Rex Robinson: Players in control in Athens?

Was Mark Richt's choice of uniforms against Florida a symptom of a bigger problem? (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Was Mark Richt's choice of uniforms against Florida a symptom of a bigger problem? (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Rex Robinson isn’t sure a new defensive coordinator will cure what ails Mark Richt’s program.

He blogs that “There have been ever increasing signs that the inmates were running the asylum at UGA. For three years the intermittent collapses on offense, defense or as a team left many Dawg fans scratching their heads. … Now it comes out that the strife on this team has reached new levels. I’m not going to go into specifics on here, but suffice it to say, it’s much worse than we imagined.”

While he doesn’t provide any specifics, Robinson cites Richt’s decision to go with the black helmets and pants against Florida as a case of him catering to the players to try and get them to perform. “It’s not the actual helmets and pants, or even black jerseys,” Robinson says. “It’s what they represent. The players are in control.”

He goes on to bring up again recurring questions about the effectiveness of Georgia’s strength and conditioning program and concludes: “Only time will tell if the changes being made right now are nothing more than a band-aid on the problem or if only a hand-grenade will do the trick.”

Wow. Rex certainly isn’t the only one to complain about the general lack of discipline on the field shown by the Dogs, as evidenced by the chronic problem with penalties and turnovers. But because of his status as a former player his disenchantment with the general direction of Richt’s program is noteworthy.

What do you think? Has the kicking legend put his finger on the true problem with the Dogs, or is he just another grumpy ole guy out of touch with the way the game is played nowadays?

I don’t know if I agree with Rex about the jerseys, but as the ole saying goes ” where there is smoke there is fire”. There is definately a lack of direction with this program. I remember when Tuberville let Al Borges go prior to the 2008 season, I said to myself ” Tuberville is done”. I said the same thing when Fulmer hired a new OC in 2008. UGA is experiencing a culture problem right now and it’s bad! Getting rid assistant coaches usually leads to Head Coach’s being let go down the line. If UGA goes 6-6 or 5-7 next year, we’ll know that the problems are bigger than the defensive staff. Mark my words, if UGA goes 6-6 or 5-7 next year I think Richt will resign.

Irresponsible of King to print this garbage. Irresponsible of Robinson to post it on his blog (unless he is anti-Georgia, which I doubt). Both are persona non grata in Bulldog Nation as far as I am concerned. Richt has seen the problems and he is making the changes he believes are needed. Shut up and see if he is making the right ones. At this point, whining and belly aching in public does not help anybody interested in Georgia’s success. I think Robinson is interested in Georgia’s success, but probably did not anticipate his blog being quoted in AJC. He should have, given the storied credentials of its “sports writers.” King is very obviously not interested in Georgia’s best interests, as he has repeatedly shown. Just another gossip mongering windbag trying to get everyone to “look at me, look at me!” King, on behalf of Bulldog Nation, you’re fired! You do not “offer the fan’s perspective,” as you claim in your blog.

This is ABSOLUTELY correct. Toughness comes from the top down and Richt was a booth sitter at FSU and a backup quarterback at Miami. He lacks the leadership and toughness needed to compete for championships which is why he needs a great staff around him.

Rumor has it that we might hire Mark Stoops as DC.

Richt-Bobo-MARK Stoops…

This is where CMR makes it or breaks it. My theory is CMR has not been exacting enough with his coaches. I don’t think the black gear is relevant- CMR is the man behind the color (think “Back in Black”). He just likes the way black looks- and the image it projects- at least as much as the players themselves and some of the UGA fans do. I happen to love the black jerseys with the red G helmets myself. What is relevant is CRM now is taking corrective steps and IF he gets the defense to perform next year (e.g., start getting more takeaways) and thereafter, CMR will prove he’s the guy we all thought he was. The buck after all stops with CMR, not the DC he hires. If the D doesn’t come up to SEC standards next year, we’ve got a problem.

So…with all I have read here, it looks like all of the success that UGA has had since CMR was hired was smoke and mirrors? Just two seasons ago, we were in the Sugar Bowl KILLING Hawaii and finished #2. Is UGA not allowed to have bad years? Is a bad year (’a’ bad year – we won 10 games in 2008 – thats good regardless of the Tech loss) enough to say that we “lack direction” and CMR will ultimately go? Coach Richt knocked the lid off of our program. History has shown that FSU has not been the same since he left. We are recruiting well, and I think Richt has the moral fiber to get it done right. I think some people are losing faith all too easily. Dooley had plenty of bad years, as did Bear Bryant, Joe Paterno, etc. etc. Get with the Dawgs, or get going. Coach Richt has earned our trust…lets extend it. 30-24!

