Rex Robinson: Players in control in Athens?

Was Mark Richt's choice of uniforms against Florida a symptom of a bigger problem? (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Was Mark Richt's choice of uniforms against Florida a symptom of a bigger problem? (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Rex Robinson isn’t sure a new defensive coordinator will cure what ails Mark Richt’s program.

He blogs that “There have been ever increasing signs that the inmates were running the asylum at UGA. For three years the intermittent collapses on offense, defense or as a team left many Dawg fans scratching their heads. … Now it comes out that the strife on this team has reached new levels. I’m not going to go into specifics on here, but suffice it to say, it’s much worse than we imagined.”

While he doesn’t provide any specifics, Robinson cites Richt’s decision to go with the black helmets and pants against Florida as a case of him catering to the players to try and get them to perform. “It’s not the actual helmets and pants, or even black jerseys,” Robinson says. “It’s what they represent. The players are in control.”

He goes on to bring up again recurring questions about the effectiveness of Georgia’s strength and conditioning program and concludes: “Only time will tell if the changes being made right now are nothing more than a band-aid on the problem or if only a hand-grenade will do the trick.”

Wow. Rex certainly isn’t the only one to complain about the general lack of discipline on the field shown by the Dogs, as evidenced by the chronic problem with penalties and turnovers. But because of his status as a former player his disenchantment with the general direction of Richt’s program is noteworthy.

What do you think? Has the kicking legend put his finger on the true problem with the Dogs, or is he just another grumpy ole guy out of touch with the way the game is played nowadays?

Specifics

December 10th, 2009

Who needs specifics? 30+ players have been arrested in 3 years. There’s a problem when a team that talented goes 7-5. Robinson shouldn’t have to go into specifics. Isn’t it obvious?

Rex is obviously frustrated as we all are, but this type of publicity is not we need at Georgia. Rex needs to get over it and support the Dawgs. If he doesn’t like what is going on then fine but to make these types of vague speculations and not give “specifics” is lame to me.
As far as the uniform situation, I had no problem with it. I thought they were kinda of cool looking myself, but as others have stated, the uniforms are not the problem. I hope CMR can get the ship going in the right direction, I believe he will.

The stupidity on here is unreal.

We couldn’t run the ball early in the year. That’s a fact. It’s not that we DIDN’T…we COULDN’T. The holes were not there and we hadn’t found a RB that could hit the hole and break some tackles.

For some reason, the O-line finally started opening those holes and/or the RBs started hitting the holes consistently. When we CAN run, we do. When we CAN’T run the ball, we pass.

Does anyone know who led the SEC in scoring this year in conference clashes?

CMR has earned the right for us to be quiet and let him take steps to correct things. He is in the middle of doing this, and now is not the time to be throwing more stones. Not that the criticism hasn’t been justified, but we’ve made our point, and now he is doing what leaders do – lead. Give the man a chance!

Rex has no idea what he’s talking about, that’s why he can’t go into specifics. Rex is not in the locker room or at practices, nor is he a part of team meetings. I really wish these “fans” who are front runners and stuck in the 80’s would get out of the way. Watch how fast they come running back at the first sign of success.

Rex and Bill are birds of a feather. Becuase they are obsolete, their opinions are blind and worthless. Now go get a hair cut and a shave and give Ray Goof his glasses back.

Bill should’ve stuck to writing jibberish about rock music. But he couldn’t evolve with that either.

Rex Robinson is a pathetic little man trying to make something of his pathetic little life after football. Anybody can have a blog and say anything they want. It doesn’t make it true. And you dog “fans” who are consistently ripping on Richt: Take his record and compare it to any of Georgia’s previous coaches. He’s done better than ANY of them. He revived a dormant program and made it an SEC contender.

Anybody can have a down year. It happens. Shut up and get over it.

I will say this and Rex has a point: remember how much discipline Richt instilled when he first got here: everyone had to dress nice, no facial hair, hair kept short, etc. — that seems to have gone away in the last few years.

All of this stuff is true. Coach Bowdon was quoted during the hire process for CMR that he wondered “if Mark Richt was tough enough” to be head man. That was something that stuck with me then and re surfaces now.

Facts are facts; If Mark wants to coach here for say 4-5 more years, he must win next year like 8-3 or 9-3 in 12 games. The money men will expect to see a break through win vs either Florida or certainly UT and no more freaky losses to the jackets.

A mid level bowl like Outback, would be a step in the right direction in 2010, then with a break through year in 2011 for the SEC title. Anything short of this simple TWO YEAR game plan would be cause to look for another Head Coach. This reality ALSO COMPOUNDS UGA’s search for new coaches. LOcal coaches KNOW that CMR is at best beleagured.

Such is the way life is when you are banking nearly $3,000,000.00 in base salry per. Such is life.

What CEO would be allowed to hang around for sub standard year ( s?? ) Not one.

Uniforms are not the Cause of Success

December 10th, 2009
12:20 pm

Thinking a uniform change will result in 4 quarters of increased effort is ludricous. A uniform has nothing to do with the WILL of a player. In a football game, the team with the strongest WILL, usually wins. A player’s will is INSIDE of him, not on his uniform. You look for ways to INCREASE the WILL of your team, and DECREASE the will of your opponent.

A pyschologically sound 4 full quarter strategy, and a well executed plan, is the ONLY way to do that. Gimmicks arn’t 4 quarter solutions. A uniform change focuses on getting out to a fast 1st Qrtr. Finish the drill focuses on having a good 4th qrtrt. Georgia needs a strategy that works ALL 4 Quarters like running the ball down the opponents throat, like Herschel did in Dooley’s Natl Champ run.

