Mark Richt isn't talking about Georgia's coaching search. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)
While off last week, I managed to keep a peripheral eye on the goings-on in Athens concerning the hunt for a new defensive coordinator.
Looks like a bit of a mess.
First came the brief media hubub about Virginia Tech’s Bud Foster, who publicly acknowledged “talking” to UGA before announcing he’d gotten a sweeter deal to stay put. Not surprising; you get a lot of folks using your job search in that way who have no intention of making a move. I’m sure Mark Richt wasn’t at all surprised by that.
Then came the Vic Koenning affair, which was a much muddier picture. Apparently the Kansas State co-defensive coordinator had expressed interest in the UGA job, but Georgia dithered while Illinois made it clear it wanted him. Then at the last minute Richt reportedly made an offer to Koenning but he decided to stick with Illinois.
Whether Koenning was the right choice for the Georgia job or not (and I’m not sure he was), what disturbs some Georgia fans about that scenario was the fact that Richt apparently wasn’t sure whether he wanted Koenning or not and then made a move after it was too late.
Of course, we don’t know the whole story since Richt isn’t talking. Maybe Georgia’s initial hesitation about Koenning had more to do with negotiations with some other candidate than it did with indecisiveness about whether Koenning was the right man for the UGA job. If that was the case, the late offer to Koenning probably means things weren’t going well on the other front.
You expect Richt to be talking to more than one candidate, and a lot of Georgia fans are hoping that Alabama’s Kirby Smart is still in the mix. But the reports of an offer to Koenning, if they’re accurate, would seem to indicate things must not have looked good elsewhere in the search.
We have to keep in mind that media leaks during these searches are often self-serving (a la Foster) and quite frequently much ado about nothing (as in the stories earlier this year about Bobby Knight and the Georgia basketball job).
Still, if what has leaked out is true, it’s bothersome that Richt apparently felt the need to make a late offer to Koenning. It gives the impression of desperation.
How do you feel about what’s transpired so far in the DC search?
Elsewhere, a couple of big woofs are due Mark Fox’s basketball Bulldogs for the weekend win over Illinois. It’s likely to be a loooong season for the undermanned Dogs, but they beat a good team under what was essentially road game conditions at Gwinnett Arena. Hopefully the confidence they gained will pay off down the road in the SEC wars.
Go Dogs!

We need to go get Diaz from MTSU and be done with it. He did more changes during the game last night than anything we have seen in Athens the past 4 years.
His DL was undersized but his safeties and LB’s hit hard and played sound fundamentally. He could do wonders at UGA. not that expensive to get, young and seems to know how to make in game adjustments.

just like always CMR sits on his lazy anus, and the person he wants goes elsewhere, from recruits to coaches.. I love my dogs, but CMR u are not that good to be sitting back and waiting on nothing other than the check to pay the coach UGA needs. I never thaought to say this but your ship is running dry because of your lazy actions and no GA. is not the same team we once were when you arrived.. the program is slipping and so will you out the door.. That might be a great choice as well, for CMR to go, all these other teams with our same situation have filled their openiings and are kicking but on the recruit surface. What are the UGA staff doing, absolutely NOTHING… What a waiste of good players (that i look to change there minds as well).. CMR get it done or get out of town b4 its too late.

Bill – Just so you know…
UGA never even spoke with Koening. They spoke to his agent, briefly who in turn took a simple conversation about meeting with Koening into an “obvious job offer”.
Why would they do this you say? Well because he got $70,000 more dollars from Illinois than he had previously agreed to. This stuff happens all the time…agents scaring athletic directors with half-truths.
Just please Bill don’t be so quick to jump on a story and believe every bit of it when it is from the mouth of an agent…

I don’t think Koenning was offered the job. I tend to think Tim Tucker had it correct when he wrote, “While Georgia discussed its DC job with Koenning, his reported salary with Illinois — $325,000 — would suggest UGA didn’t aggressively target him.”
We need to remember that Florida was turned down by Tyrone Nix and they too still have an opening at DC. No one seems to be panicking in Gainesville. We need to trust the process and trust our head coach.

Stillman, I doubt CMR is “sitting on his anus” and most likely has his man nailed down for the job. I am getting tired of this man getting crucified for one bad year. We lost key players on both sides of the ball and still had a winning record and a bowl game. Teams like LSU and Ole Miss had higher expectations and did not live up to them. I think some people in Dawg Nation set the bar to high this year and there was no way this team could live up to it. CMR will do the right thing at DC and next year we should be a solid team with 2011 having a solid shot at BCS talk again.

koenning said they “spoke”. big deal. this was more than likely koenning’s agent fishing for a higher deal from illinois. there is absolutely no way we offered koenning and he said no to us. his family still lives in the south. he’s going to be making less at illinois than willie made here (and ALL indications are that we’ll be offering a much higher salary to the next dc). and, he’s just not that good of a coordinator. had good numbers at clempson (although not better than willie had here), but was absolutely eaten up any time they played a team with a decent qb. doesn’t sound like much of a change. if cmr was going to offer koenning, he should have just kept willie.