Tired of hearing takes like this with no first hand knowledge. Also, don’t like the inferences to the players being ‘inmates running the asylum” bit. Its old and tired but more importantly unfounded. Its speculation, a guess, an observation only so unless Rex or anyone else on here can go to every practice, be in the lockerroom at all times and participate in team meetings and coaches meetings and see/hear this stuff first hand….then Shut It!

The perception is that because Rex is an ex-UGA football player that the impact of the comments he made is supposed to be perceived as “legit” or “insider.” Why? A guy 30 yrs removed from football who hasn’t even been on the radar screen until recent months is suddenly knowledgeable of our program? Get real guys. Now if this had come from someone like Pollack then I would sit up and take it seriously. But Rex Robinson? A has-been kicker from the 70s? Come on…

These are the kind of side-street distractions that do nothing but tear down the program. First you have RR making the blog spewing unsubstantiated remarks and then you have Bill repeating it for a larger audience. All it does is provide fertile ground for our rivals to trash us and just billboards an image of weakness. Guys, either get behind the program or change your colors officially.

I guarantee within the next few days either MB or JS or both with trash UGA using this same RR garbage. Thanks Rex…

So the AJC is using gossip as a source to publish as a recruiting article. That is sad. He said she said they said. That is pathetic. Post legit articles. This is the crap that has CNN with low ratings. With all that said, we still beat GT in Atlanta. What does that say about GT’s program? All the negative crap is not hurting our recruiting nor is it hurting our great program. Your anti-UGA approach is a bit silly. Go DAWGS.

Those new uniforms are a Nike promo. They were provide free to the 5 schools that participated.

“With the Pro Combat gear, this moisture is shed off the material, making it 46 percent lighter than a typical Gator uniform when wet, according to Nike.

In addition to wicking away moisture, the four-way stretch twill that is used in the jersey and pants effectively “shrink wraps” itself around a player’s body, said Nike spokesperson Loren Hoppes. This allows for the uniform to contort to every angle in which pad and flesh meet, preventing opposing players from grabbing onto a Gator’s jersey.”

“Three of the four teams that have worn the new uniforms have won by an average of 17 points (TCU, Virginia Tech, FSU and Ohio State). Only injury-plagued Oklahoma has lost.”

II agree that this article is silly. It does nothing but perpertuate a perception of problems at UGA, and while Bill King may be a Dawg fan…his little article here does nothing to help the program. If the parents of a recruit read this, it could damage UGA’s efforts in recruuiting. I think this is more damaging that constructive, and in actuality, who gives a rip what a 30-year removed Bulldog thinks anyway???

Bill,
Way to go again trashing UGA. Anything to get lots of comments on your blog. Keep poking till you can find someone with an opinion that will cause controversy. Nothing is ever good enough to please you when it comes to UGA. Anything you can print to undermine the team you seem to jump at the opportunity. You call yourself a Dawg fan? You couldn’t do more to hurt the team. Lots of teams change helment or uniform colors for a little boost for a special game. If you knew the first thing about football you would know that. UFs white helments was yet another sign of discipline problems? You drive away readers that are UGA fans and then cannot understand why the AJC is going broke. Just so you get lots of comments you probably could care less.

I agree, the players generation is one of the first to be raised in the “everybody’s a winner” and “can’t keep score” culture. They are the ones coming out of college expecting the highest pay and the corner office. It is the entitlement generation and they are taught from a young age to be in charge.

Funny, you’d think such kids could be leaders. But they can’t. There are just too many cheifs and not enough indians. They are taught not to follow, so no one does.

I know this sounds harsh…it is not meant to be. I too work with youth and my style had always been laid back…give’em a bit of room to express themselves…and what I’ve learned is that with this generation that will get you in trouble as a leader. Through strength of will and steadiness of purpose, you have to exert your dominance over these guys. If you don’t…you will look like Richt.

I don’t think that being a kicker once upon of time really gives him enough insight or physical access to substantiate the rumors he is generating. Certainly, trying to give your team a little edge by going with a different colored uniform may be silly, but it is pretty flimsy evidence for Robinson’s charge.
Beyond that this is pretty much a non-article. I guess there isn’t anything else to talk about. Maybe he is just trying to help psyche out the Aggies seeing as how UGA has no defensive coaches and all.

Ol’ Buck and I were riding a horse through Athen’s and some guy said look at the two arseholes on that horse, so we got off to take a look, but the horse ran away! On our walk back to the barn, Buck filled me in on the players being in control. BTW, that guy lied, because when we got back to the barn, I lifted the tail and it only had one arsehole!