Hey Gravy Train- pointing out problems in the program doesn’t make someone a fair weather fan. You can be a diehard fan and a Mark Richt supporter and still see flaws. EVERY coach, no matter who or how successful they are, have flaws. To be great, they have to hire good assistants who are strong in those areas. I think Richt needs to go to Parris Island to make his next hire.

exNFL,

Robinson was one of the most respected and standup guys in school when I was there. In a balance between his claim of inside knowledge versus the known decisions made by Richt (Martinez / Bobo) and the results, I believe the balance tips in favor of Robinson.

If Robinson is right then he should be given credit for having the guts to print it.

I think you guys missed the point of having the black jerseys and black helmets. They were used to pump up the fans and players as a form of excitement. Although they didn’t work out as well as planned, it was just a method to excite people. I know as a UGA student and recent UGA grad, the helmets and outfits really pumped me up. It has nothinig to do with the players taking over. But I also do agree that players need to be more disciplined on and off the field, but this is something that many teams have issues.

Maybe on our next set of pants we can get some pockets put on them where the players can put their hands in their pockets and and just watch the game and not get too excited…..

How can anyone question the content of this article? Just examine the behavior on and off the field. Beginning with the gangsta dance with UF, it is clear that Georgia players are out of control. Arrests, penalties, stupid uniform changes–is this a football team or a gang? Moped arrests may seem minor, but the fact that Richt’s players think that they don’t need drivers’ licenses is another symptom of the gang mentality that has dominated UGA in recent years. Richt brought a 1990’s FSU atmosphere to Georgia. There needs to be a housecleaning starting with Adams and including Richt. The fact that UT is worse is no defense for what is going on at Georgia.

ENOUGH ALREADY

December 10th, 2009

Can we please never mention the stupid uniform thing again? Tons of teams from all over the country change their uniforms all the time. I think we all have seen Oregon play but Florida wore three “alternate” uniforms in the final three weeks of the season and no one said a thing. Are Georgia fans the only ones in the country hung up on something so petty? ENOUGH ALREADY. Uniforms have nothing to do with discipline, playing well or some sort of sign about “who is running the asylum.” Rex Robinson is a kicker! Enough said. Yes Georgia has some problems, most of which stem from being in a transition phase from Stafford and Moreno to the new breed of dawg. Next year begins phase 3 of the CMR years. Lets see what we do with a new QB, our sick bunch of young receivers and tight ends and some of the young pups on D like Branden Smith and Boykin, etc. Stop talking about uniforms!!!!

This guy is really reaching with uniforms and helmets. When I last checked, uniforms and helmets don’t make tackles, they don’t turn the ball over, the don’t throw interceptions. I thought this was something done by the Players. Hell Oregon has a different uniform on every week, the last time I checked, they are playing in the Rose Bowl against Ohio State. CMR will be fine once he gets his new defensive coordinator. I also blame Coach Bobo for two maybe three loses this year, his offense put our Defense in some really bad situations.Let’s just hope we get it all fixed and we take our place amongst the SEC best next year. The program have suffered through the same issues. Why have we lost so many offensive lineman to injury for the past five years. Why cant we cleanup the penalties, turnover problems and missed assignments on defense. Why do we seem to perform worse in the second half and why cant we make the right adjustments. These have been issues when they have won, they are glaring now. This all comes back to strength and conditioning, discipline and coaching. Coach Richt has indicated these things need to be addressed but he said the same thing a couple of years ago. These same things used to be a point of pride @ UGA. You simply cannot win with these problems no matter how much talent you have. They were not issues when Rex played for the Dawgs.

Richt’s own pyschology needs to be re-considered. Richt’s a Christian. David, in the Bible, was a man’s man. He’d chop a guy’s head and carry it through the town. David understood psychology. David was a warrior on the field of battle that knew how to terrify his opponents.

Richt needs a little bit of that “Wild at Heart”–John Elderidge, type of mentality.

Our ex-kicker didn’t get “liquored up” did he? The old ” I won’t go into specifics” line is just great. No Rex if you are going to make accusations back them up with something. I really didn’t see a lot of complaining from people when Richt was winning 2 SEC cahmpionships. Did he make the wroing hire on the DC when that time came? Obviously but he had given it time to get corrected by the coach. When that didn;t happen he canned him. Same with strength and conditioning coach. Richt is working to get this thing corrected and he will.

Rex spit out the specifics. Give us the names etc if you are going to make blanket statements like that. Otherwise man up and say that you don’t like Richt and tell us why. Because to do otherwise you are only hurting the UGA football program. A little thing called recruiting going on right now. First of all, how does Rex Robinson know all this information, or is this just an opinion. I just love all the bandwagon fans that hide behind blogs and all this modern technology we all love so much. The coaches have every right to change the dang uniforms any time they want to. For many years Georgia wore white pants until Coach Dooley went back to the famous “Silver Britches”, which I wonder how many Georgia fans know the true origins of this any way! I personally would love to see them return to the Red pants for road games. I don’t care what they wear from game to game as long as the result on the field is hard fought and we don’t look uncoached!! Just because a few fans don’t like black helmets or pants is no sign that things are out of control. The one thing that is out of control is fan expectations. It is a game! You win some and lose some, that is the nature of sports. If we play hard I can live with losing to a better team, if we played hard and well and just got beaten by a better team! That actually happens people. Reguardless of what some of you think, UGA is not always vastly superior to the opponent! The 85 scholarship limit truly has brought a lot of parity to college football. Uniforms matter not people, it is truly what is putting them on!
