Bulldog Bites: Washaun for Heisman?

Washaun Ealey's numbers are getting some UGA fans excited about the future. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Washaun Ealey's numbers are getting some UGA fans excited about the future. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

An interesting comparison between Knowshon Moreno’s numbers and those of freshman Washaun Ealey at Bulldawg Illustrated makes the case that Georgia fans could be in for some exciting results in the running game.

Ealey didn’t play an entire season, but if you take his numbers and extrapolate them to a full season’s worth, they compare quite favorably with what Moreno did. In fact, his yards-per-carry average of 5.8 is better than Moreno’s 5.4 in 2007 and 5.6 in 2008.

The blog also notes that “only two SEC running backs with a minimum of 100 carries, Dexter McCluster of Ole Miss and Mark Ingram of Alabama, averaged more rushing yards per carry in 2009 than Washaun’s 5.8 YPC. Mark Ingram is considered to be the leading Heisman contender, and here is his 2009 line: 249 carries, 1542 yards, 6.2 yards per carry, 15 [touchdowns]. Washaun’s extrapolated numbers would be in Ingram’s neighborhood. Is it too early to begin the Washaun Ealey for Heisman chatter?”

MAKING THE CASE FOR ERK

Erk Russell has been nominated for the College Football Hall of Fame by DawgSports blogger T. Kyle King.

A lot of UGA and Georgia Southern fans have wondered why Russell, whose Eagles won three national chamionships, isn’t in the hall of fame, but the fly in the ointment is that Erk’s eight-season tenure at Georgia Southern didn’t give him the required 10 years as a head coach. However, DawgSports’ King makes a case for counting Russell’s three years as the coach of Auburn’s freshman team.

King has worked hard in preparing Erk’s nomination; let’s hope it pays off.

ORANGE PRIDE INVESTIGATION

MrSEC.com has a roundup of reports about the NCAA’s investigation of Tennessee’s football program, growing out of some of the Orange Pride hostesses making an apparently illegal off-campus recruiting trip.

His summary: “Tennessee will say that their coaches had no knowledge of the hostesses’ trip. If there were only two girls involved, that’s a lot more believable. The hostesses will probably be booted from the Orange Pride program. The NCAA will probably hand down another secondary violation. UT will then need to hope that this secondary violation doesn’t break the proverbial camel’s back … and that the NCAA doesn’t uncover anything else in their talks.”

WELL SAID, MR. CONGRESSMAN

When a U.S. House subcommittee approved legislation Wednesday aimed at forcing major college football to switch to a playoff system to determine its national champion, the measure passed by voice vote with one audible “no” coming from Rep. John Barrow (D-Ga.), an Athens native who is no fan of the BCS but who seems to have a firmer grip than some of his colleagues about why he’s in Washington. “With all due respect,” Barrow said before the vote, “I really think we have more important things to spend our time on.”

Qb Billy Lothridge should have won the Heisman

I thought that Jonathan Dwyer won the Heisman, Whoops, No he only got 33 vs UGA >the worst defense in school’s history. Runner up to the Heisman, QB Nesbit got 44. HAHAHAHAHA
30-24 and 8-1 and 13-4. Get ready for another 8 year run of UGA vs Tech blowouts.

History is never wrong. History will repeat and the Tech beat downs by UGA will continue and CPJ will be arrested for assualting an old lady in a red sweater at Phipps Plaza. “I only hit her in the face.”

Sorry but history is repeating itself. Georgia will never again compete with Florida, Alabama and if you were in the ACC who says you can compete with Virginia Tech and Miami? Check the polls. Georgia got one vote in the coaches poll. One. Wonder who cast that one?

I’d like to see Ealey get 25 carries x 6.2 yards a carry = 155 yards a game x 13 games = 2000+ yards rushing in the SEC. I’d say if Ealey gets 25 carries a game, you’re looking at 15 to 20 TD’s. If Ealey gets 2000 yards and 15-20 TD’s in the SEC, that’s better than Ingram & Bama, and Georgia will win the SEC & Natl’ Championship & Ealey will get the Heisman. I’d give Ealey the ball 30 times if I were Bobo, but Bobo will probably give King 15 carries, and Ealey 25 carries.

