Rex Robinson: Players in control in Athens?

Was Mark Richt's choice of uniforms against Florida a symptom of a bigger problem? (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Was Mark Richt's choice of uniforms against Florida a symptom of a bigger problem? (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Rex Robinson isn’t sure a new defensive coordinator will cure what ails Mark Richt’s program.

He blogs that “There have been ever increasing signs that the inmates were running the asylum at UGA. For three years the intermittent collapses on offense, defense or as a team left many Dawg fans scratching their heads. … Now it comes out that the strife on this team has reached new levels. I’m not going to go into specifics on here, but suffice it to say, it’s much worse than we imagined.”

While he doesn’t provide any specifics, Robinson cites Richt’s decision to go with the black helmets and pants against Florida as a case of him catering to the players to try and get them to perform. “It’s not the actual helmets and pants, or even black jerseys,” Robinson says. “It’s what they represent. The players are in control.”

He goes on to bring up again recurring questions about the effectiveness of Georgia’s strength and conditioning program and concludes: “Only time will tell if the changes being made right now are nothing more than a band-aid on the problem or if only a hand-grenade will do the trick.”

Wow. Rex certainly isn’t the only one to complain about the general lack of discipline on the field shown by the Dogs, as evidenced by the chronic problem with penalties and turnovers. But because of his status as a former player his disenchantment with the general direction of Richt’s program is noteworthy.

What do you think? Has the kicking legend put his finger on the true problem with the Dogs, or is he just another grumpy ole guy out of touch with the way the game is played nowadays?

When are Georgia fans finally going to admit CMR is the problem? He needs to do less praying and more discipline. The turnovers and penalties are directly caused by lack of discipline. There’s no gray area here. The Bulldogs are destined to be a mediocre 7-5 team for the next decade.

Looks like the fanbase needs the same kind of vetting and culling that the football roster does. HELLO, what part of 7-5 ain’t acceptable don’t you Disney pablum puking sissified dawg handles in name ONLY don’t you get? 111th in PENALTIES! 119th in TURNOVERS?

What happened to the 0500 Club for penalty makers and fumblers? WHY are our guys being pushed around? EVER?

A new DC is not the most acute need for our program. Richt best fix this immediately as he now is walking in the same steps as JD did when he let the kids run the program.

Rex has been right more often than any of the others. Does anyone remember when he was the only one taking up for our kickers. And he is right this time. We need a no nonsense coach. These “kids” as many of you refer to them are not kids but young Adults and should act like men.

Bill,

Rex may be a former player, but in terms of being “in the know” in regards to the program, he knows no more than you or I do. However I have noticed a trend with him, and it seems blatantly obvious to me that he does not like coach Richt, for whatever reason, and has taken every opportunity available to take pot shots at Richt. This latest article by him not only reeks of bitterness, but lacks any semblance of proof or evidence to back up his ludicrous claims.

The sooner sports media stops treating Rex Robinson like an insider, the better. He’s just another blogger, and not a very good one at that. If anything, he should be categorized with the “lunatic fringe” that loses it’s mind when things are going bad.

Wow, Rex has really gone too far now. I am very disappointed that a respected Bulldog alum would talk trash about the program. These accusations are wild. And I don’t think Rex has any more specific information than what he has stated. Why hide the specifics if you’ve already called out the coach and the program?

He is crazy. Richt has been attacked for every single thing he does. The man can never do anything right in some people’s eyes. Richt runs the program, I did not hear players calling for the firing of CWM. Sure the seniors have an input in some stuff but to say that they run the program is crazy. I don’t see them out on recruiting visits, making pitches on why they should come to UGA, or even calling the plays. It is amazing how many people will criticize someone when they have 1 bad year. Did we forget all Richt has done for us? Remember the 90’s? And How many years had it been since UGA won an SEC championship before Richt won it in 2002 and how many BCS bowl games had we been to before the Richt era? Clearly Mr. Robinson is crazy and needs to shut up before he says something else stupid. This program is on the up swing and I can’t wait for that man to eat his words. So in a nice way Mr. Robinson SHUT UP!!!!!!!

