Bulldog Bites: UGA ranks 3rd on SEC’s decade list

Amid all the talk about potential defensive coordinators and bowl practices and ticket sales, you might have missed a ranking of the SEC’s football programs for the past decade put together by ESPN.com’s Chris Low.

Low’s ranking is based on a number of categories, including record against SEC competition, record against nationally ranked foes, record in bowl games, and conference and national championships. Not surprisingly, the two teams that have won BCS titles occupy the top two spots: Florida and LSU.

But Georgia finished a strong third, with comparable numbers to second-place LSU in just about every category except national championships. In fact, the Dogs had nine Top 25 finishes to the Tigers’ seven and six Top 10 finishes to LSU’s five (and Florida’s four).

Behind Georgia in descending order: Auburn, Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt.

LAST-MINUTE GIFT IDEAS

dooley's playbook largeIf you’re still looking for a UGA-related gift, you might want to consider one of these Bulldogs books …

“Dooley’s Playbook: The 34 Most Memorable Plays in Georgia Football History” by Vince Dooley (Hill Street Press, $35). In addition to explaining the plays, Dooley diagrams them. And the illustrations by Steve Penley are really nice. This book was first published this time last year but was out of print for most of 2009. It’s in plentiful supply now, though.

“From Herschel to a Hobnail Boot: The Life and Times of Larry Munson” by Larry Munson with Tony Barnhart (Triumph Books, $24.95). The title says it all. A CD of Munson’s 10 greatest calls is included.

“Georgia Football: Yesterday & Today” by Mark Schlabach (West Side Publishing, $24.95). A solid overview of the history of the program, with lots of illustrations.

“For the Love of the Bulldogs: An A-to-Z Primer for Bulldogs Fans of All Ages” by Frederick C. Klein with illustrations by Mark Anderson (Triumph Books, $16.95). From Arch to Knowshon to Zambiasi. Despite what the title says, this large-format volume seems best suited for younger fans.

DIAMOND DOGS UPDATE

UGA baseball coach David Perno  will guest on the “Bulldog Hotline” radio show tonight on the Georgia Bulldog Radio Network. Perno will join host Scott Howard live from 8 to 9 p.m.

Also, the Diamond Dogs are holding a First Pitch Diamond Gala at the Classic Center in Athens on Jan. 16. It will feature an auction, dinner and entertainment honoring the baseball program, including the 20th anniversary of the College World Series national champions as well as Georgia’s other CWS teams. For reservations, tickets or additional information, e-mail diamondgala@gmail.com or call 706-542-8186.

This should provide Bulldog fans a bit of needed perspective. CMR has had the best run of any coach in Bulldog history yet many “fans” criticize him relentlessly and some want him fired. It goes to show how shortsighted these “fans” are. The program needs the adjustment in the defensive staff that is in progress now, but CMR is definitely the man to lead the Bulldogs through the next decade and beyond. He is a winner and a person of character.

Hey Fech – I would say that the “Dawgs” are more obsessed with Georgia Tech than Georgia Tech is obsessed with Georgia. Apparently, beating Tech has defined Georgia’s season. I admit that it would have been nice to beat Georgia this year, but it really was not that important of a game for Tech. Tech still won the ACC Championship, is ranked 9th in the BCS and is playing in the Orange Bowl. However, Georgia is unranked, is going to the Independence Bowl and is generally irrelevent on the national scene.

I still say LSU wasn’t any better than us in the ’00s, just luckier. We split our games with them this decade. We had a 1 and 2 loss season too. We just weren’t in the right place at the right time. So it goes though. Their 2003 team was indeed pretty bad azz. Its a nice little debate, but they’ve got the hardware and we don’t. Don’t get mad cajuns. Just keeping it real.

I would like to invite the Tech fans to start a “Best of the ACC” list. This is the SEC and big boy football. It is not safe for you here. Great new book for YOU TECHIES. “REACHING UP TO TOUCH THE BOTTOM” 45 years of GT football.

So UGA was third with the 2 years of Jim Donnan included. Not too bad, but we need to do better.

Tech is like the blind hog. They find an acorn every now and then. From the looks of the team they field, I have to believe that ACORN had something to do with the recruiting also.

Oh yeah, talk about irrelelvant, Tech will have lower viewing than that of the Independence Bowl. Except in Iowa of course. The word out is that the Obowl wanted to bring in Boise or TCU but that the ACC vetoed it as they were scraed to play another team with a tough defense. You know kind of like UGA’s defense. HA HA HA. Tech is pitiful. It appears that the better teams have found a way to stop the high school rush. Comparing UGA and Tech 2009- There was a comparison between the two teams. It was on the field. I’m not sure if you remember what happened that day, but I’ll be happy to remind you. 30-24.