Florida, LSU, Ga Tech, and Auburn all had their chance to stop Ealey. They knew Ealey was coming, but could not stop him. Some of the best defenses in the nation—Ealey ran right through them. Ealey’s the real deal. 4.32 40 yard dash speed. Tremendous quickness to the hole. Strong power. Breaks tackles.

I really like this Smart guy at Bama and think that he may be the next head coach at GA after CMR decides to leave. Smart has strong UGA roots and would make a great head coach one day. I do not see him leaving Bama to take a DC job at GA though.

The way to win in the SEC is have a powerful RB. In 2007, Georgia beat Florida by giving the ball 33 times to Moreno, who got 5.7 ypc, and almost 200 yards. Ealey is outrushing Moreno so far in his Georgia career, as he did also in High School. In that 2007 game, Georgia won the time possession battle, turnover battle, and Moreno rushed for 30 carries and almost 200 yards. That’s the way to win in the SEC. 1 back, 30+ carries, 200 yards.

Washaun is an exciting back and will be our next 1,000+ yard rusher barring injury, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. He’ll need to do a lot more than gash up Georgia Tech to win the Heisman. Making the ACC Champion look like a high school team does not win you a Heisman. If it did, there would not be enough Heismans to go around. Ealey will need to put up those kind of numbers against a legitimate team, like Ingram did to Florida.

Erk definitely deserves to be in the College Football Hall of Fame. Do they not give any credit to coordinators? I don’t know if Mickey Andrews of Fla. State ever was a head coach at any level, but he deserves to be in the HOF one day, too. Maybe Erk can go in in one of the first classes enshrined when the HOF comes to Atlanta. That would be fantastic!

The dawgs (Ealey and Green) need to be worried about winning, not awards. However, regardless of how good Green is or will be, someone has to throw him the ball and we do not have a proven QB. Murray maybe the best thing since sliced bread, but we can’t talk about Green for Heisman just yet. Along the same lines, if the line doesn’t block well, Ealey won’t have a chance. Overall, I’m not sure that Ealey is the best all around back at UGA yet. King is solid in the running game and has a better handle on pass blocking. Before all the nay sayers jump on me, I am not annointing King either. I think we are still in a wait and see mode for King. I’ll give him a break after missing half his Senior season in HS with a broken leg, was RS his first year at UGA, on the bench behind Moreno his second year at UGA. By the end of the year he was running much better than his first few games (midway through the season b/c of the hamstring). The kid showed some toughness coming back after breaking his jaw. Personally, after missing so much time without playing significant time in games, I think it just took him awhile to get his legs under him. With all of that said, I still think Ealey is a great runner. With a little time to work on the pass protection, he may completely take the reigns of the running game away from King. It should prove to be a very competitive spring and fall for these two. Also, they maybe better as a duo than individuals. We have them both for a couple of more years