I agree with Chin Ho – CMR may have a DC in line who is coaching a bowl, and will make an announcement after that game is over. But I also like what DawginLex said. DC Diaz did a stellar job handling S. Miss’s offense with numerous adjustments. That was a game I originally thought S. Miss would win, but after looking at MTSU’s schedule and results, I realized what Diaz was getting done through the season. He has only had to deal with mid-major talent, but he may have the skills to inspire UGA’s 3-4 star recruits to overachieve (again). I trust CMR to get it right, and surprise us all. Go Dawgs! Get after the Aggies arses. Finish the drill and count the season a success, all things considering.

If Richt had a clue, he’d offer Ellis Johnson 100K more than Spurrier is paying him at South Carolina and get him to Athens. But this IS Richt, so that ain’t happening. If Richt REALLY wanted to improve his D, he’d have Sylvester Croom in Athens today. But this IS Richt, so that ain’t happening.

It would make a whole lot of sense to not expect a DC announcement until the completion of some of the upcoming bowl games…maybe CMR is talking w/ some DC’s that have some class…they don’t want to hurt their present teams chances in a bowl game by being a distraction…call me crazy, but I’d respect a coach with some respect/loyalty for his present team/players, as opposed to grabbing the brass ring and saying the he11 w/ his old team…there is plenty of time to get this done…as far as recruiting goes, it is doubtful that UGA would be after the same players that the DC previous school will be coming from…as far as the DAWG’s recruiting, they’ll still be getting what’s out there after UF and Bama fills their needs…it’s not like the old days before scholarship were limited, when the top tier programs would sign everything in sight to keep them from other schools (there will be plenty of quality players still available)…so, a player will look at educational opportunities, the program, the coaching, the facilities, the program’s future, future teammates, the school, the social life, the prestige, the conference, the location, the environment in and around Athens, etc….so, taking into account the last two NC’s teams, UGA will be going up against Auburn, Tenn, USC, Miss St, Ole Miss, LSU, Ark, etc…do you fans not think UGA is not at least on level ground w/ Auburn, Tenn, & LSU and the rest can not compete w/ UGA

There is a big difference between general job discussions, job interviews and job offers. Richt is tastefully remaining quiet, there is no benefit calling out coaches or their agents for stretching the truth (lying).
It is almost certain that Richt reached out to Kirby Smart and Bud Foster (Bud Foster’s conversation became public). It doesn’t make sense for Smart to come to UGA to be a D coordinator, one more solid year at Alabamastan and he will be on the short list for head jobs. Bud Foster isn’t the formal-coach-in-waiting at VT, but most people think that there is a wink-wink arrangement there. I never thought either was a realistic possibility.
I am concerned about the way the Koenning thing played out- it makes Richt appear to be desperate and confused. I hope Koennings (and Koennings agent) version of the story isn’t the way it really played out.
I much prefer up-and-coming candidates.

Dick Bumpas (TCU) would be the best hire. So what if Patterson got an extension (contract, not male enhancement). The guy has a rock solid defense, shuts down every team he is supposed to and some he’s not. He has to recruit against Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Ok St, Colorado, LSU, and Arkansas. Pay the guy a pile of cash. I will say this, the UGA coach-recruiting process is TERRIBLE! We get used, show our cards, wind up with egg on our face (Mack Brown), every single time. Hire a high-octane consulting firm to keep everything under wraps until its a done deal. And especially don’t listen to all the wind-bag bloggers (this one included), who don’t know squat but think they do.

Bill:
Like you said, nobody really knows what has happened. The guy saying that you should get a subscription to Rivals is lying. They repeatedly publish things as fact on a whim, just to try to sell subscriptions. They are wrong so much that they lose credibility as much as they get something right.
However, I don’t think Koenning was offered the job. Again, this is just speculation but I will tell you why. Richt has publicly stated that he hasn’t offered anyone the job. Richt doesn’t lie often. Not to recruits, not to his players, and not to the media. Instead of lying, he will sidestep the question if he doesn’t want to share the information publicly. He didn’t. He answered and answered truthfully.
Koenning has been itching to get back to the south since he left Clemson. Zook is in a win-or-your-fired situation at Illinois. They love him up there, but he has underachieved the past couple of years. He saved his job by firing his staff and hiring a new one. Do you really think Koenning would have chose to go to that situation instead of UGA if he had a UGA offer? I don’t. It isn’t about being a man of your word. It is about not being offered the UGA job.
Richt has said that it will be until the first or second week of January until we hear anything. I believe him, his track record says you should as well. The only way we won’t until then is if someone falls into his lap that we weren’t expecting (i.e. Tubberville, Groh, etc.).

