Bulldog Bites: Washaun for Heisman?

Washaun Ealey's numbers are getting some UGA fans excited about the future. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Washaun Ealey's numbers are getting some UGA fans excited about the future. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

An interesting comparison between Knowshon Moreno’s numbers and those of freshman Washaun Ealey at Bulldawg Illustrated makes the case that Georgia fans could be in for some exciting results in the running game.

Ealey didn’t play an entire season, but if you take his numbers and extrapolate them to a full season’s worth, they compare quite favorably with what Moreno did. In fact, his yards-per-carry average of 5.8 is better than Moreno’s 5.4 in 2007 and 5.6 in 2008.

The blog also notes that “only two SEC running backs with a minimum of 100 carries, Dexter McCluster of Ole Miss and Mark Ingram of Alabama, averaged more rushing yards per carry in 2009 than Washaun’s 5.8 YPC. Mark Ingram is considered to be the leading Heisman contender, and here is his 2009 line: 249 carries, 1542 yards, 6.2 yards per carry, 15 [touchdowns]. Washaun’s extrapolated numbers would be in Ingram’s neighborhood. Is it too early to begin the Washaun Ealey for Heisman chatter?”

MAKING THE CASE FOR ERK

Erk Russell has been nominated for the College Football Hall of Fame by DawgSports blogger T. Kyle King.

A lot of UGA and Georgia Southern fans have wondered why Russell, whose Eagles won three national chamionships, isn’t in the hall of fame, but the fly in the ointment is that Erk’s eight-season tenure at Georgia Southern didn’t give him the required 10 years as a head coach. However, DawgSports’ King makes a case for counting Russell’s three years as the coach of Auburn’s freshman team.

King has worked hard in preparing Erk’s nomination; let’s hope it pays off.

ORANGE PRIDE INVESTIGATION

MrSEC.com has a roundup of reports about the NCAA’s investigation of Tennessee’s football program, growing out of some of the Orange Pride hostesses making an apparently illegal off-campus recruiting trip.

His summary: “Tennessee will say that their coaches had no knowledge of the hostesses’ trip. If there were only two girls involved, that’s a lot more believable. The hostesses will probably be booted from the Orange Pride program. The NCAA will probably hand down another secondary violation. UT will then need to hope that this secondary violation doesn’t break the proverbial camel’s back … and that the NCAA doesn’t uncover anything else in their talks.”

WELL SAID, MR. CONGRESSMAN

When a U.S. House subcommittee approved legislation Wednesday aimed at forcing major college football to switch to a playoff system to determine its national champion, the measure passed by voice vote with one audible “no” coming from Rep. John Barrow (D-Ga.), an Athens native who is no fan of the BCS but who seems to have a firmer grip than some of his colleagues about why he’s in Washington. “With all due respect,” Barrow said before the vote, “I really think we have more important things to spend our time on.”

SadDawg – If Tech were to rejoin the SEC, they probably would be in the East, maybe swapping with SC or replacing Vandy. On the other hand, if Georgia were to join the ACC, they would probably be in the Coastal, maybe replacing BC.

In the second scenario, Tech and Georgia could meet twice a year on consecutive weekends. That would really be something…

Remember that Ealy is only a Frosh. While being a great RB with a tough running style, Ealy has no break away type of speed. He should have took 3 to the house against Tech on long runs. Let’s give the kid at least next year before we go all Heisman on him. Besides we have AJ as a Heisman contender next year if we get a QB to get him the ball.

How come a kid has a good game… what could be a good start to a productive career and we have ruin by either bringing up Hershell Walker or making him a Heisman candidate? What’s worse let’s hang all of the hopes of NC next year on his shoulders. How about we have some good football players play football well and not worry about all this other nonsense?

We lost 5 games this season, genius!!! How can you lose 5 games and then tout somebody in the off-season for the Heisman??? I couldn’t believe the headline when I saw it on the homepage. And then the actual story was even more homerish and silly than the headline.

You need to spend more time in Athens on gameday and see what a Georgia Girl looks like.

Ealey will be a good back for UGA in 2010, maybe not Heisman material but time will tell,
Just because your vols made it to the Chikin Biscuit Bowl don’t give you a whole lot to write home about. Accccording to all the news outlets and media coverage it may be your last Bowl apperance for a while.

