Bulldog Bites: UGA ranks 3rd on SEC’s decade list

Amid all the talk about potential defensive coordinators and bowl practices and ticket sales, you might have missed a ranking of the SEC’s football programs for the past decade put together by ESPN.com’s Chris Low.

Low’s ranking is based on a number of categories, including record against SEC competition, record against nationally ranked foes, record in bowl games, and conference and national championships. Not surprisingly, the two teams that have won BCS titles occupy the top two spots: Florida and LSU.

But Georgia finished a strong third, with comparable numbers to second-place LSU in just about every category except national championships. In fact, the Dogs had nine Top 25 finishes to the Tigers’ seven and six Top 10 finishes to LSU’s five (and Florida’s four).

Behind Georgia in descending order: Auburn, Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt.

LAST-MINUTE GIFT IDEAS

dooley's playbook largeIf you’re still looking for a UGA-related gift, you might want to consider one of these Bulldogs books …

“Dooley’s Playbook: The 34 Most Memorable Plays in Georgia Football History” by Vince Dooley (Hill Street Press, $35). In addition to explaining the plays, Dooley diagrams them. And the illustrations by Steve Penley are really nice. This book was first published this time last year but was out of print for most of 2009. It’s in plentiful supply now, though.

“From Herschel to a Hobnail Boot: The Life and Times of Larry Munson” by Larry Munson with Tony Barnhart (Triumph Books, $24.95). The title says it all. A CD of Munson’s 10 greatest calls is included.

“Georgia Football: Yesterday & Today” by Mark Schlabach (West Side Publishing, $24.95). A solid overview of the history of the program, with lots of illustrations.

“For the Love of the Bulldogs: An A-to-Z Primer for Bulldogs Fans of All Ages” by Frederick C. Klein with illustrations by Mark Anderson (Triumph Books, $16.95). From Arch to Knowshon to Zambiasi. Despite what the title says, this large-format volume seems best suited for younger fans.

DIAMOND DOGS UPDATE

UGA baseball coach David Perno  will guest on the “Bulldog Hotline” radio show tonight on the Georgia Bulldog Radio Network. Perno will join host Scott Howard live from 8 to 9 p.m.

Also, the Diamond Dogs are holding a First Pitch Diamond Gala at the Classic Center in Athens on Jan. 16. It will feature an auction, dinner and entertainment honoring the baseball program, including the 20th anniversary of the College World Series national champions as well as Georgia’s other CWS teams. For reservations, tickets or additional information, e-mail diamondgala@gmail.com or call 706-542-8186.

Fran Wren,

Come on, you can do better than that. Auburn’s all time record against the Dawgs is 53–51–8, while BAMA’s is 36-25-4. Alabama still owns this great state of Georgia.

No suprise–looks like a 3 way tie, Georgia is right there in losses at 31 with Fla and LSU, good top 10 finishes, etc.

Georgia won the Natl Championship in 2007, even though ESPN and Kirk Heirbstreet says LSU did.

Confirms the ESPN anti-Georgia bias again. Objectively, it’s a 3 way tie for 1st place.

To win a Natl Championship, Georgia will need to win the SEC, and go undefeated.

Richt is one fo only 7 coache sin history to win 80 games in 8 seasons. To try and call him 3rd is ridicululous.

Hey Opinion, the much ballyhooed Athlon rates Tech at 33 rd and UGA as 7th. So it just depends where you get your information. Here is the real deal, UGA owns Ga Tech. In the mid 60’s Tech led the series, now UGA has a 30 win margin. Kind of shows you what has happened in the last 50 years or so. Tech will always trail UGA, and now they even trail in academics. Forbes rated Tech the rth best school in the State of GA, and the 11th best engineering school in the country. That is a far cry from the BS you guys like to spew. By the way, Tech was founded by UGA board members to give the state an engineering school. Looks like these guys did good until you Techies started running the asylum. Maybe this new president from Colorado will help you. It is a shame to see what was once such a fine traditon in academics, and athletics deteriorate over one mans desire to make Tech “the second Notre Dame”.

Its hilarious that fans of Mutley U. always talk about the wonnnnnnderful accomplishments of Coach Suntan, but they never make him accountable for his miserable record against UF. I’d bet he’s the only coach in Georgia history with a losing record against THREE Gator coaches! 0-1 against Spurrier, 1-2 against the Zooker, and now 1-4 against Urban. Yep, he’s done pretty well against us. But he’s 1-1 against current regime and it ain’t gonna get any easier. CPJ wants to reach the MNC and he’ll have to beat the pups to get there. Suntan’s had 9 tries, still hasn’t reached the MNC. Think that it’ll take CPJ that long? I don’t.

K-Town Dawg

But to reach the MNC game from the ACC, GT would need to go undefeated.
I don’t see that happening. Tech had it’s best chance this year with FSU, Miami, and VT down.
AND they played their toughest rivals at home.

CPJ couldn’t get it done. Back to the middle of the pack next year Techies.
Enjoy the OB, because it will be another 40+ years before you see it again!

The problem is, you don’t have to win your conference to get into the Natl Champship game.

Nebraska in 2001, Oklahoma 2003, neither won their conference, but both won a Natl Championship.

Georgia was Natl Champs in 2007.

Can Richt win a Natl Championship?

December 21st, 2009
8:01 pm

Consider how long it took other coaches to get their 1st Natl Championship:
Paterno–17th Season at Penn St.
Bowden- 18th year
Dooley- 17th year
Osbourne- 22nd year
Spurrier–10th season as a head coach

All I know is if Richt keep on winning 10 games a year, like he went 80 wins in 8 seasons, it will happen one of these years, probably sooner or later.

Navy defense under Johnson in 2007 ( 36 points and 439 yards allowed per game average) ” I didn’t bring any of those players with me ” Johnson quote upon becoming the Tech coach . You have got to be kidding, oh you are another Dawg in denial. Here is a history lesson ESPN had nothing to do with :

2007 : Tennessee 35 Georgia 14
Tennessee finished the regular season with a 9-3 overall record and a 6-2 record in the SEC Eastern division. They tied with Georgia as champions of the SEC East, however, by virtue of a head-to-head victory over Georgia, the Volunteers were the SEC East representatives in the Championship Game.

I’m personally worried about the bowl game with Texas A&M. I hope the Dawgs come out ready to play. I heard somewhere that the players have to report Christmas Eve. . .that’s rough. Me personally, and i know i’m probably in the minority here, but from a pure football aspect of it, I’d rather be playing Texas A&M than someone like Purdue or Northwestern or whatever. The Independence Bowl is certainly not as well thought of as something like the Peach (VT would be a good opponent actually) but that’s my two cents.

Hope we come out and play well.

Tech fans, it all boils down to money $$$$$$$$$$. Add up all the
bowl take outs for the ACC (Almost Competing Conference) and all
the bowl take ours for the best conference (SEC). Divide each by
the 12 members…..UGA’s share is about twice that of Tech’s. Also
Since you can not stop the Dawgs, you may have our old DC- he
would probably improve your defense and maybe we would only get
about 300 yards rushing!
