Bulldog Bites: Washaun for Heisman?

Washaun Ealey's numbers are getting some UGA fans excited about the future. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Washaun Ealey's numbers are getting some UGA fans excited about the future. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

An interesting comparison between Knowshon Moreno’s numbers and those of freshman Washaun Ealey at Bulldawg Illustrated makes the case that Georgia fans could be in for some exciting results in the running game.

Ealey didn’t play an entire season, but if you take his numbers and extrapolate them to a full season’s worth, they compare quite favorably with what Moreno did. In fact, his yards-per-carry average of 5.8 is better than Moreno’s 5.4 in 2007 and 5.6 in 2008.

The blog also notes that “only two SEC running backs with a minimum of 100 carries, Dexter McCluster of Ole Miss and Mark Ingram of Alabama, averaged more rushing yards per carry in 2009 than Washaun’s 5.8 YPC. Mark Ingram is considered to be the leading Heisman contender, and here is his 2009 line: 249 carries, 1542 yards, 6.2 yards per carry, 15 [touchdowns]. Washaun’s extrapolated numbers would be in Ingram’s neighborhood. Is it too early to begin the Washaun Ealey for Heisman chatter?”

MAKING THE CASE FOR ERK

Erk Russell has been nominated for the College Football Hall of Fame by DawgSports blogger T. Kyle King.

A lot of UGA and Georgia Southern fans have wondered why Russell, whose Eagles won three national chamionships, isn’t in the hall of fame, but the fly in the ointment is that Erk’s eight-season tenure at Georgia Southern didn’t give him the required 10 years as a head coach. However, DawgSports’ King makes a case for counting Russell’s three years as the coach of Auburn’s freshman team.

King has worked hard in preparing Erk’s nomination; let’s hope it pays off.

ORANGE PRIDE INVESTIGATION

MrSEC.com has a roundup of reports about the NCAA’s investigation of Tennessee’s football program, growing out of some of the Orange Pride hostesses making an apparently illegal off-campus recruiting trip.

His summary: “Tennessee will say that their coaches had no knowledge of the hostesses’ trip. If there were only two girls involved, that’s a lot more believable. The hostesses will probably be booted from the Orange Pride program. The NCAA will probably hand down another secondary violation. UT will then need to hope that this secondary violation doesn’t break the proverbial camel’s back … and that the NCAA doesn’t uncover anything else in their talks.”

WELL SAID, MR. CONGRESSMAN

When a U.S. House subcommittee approved legislation Wednesday aimed at forcing major college football to switch to a playoff system to determine its national champion, the measure passed by voice vote with one audible “no” coming from Rep. John Barrow (D-Ga.), an Athens native who is no fan of the BCS but who seems to have a firmer grip than some of his colleagues about why he’s in Washington. “With all due respect,” Barrow said before the vote, “I really think we have more important things to spend our time on.”

1eyedJack – By the way, I’m plotting a revolution against the NCAA on Barnhart’s blog. Check out the last page. My seismic and infrared sensors have not yet detected any of their agents on my property yet.

Erk should be an automatic.

UT is in a lot more trouble than we are hearing about. They did do something over in SC that got the ole coaches ire up.

Let’s hope Washaun hangs around for a while.

45 the duos that seem to be the most effective or the ones where the kids have contrasting styles.Ealy has that short chopping stride like Knowshon(Moreno may be a tad faster) which allows him the get in and out of the hole quickly while King has more top end speed and soft hands. They seem to be developing a nice rhythm as well.Make no mistake Washaun got his shot and rose to the occasion as a true freshman…I love this kid too!!Give Cox these guys healthy from game 1 and he wouldn’t be sitting on 14 picks

With a true freshman, you never know. Getting him into the 2nd semester is the next step.

Delbert, I hate to go here, but cheerleading? Track and Dean’s List – OK.

He reminds me of John Coffey in the Green Mile just with hair. “Boss, I seen a mouse.” Gentle Giant kind of fella.

Coach Erk Russell is a Hall of Famer in my book. What a great man! All he asked was Do Right.
If Ealey will keep his head on right and stay healthy he will be mentioned in the Heisman race by his junior year.

1eyedJack – Yes, and that was a great movie. But tell me: Have you ever seen anybody with that set of credentials, and that big? Imagine him doing backflips. You just can’t make up stuff like this. He’s got to be a great young man, though.

Oh my goodness. You guys are so delusional its not even funny anymore. Your dog blogger is trying to come up with some kind of logic or reasoning that Washaun Ealey, who has had one big game and probably has 300 yds on the season, is gonna be a Heisman contender. Based on one game against a porous tech defense? What on earth do you guys smoke over in athens? Incredible?

Neutral observor – speaking of porous defense, I’m looking at Sponge Bob Square Pants’ resume for DC. He might interest Tech or Georgia as a clear upgrade.

Delbert, we’re negotiating with Ricky Tidwell’s momma for DC.