With class he will hire the qualified candidate and he will be ready to change the course of the D when he gets here. The top candidates are in the bowl mix, or in the NFL. That is unless he is supposed to hire someone that is out of work. We would all like to know the candidate list, but that is not going to happen. They are not hiring someone to work in the locker room, they are hiring somone to run part of a multi million dollar operation. They will get who they want.

It is a different situation when your defensive coach leaves for a head coaching job or maybe to the pros, but when you fire the staff that sends up red flags all over the country. I wonder if Richt was forced to fire these coaches or did on his own accord. If he was forced, look for Richt to leave on his own accord in the future, as this may be the beginning of some difficult times in the future.

The word in the Rockies is that his agent was contacted by Richt about the LB job. The LB job at UGA would have paid more than the DC job at U of I, but then it would not be a coordinators job. It is said that Foster was contacted for interest or recommendations. If you look at it from that point of view, you can ease your mind and know that this is going to be a good, yet predictable hire for UGA and CMR.

Quite the opposite actually. It wouldn’t surprise me at all to get a guy totally out of left field that hasn’t been mentioned at all.

We should fret. The fact that no one seems to be interested enough to take the job speaks volumes. What it says is that people don’t want the job because they don’t think Richt will survive more than 1 or 2 seasons. Would you make a move if you were worried that the head coach may get fired in 1 or 2 seasons? Believe it or not it is a real possiblility and coaches are factoring it into their long term thinking. Can any of us really think Kirby Smart would come? I’ld go nuts and do flips if he did but it would be a crazy move. The Bammers will match whatever we offer him and why would he leave a program about to win a national title and come here where Richt gets fired possibly in a year or 2?

Let me stop the talk now, I’m not comming to UGA. Its my Alma Mater but I believe the program at UGA is having problems. I’m in a very good situation here at Bama, get along with everybody, and we are moving up. Next few seasons should be great at Bama.We have some prize recruits on the horizon. The fans here are great. You folks must understand, when V. Dooley came to you from Auburn he gave up his loyalty there and became a bulldog. I’ve done the same here. The only reason I would ever leave here would be to accept a head coaching job elsewhere if offered. Good luck to UGA.

Pollock: ‘Outside the Box’ Hire for DC @ UGA
Most great coaches agree coaching starts with understanding people, and the ability to motivate players to reach their greatest potential.
It’s a hunch, and indeed would be an ‘outside the box’ move by Mark Richt. Nevertheless, I believe the best hire for DC @ UGA is in our own backyard. It’s David Pollack, former All American standout at UGA.
He’s young, extremely energetic, very bright, extremely motivated, motivates others, played ‘outside the box’ himself on every play, and would do so as DC.
In addition, he lives on a high moral plane, and would lead with a great example.
He brings the intangibles and instincts that no experience in that position would ever, could ever bring. He would have the fan base behind him overnight.
Not to mention the sensational recruiter he would be.
Richt, go ‘outside the box’. Hire David Pollack. I think he’s Erk Russell with hair, and possibly even more.

Has it occured to anyone that it’s possible Richt only offered Vic Koenning a job as a position coach ?
Once we have a DC, he still has to hire a defensive ends coach. Moving from Kansas State co-defensive coordinator to DC of an SEC team is one HELL of a jump. It’s very possible he was NEVER considered for the DC position at UGA, and so he decided to go ahead and take the DC job at Illinois. It’s also possible that Richt has already come to an agreement with the next DC, and the reason it took him so long to talk to Koenning about any job is he wanted to discuss the move with the new DC first.
And since any and all contact between Richt and Koenning has been more media speculation than anything else. It’s very possible that this is what actually happened.
See I could be a “journalist” too ……

If we’ve never gotten ‘the true story’ about how the Erk Russell ‘non’-hire went down, then I doubt that we’ll ever know what transpired with this guy Koenning – and I care a lot more about Erk than this other guy. Various, long-time, Bulldogs – ones a lot closer to the program than anybody posting here, I’ll bet – are hinting that CMR has his guy and we’ll be pleased. I’m willing to go along with that. What’s the point of agonizing over speculation about who’s playin’ who?
Frankly, I’m more worried that the questioning of Coach Richt will shake his comfort level with being as UGA…the last thing we need is a few ‘hun-yuks’ rousing the rabble and getting him to thinking ‘What’s the point?’ and thus being open of other offers.

Coaching Search, you don’t hire coordinators from programs that are currently preparing for bowls or NFL schedules. I don’t think anyone on this blog has any idea about the candidates. I’d expect to see a coach hired that will bring “60 minutes of hell” to the opposing teams. So far, no candidates have been mentioned, save one that would do that. THere are two sided to this. One is that there is a bowl game in which UGA is playing. Look at the distraction going on right now with no DC on the horizon. Think about the distraction if we had a new staff coming in to run things. As this moves forward, there are a few schools looking for a good coordinator, UF, and UGA for one. ND, and some others. We screamed to free Willy, and now we are not happy becuase we haven’t replaced him when all the good people we want are still coaching end of the year football. Let’s find something else to blog about. How about something like the 4 year record of this team, or the QB for next year. Here is a reall good one, Why did Blair Walsh not make All American?