Won’t be able to pony up the money to get Kirby Smart….Bama moving him from 400K to 600K for job well done…..Willie Martinez was at 285K and Bobo and friends right around the 300K mark…It will take 700K to get Kirby, he is the guy who would excite the players and the fanbase, but don’t look for that to happen…He would be making double what the OC would be making and double what Martinez made…WE HAVE THE MONEY, WHY IS IT THAT WE ARE PAYING 1/3 OF WHAT TEXAS IS PAYING FOR THEIR DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR, AND ONLY 1/2 OF WHAT FLORIDA STATE IS PAYING…IS FOOTBALL AT UGA WORTH ONLY 1/3 OF WHAT IT IS AT TEXAS????….ALTHOUGH OUR REVENUES ARE IN THE TOP 2 OR 3 IN THE COUNTRY, WE ARE DOING A POOR JOB OF PAYING OUR ASSISTANT COACHES…WHEN MAC MCWHORTER IS DONE AT TEXAS AS OLINE COACH AND RETIRES, AND THEY DOUBLE COACH SEARLES SALARY AT TEXAS, WE GONNA LOSE HIM TOO….COACH RICHT’S HANDS ARE TIED IN WHAT HE CAN OFFER A DC…ABOUT 450K WILL BE ABOUT TOPS…THEY JUST PAID YOUNG STOOPS 700K TO LEAVE ARIZONA AND COME TO FLORIDA STATE….THINK THAT PRES. ADAMS LIKES IT THIS WAY IN THAT HE HAS TOLD THE AD TO NEVER LET THE FOOTBALL COACH/AD GET AS POWERFUL AGAIN AS COACH DOOLEY WAS….MEDIOCRE SEASONS WILL KEEP THE FOOTBALL HEAD COACH FROM BECOMING POWERFUL…COACH RICHT WILL DO THE BEST HE CAN WITH THE MONEY HE CAN OFFER, BUT DON’T LOOK FOR MIRACLES…MONEY TALKS, AND THE OTHER STUFF WALKS…AND RIGHT NOW WE ARE WALKING…..BUT WHEN COACH RICHT IS NOT ALLOCATED THE MONEY TO GO “GET THE BEST” AND WE AS FANS HAVE TO SETTLE FOR MEDIOCRITY, THE NEXT MOVE WILL BE TO CLEAN OUT THE AD’S OFFICE AND IF THE RIGHT GOVERNOR IS ELECTED, THE PRESIDENT’S OFFICE TOO….WONDER IF COACH SABAN NEEDED A DC WOULD THEY TIE HIS HANDS AS TO WHAT HE COULD PAY HIM????? The Coach Richt Era ?

Has it been Boom ?

Is it Bust ?

How do you personally put up with the arrests and suspensions during the entire Coach Richt Era ?

Is Brian VanGorder a Great Falcons Defensive Coordinator, or not ?

Is Joe Cox really all we have at QB ?

How is that we have to yank the Redshirt off Washaun Ealey in the third quarter of the 5th game ?

Why was Knowshon Moreno Redshirted ?

Did we really not know how good Knowshon is ?

4 parts to college football.

How would you rate UGA’s Coaching and I’m not talking Defense.

How would you rate UGA’s Offense under Coach Richt and now Mike Bobo ?

How would you rate UGA’s Special Teams Kick-offs, Punt Returns and Kick-Off Returns ?

How would you rate the Recruiting of UGA’s Defensive Players ?

Let’s look at just how good we really are, and have been, shall we ?

In a season when we are in fact the

NCAA Number 78 Passing Offense

NCAA Number 73 Total Offense

NCAA Number 41 in Punt Returns

NCAA Number 76 in Kick-Off Returns

NCAA Number 119 in Turnover Margin

NCAA Number 117 in Penalties

We just FIRED THE ENTIRE DEFENSIVE COACHING STAFF, except for the Recruiting Coordinator.

We do not have and have not had an Offense, and this is nothing new this year.

We are a sorry lot on Special Teams, outside our Kickers.

We are an Undisciplined Group of Players on and off the field with 9 years now of Arrests and Suspensions. You can belittle this and say oh it’s only driving a scooter without a license, etc. but the facts remain our players are ARRESTED and SUSPENDED for what you write off as insignificant.

And, we do the same on the field as we do off the field.

It is a Culture.

3-17 last 20 against Florida. Do you concede that we cannot get out of our own Division of our own Conference ? Do you concede this ?

Do you know how we have faired against what actually were Final AP Poll Top 25 teams in the Coach Richt Era ?

Do you ?

18-20, in case you want the breakdown.

And, another 6 LOSSES to teams NOT RANKED IN THE FINAL AP POLL TOP 25.

We are not an Elite Football Program.

We should be.

We are The University of a State, only 3 others of which actually send more high school football players to the NFL than we do. California, Florida and Texas send more to the NFL than the State of Georgia does; that’s it.

5 others have higher attendance.

3 others have more in the NFL than we.

So, why are we 18-20 against Final AP Poll Top 25 teams in 9 years with another 6 Losses to teams not even ranked in the Final AP Poll Top 25 ?

Because of the Defensive Coaches fired by Coach Richt 3 weeks ago now ?

While we see all These Bulldogs on All These Other Program’s Coaching Staffs, what coach on Coach Richt Coaching Staff has anyone seeking him ? Go ahead, you can say it. Coach Richt, CEO, has NEVER had a good coach on his entire staff, ever coaching any position.