And to answer your second question, let’s look at some factors:

1. UGA beat Tech’s best team in a decade with their worst team in a decade.
2. UGA had the sense to dismiss their defensive coordinator who wasn’t meeting expectations. Tech still has theirs; and he’s worse than Willie.
3. Tech could possibly lose both their best running back and their best defensive player.
4. History shows that Georgia has the better program.

So whose future is brighter again? The would be Georgia’s. There’s really no comparison.

I would also have to agree with dawgfan that Tech might be the 4th or 5th best team in the ACC’s decade poll which would equal maybe 7th in the SEC.

Try this again. Why care about the last ten years, when this program is going straight to heck in a handbasket, today. I hear Techies bragging about their four or five NC’s all the time. What is the difference? There may be good reason no one is calling back about this DC job. There is good reason for it, and it ain’t the talent. ANOTHER great recruiting class is coming in, so what is going to happen to it? No one wants to board a sinking ship! Seven wins next year is a whole lot more likely than ten. National championships
Years in which the Bulldogs finished with a number-one ranking in at least 3 of the final national polls recognized by the College Football Hall of Fame and included in the official NCAA Football Record Book:[10][29]

1980 – The Bulldogs beat Notre Dame 17–10 in the Sugar Bowl to finish 12-0 and claim the National Championship. Notable contributors during the season included Herschel Walker, Buck Belue and Lindsay Scott (Georgia was listed first by AP, Berryman, FACT, FB News, FW, Helms, National Championship Foundation, NFF, Poling, Sporting News & UPI).
Other years in which the Bulldogs finished with a number-one ranking in at least one of the final national polls and included in the official NCAA Football Record Book:[10][29]

1927 – With a 9-1-0 record, the Bulldogs were called the “dream and wonder team” and were ranked No. 1 in the nation with one regular season game remaining, but were upset by Georgia Tech by a score of 12-0 at Grant Field in Atlanta, Georgia.[30] Nevertheless, at the end of the season, Georgia was ranked number 1 in two polls recognized by the NCAA.[31] The Bulldogs were also listed as number 1 in two other polls of the 1927 season, but most recognize Illinois as the 1927 National Champion.[32]
See also: 1927 Georgia Bulldogs football team
1942 – 11–1 Georgia was chosen as champion by at least half of the recognized polls. Georgia was led by All-Americans Frank Sinkwich and end George Poschner, along with a young back named Charley Trippi. The Bulldogs knocked off 9 consecutive opponents and ranked No. 1 in the nation. Georgia earned a Rose Bowl bid after it blanked Georgia Tech 34–0 in Athens to end the regular season. Georgia then edged UCLA 9-0 in the Rose Bowl
1946 Georgia went 11-0 and beat North Carolina 20-10 and was proclaimed national champions by half the national polls.
1968 Georgia was chosen by one national poll when they went 9-1-2 losing to Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl. Overtime was not allowed in the NCAA yet so Georgia tied with Tennessee and Houston.

Confirms the ESPN anti-Georgia bias again. Objectively, it’s a 3 way tie for 1st place.

To win a Natl Championship, Georgia will need to win the SEC, and go undefeated.

Hey Opinion, the much ballyhooed Athlon rates Tech at 33 rd and UGA as 7th. So it just depends where you get your information. Here is the real deal, UGA owns Ga Tech. In the mid 60’s Tech led the series, now UGA has a 30 win margin. Kind of shows you what has happened in the last 50 years or so. Tech will always trail UGA, and now they even trail in academics. Forbes rated Tech the rth best school in the State of GA, and the 11th best engineering school in the country. That is a far cry from the BS you guys like to spew. By the way, Tech was founded by UGA board members to give the state an engineering school. Looks like these guys did good until you Techies started running the asylum. Maybe this new president from Colorado will help you. It is a shame to see what was once such a fine traditon in academics, and athletics deteriorate over one mans desire to make Tech “the second Notre Dame”.

I’d bet he’s the only coach in Georgia history with a losing record against THREE Gator coaches! 0-1 against Spurrier, 1-2 against the Zooker, and now 1-4 against Urban. Yep, he’s done pretty well against us. But he’s 1-1 against current regime and it ain’t gonna get any easier. CPJ wants to reach the MNC and he’ll have to beat the pups to get there. Suntan’s had 9 tries, still hasn’t reached the MNC. Think that it’ll take CPJ that long? I don’t.

Georgia was Natl Champs in 2007.

Can Richt win a Natl Championship?