NO WHITE SMOKE FROM THE CHIMNEY YET
Sports Anchor Crash Nagurski: We go now to the Athletics Offices of University of Georgia Coach Mark Richt. (Camera goes to Buzz Nutman eating a jelly doughnut and drinking coffee. Buzz does not yet know he is on camera.)
Buzz Nutman: Nice tie coach…is that a clip on?
Coach Richt: No…and get your hands off of it…your getting jelly on it.
Crash Nagurski: (speaking into Buzz’s earphone) Buzz…you IDIOT!
Buzz Nutman: Thanks Crash, we’re here with Georgia Bulldogs coach Mark Richt to talk about the state of the Georgia Bulldog football program. Coach there is some concern out there in the BullDawg Nation about who you will choose as your next defensive coordinator. Would you care to enlighten the BullDawg faithful?
Coach Richt: Well Buzz…
Buzz Nutman: Ooooh….that’s a big stack of papers you got there.
(Buzz Nutman spills his coffee all over the papers on Coach Richt’s desk as he tries to get a peek.)
Coach Richt: You…id…you… (Coach Richt snatches away the papers)
Buzz Nutman: Sorry coach.
Coach Richt: That’s….alright…Buzz…. These are resumes…as you can see I have received quite a lot of them from coaches at top football programs throughout the country, …(looks sideways at Buzz who is playing with the 2005 SEC Championship trophy)…and I want all those in the Bulldog Nation to rest assured… I will leave no stone unturned in finding the next man to lead us back to playing Georgia Bulldog defense. (Takes trophy away from Buzz)
Buzz Nutman: That’s great coach…I’m sure those top five or six weren’t viable candidates anyway. They weren’t in alphabetical order were they?
Coach Richt: Yes….by school.
Buzz Nutman: Why don’t we take a call or two from the audience…here’s a fan from Ludowici…goes by the name “Delbert D”.
Delbert D: Coach Richt…I’m a Georgia Tech fan…and I was just wondering if you would be willing to share some of those resumes with Coach Johnson?
Coach Richt: Well, shucks, Delbert …I’m sure Coach Johnson is happy with his defensive coordinatior… but if you know Coach Johnson personally tell him I have a really good friend that could use a job.
Buzz Nutman: Coach…let’s take another call. This one’s from Watergirl Wants To Know…hey, from right here in Athens!
Watergirl Wants To Know: Coach, would you prefer that your next Defensive Coordinator be bald or have a Buzz Cut?
Coach Richt: Well, Honey, I would prefer someone who knows how to run the Tampa 2 and play man to man…but if I had to make a choice I kind of like the old Beatle’s cut.
Buzz Nutman: There you have it Crash….RINGO STARR is the new Defensive Coordinator of the Georgia Bulldogs!!!! And now a word from one of our Sponsors…
Coach Richt: Sonofa…!!! That’s not what I……

Hey Mr. King!
I heard from a very trusting source that UGA is waiting for the LSU bowl game to conclude before hiring the DC. Once the game has concluded then Chavis will agree to come and coach the Dawgs as the DC. This is an impressive move to me by CMR, as John Chavis has reeked havoc on the Dawgs while he reined at UT as their DC. Look at the scores that Chavis’ D held opponents to at LSU this year. The average per game was 16 points! Compare that to Willie Martinez’s D that gave up more than 26 points per game! Chavis’ D only gave up 24 to Bama, 13 to UF and 13 to our own UGA…..Good Job CMR, this DAWG will hunt!

Bill, I don’t think anyone knows enough about the coaching search to have an opinion one way or the other about it. Personally, I don’t see what the big deal is with Richt’s secrecy. Its the post-season. Assistant coaches, good ones at least, are a little busy. If Richt was going to hire some no name Joe Schmoe from East Michigan A&M wouldn’t he have done so already? People just need to be patient.
Whatever happened with Koennig I’m glad he isn’t coming here. His defenses gave up more points in the Big 12 than Tech’s defense gives up rushing yards to a true freshmen running back from a single A high school. He wouldn’t have got it done in the SEC.

Are you saying that C Richt is a liar when he says the job hasn’t been offered? I’d really like to hear you respond to that one.
2. It doesn’t make much sense at all to me that much of anyone would work at IL instead of UGA when they could make more money at UGA. I believe we will pay a top DC more than IL paid that guy. Thanks for the response Bill. It seems to me that Smart would make the lateral move to UGA as DC with the designation of CMR’s successor. Heck, maybe even Muschamp would entertain a truly lateral move (DC and Successor Head Coach) to UGA. UGA could likley offer a lower annual salary coupled to such a designtion. However, I seriously doubt that UGA would entertain making such an offer. UGA will end up with a “rising star” from D2 or D3 school.