She’d wash all her team mates uniforms
Tucked everybody in in the football dorms
Cooked the game meal, said the Lord’s prayer
You’re missing a jockstrap? She’s got a spare
Crawled in the huddle, and called all the plays
The only one tough enough to go both ways
Yeah…a mouth full of mud, scoured up knees
Cussing out the coaches spittin’ on referees

I used to smoke rabbit tobackey when I was a kid so I’m going out on a limb here and will say that the Vols continue to make headlines about recruiting mischief (like Tiger, Kitten loves attention but is getting the wrong kind); Bammy will take a hit from Texas much like what happened a year ago from Utah; the Gators will slide back into the swamp next year and not be heard from for a while; GT will remain steady with PJ at the helm but that just means being competitive with the dawgs; and UGA will win the SEC East next year. Please pass the rabbit tobacky.

Bad time to be looking for a DC. Florida and Florida State are also in the market. UGA is going to have to spend big and I don’t think they like to pay coordinators that much.

Look for A. J. Green to be a first team All-American next year. He and Julius Jones are the two best receivers in CFB– and not Golden Tate or Jordan Shipley. It’s the same old thing: the awards go to players in the Big Ten and Big 12 areas. It’s……..crap.

Bill King… I’m not one to give political lessons to people.

But look at politics (and politicians) like High School elections for class president.
They are popularity contests. The kids with the money and the status get nominated and win the election.

In essence… these aren’t politicians. Just the popular vote of the people.
And when the people write their politicians asking for change… the politicians are doing a disservice to their constituents by ignoring the voice of the people.

90% of college football fans favor a playoff.
WHY WOULD THEY NOT LISTEN TO THEIR CONSITUENTS???
(don’t look at politicians like they are important. They aren’t. Just popular)

Its a shame that us puppies can’t bark about anything else but our win over those yellow jackets. I guess it is what we get for letting lowly Kentucky beat our fuzzy butts. I don’t think we have enough self-esteem to do much else than to claim success by winning one stupid game over GT because we know when we go to Shreveport we will get our fuzzy butts handed to us by those Texas Aggies. We can’t even get any respect from our own head coach. It really sucks to be a puppy this year. I think we might be licking Jacket butt for a while they way things are looking right now. Boy, it really sucks to be a UGA puppy.

we need to stop all this stupid talk.. until we can consistently beat UT and UF we will almost always be 2nd-3rd in the East and with no shot for a SEC championship or NC. I could care less about a heisman, it doesnt mean anything. Didn’t Tebone win it the year they did nothing and lost to Michigan in their bowl game. I want to see UGA start putting wins together on UF and UT like they put on us. 12-18 years in a row..

Bill’s getting a little carried away here. Washaun has had some great games but lets wait a little bit before touting him for the Heisman.
He’s going to be splitting carries with King and who knows how many carries he’ll get, how much publicity, etc.
CJ Spiller was a senior, had great stats coming into this season, had an unbelieveably good season with stand out games on national TV and isn’t even one of the 5 invited to NYC this weekend.

And comparing him to Herschel??? Come on!

The 2 best college players I ever saw were Herschel and Bo (in that order) and Washaun has a long way to go to compare with either of them.

Let’s try and settle down a little with all of this National Championship and Heisman talk. We are 7-5 and going to the Independence Bowl for God’s sake, Ealey has had one good game, we’ll have a new DC next year along with a Freshman QB. We will be doing good if we improve our record next year by one game. Maybe by 2011 we can be a top ten team again–MAYBE. I know one thing, though, it sets up well for us to make a run next year with no Bama or LSU on the schedule, Tennessee and Tech at home, Tebow and Strong gone from Florida, and no other tough OOC games…………….a Freshman QB with no experience is what will hold us back, we just have to hope he improves throughout the year. If we can get to the Florida game with only one loss, we might have a shot. I just don’t see it though.

Bookdawg

If Richt would have just benched Cox after the Tennessee game in favor of one of the two Freshmen, we could be going into next year with an experienced Sophomore QB and a darn good chance at making a run if the defense improved, but Cox stayed in…..and for what? 7-5 and an Independence Bowl birth? What a waste, and it will ruin next year for us.

Well, now that the trophy named after me is awarded basically based upon a slick marketing campaign…..I see 2 ways that Ealey could win:

1. The Teabow way – play great, tear up, wear verses under your eyes, have photogenic parents who tear up in the stands, have Richt give you man-kisses at key moments. END RESULT AFTER WIN – High draft choice, fairly good career, in someplace like Buffalo or Seattle.

2. The Thug way – play great, grow some corn-rows, sideline dance whether ahead or behind, hire a publicist, pull a Montez and abuse some women, basically strong arm your way into the trophy. END RESULT AFTER WIN – High Draft Choice – probably to Oakland or Cincy, mass marketing campaign to play up your thug image including clothes, jewelry, sports drink, liquor, gansta rap, etc. Multiple arrests and suspensions. Eventual bankruptcy and appearance on Oprah special, leading to shaving your corn-rows off and re-iventing yourself as a gospel evangelist or hawking a kitchen appliance.
