Bulldog Bites: Washaun for Heisman?

Washaun Ealey's numbers are getting some UGA fans excited about the future. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Washaun Ealey's numbers are getting some UGA fans excited about the future. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

An interesting comparison between Knowshon Moreno’s numbers and those of freshman Washaun Ealey at Bulldawg Illustrated makes the case that Georgia fans could be in for some exciting results in the running game.

Ealey didn’t play an entire season, but if you take his numbers and extrapolate them to a full season’s worth, they compare quite favorably with what Moreno did. In fact, his yards-per-carry average of 5.8 is better than Moreno’s 5.4 in 2007 and 5.6 in 2008.

The blog also notes that “only two SEC running backs with a minimum of 100 carries, Dexter McCluster of Ole Miss and Mark Ingram of Alabama, averaged more rushing yards per carry in 2009 than Washaun’s 5.8 YPC. Mark Ingram is considered to be the leading Heisman contender, and here is his 2009 line: 249 carries, 1542 yards, 6.2 yards per carry, 15 [touchdowns]. Washaun’s extrapolated numbers would be in Ingram’s neighborhood. Is it too early to begin the Washaun Ealey for Heisman chatter?”

MAKING THE CASE FOR ERK

Erk Russell has been nominated for the College Football Hall of Fame by DawgSports blogger T. Kyle King.

A lot of UGA and Georgia Southern fans have wondered why Russell, whose Eagles won three national chamionships, isn’t in the hall of fame, but the fly in the ointment is that Erk’s eight-season tenure at Georgia Southern didn’t give him the required 10 years as a head coach. However, DawgSports’ King makes a case for counting Russell’s three years as the coach of Auburn’s freshman team.

King has worked hard in preparing Erk’s nomination; let’s hope it pays off.

ORANGE PRIDE INVESTIGATION

MrSEC.com has a roundup of reports about the NCAA’s investigation of Tennessee’s football program, growing out of some of the Orange Pride hostesses making an apparently illegal off-campus recruiting trip.

His summary: “Tennessee will say that their coaches had no knowledge of the hostesses’ trip. If there were only two girls involved, that’s a lot more believable. The hostesses will probably be booted from the Orange Pride program. The NCAA will probably hand down another secondary violation. UT will then need to hope that this secondary violation doesn’t break the proverbial camel’s back … and that the NCAA doesn’t uncover anything else in their talks.”

WELL SAID, MR. CONGRESSMAN

When a U.S. House subcommittee approved legislation Wednesday aimed at forcing major college football to switch to a playoff system to determine its national champion, the measure passed by voice vote with one audible “no” coming from Rep. John Barrow (D-Ga.), an Athens native who is no fan of the BCS but who seems to have a firmer grip than some of his colleagues about why he’s in Washington. “With all due respect,” Barrow said before the vote, “I really think we have more important things to spend our time on.”

I see the stats for Ealy and thinnk he’s a fine runner. But I don’t quite feel like we have a better RB on our hands than Moreno was. We’ll see next year.

Erk should be in the Hall of Fame. They should consider his career as a whole. This Eagle/Dawg alum hopes he makes it.

I agree with John Barrow. Nix the BCS, get us college football fans what we want (majority) in a playoff system, and let congress deal with bigger things please.

I’m hoping Erk gets in. Always have been a big fan of his and ironically tutored the coach that dawg fans can’t stand now. Just too, too early to make a call on Ealey, but he seems to be the most talented back in the dawg stable. I’d make King earn that spot next year as starter and not just give it to him over Washaun. As much as I would like to see a playoff, Congress getting involved just comes across as childish to me.

Yeah, Ealey’s going to win the Heisman, UGA’s going to win a national championship, Van Gorder will come back to be DC, and the BCS will acknowledge that UGA has the best program forever and make it the permanent home of the NC trophy.

I’ll take the wait and see attitude on both Ealey and King – If King can go a full season without injuries that take him off the field, he’s no slouch. If they are both healthy, neither one may get the carries needed to be considered for postseason national awards.

Erk should be in!

Congress is just full of egomaniacs and powertrippers and has become a joke; sticking their noses into sports only proves it further. We need to just start over with all new ones that don’t know how to get earmarks yet, and when they figure it out, replace them again.

On the coaching front, we have heard about Smart, etc., but I’d like to hear about anyone else in the mix since that is 50/50 at the very best. I’ve heard a little about a guy named Manny Diaz out of Middle Tenn. I think? Short resume in a small conference, but impressive so far. Anyone else heard anything?

Go Dawgs!

UGA owns the trade school boys, 8-1 in the last 9 years, that’s called dominance!! The nerds mighty defense under CPJ, (ACC coach of the year for the last two years), has given up 72 points to the DAWGS. His mighty team would be an “also ran” in the SEC if he had to play 8 SEC games every year. Glad it still hurts 30-24 DAWGS on top of the dirt daubers. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!

I like Ealey a lot.. But let’s not get too carried away & pumping him up for the HYPEman… I’m much rather have the Bama resume’… You know the one I am referring to: No HYPEman’s only Championships…

(Though I believe Ingram is deserving & he’s a blue colar dude, not a cry baby upon losing games… Tebow will be a wreck at the next level… Good teams can lose 6 – 7 games & still be in the Super Bowl playoffs.. By the end of a season, TT will be dehydrated from busting the dam with tears!! If he doesn’t ‘dry up’ in the NFL, he’ll be someone’s biatch!!)

Coincidental that after Kiffin said Geoargia was important to UT recruiting and that he would never lose to UGA while he was there, and then fact he did win this years game, coupled with the notion of UT playing in the Chic fellatio bowl New Years eve and UT garnering a couple of notable committments fthe stae already……makes one wonder if some local sportswriter (Tucker, Schultz,King) or perhaps even someone closer to the UGA program happened to mention anything to the NCAA reagrding the Orange Pride girls? ANd by the way what exactly is a “Georgia Girl”?

Washaun can compete for it in the next couple of years. I love how everyone has written the dawgs off. He was a heck of a back in high school and is a coaches dream player.