You wrote, ” the fact that Richt apparently wasn’t sure whether he wanted Koenning or not and then made a move after it was too late.” You state as fact what is only unsubstantiated rumor. I’d wager that you have nothing to confirm that Richt ever made an offer to Koenning. If you have any sense of decency, you will discontinue your blog. This type of garbage appears in your blog all too often.

I kep telling you guy if you the creates great discipline, uses multiple shemes, and has brought their Defense into the top 10 overall rankings in just 3 years. They play against the high powered Houston offense in the bowl game. If AF shuts them down. Then we will kow he can do a great job here with our talent, but if Houston racks up a ton of yards and points. The I will admit I overatted him as a canadate.

Traditionally, no news of this type is announced until after the hired coach’s bowl game is over for obvious reasons.
I think the decision has already been made and the rest is window dressing. But we will know for sure if the bowl games conclude and two days pass with no announcement.
The Dawgs deserve a winning DC, tough, no BS, smash ‘em in the mouth kinda guy. We have the talent. We just need a winner to organize and execute it.

… and if you want to know why people who hire coaches, and managers, do not report to people who do not hire coaches and managers; ask Frank Wren what it was like last off season, with all of the chaos that was going on with the yes and no from agents of players, that only brought confusion. Frank Wren learned why Hohn Shuerholtz NEVER discusses stuff like this, and he taught everybody that does what he does to keep your yap shut, while you do not know for sure what in the world is going on yourself, as far as final decisions being made by those who are trying to renegotiate their own personal contracts.
Again, I think Mark Richt is in the position he is in because of his ability to make decisions, not because of the lack thereof. Also, the contract with ESPN and the SEC raised the level of competition of every school in the SEC, not just the traditional ones that are usually at the top.

Usually like your stuff, but your post at 10:12 “if Richt did make him a late offer, that bothers me.” is asinine. Take a second to evaluate that statement. That’s no different than saying “if the sky was purple, that bothers me.” Unless you really know for a fact what is going on with this search, then why don’t you step back and let Coach Richt do his job without riling up an already agitated fan base with hearsay and gossip. There is not one bit of “evidence” that Georgia made an offer to Koenning. And I am quite sure that if we wanted this guy, we could have doubled — yes doubled — what he is getting from Illinois. Which makes the rumor that we “offered” him even more unlikely. This is irresponsible journalism. Actually I wouldn’t even want to flatter the author by calling it journalism. It’s tabloid blogging.

One would think that CMR already had a candidate in place before dismissing CWM and his cronies, but the Foster and Koenning “discussions” would seem to indicate otherwise. Plus, as reported, if the salary figure they are offering is $325K, there are only two DC’s in the SEC making less: Kentucky’s Brown and MSU’s Torbush.
If there is a new DC in the bag as some suggest, I think it might be Sal Sunseri, Bama’s Asst. Head Coach / LB Coach.

Richt isn’t getting crucified for one season, he’s getting crucified for the trend of bad football that has been played by his team the last 4 years. Sorry but you don’t lose to Vandy on your homecoming, lose to Kentucky twice, and get blown out by Florida and Tennessee 2 out of the last 3 years, without expecting to hear it from the fans. It’s the same way in any SEC school. But Richt’s biggest transgression is his inability to evaluate talent. He redshirted Knowshon Moreno yet started Danny FREAKIN Ware over him. He started Joe Tereshinski over Stafford over his loyalty to the Seniors. He redshirted and sat Drew Butler the last two years( who just won the Ray Guy award for the best punter in the country) in favor of BRIAN MIMBS?!!!? And he didn’t consistently start Washuan Ealey and Caleb King until the 9th game of the season when they were already 4-4. And I’m sorry, but I refuse to believe that Joe Cox was the best that UGA had to offer. He might be better than Logan Gray, but I’ll almost bet money that he isn’t better than Murray or Mettenburger. Richt’s inability to evaluate talent is a MAJOR problem!

Pay no attention to this “Dawg Trainer” Vowel. He got slammed on the other thread so he slinked to this one. Typical Vowel, knows nothing about college football but has orange crap all over this car and wears orange from head-to-toe, couldn’t find the Univ of TN if he was standing in the middle of “KneelRot” stadium. And as soon as Kiffin finishes his second season 7-5, characters like this one will be yelling “fire Kiffin”. Or maybe just go back to the women’s basketball bandwagon. December 21st, 2009

For what it’s worth…heard from someone with close ties to a high $$$ booster that’s usually in the know…
Kirby Smart has made it known through Bobo that he is more than just interested in the job and apparently Richt, while moving on with his search has agreed not to pull the trigger on anyone until they speak after the national championship game (which explains the 1st or 2nd week of Jan. announcement). Richt remembers what a distraction taking the UGA job prior to the NC game was when he was at FSU and is very respectful of Kirby’s position. Apparently Kirby’s heart is still with UGA, and he also would like to make himself more marketable by proving he’s not having his hand held by Saban (which because of his young age, many believe is the case). Muschamp has also apparently told him he should take a long hard look at the UGA job for that very reason, as many thought the same of him until he left Saban’s shadow.
Todd Grantham has really impressed Richt and if Kirby doesn’t work out then he’s the guy.
They both are 3-4 guys and it’s making it easier to continue recruiting without having one named as they are able to tell kids the next DC will be running a 3-4 style defense, taking away a good bit of the mystery for recruits without knowing who the coach will be. (Would also explain why we haven’t had anyone jump ship as well.)
BTW- Kirby is apparently building a home on Lake Oconee, not that it means anything, but an interesting twist.
Don’t know how accurate any of this is, but it makes as much (if not more)sense as anything else I’ve read or heard.
Go Dawgs!

