Lame bowl lineup: Did BCS fear the Frogs?

bcsWhen it comes to his year’s bowl lineup, it might not have been the year of the Dogs, but it’s certainly a dog year once you get past the BCS title match between Alabama and Texas.

I was looking down the list of this year’s bowl matchups to see which ones I might want to circle on the calendar as must-sees. It’s definitely an underwhelming lineup.

Forget the early minor bowls, which boast the likes of Fresno State vs. Wyoming, and Central Florida against Rutgers. OK, BYU against Oregon State in the Las Vegas Bowl might occupy the attention for a quarter or two. Ditto USC and Boston College in the Emerald.

But the Music City puts its perennial SEC team, Kentucky, against Clemson, who got jobbed by the Gator Bowl. Unless Clemson goes into a post-ACC championship funk, that should be a blowout.

Miami and Wisconsin in the Champs Sports Bowl doesn’t excite me much as a viewer. Neither does Arizona-Nebraska in the Holiday.

Actually, one of the more interesting bowls this year should be the venerable but oft-overlooked Sun, which pits Stanford, with Heisman candidate Toby Gerhart, against a down but still dangerous Oklahoma team.

Missouri and Navy in the Texas Bowl?  Bleh. Ditto two 6-6 teams, Iowa State and Minnesota, in the Insight Bowl.

The Chick-fil-A opted to go with Virginia Tech instead of Clemson in its ACC-SEC pairing and decided Tennessee would be better for business than Georgia. I’ll probably check it out, but I’m thinking Hokies all the way.

Then we come to the maverick bowl that initiated the chain of events that pushed the Dogs all the way down to Shreveport: the Outback. They let themselves get talked into taking an inconsistent Auburn team by the Tigers’ campaigning athletics director and matched them with … Northwestern. Yawn-inducing. Really, just about any of the 7-5 SEC teams would be favored in that game.

LSU and Penn State in the Capitol One might hold my interest for a while, but does anyone except Bobby Bowden loylists care about FSU and West Virginia in the Gator? The Rose is your usual boring Big 10-PAC 10 pairing, this time Ohio State and Oregon. And even if the Gators cry all the way to New Orleans and take the field as dehydrated as their coach, I can’t see them having much trouble with Cincinnati. Okie State and Ole Miss in the Cotton? The Cowboys don’t have Dez Bryant any more, so the Rebels shouldn’t have too much trouble there. Tech and Iowa? Yeah, that’ll draw blockbuster ratings for the Orange.

Putting TCU up against Boise State in the Fiesta is pretty much a waste. It would have been fun to see the Horned Frogs take on the Gators in the Sugar. Or even the Jackets in the Orange. But leave it to the BCS to avoid anything really interesting once you get past the national championship game. Maybe they feared the Frogs would show up a BCS conference team and give the Mountain West more ammo in its battle to get a guaranteed spot in the proceedings.

Actually, compared with a lot of these matchups, Georgia and Texas A&M looks pretty entertaining.

GT, sorry to have made you tee-tee your little panties. There is a ton of logic to my statement but you cannot understand or take it. UGA is the state champion AND the a-she-she champion. UGA beat GT. Get it????? The nerds will go down to Iowa because they cannot win bowl games. Look it up, Tesla!! Hey, whay happened last year? Hmmmm…..38 to…..what?

Hey tech teacher,

You techers seem to forget that UGA’s Rontavious Wooten was hit in his hands in FULL STRIDE in the mid second qtr by QB Jumpin Joe Cox. Had that ball been caught …………game over much much earlier. It was over after we scored first time. Over. UGA has led 7 out of the last 9 qtrs vs tech. 1-8 Tech is too.

All this “we dropped the ball and UGA could not stop us” is creative writing. Fiction.

Enjoy your first major bowl since I was in high school in late 60s. 43 years????? Really ???

I actually recall your last Orange Bowl trip and an ugly loss to Florida. Their running back ran wild over tech and Bobby Dodd went out like a loser. He lost to UGA, then to Florida in that bowl game. He was so happy that he RAN from the FAR MORE rigorous SEC at first and then it bit him hard after those two games in a row. HAHAHAHAHAHA

In retirement, he always said that leaving the SEC was a massive miscalculation on his part. The ACC memebrship has finally paid dividends. Took Tech 43 years to get to a major bowl. Wow!!!

UGA has been to major bowls 43 times ……..no, only about 16-20 in the same period. HAHAHAHAHA

Goooooooooooooo Dogs.