How many coaches on this “coaching staff” of Coach Richt today, have ever coached 1 day in the NFL ?

Answer is -0-.

We cannot evaluate talent, even when handed it.

We cannot teach discipline, to save our souls.

We cannot coach any aspect of the game.

We do not make good decisions.

We are not Elite. We averaged Number 14 in the Final AP Poll the previous dozen years, starting 1997; is that Elite ? Hardly, now we have our 1st Team since 1996 that is NOT RANKED in the Final AP Poll.

Tell me the 1 Big Bowl Game, just 1 mind you, that UGA got to play on the National Stage in 9 years now ?

5-Loss Florida State ? That was a Big Bowl Game for Elite Georgia ?

2005 Sugar after we Lost to Florida and Auburn, beat LSU and coached poorly to lose to West Virginia ?

2006 in the Peach Bowl against Number 19 Virginia Tech ?

2007 when we actually beat Florida & Auburn (Lost to vols) ? Number 19 again, Hawaii, this time. That’s an Elite Team in a Bowl Game we showed our stuff against ? Number 19 Hawaii ?

2008 last year after we Lost to Alabama, Florida and Georgia Tech ? Michigan State is an Elite Team in a Bowl Game we got to show our stuff against ?

Who are you trying to fool ?

This year, we had -0 offense against Oklahoma State and Lost, Lost LSU on Special Teams Kick-Off Return, destroyed by Florida when we yanked our Starting QB, Beat Tech and Lost to the vols. 6-6 Texas A&M is an Elite Team we are going to show our stuff against ?

We need to do a lot more than get rid of 3 defensive coaches.

Right ?

Hi Clueless.

-5 top 10 finishes in 1st 7 years
-60 wins in 6 years, 70 in 7
-4th winningest active coach in NCAA
-8th year in a row started the season ranked in top 20
-Nation’s longest streak of 8 or more wins, 12th year in a row
-Richt is one of 7 coaches in the history of the NCAA to get 80 wins in 8 years
-finished #2 in NCAA in 2007
-Should have been Natl Champs—we’re robbed by ESPN & LSU

Gator homers have no cred. get a clue schoolboy. Every great coach has a down year: Carroll, Stoops, Bryant, Paterno, Bowden, etc. I guess you think all those coaches stink too. Nice—clueless.

I’d think Ealey looks promising for a spot on the all-SEC teams each year until he leaves and that he’ll be an NFL prospect for sure, but UGA hasn’t given a player a full chance to be a Heisman candidate under Richt outside of DJ Shockley who was hurt by injuries most of all.

King or other tailbacks will also get carries, but I do think Ealey has the chance to separate himself as the number 1 next year. King can’t punish people like Ealey, who has speed, vision and power. King is a little faster and started tp play well, but Ealey looks special.

There is a way for Ealey to win the Heisman even rotating in with King. Reggie Bush did it in the 2005 USC offense–White and Bush rotated. Bush won by averaging about 9 ypc and touching the ball on kick offs and punt returns. The 2010 Bulldogs do remind you a bit of the 2005 USC Trojans. We’ve got the #1 and #2 ranked RB’s, the #1 and #2 ranked WR’s, the #1 and #2 ranked TE’s. And the #3 ranked QB. Bobo and Richt have to be licking their chops. The biggest difference is USC had a senior QB and Georgia will be starting a Freshman QB, so it might be 2011 until Georgia wins the Natl Championship a la USC style.

But, Miami’s Kosar and Oklahoma’s Jamelle Holliway both led their teams to Natl Championships as Freshman QB’s, so it can happen in 2010. It’s probably going to be that type of offense in 2010 with a freshman QB.

Washaun “Early” wins the Heisman—–and then you wake up. Get real.

I agree that Erk is a deserving candidate for the HOF Our own coach is evidence of his influence across college football. Unfortunate that Erk doesn’t have a better advocate than the blogger mentioned, whose holier-than-thou screeds are interrupted occasionally by cheap shots at opponents, especially Florida’s coach.

Not that I’m counting, but doesn’t Georgia have as many secondary violations as UT?