I don’t put much stock in the Koenning rumors. You have to talk to Bud Foster, but his next job will be as HC somewhere. But there was no need for him to go public with that, except to tell the Hokie supporters “you’re lucky to have me.”
Richt will make a good hire. Not Smart (he’ll also wait for a HC job in the near future). But a good hire. No worries.

The whole premise of this article is a farce. Georgia would not have offered him. This was Koenning’s agent playing for more money….which he got from Illinois (about $40,000 more), then Illinois wanted to pay a DC. Richt did NOT offer him the job period. This is one of those crazy rumors….and I am discusted that Bill you even wrote about it.

CMR has this situation under control, and he’s doing it with class. There is no need to worry b/c no one on this blog gets paid to make the decisions in Athens. Georgia’s got the money to pay a top name for dc and they will let the general public know when they are good and ready be that after the bowl season or sooner.
Hey FLMoonpie get a clue, to call UGA thug u is pretty funny looking at uf’s arrest records lately!
As for the Koening thing, it was just a ploy by his agent to get a little more money out of Ill. most coaches out there want to be in the SEC it is the strongest conf. in the nation, has the best coaches, players, facilities, and is nationally televised every week. Look at any successful coordinator in the conf. they will go a few years as coordinator then its off to be the hc somewhere.

Instead of banning posters who dare to speak out against some of the articles written on the AJC, yellow fuzz posters like “alldawgsgotohell” who do nothing but spam are the ones that should be banned.
I don’t believe for one second that anybody that posts on the blogs with ‘who is coming’ is a true insider. A TRUE insider would have respect for CMR and the program and keep their mouth shut. Furthermore, I don’t believe for a second that CMR has told any little hineys about his plans for that very reason — in other words he knows “Loose lips sink ships”. So dream on with your “inside source” talk. You WISH you knew what was going on.
But all of these distractions before the bowl can’t be good for the team. So keep it up beat writers… just keep negativity going about the DC. I’m sure it’s doing a wonder of good for our team to keep this BS is churning. CMR said he’d make a decision in January. Do you think maybe, just maybe, you could give him that slack and let it go until then?
Instead, how about some discussion about the bowl? Nobody seems to be discussing Texas A&M at all.

There happens to be a number of good defensive coordinator positions available and everyone wants the same guys if they can get them. This is a complex process and most likely will not resolve itself until after the bowl games and National Championship.
The UGA job is a high profile job that will pay well and give a DC the opportunity to recruit top talent. Everyone knows about UGS defensive woos so this next DC could be a hero pretty soon. It may wind up being someone we never heard of. No one had ever heard of BVG when he was hired. Relax… Willie is gone and CMR will get a good one.

Kirby Smart's the Guy
December 21st, 2009

Kirby Smart’s coming to Georgia–no need to fret. Here’s what likely went down.
ABout Bud Foster—Richt put out some calls to seek wise counsel from people he respects like Bud Foster about candidates. That’s about as far as that one went.
The Koenning thing–either Richt wanted Vic for one of the 2 assistant positions (not the Top D Coach), or Vic was really campaigning hard for the top D coach job, to no avail. Pollack says it was the latter, Koenning really wanted to be a part of the defensive coaching staff, but the feelings were NOT mutual. The way Koenning went out by saying he was impressed with Zook’s “character, drive, and enthusiam” said a lot–in other words, he didn’t get any drive or enthusiasm from Richt about hiring him at Georgia because Richt didn’t offer him the d coaching head job, and Zook rah-rahed him with D Coach head job.
Just because ESPN says something is true, doesn’t make it true–these are the same ESPN anti-Georgia guys that took the Natl Champ from Richt in 2007, said LSU deserved to be there over Georgia, and handed it to LSU. Herbstreet for one, should be fired for his biased unprofessional anti-journalistic subjective 1 sided campaigning for LSU in 2007. Lateral moves happen a lot in the SEC—look at Florida, Bama in 2007, and Orgrenon.
If if were anybody besides someone playing in the Natl Champ Jan 7 game, Richt would have already announced it for recruiting purposes. Both D coordinators in the Natl Champ are Georgia guys—Smart and Muschamp. Richt has said he will get a “championship experienced d coach”. Kirby Smart has not said he is NOT coming to Georgia. Pollack’s pretty well connected–and Pollack says Kirby Smith agreed to an interview, the D Coach selected will be a BIG NAME, and Pollack think’s it’s Smart or Van Gorder.