I agree with you, Bill. It would be interesting to see the undefeated non BCS teams against the so-called big boys. They’ve looked pretyy danged good lately. UTah/ALA, Boise/OK. I think Boise or TCU agaainst Tebows boys would have been a good match. As an addendum, I am so thankful Tebow is graduating and pray that he gets drafted by Seattle so I won’t have to see his sanctimonious butt again. He’s a good footbal player but p l e a s e, enough already

It is so ironic and sad to hear UGA fans diss on Georgia Tech and act like they are such a powerhouse. Like CPJ said “What has UGA done since 1980?” I mean really y’all. I am not saying that Tech is a powerhouse, but they do have a better record than UGA this year. UGA is no Alabama or Texas or any other top tier team and they way that things are going it will be a long time before they are.

TCU is lucky to be playing Boise, now they can finish the season undefeated. Florida beats both of those teams after the dissapointment on Saturday. They will be ready for Cincinatti and the Gators actually have athletes that can cover Mardy Gilyard.

If Richt had any common sense, he’d play Cox one drive in the 1st quarter, then hand it over to the youngins. But he probably won’t because he has “loyalty” to Cox, and wants to make sure he gives the seniors their well-deserved “bowl experience”. LOL!

How stupid are people? That would waste a redshirt for one game dbag. Murray was hurt till about the 6th game of the season. way to do your research

Gailey, you might be right if we don’t get rid of Richt. That boy take s way too long to make any adjustments. Sometimes, I don’t thnk he even knows that he doesn’t know, as much as it pains me to say it. I remember his first year when he blew time management at the end of the game in the tech or auburn game. Best I remember, he called a runnimg play with just a few seconds left. that really made me wonder. how could he be an OC at FSU for so many years and not know time managment?

My UGA interest will have me watching the game in Shreveport, and I hope the dawgs don’t lose either. About the UGA-Tech yearly battle, I think both coaches would really rather not play that game. In years to come it may affect both UGA and Tech playing in the their conference championship. No team wants to lose have the blogs printing stuff for a year, but if it cost either team a trip to a BCS bowl, maybe it can get it played earlier (like the first game of the season), alternative years or never again.

Hey Bark Patrol….Don’t you read the AJC? People get held up and robbed on the Tech campus every week….COME ON MAN! Did I hurt your feelings. Maybe you need to go have a good cry with Timmy Tebow over your loss to a Georgia team that is middle of the pack in the SEC but because they beat Tech is now considered the ACC champs by everyone in their own league. Have fun in your big bowl against Northwestern…you know who they are don’t you ? that powerhouse team from Chi-town thats going to embarrass Tech while no one…and I mean no one, is watching your game. I’ll bet right now that your game is the lowest rated bowl game on TV this year. One thing we all do know is …..in the state of Georgia….. the DAWGS RUN THIS STATE….30-24…ALWAYS HAVE …ALWAYS WILL….. We all should hope and pray for as many undefeated teams as possible AFTER all of the bowls have been played……….I wish all of the undefeated teams still had a chance to be undefeated (except for the NC matchup I supose)………………we will be one step closer to an 8 team playoff if the NCAA could end up with 4 or 5 undefeated teams every year!!

It’s way past time for a playoff. I agree most of these bowls are a waste of time and I won’t bother watching. I like the Pitt/UNC matchup. Pitt has no.3 rusher, while UNC has defense rated around 5th or 6th best. Pitt also has a good defense. UNC seems to show up in big games (they defeated VaTech in Blacksburg, as well as Miami. Both of those teams are rated in top 20. ) But they lost to NCState (as did Pitt) and UVa.

This blog is precisely what’s wrong with the ajc. Soooo parochial, lacking in any awareness of the world outside of Georgia. UGA and Texas A&M is no more or less interesting to the general public than most other bowls. How does this guy get a column??? Sure, all of you Dawg fans will mock the TN hillbillies (pretty original, btw, since GA is home to the site of the movie Deliverance) but look at this guy!!!!

Wow, there are some geniuses on this blog today, and that includes the sorry excuse for a Bulldog fan stuck in the 70’s and 80’s, Mr. Sour Grapes with Sally Jessie glasses, Bill King.

The lower tiered bowls are always junk. The BCS obviously fears the mid-major Davids after what Utah and Boise State have done in the past. The Gator and Peach folks should be ashamed of themselves.

FYI: USC Pete started the freshman because everyone else was hurt and he had no choice. Cox was and is the starter for one basic reason: he knows the offense and the playbook better than anyone else, referred to by CMR as the best chance to win. Talent was not the decisive factor. Word is that Murray had a dinged up arm and Mettenberger is still adjusting to the college game.

You Techsters can spin things however you want, but the fact remains that the best team you’ve had in almost 20 years lost to the worst team CMR has had in Athens. There is no doubt things will improve for UGA while there is little doubt that Turkey Neck has reached his peak.