The fact that you throw the program under the bus and air your opinion of our dirty laundry in indicitave of the fact that you care more about promoting yourself than you do the well-being of the program. Sanford Drive,
You are absolutely right. The head coaches at many programs have let the players wear alternate uniforms this year. This is almost always something that the PLAYERS (especially the seniors) request. Have all of those coaches lost control of their programs?
Remember when Florida wore alternate jerseys against the Dawgs in 2005? Florida won the game, and I don’t think Coach Meyer lost control of his team.

The biggest problem with georgia is our strenght and conditioning.Ive got a freind whose kid was recruited by georgia they walked him through the weight room and they said there was no accountibility. The players just kind mulled around cutting up with no supervision. At 3 other schools in the SEC the experince was totally different. It was to repeat what he said alot more organized.

I almost lost my lunch when Why Isn’t Bobo Fired astually said that Defensive Coordinators bait Bobo into quick scores at the end of games, so they can get the ball back. All of which is based on his premise that Bobo get’s nervous when the game is on the line. That is absolutely the most RETARDED comment I’ve ever seen on this board. Hello, how many times did Stafford over his career take the ball from inside our 10 yard line and drive us to a winning score?

Regarding Rex Robinson… I don’t put a lot of stock in what he says, because he didn’t provide specifics and didn’t tell us anything we don’t already know. I’ve played enough organized sports to know that some atheletes do not get along with certain coaches. It’s life!

I also find it remarkable that some people are now coming out of the closet and defending Willie Martinez. Those are the same people who a month ago wanted him axed. News flash people, Richt did the right thing. Martinez’s defensive philosophy of bend but don’t break, doesn’t get it done in the SEC, as evidenced by the number of points our opponents were scoring on us.

This may be the most asinine thing I have ever read on here and that is saying a lot. “Bobo has a “pass-the-buck” mentality–he doesn’t want the responsibility of having the ball in his hands the last few seconds. Defenses bait Bobo into a quick score, and he takes the bait, giving them the ball back on the final possession. The LSU game was a great example, as was the Kentucky game, in both games, Bobo tried to leave the win/loss responsibility on his DC. He threw Willie under the bus. Tell me a game in 2009 where Bobo’s offense won it on the last possession?”

Are you serious? So Bobo should be fired because you are not happy with the number of games Georgia won on the last possession with the offense on the field in 2009? I guess you just want to ignore that Bobo’s offense was one of the best in scoring against SEC opponents in 2009. I admit Bobo has had some strange play calls through out his tenure but your rational that he throws the D under the bus by not scoring on the last play of the game to win is crazy.

I must admit I am questioning CMR also. He promotes Martinez based on friendship (the secondary was UGA’s weak link during van Gorder’s run). He red-shirts a first round draft pick (Moreno)that by his own admission was a mistake. Who knows why he had Fabris running the special teams. We are lucky that when Richt was hired UT’s run was ending and UF was a mess otherwise we would still be harkening back to the HW days for our glory.

Bobo's a Baby --he needs to Grow Up

December 10th, 2009
1:36 pm

Until Bobo shows some guts and wins 2 or 3 close games, shows some real clock management down the stretch, like the LSU or Kentucky game, welcomes responsibility instead of runnning from it, he’ll be an immature coach. Bobo needs to mature and grow up. 2009 was a disaster for him. He din’t do it one single time–we’d be 10-3 if Bobo wouldn’t have choked in the LSU and Kentucky game, if he’d managed the clock, and wasn’t afriad of some responsibility.

Until he does this, 2 or 3 times in a season, Bobo’s a baby who needs some maturing.

Well, I recall plenty of messages/articles about player leaders challening and organizing one another in the weight room and asking for accountability on the field instead of coaches. It sounds like Rex’s message may be out of context. In other words, it isn’t that Richt isn’t in control overall, but maybe he has been too nice to the players or experimented with an approach where upperclassmen help regulate the team. It’s nice half of the Dawgs haven’t been arrested this year, so not all is bad, but certainly the new defensive coordinator needs to not only fix our defensive schemes but reinvigorate the entire team philosophy and winning edge. This needs to be the year of the boot where coaches take the reins and remold the team – a team full of talent and opportunity.

Why is that when we ear black helmets and black pants it’s the players running the asylum and its all terrible etc.? Why doesn’t this seem to be a problem for teams that change their unis every week i.e. Oregon. Also, the teams that wore the Nike unis were 9-2. Oklahoma got destroyed by TT, and Florida wore theirs one week to many and got killed by Bama.