I check the AJC several times each day in hopes of news on this subject. I’m trying to stay positive about it because I understand many of the folks we would be interested in are going to be preparing for bowl games but our search does from the outside at least seem to be a bit of a mess. I’m hoping that perception is wrong. For those of us who would have liked to seen us get BVG, let his name never be mentioned again. He’d rather be a medicre NFL DC than a great college one. Like Tubby, you can’t make people love your school! My next preference is Kirby but I think we’ll be lucky to get him. After that I’m open but Richt needs to understand that he can’t afford to mess this up. He used up an awful lot of good will among Georgia supporters by not parting with WM sooner. If he had done this last year, we possibly could have had Chavis from Tennessee then. He would still be a good addition this year if we can get him. I would think he still has property in the Knoxville area and Athens is certainly closer to Knoxville than Baton Rouge. Those beautiful Smoky Mountains are hard to get out of your blood! Maybe we can use that fact to our advantage.

Why? Read between the lines to what Richt has said consistantly that a coordinator will not be made until after January 7th. Now that tells me his dc choice is coaching in a bowl game or maybe a pro coach. Richt already has his man and it will be announced January 8 or 9th. Wanna bet?

I got no problem with how Coach Richt is handling the coaching search. Richt doesn’t want an early announcement to be a distration for Kirby in the Natl Champ game, even though it would boost Georgia’s recruiting. To make the announcement on Jan 8, right after Kirby just smoked Texas and won the Natl Champ, will be excellent timing for Richt as everybody will be talking about Bama on Jan. 8. Georgia will grab the headlines away from Bama on Jan 8.
P.S. Notice how few of Herbstreet’s Superstar team are georgia guys–talk about Bias…this guy shoud be fired–he simply doesn’t get it–Richt has 80 wins in the SEC toughest conferen ce in 8 seasons–only 7 guys in HISTORY have done that. Herbstreet’s gonna be lookin’s dumb in 2010, 2011, and 2012 as Georgia goes on it’s run. I doubt Richt will be giving Herbstreet any interviews during the Natl Championship years–those will go to other guys. It will so much fun to prove Herbstreet wrong each year, because he will never pick Georgia #1 in 2010, 2011, or 2012.

Hey Wreckmaniac; Nobody, yet, but we sure beat your wimpy tails at that high school stadium, against a high school offense, and more UGA fans there than Tech. Wow what a program you have there. How about that half empty stadium for your so called championship game. Don’t look now but Caleb King just scored again, and yes Tech is now fourth in the academic race in Ga. So you don’t have much really to talk about on a UGA blog now do you loser? Oh yeah We beat you 8 out of 10 this decade so put that in you little rat hat pipe and smoke it.

Hey All dogs, maybe you just hit the submit button twice, or like most Techies, it is not your fault. Like the Tech grad who went for low bid on the oxygen tanks on Apollo 13, or that did the reentry propagation for the Columbia. You guys are a bunch of cry baby whiners and can’t even sell your alottment for tickets for the so called championship game or the Obowl. Pitiful loser, you are pitiful.

You’ve got it fairly accurate. For what it’s worth on this blog (not much)…I am very close to the program. I like to see from time to time what’s being reported and fan’s perception. I thought this article was very misinformative to the public…. and considering most fans and columnists don’t really know, it’s not surprising b/c UGA Ath.Dept isn’t giving very much information to the public, for which I am proud…for these very reasons. Information being leaked can have very negative effects when dealing with sensitve candidates at current job.
In case anyone is wondering how Joe Schad gets his information, he’s in bed with all the sports agents. That’s how the Willie info got leaked early. Anyways……
In short…Here is what happened regarding Vic K:
He lobbied VERY hard to get the job in Athens and was pressing us for an offer. Getting the DC job at UGA was ABSOLUTELY first choice and he made that very clear. (that was reported correctly in the media outlets).
UGA Admin. were not in an immediate position to move forward with him. We decided to remain neutral until we conducted FULL due diligence with other candidates. Considering most of our top candidates were not in a position to negotiate at that point, there was no way to respond to him positively or negatively. He ‘could’ become a serious candidate but just not at that point. Illinois job opened up and then gave him another option to fall back into. Bird in hand for him and also hope for perceived leverage at UGA.
Vic K and Illinois moved forward together and agreed to terms in principal. Before his deadline with moving forward at Illinois (last Friday) there was basically posturing going on between Vic and Illinois (possibly for money out of fear from Illinois to go to GA). As well as posturing going on between Vic and UGA, trying to create a bidding atmosphere and using lllinois job as leverage to get a job offer. UGA NEVER OFFERED VIC K AN OFFER. All it was, was negotiating and jockey play created by him and his agent. That’s it.
Was it possible he could have recieved an offer down the road from UGA if other candidates fell through…possibly. But we never wanted to burn that bridge with him. He came down to needing an immediate decision. I guess you could say we did dangle the carrot for him, but it all came down to him falling on something more concrete with a program more motivated.
Hope this puts some clarity to the whole situation and helps everyone understand what comments Vic K made at the press conference last Friday. Much ado about nothing.

