get over a couple of embarrasing losses that happened two months ago.

REALLY!!