December 21st, 2009

Paterno–17th Season at Penn St.
Bowden- 18th year

Osbourne- 22nd year
Spurrier–10th season as a head coach

All I know is if Richt keep on winning 10 games a year, like he went 80 wins in 8 seasons, it will happen one of these years, probably sooner or later.

Tennessee finished the regular season with a 9-3 overall record and a 6-2 record in the SEC Eastern division. They tied with Georgia as champions of the SEC East, however, by virtue of a head-to-head victory over Georgia, the Volunteers were the SEC East representatives in the Championship Game.

I’m personally worried about the bowl game with Texas A&M. I hope the Dawgs come out ready to play. I heard somewhere that the players have to report Christmas Eve. . .that’s rough. Me personally, and i know i’m probably in the minority here, but from a pure football aspect of it, I’d rather be playing Texas A&M than someone like Purdue or Northwestern or whatever. The Independence Bowl is certainly not as well thought of as something like the Peach (VT would be a good opponent actually) but that’s my two cents.

Hope we come out and play well.

Tech fans, it all boils down to money $$$$$$$$$$. Add up all the
bowl take outs for the ACC (Almost Competing Conference) and all
the bowl take ours for the best conference (SEC). Divide each by
the 12 members…..UGA’s share is about twice that of Tech’s. Also
Since you can not stop the Dawgs, you may have our old DC- he
would probably improve your defense and maybe we would only get
about 300 yards rushing!

We will have our up years, mark it down! That’s the nature of this business. You can’t be God and know what players are going to excel at this level. It’s your best educated guess in picking the right players! You also need a lot of breaks to go your way to win a national championship. Go dawgs! Dan,

It could be worse…..other programs like Tennessee and South
Carolina are neither bride NOR bridesmaid during this decade.
They’re flower girls. We at Georgia have accomplished a LOT this
decade and have a lot to be proud of (two SEC championships, #2
national finish, #3 national finish, etc). Even our WORST year (this
one)is likely to end with 8 wins – not great but not bad for your worst
year, and vs the 4th toughest schedule in the nation. We’ll get our
problems solved here shortly and resume beating the teams we’re
supposed to beat, and resume winning the East as we did earlier in
the decade with 3 trips to the SECC game (and two championships) in
4 years. Go Dawgs !

Georgia just completed its best decade of football in history. I hoped you all enjoyed it while it lasted. Richt has reached his pinnacle. It’s obvious the program is digressing. He can’t even get a decent DC interested, so he will have to gamble on an unproven position coach. If the move doesn’t pan out, all the rednecks from Clayton to Bainbridge will call for his head, and Georgia will suffer another lost decade like the Goff/Donnan era.

Heck even their best was only third best in the conference. Just goes to show how irrelevant Georgia football is.

Nebraksa and Oklahoma both got invited to the Natl Champ game, even though they BOTH lost their conference game that yeear.

Ok in 2003 lost their conference, but got inivited to the Natl Champ.

Georgia should have had a shot in 2007, you just can’t play favorites like that. Georgia in 2007 was CLEARLY the hottest team in the country, but because of the ESPN Heirbstreet bias, was not invited to the Natl Champ.

Doesn’t matter, Georgia was Natl Champs in 2007.

Richt #1 Coach in SEC in Decade--chris Low is Biased and Wrong

December 22nd, 2009
12:30 pm

First of all, neither Meyer or Miles has been there for the decade. Both Florida and LSU had multiple Head Coaches during the deacade==Chris Low forgot to mention that. They both have yet to demonstrate they can win 80 games in 8 seasons. Richt did that–something only 7 coaches in NCAA history have been able to do. Both LSU and Florida played 1 more game than Georgia, 129 games, as opposed to Georgia’s 128 games. Richt was NOT the coach in 2000–the losses can not be attributed to him.

Even by Low’s NUmbers, Georgia was #1 in:
-Top 25 finishes
-Top 10 finishes
-Bowl game record

Just shows the ESPN anti-Georgia bias again.

80 SEC wins in 8 seasons

December 22nd, 2009
12:43 pm

How a coach can do something that’s only been done 7 times in NCAA History, win 80 games in 8 season, and do it in the SEC toughest conference, and never get invited to play for the Natl Camp, is amazing.

Shows the human bias in the polls. Richt is not just better than Meyer or Miles or Saban, only 7 people in the history of the NCAA have accomplished what he has done, yet no Natl Champ invites. a 13-1 season, a #3 ranking in 2007 when #1 and #2 lose their games before the Natl Champ. The bias is glaring.

Georgia will have to win the SEC, dominate every game by 20-30 points, to get invited to a Natl Champ. Ultimately, Georgia has no control over if they get invited to the Natl Championship, Georgia can only control whether Georgia wins the SEC or not, and the win/loss record.