Bill-

I know Bobo hates for us to hype Ealey but High Achievers shoot high–the Beatles set their goal as being “Bigger than Elvis”. Without a vsion, you perish. Watch that 1st Qrtrt against Ga Tech, and tell me about Ealey’s potential. Ealey had a 35 yard EXPLOSION PLAY on his 3rd touch. He got another 30+ EXPLOSION run in the 2nd Qrtrt. He was averaging 12 ypc for most of the 1st half. That’s nuts–DOUBLE HERSCHEL WALKER’S YPC!! Herschel’s career ypc was 5.29, Ealey’s at 5.8 this season. Herschel was voted the top #3 college player in NCAA history–and Ealey’s BEATING HERSCHEL’s YPC!!! Ealey certainly has the potential to average 7+ ypc for a season, but he needs to be in top condition like Jerry Rice (Rice’s “Go Long” book is outstanding)and I think he will get better next year.

2010 might be Ealey’s best chance to get the Heisman, because Georgia will have a Freshman QB, so we’ll have to run the ball 40 times a game. If Ealey gets 30 touches a game like Herschel did, he’ll have a legit shot at getting a Hesiman. He could have a 2500 yard season if he gets 30 touches, averages 6 yards a carry, and plays in the SEC champ game, and then a bowl game–that’s 14 games x 180 yards = 2500 yards. That will win him a Heisman. He’ll need 2 TD’s per game and 12 or 13 wins.

Florida, LSU, Auburn, and Ga Tech knew he was coming, but could not stop him. It should be interesting to watch.

To see just how much better Ealey has been than King, you have to dig into the stats a little deeper. The rotation thing makes no sense to me.

Ealey- 4th quarter 5.0 ypc
King- 4th quarter 4.94 ypc

Ealey- 3rd down- 5.46 ypc (Samuel averaged about 1 ypc on 3rd down)
King- 3rd down- 2.11 ypc

Ealey red zone- 4.57 ypc
King- red zone- 3.64 ypc

Ealey- when winning by 15+- 16.24 ypc
King- when winning by 15+- 6 ypc

Ealey- Losing by 15 points or more- 4.67 ypc
King- no stats yet

Ealey- 3rd down with 1-3 yards to go- 7 ypc (better than Tebow)
King- 3rd down with 1-3 yards to go- 1.5 ypc

Dooley didn’t rotate Herschel, and I doubt Bobo will keep rotating Ealey.

Richt has a 40 win and 3 loss record when we get a 100 yard rusher.

When teams can’t stop a guy, it breaks their will to win.

Ealey is a better rb than Moreno and yes he can win the heisman next season. If he get 20 to 25 carries a game, he will win the heisman next season.

godawgs – Interesting analysis. I don’t entirely agree with the last statement, though. The character and mental toughness of the team plays a part. Ga. Tech couldn’t stop Ealey, King or Spiller, and they never lost their will to win. Last year Georgia couldn’t stop Dwyer and Jones; do you think Georgia lost their will to win? I don’t think so.

I have seen cases where teams did appear to lose their will to win, so in general it is a good strategy to employ.

Someone said he doesn’t have speed. He is fast enough. He is faster than Knowshon.

“I’m also not sure exactly how fast Ealey is. I don’t think he’s a sub 4.4 guy, and I’m not even sure he runs the 4.45 that Rivals says he does. But really I don’t care. ECI Head Coach Milan Turner said it best when he told the AJC that his star tailback is “as fast as the guy chasing him.” That about sums it up.”

As for rotating King and Ealy ..I like that idea myself.. for the folks using Moreno as a standard …. IMO Knowshon was a better back in 07 than in 08 because T.Brown got a lot of carries and Moreno was able to stay fresh down the stretch.King suffered a broken jaw and a slight concussion against LSU and still finished the game playing hard….that earned the kid a whole lot of respect from me.He has paid his dues in the program and is just starting to realize his potential as an all around back.A two back rotation can be very successful in the SEC.We’ve done it,so has ARK and AUB recently…I don’t see the problem.

Bobo didn’t rotate Joe Cox but he did rotate Ealey? Makes no sense. Georgia in 2009 is 2-0 when we get a 100 yard rusher, and 5-5 when we don’t. When we get a 100 yard rusher, we dominate mentally and pysch out the other team like Bama and Ingram does. Having 1 guy run for 200 is psychologically MUCH MORE INTIMDATING AND WILL BREAKING than having 20 guys run for 10 yards. Herschel proved that with his win/loss record when he got 100 yards in a game. Herschel got about 150 a game on 30 touches.

Richt is 40 wins, only 3 losses when he gets a 100 yard rusher. Against Ga Tech, Ealey got 183 yards on 20 touches– 9.1 ycp.

Herschel Walker’s Georgia’s record’s are about to fall:
TD Record- 44 (Ealey needs 2 a game for 22 games)
Career YPC average- 5.29 ypc
Best Rushing Game–285 yards (could have broken this one against Tenn Tech this season–Ealey got 12.7 ypc in that game but Bobo benched him as a reward for his effort)