One more thing about Joe Schad. When he reported (tweeted) about Vic K changing his mind…..he really didn’t. Vic was giving UGA one last “chance” to offer him before he committed full bore to Illinois. There was never any flip flop. He just had to settle for his second choice.
CMR played his cards right on this one. I’m ashamed that some of this irresponsible “reporting” going on is being twisted negatively when it should not.

It is a great mystery to me why any one wants a job where the main requirement is that you spend most of your time Kissing the fannies of a bunch of overrated coddled seventeen year old Punks?? Oh yeah a bunch of fifty year old Jocksniffers will put up big bucks to pay you an obscene amount to do it so they can live in their fantasy world.

“Looks like a mess.” ???? Maybe there is some confusion because Coach Richt isn’t telling the media what is going on. Let the man do his job. Do we really think he should make public everything that is going on, what candidates he’s talking to, that he is or is not interested in? Man, I’m glad I don’t have thousands of people trying to look over my shoulder while I do my job.

Yea Charles I am sure if you were running the program you would have fired your defensive staff moment after wrapping up a top 10 finish, SEC title year. Lost all faith in Richt huh? We are going to miss you. Alabama gear is plentyful now.

I guess you got me patsy. Anyone that tires of the rivals and fakers taking over what used to be a decent discussion forum can’t possible be supporting thier team anymore. Certainly not somebody that did so, for decades before these blogs came along.
Speaking of cutting and running, why isn’t 80%the Georgia Blogs just tech fans anymore? I got feed up over a long time, you guys ran away in a matter of a 5 minutes. Something must have happened that one night.

No, if Richt flatly says he didn’t offer Koenning, I’d take him at his word. And I’d be pleased. My point was that the reports that he had made a late offer to Koenning disturbed me. If he didn’t make such an offer, that’s good.

Bill, you did a good job on this story. I also have not seen anywhere where Richt denies offering Koenning the job. Glad you’re not just giving the party-line like georgiadogs.com, thanks for being a good reporter. I agree, if Koenning was offered the job, it’s a bad sign. Richt could clear it up with a simple statement that the job was not offered to either Koenning or Foster. That might help Georgia’s recruiting, from perception, if nothing else. We don’t want a perception out there that Georgia is desperate, as we certainly are not. I tend to think it’s Kirby Smart for a bunch of reasons, time will tell.
P.S. Your last few articles have been a lot of fun to think about–keep up the good work.

Bill, Thanks for the explanation. I would be disturbed as well but that is not what happened so it is all good. We should be giving Richt alot of credit for the way he is handling the DC position search.

It is amazing where our football program has progressed the last few years. Richt has chosen to rely on his Head Assitant’s to coach-which has gotten us no-where. Reminds me of FSU football-where Bowden turned most everything to his assistants, that didn’t work out too well for Bobby the last 5 years or so. As far as the defense goes- I hope I am wrong but it is going to be difficult to replace “Martinez” (did I say that). A “warm cup of beer would be a better coach”. Richt just does not command the “respect” anymore so recruiting a Defensive Coordinator will be a challenge.
Richt has proven he nor his staff can actually coach when they don’t have “star quality” players like Stafford, Moreno, Greene, Pollack and others. Why would a “respectable defensive coordinator” come to Athens. It is going to be “UGLY” in Athens next year. Unless Richt pulls one out of the “proverbial hat” maybe it is time to start thinking about a new “head coach” also.

What we love the most is all these Dog Fans worrying and crying about their tanked program.
This is a sinking ship which is going down fast, very fast with all those dedicated and aimless Dog fans.
This is why the program is a joke:
1. CMR
2. Only 1 concencus national title (1980)
3. They are still living in the Dooley era.
4. They think Erk Russell might rise and come back.
5. They really think Mushcamp will leave a stellar program like UT and return to their tanked program in Athens.
6. Dog fans relentlessly talk about next year and the spring drills.
7. They hire low-quality coaches like Bobo and Martinez which confirms they have no clue about vetting quality coaches.
8. All they talk about is Herschel Walker and Lindsey Scott.
9. Florida continues their domination.
10. They will follow and support those miserable pups no matter how bad they are and never criticize their own progam.
I am confident everyone within D-1 football will agree with this. The UGA program is known as the biggest joke in D-1 and the largest reason major media outlets give it very little support.
ESPN took a chance in 2008 with a College Gameday against Alabama and Georgia got drilled on national television. It was a glorious night!!!

You sir have all of my respect and I consider you a true college/old school dog fan. I recall fans leaving Sanford Stadium during the Dooley era and were cussing a blue streak at him for bonehead calls.
Dog fans need more fans like you.
